Plans for new centre

Home base for field days

A planned increase in the number of field staff is prompting the Northland Regional Council to consider forming a Dargavillebased customer service centre.

The Northland Field Days Committee is set to have a place to call home as the final touches are put on a new office building at Awakino Point.

This boost could see the Kaiparabased NRC field staff grow from two to 10, along with several ‘hot desking’ staff, over the next five years.

In mid-2016, NRC staff moved into the Kaipara District Council building but will now need more space for growth.

Kaipara-based councillor Penny Smart, who chairs the regional council’s Property Subcommittee, says a potential solution lies with the purchase of a property at 32 Hokianga Road.

The regional council paid $465,000 for the property from its Property Reinvestment Fund and is considering

redeveloping it into a customer service centre.

“Council sees it as a strategic and longer-term investment in both Dargaville and the wider Kaipara area due to its proximity to both Whangarei and Auckland.”

The design and construction costs will be put before the councillors later in the year. In the meantime, current tenants Big River FM will remain in the building.

Cr Smart says, assuming construction of a new NRC Kaipara service centre goes ahead, work is unlikely to start before 2019. 

“I think it will be really good for the team to have somewhere to base ourselves. It’s good to be on location, so when you’re talking about things you actually can go and look at the site,” says vice president Rachael de Vries.

The committee has been working out of small portable buildings since the field days have been held at the current site.

“We have been talking about having a building where we can meet with sponsors and exhibitors for many years, so it’s rather exciting seeing it coming to fruition.”

The committee is now waiting for the progress inspection and if all goes to plan, the building will be up and running for the field days in March.

“It’s somewhere where people can come and see our administration staff member.

“We can also have past presidents’ pictures on the wall and really know our history.”

Work by Duder Construction Ltd started just before Christmas last year.

Rachael says they are always looking for new volunteers and sponsors. 

Solving technology mysteries SeniorNet Dargaville will start up again after the summer break and organisers are encouraging new people to come along and enrol.

For 17 years SeniorNet has been helping people over 50 to learn about technology in an enjoyable and supportive way.

The Dargaville Aero Club will host a variety of recreational aircraft, ultralight trikes, gyrocopters and drones from as far away as Tauranga this year at their annual open day.

“We have these open days so people get to know what’s going on at the airfield,” said veteran chief flight instructor Murray Foster.

Aircraft will fly in from Parakai, Whangarei and even Tauranga, and it is expected that up to seven gyrocopters will be on display.

The open day also includes a barbecue lunch, which visitors are invited to partake in. After lunch there will be a flying display where each type of aircraft will do a flight demonstration for 15 minutes.

A second world war Catalina seaplane

will also be stopping by from New Plymouth during a tour of the north later in the year. The aircraft will stay at the Dargaville Aerodrome for one day and people are invited to come and view it. The date for this event is to be confirmed.

Dargaville Aerodrome is one of the few places people can learn to fly a microlight with the added bonus of free flight instruction.

Visitors are invited to come along to the Dargaville Aerodrome on Hoanga Road from 10am onwards on Saturday, February 10 and entry is free. 

However, to ensure the safety of construction crews and all other road users, there will be temporary speed restrictions in place from time to time over small sections of the highway so that trucks can cross safely.

“The team will start bridge construction in March and this work will continue until the end of summer 2019.”

The project improvements will include a new intersection for access to Matakohe township and the Kauri Museum, and a walking and cycling trail along the existing road, which will form part of the Dargaville to Mangawhai trail being developed in partnership with Te Uri O Hau and Kaipara District Council.

Meanwhile, Northland local body leaders are disputing the government reportedly being less enthusiastic about a four-lane replacement of SH1 into the region.

Prime Minister Jacinda Adern was quoted as suggesting neglected regional roads would be better candidates for funding, rather than proposals like the proposed Northland-Auckland four-laning.

Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter is to meet with local mayors to discuss which regional roads would be prioritised.

Kaipara’s acting mayor, Peter Wethey, is concerned if the four lanes do not go ahead. “Given the growth in horticulture in the north, the development of a key

A wheelchair-bound Baylys Beach resident has taken it upon himself to pick up rubbish around his street on his daily outings and it’s starting to cost him.

