The physical work on Northpower’s 11,000 volt and 400 volt power lines begins at the intersection of Jervois and Grey Streets, continues along Jervois into Normanby Street, across

Beach Road into Logan Street and finishes at the intersection of Logan and Colville Road.

 Erica, Sophia and Joseph Tebbutt spent a rare afternoon with the ZM crew recently thanks to a winning bid in a silent auction. Erica attended a fundraiser last year for Ronald McDonald House, which provides accommodation for families who have children in Starship Hospital. Sophia and Joseph were delighted to sit in on the afternoon show and go for a ride in the ZM Black Thunder.

Council asks questions Kaipara residents may soon get a phone call asking questions about the Kaipara District Council and how it does its job.

The National Research Bureau has been commissioned by the council to conduct the survey, through a random selection.

“We want to track what our residents think about what we do,” said community engagement manager, Barbara Ware. “The best way to do this is to interview a representative

cross-section of people and to have this done by an independent group to ensure there is no bias.”

The National Research Bureau is an independent market research company offering specialised services to local authorities throughout New Zealand and has been commissioned to undertake the survey and report back.

Interviewing starts Friday January 30 and is expected to finish on Wednesday February 11.

“We appreciate there will be inconvenience at times but ask that people remain patient,” says Northpower network general manager Graham Dawson.

“The end result will mean that the electricity supply in Dargaville will be more reliable.

“Reconfiguration of the network will lessen the visual impact from the lines and ensure less unplanned outages from faults.”

Work will involve pole changing, cross arm changes and the removal of an 11kV circuit. A number of street lamps are also being upgraded.

Some disruptions to normal traffic flow may be experienced, due to the movement of heavy vehicles.

Should the dates for work or shutdowns be cancelled for any reason, people will be notified of a new date and shutdown times in advance.

A rare opportunity to climb Baldrock Mountain presents itself next month as part of the annual Top of the Rock fundraiser.

Greater youth engagement is a key priority for organisers of this year’s TokaFest.

In its fifth year, the multi-sport event caters for walkers, runners and mountain bikers, both recreational and competitive, and crosses terrain usually closed to the public.

Over 300 people participated in last year’s event, through bush, lakes and farmland and up the iconic Baldrock Mountain.

This year offers more of the same and people can choose from a five or 10km walk or run; a combined 10km run and 15km mountain bike ride; or a 30km mountain bike ride.

The combined option can be an individual or team effort.

“If it’s your New Years resolution to exercise more, participate in more

community events or get out in the countryside more, then entering the Kaiwaka Sports Association’s Top of the Rock event fits the bill for everything,” says organiser Cheryl Anderson.

“People of any age can enter — last year the prize for the oldest participant went to an 83-year-old.”

Top of the Rock 2015 is on Sunday, February 8, and there are plenty of prizes up for grabs.

The annual event is now in its third year and takes place at Toka Toka Tavern on Saturday, March 7.

“TokaFest tries to promote community sustainability, generosity and creativity,” says Olly Knox of KP Productions. “These are all things that we want to encourage in our younger generation, so we are keen to connect with a younger audience and have more young people involved at an organisational level.”

Two ways in which this is being achieved is by enlisting the expertise of local artist Brigitta Bell, who has created this year’s poster design, and a group of students from MAINZ, including Dargaville’s David Andrew, will undertake TokaFest’s sound engineering and stage management.

New to this year’s line-up is the open stage from midday until 2pm.

During this time there will be familyoriented activities, such as art and craft workshops and displays and a dedicated kids area. Circus Kumarani will also provide a space for people to learn, practice and share their skills.

The riverboat Daisy will provide transport to TokaFest for the first time in 2015. Due to tides, Daisy will leave Dargaville at midday and arrive at 2pm.

The late Lothee Diamond was well known in Dargaville for her collection of dolls.

Dressed in national costumes, some with cloth bodies, paper mache’ faces and real hair, the dolls date back to the 1880s.

Upon her death in 1963 Lothee requested the historic doll collection be given to the Dargaville Museum so she could share her love of dolls and their fine workmanship with others and now the dolls are on display for the first time.

Lothee migrated to New Zealand from England with her parents in 1877 as a 10 year old. She arrived in Auckland with her French parents and her precious doll collection came with her.

