 Road diversion map of the areas affected during January and February

From January 7 a 100m diversion will be installed north of Anderson Bridge.

The diversion road is suitable for all vehicles and traffic management will be in place with a reduced speed limit. The diversion will allow the construction crew to cut into the existing state highway to form the new road alignment. This diversion is expected to remain in place until the end of February.

From January 14 all vehicles will be diverted onto Matakohe East Road from south of Anderson Bridge, through Matakohe, past Matakohe School and back onto to SH12.

The 5km diversion will allow the construction crew to form the new intersection into Matakohe and tie in the western end of the new alignment into the existing state highway.

Let’s honour our local heroes

The New Year’s Honours and Queen’s Birthday Honours lists recognise those New Zealanders who contribute to our communities.

They come from all walks of life and the contributions they make are as diverse and eclectic as the recipients.

Common elements, however, are that very few of these people do what they do for the recognition of appearing on one of these lists.

Nevertheless, I believe the lists are important. These people (most of them) deserve to be recognised and the honours lists give us the opportunity to do so. I think we lost a big part of the opportunity when in 2003 the Helen Clarke government dispensed with knights and dames. I admit I was happy to see them restored

by National in 2009.

Of course, not everybody is offered the opportunity of a knighthood, or to become a dame or any of the other honours. Even among those who are — Helen Clarke among them perhaps — some choose not to accept them.

But it remains a guilty pleasure for us to twice a year scan those lists and recognise someone we know or are even related to.

So, it was with slight disquiet that I scanned the 2019 New Year’s Honours list and found no recipient listed as living in Kaipara. Some might of course

be from the district but there doesn’t seem to be any current residents.

Why is that, I wondered.

Surely, we have many, many good people working in (and for) our Kaipara community who deserve these, the nation’s, highest accolades.

I know for a fact we have, I have met many of them.

So, are we reticent in coming forward to support and nominate them?

We shouldn’t be.

I would like to see us get right behind our local heroes.

That is what I intend to do in 2019.

I am going to be constantly on the lookout for people I believe should be submitted for an honour (they are not hard to find) in the hope of giving them and Kaipara the recognition they deserve.

It all began with a simple concept — having replaced the classic wooden windows in their Dargaville home Sharon and Wayne Constable did what many Kiwis have done before and since — they put the un-needed excess joinery up for sale on the internet.

 The I Deal Demo crew have been helping improve Dargaville homes for four years this January

Expecting a bit of pocket change and a quick deal, the pair were surprised to field a huge reaction. And that lit up a light bulb in their heads.

With a wealth of vintage and goldenera colonial homes in the Kaipara, and with a new trend toward migration north, the desire for alteration options was immense. Sourcing quality joinery and windows, doors and ranch sliders began to gobble up time in the Constables’ weekends, and still their list of happy customers grew. Four years ago the pair made the big step of getting their own shop and outdoor yard, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Although in this case, the rest may better be described as architecture. As their stock expanded it became even more apparent that the popularity of ‘do it yourself’ went beyond prime time television! Requests came in for nuts and bolts, catches and stays, vintage

parts in brass and wrought iron — and Sharon and Wayne also saw the need to be open on Saturdays, when many home improvement teams really roll up their sleeves and get into it. They listened — and that feedback from customers led to even more success.

Today, four years on, I Deal Demo is that place ‘just around the corner’ where savvy DIY mates will tell you to check first when you’re contemplating a renovation.

And, filling another niche which Dargaville was lacking, Wayne and Sharon’s store also provides landscaping materials like pavers and garden stones, potted plants and quirky outdoor ornaments and furniture. It’s a testament to the fact that listening to what the people want is just good old fashioned business and also an ongoing, evolving asset to a town which is in love with the art of DIY! 

Bowl jam success

 Nixen Osbourne impressed the crowds with his skills at the 7th Annual Vans Mangawhai Bowl Jam. Skaters gathered from all over New Zealand and Australia, with more than 1,500 spectators throughout the day and more than 40 skateboarders competing. “It is exciting to see the level of skateboarding grow to new levels every year,” said event director Jesse Peters.

 Kaipara District mayor, Dr Jason Smith, pictured with partner Diane Foreman, after he was sworn in. Mr Smith won the by-election with 3021 votes with more than 42 per cent of voters recorded which he said was a credit to Kaipara — this compared to a same-day council voting turnout in Auckland of just 24 per cent. “The Kaipara turnout was significant and indicated civic pride,” said Smith.

Paparoa family sports day Plastic bag free

 The annual Paparoa family sports and games afternoon was held in March at the Paparoa showgrounds where about 80 participants competed in a range of fun activities. The local fire crew was there to cool down participants and Chiara Lydiard, and friends got a welcome shower.