The club travelled to Dargaville to participate in the Northland Age Group Swimming champs held on January 1921 and stayed for a further week for training in the 50m pool.

Dargaville Swimming Club secretary Samantha Simons says watching the other club train is great for the Dargaville swimmers.

“It means the kids get to see really good swimming and training in action.”

Coast Club head coach Steven Kent said: “It’s really good to be able to train on a longer course and outside. We are

training for the upcoming National Age Champs, the New Zealand Open champs and Helena is training for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.”

Helena represented New Zealand at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and will compete in the Commonwealth Games in April.

“It’s a lot nicer to train outdoors and in a longer pool. The pool I normally train in is 25m,” Helena said.

“I’m excited to go to the Commonwealth Games, but there’s a lot of training to do before then.” 

Kelvin McKenzie has been doing this good turn for over a year and says the amount of rubbish he collects is starting to cost him too much to dispose of.

“I’m on the invalid’s benefit, which isn’t much and we have to pay for all the rubbish bags,” he says.

“I pick up the rubbish as a good turn for the community. I see the rubbish guys come around once a week, but there are still lots of little bits lying beside the road and in the gutters.”

Kelvin says the most problematic non-organic waste is broken glass

and alcohol cans. His caregiver Kathy Vodanovich also helps when she accompanies him on his trips around the block.

“He enjoys getting outside regularly and it’s really good for him to get some fresh air,” she says. ”All the residents love him and give him a wave.”

Kelvin says the best possible outcome would be for the Kaipara District Council to supply him with some free rubbish bags. He also has a message for the community.

“Keep New Zealand green.” 

One donation of blood can save the lives of up to three people and locals will have the chance to contribute at the Dargaville Town Hall on Monday, February 12.

Redhill Cemetery volunteers are calling for the community to help them identify all the returned servicemen’s graves in time for Anzac Day.

 Donating blood only takes ten minutes but can save the lives of up to three people

“It is important that everyone takes an opportunity to give back to their community if they can, no matter where they live rural or urban,” says donor recruiter Ben Jorgensen.

“Twenty nine thousand people need blood and blood products every year in New Zealand, and that is all people from rural to urban areas. With cancer being our largest user of blood or blood products, I’m sure we all know someone who this has affected.”

One donation can be separated into several components — red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Each are used to treat different types of patients

such as accident and burns victims, patients undergoing surgery, adults and children suffering leukaemia, and transplant patients.

The actual donation of blood takes about 10 minutes and the entire process takes one hour.

People who have been in accidents and suffered massive blood loss may need multiple transfusions of red blood cells and other blood components.

Ben says they would like to encourage as many people as possible to come along and donate at the Dargaville Town Hall, Monday, February 12 between 1pm to 6pm. 

The Northern Wairoa women’s section of the Returned and Services’ Association will place crosses on the graves of returned servicemen at the Mt Wesley Cemetery in time for the Anzac Day commemorations, and women’s section member Betty Rope wanted to include those buried at Redhill too.

“I thought it would be a nice way to include them without taking anything away from the main commemorations at Mt Wesley,” she said.

She approached Redhill Cemetery volunteer Des Subritzky with the idea, who asked some friends and made it If YOU are reading this Newspaper, so are Thousands of others.

Not all of their graves are marked as returned servicemen. We’d like people to come forward with the names so no one gets left out.

“It was a great idea of Betty’s and these men deserve recognition.”

Keeping heritage alive The Paparoa A&P Show is a place where town and country come together and has been for 142 years.

Many generations have been involved in keeping this historic show a stand-out event on the community calendar.

North Kaipara Agricultural Association president Kate Battensby says the best part about organising the event is seeing people enjoy it on the day.

“It’s great to know that everyone is happy and having a good time. It’s nice to see the kids laughing and doing their thing at the side shows.

“I’ve got a very, very good committee behind me. The indoor committee are absolutely lovely and just keep coming back every year.”

There will be plenty for the young ones, with a variety of side shows as well as exposure to rural activities that many might not have seen before.

However, it’s not just the kids that get to have all the fun. There are plenty of activities for the adults as well, and it is a classic example of kiwiana for international tourists.

