p Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes public relations manager, Harley Jones, and Austrian conductor, Jacob Noordzij, with the rare accordion
Teacher, conductor and director of the Salzburg Accordion Club, Jacob Noordzij, presented the 1963 Hohner Morino VI M to Kevin Friedrich, organiser of the collection at Dargaville Museum, at the 2014 Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) 67th Coupe Mondiale in Salzburg, Austria. The surprise presentation came after Mr Friedrich had concluded a performance using the unique instrument with the World Accordion Orchestra in Austria. “I couldn’t believe how fortunate I was to receive this as it is very historically
important in the evolution of the accordion, to have the extra extended free bass keyboard,” said Friedrich. “All instruments these days utilise the converter system but this keyboard was important back in the day, allowing a full classical repertoire.” On his visit to Dargaville, Mr Noordzij offered photographs of the official presentation and a sample CD, which will be on display with the accordion in the future. The largest display in New Zealand and potentially the Southern Hemisphere, the Accordion Gems display holds more than 200 instruments, many
of which are extremely rare. CIA public relations manager, Harley Jones, travels extensively internationally attending concerts and events and also attended the meeting in Dargaville. “This museum is becoming part of the living history of the accordion,” he said. “Kevin does an amazing job.” World ambassador for the CIA organisation, Kevin Friedrich, will return to Dargaville for the 12th annual afternoon of music on March 31. The event will be held at the Lighthouse Function Centre. For information phone 09 439 7555. ¢