M Bovis confirmed

 Biosecurity New Zealand confirmed a property in Northland tested positive for the bacterial cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis in September. It was the first time the disease had been found in the region, and the farm, as with all other infected properties in New Zealand, was identified through the tracing of animal movements from known infected farms.

Tegel bid squashed

 The proposed Tegel poultry farm application at Arapohue was withdrawn at the end of September after a decision by the Overseas Investment Office to decline the company’s application to purchase the land required. Tegel had requested consent to build a mega chicken farm employing more than 30 people, but objections flowed in from the public who arranged a protest to encourage the withdrawal of the application. Kaipara District and Northland Regional councils were to hold a submission hearing and community impact reports were outstanding from the company.

 The Dargaville community CCTV project made excellent progress throughout the year with monitors and software being installed at the police station, in addition to a transmitting tower, which allows the cameras to communicate with the station computer. The installation of cameras throughout Dargaville commenced, and became operational, resulting in several successful crime reports.

Sportsville opens

 The massive undertaking of establishing a community-based multipurpose sports facility in Dargaville came to fruition for the Kauri Coast Recreational Society board. Members and supporters made up a team to play against celebrities in a fun, informal netball game at the Sportsville Dargaville opening day extravaganza in September. The game played alongside a celebrity tennis match after the formal opening ceremony speeches and presentations.

Gary Murdoch recognised

 Veteran firefighter Gary Murdoch was presented with the Queen’s Service Medal by prime minister Jacinda Ardern for his services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the Dargaville community for 52 years. “You don’t expect it, you don’t ask for it, and you don’t do it for this sort of recognition. When you get the letter, it blows you away,” he says. “I’m so bloody proud and my family is chuffed,” he said.

Pouto farmers win top title

Local shearer in film

 Pouto farmers Dan and Gina Duncan won the prestigious 2018 New Zealand Share Farmers of the Year competition in May, bringing the cup back to Kaipara and Northland for the first time in 22 years. As well as the top New Zealand title they also collected three merit awards; the Primary ITO Interview Award, the Ravensdown Pasture Performance Award and the Westpac Business Performance Award at the Invercargill ceremony.

Green light on community centre

 Baylys Beach Community Centre Charitable Trust chairman, Graeme Ramsey, and other members of the Baylys Beach community were elated to finally receive a positive result in October in their application for the proposed community centre and base for the surf life saving patrol. The trust bought a section funded by an anonymous donation in 2016, and since then there have been a number of challenges around gaining building consent.

 Ruawai local, Hazel Wood, starred in a documentary about five female New Zealand shearers working in a male-dominated industry. Released in early October as a part of the New Zealand International Film Festival and also screening at Dargaville Anzac Theatre — She Shears quickly gained national popularity.

Call it twelve decades and counting. To be precise, 127 years have passed since the settlers of the northern Kaipara harbour gathered to celebrate their hard work and farming prowess for the first time at the inaugural Arapohue Show. Like many of the traditional A&P shows established in the 1880s and 1890s, this annual tradition has continued down the years and is stronger than ever today.

 A huge community effort to save two humpback whales stranded at Ripiro beach in August, had Department of Conservation and Project Jonah staff humbled at the response and support. Staff and volunteers monitored the welfare of the stranded whales, but both were euthanised. Photo credit Ken Cashin

Kauri dieback progress

 Significantly positive results were reported by Plant and Food Research scientists in September, a year on from instigating chemical injections into kauri trees infected by dieback disease in Trounson Kauri Park. The trials showed that kauri injected with the chemical phosphite managed to fight off the disease, and the bleeding lesions on their trunks had healed.

That could be because the city and the country seem closer than ever thanks to modern transport and technology — after all, it’s only a two and a half hour drive from Auckland’s metropolis to the showgrounds on Mititai Road, in the heartland of the Kaipara. It’s likely also because a real traditional show day is so much fun, with everything from highland dancing to great food on offer This year’s show will see families from far and near gather to take in a day of hearty food, live entertainment, rides for the kids, and of course, a full schedule of competitions as rural folks vie for the coveted ribbon of champion across a huge range of skills and pursuits. Despite cattle events being cancelled due to M Bovis precautions, other farm animals will be represented in their finest for judging. The region’s

young farmers and Agri-kids will compete in a variety of challenges displaying rural ingenuity and skill. And to make the day affordable family fun, all the sideshow games will be running on a ‘gold coin donation’ basis this year to help all comers get amongst the action. Another big drawcard of the Arapohue show is the flashing blades of the shearers — part of the official ANZ Northland Shearing competition.