Each year there is equestrian showjumping, dressage and harness ring, pedigree cattle and dairy goats, wood chopping, shearing and western team roping displaying a wide range of rural skill and talent.

Paparoa Show boasts an extensive indoor section where classes such as cooking, sewing, knitting, handcrafts, vegetables, flowers, photography, local school handwriting and art work, home brew, cheese and children’s work are competed for.

As it is held in summer, and show day is often hot and sunny, there are always plenty of stalls selling things to eat and drink.

A St John ambulance is always onsite to make sure everyone is safe. There is free parking and all necessary facilities.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 each for the first two children — extra children are free as are all children under five. 

SeniorNet Mangawhai Inc is expanding to Wellsford and will offer classes to help those over 50 gain confidence with technology.

SeniorNet is a community training organisation that helps people to improve their computer skills and use technology in their everyday lives.

“It’s especially important in communities like ours where people have to travel to do things. If they can use the online facilities and build their confidence, they’ll feel more confident using their devices,” says SeniorNet committee member Val Cleaver.

They will offer group help clinics and workshops throughout the year that focus on computer matters of popular interest.

These operate from February to November each year.

“Mobile devices are a big part of what SeniorNet teaches because often people’s families, children and grandchildren are using these. We try to help with things like Facebook. It’s great if our students can use that because it helps them with finding out what’s going on.”

The Mangawhai Bowl Jam skating competition just keeps getting bigger says event director Jesse Peters.

Skaters from all across the country will gather to take part in the seventh annual event and will have the chance to show off what they have been practising throughout the year.

“The whole event is about growing skating in New Zealand and our priority is to provide a platform for them to grow and compete against each other,” says Jesse.

“It’s cool to have all the skaters and skating community from right across the country coming together on Waitangi weekend. It’s just as much about everyone getting together as it is about skateboarding.

“At the same time, the level of skateboarding gets better every year.

Just seeing the progression and waiting to see what everyone’s been practising is really great.”

The competition is divided into four different categories. The event will kick off with the under 16s and for the first time there will be a dedicated women’s division.

The men’s masters 40 plus division follows this and the competition finishes with the open division final.

“The biggest thing is that people can come along, hang out with friends and see some amazing skateboarding,” says Jesse.

The event takes place at the Mangawhai Activity Zone on Saturday, Feb 3 from 10.30am. Entry is free. 

With summer sunshine pushing up the mercury and bouts of almost tropical rain doing the same for humidity, it’s been a scorching summer in the north for the start of 2018. That’s thrown into stark relief the need to upgrade many of the region’s milk chiller systems, many of which are set for a mandatory overhaul come winter.

With new regulations on the way demanding milk is chilled faster, and electricity prices prompting a desire for greater efficiency, it could be time to look at a combination of technologies to tackle this vital task. Some utilise advances in heat exchanger and refrigeration engineering, while others are low-tech solutions, which could render high gains. However, all options are on the table as new regulations coming into effect on June 1, this year. At this point, a temperature of ten degrees Celsius must be reached within four hours of the commencement of milking, dropping to 6 degrees Celsius within six hours of commencement. Stored milk must remain in the zone above freezing but at or below 6 degrees Celsius, not rising above 10 degrees Celsius even during subsequent milkings.

This may be a tall order for smaller or less efficient chiller units. However, new options such as ice banks and cold water storage units can assist by generating frosty temperatures with cheaper night rate power, using the cool water to more effectively chill milk than water at environmental temperatures.

Snap chillers, on the other hand, chill a mixture of water and glycol on demand.

system remains largely the same, however, from those you’d find in the back of your chest freezer. Like the chilling units found in air conditioners and fridges, technology has improved the efficiency of chillers in recent years, so an upgrade now may be best in the long run, rather than extending the life of less efficient existing models.

One simple energy saving possibility is still only used by around one-in-five kiwi farms. That’s the option to thermally wrap the milk storage tank itself,

creating a thermos flask-like effect.

As milk chiller power use accounts for roughly a third of the electric bill on dairy farms, this is an increasingly popular step for those with applicable chiller setups.