This sport is always hotly contested, providing a glimpse of the stamina and skill required to produce one of New Zealand’s most famous exports.

With all this and more, it’s easy to see why the Northern Wairoa Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s keystone show is 127 years young and why you can expect a big crowd when the action kicks off for 2019 on Saturday, February 19. 

Well, what a great time of the year for getting outdoors! The sun is shining, the fish are biting, the days are longer than the apparent duration of a high school mathematics exam, and exactly the inverse square root in terms of sheer enjoyment.

Those who haven’t experienced sand in their sandwiches, hot chips in a paper cup, the smell of warm sunscreen and the dapple of sunlight through water these past few weeks are encouraged to put down this paper and try it.

It’s top season for towing boats and hitting the road with tents, kayaks, dirt bikes, quads and other toys as well, which brings us neatly to one of the paradoxes of modern motoring.

The sports utility is ubiquitous right now, and every single one is being advertised as the must-have accessory to bring on a family camping trip.

More important than the bung for the air mattress or a working can opener.

But take a look at the boat ramps and campgrounds, and what do you see? Most of the fanciest SUVs are conspicuous by their absence.

What we see instead is the predictably competent crop of modern utes, a selection of what would be considered ‘classic’ offroaders such as Land Cruisers and Patrols, and more than a few station wagons — a body style we’re told is as out of fashion as bright paisley bell bottomed trousers.

Certainly, the era when the luxury and

crossover SUV was prone to getting stuck in a mild puddle are over. Every car maker is jumping in on the trend.

Jaguar make the competent and comfy F-Pace. The marketing for the manly and hairy-chested Alfa Stelvio has to be read to be believed.

Volvo had two lux 4x4s in 2018’s NZ car of the year shortlist. Following in the path of the speedy but questionably styled Porsche Cayenne, you can now buy an off road Lamborghini, Bentley, or even a Rolls Royce.

Here’s the thing though. Your Bentayga is unlikely to back gingerly into the briny to launch a tinny. Your Rolls Cullinan will never be seen towing a 1971 oxford caravan to the beach, but for a fraction of the cost, your Hilux Surf or old Navara or Falcon wagon will in true Kiwi style. So you can keep the ultra high end 4x4s this summer. While they pose on the roasting hot high street, other cars are having more fun. 

Fine forecast ahead for anglers  by Andy Bryenton

With a mixed bag of meteorological luck predominating over the Christmas and New Year period, those with a longer holiday ahead of them may very well be looking to the prospects for some late summer angling. The good news is, summer is set to roll on for quite some time, with only pockets of poor weather on the horizon.

Mild temperatures, medium cloud cover and gentle breezes combine to make for an ideal January, as forecasts predict the mercury in the mid to high twenties. On the water, this translates to summer’s typical rolling swells and many perfect opportunities to dangle a line off the side of the boat for some fishing action. Those who factor in the phases of the moon when planning a fishing trip will note that the last week of January is a poor time for predicted bites, though fishing remains average to optimum right through until the 21st.

As well as a migration of warmer water species, the summer brings with it another migration — anglers from out of the Kaipara region drawn here by the long sunny days and the prospect of some top catches. Who could resist the lure of heading out into the azure waters of Mangawhai’s east coast or casting a line out past the breakers on the mighty Ripiro coast, where even at this time of year the closest fishermen are often seen as mirages in the heat haze?

If you’re one of these visitors, welcome, but please do take the time to talk with our local fishing and boating

‘veterans’ to ensure you have the best possible experience.

As you’ll know, every top spot is different, with new challenges, opportunities and dangers. You’ll find that a stop at the local bait and tackle store will render lots of good advice on how and where to really enjoy your fishing holiday. Boaties especially are advised to take care if they are unfamiliar with the waters where they

are set to sail, and to make sure they have life jackets, radio communications, a distress beacon and first aid supplies just in case.

The best part about fishing in the Kaipara — apart from the ongoing golden weather — is that every day is different, and there’s always something new to try.

And if the trip delivers empty hooks, at least a visit to the takeaways or the fish shop will deliver a happy ending! 

Kaipara District Council at its December 2018 meeting adopted a Class 4 Gambling Venue Policy as part of the three yearly review of the Class 4 Gambling Policy. The Class 4 Gambling Venues Policy regulates non‑casino gambling machines (pokies) in the Kaipara District as required by s101 of the Gambling Act 2003 (GA 2003).

The purpose of this Policy is to state the Council’s position regarding Class 4 gambling and to provide guidance as to the conditions required for relocation of a Class 4 gambling venues in the Kaipara District.