In later years, Lothee lived in Tangowahine, Tokatoka and Aratapu and worked for the New Zealand Post Office and Telegraph department. In 1920, she married Patrick Diamond and together they lived in Dargaville.

Lothee passed away aged 95 and is buried in the Mt Wesley Cemetery.

After their stunning debut tour of New Zealand in 2014, Other Roads folk trio from the UK, are back and are performing in Dargaville.

The group appeared in New Zealand last year, stunning audiences with their songs, humour and vibrant sound.

After performing at the Auckland Folk Festivals invitational concert, word spread and their following concerts in Whangarei, Palmerston North and Wellington completely sold out.

One of the top contemporary folk bands in the UK today, they perform an eclectic mix of older and original compositions, ranging from soft ballads, Celtic fiddle tunes and

choruses. Gregor Borland, Pete Abbott and Dave Walmisley draw upon their diverse backgrounds in Scotland, England and Africa to create an exciting and original sound.

Kai Iwi Lakes is having a free open day on Sunday, February 1 organised by the Mountain to Sea conservation trust and Whitebait Connection.

From 11 am until 4 pm at the campground, Taharoa domain, there will be a variety of activities arranged, all with the intention of educating and informing people about the lakes.

“The activities will encourage people to learn about why the lakes are so special as they are world class dune lakes,” Whitebait Connection national and Northland coordinator, Kim Jones says.

Get the most out of your renovation When it comes time to spruce up the old homestead, whether for reasons of style, substance or sale, there is always a question of cost versus gain.

Television shows featuring desperate do-it-yourselfers blowing their budgets and running into trouble abound — and nobody wants their own life to imitate fiction in this way.

Tip one — Planning. This seems like a no-brainer, but planning beforehand and sticking to that plan can save a lot of strife. With a plan of your renovation project in hand you can confidently consult with local professionals on price, and these folks will pick up any hidden snags which might trip you up along the way. For example, if you are adding an ensuite to your bedroom, decide early on just how you would like it to work, where you would like the fixtures and fittings, and how you would like everything to look.

A simple sketch can be expanded on with some measurements, and you have a foundation to use when talking to your tiler, plumber, builder and electrician. Resist the urge to change the plan in mid-project, follow it through, and everyone will literally be on the same page.

Tip two — Invest for impact. This is most pertinent when you are looking to renovate to sell, but even in your long-term home, it’s easy to make a big impact on the look and feel of the space without busting the bank. Some rooms look tired simply because of faded or dated paint, or tatty floor coverings.

Much can be achieved without tearing down walls or adding rooms — in the kitchen and bathroom especially, the two core areas looked at by potential home buyers. Rather than construct a new kitchen, is it possible just to resurface the cupboards and cabinets, or revitalise the space with a new benchtop? Would your lounge look a million bucks with a ‘feature wall’ of richly patterned wallpaper, a coat of eggshell white elsewhere and some fresh carpets? Most bathrooms can be transformed by switching out the fittings and not a single sheet of drywall needs to be disturbed. For extra value when renovating, check out your local demolition recyclers. With whole ranch sliders, windows, doors, benches

and even bathroom bits and pieces in perfectly good order, saved from demolished buildings, this is a popular option to switch out tired or broken joinery for a very reasonable price.

Summer proof your home With the hottest part of the year well and truly here, many people around the North are thinking about ways to beat the heat and humidity.

While there have been numerous great innovations touted over the years to warm up the family home in winter, trying to create an oasis of cool in the sweltering heat of summer seems just that little bit more complicated.

The best solution to hot, sticky, stuffy rooms is to generate airflow.

This can be as simple as good placement of windows and doors, but keeping them open when you’re away at work or when tiny insects are swarming is never a good idea.

Mesh screens are a cost effective part of your summer plan, allowing any gentle breeze to work its magic.

Generate one of your own with a ceiling fan — far more effective than numerous small plug-in fans, there is a reason that these roof-mounted devices are ubiquitous in tropical climates. There are even options to

duct cooler air in from outside during the day, using insulated tubing to bring air from under the eaves of the cool side of the house into the living areas.

Insulation is a big part of the equation as well. You may think of the batts in your roof as primarily a weapon against winter chills, but they serve another purpose right now. Insulation forms a barrier between the living spaces below and the fiercely hot ceiling cavity, where, even with tar paper covering the iron or tiles, temperatures can soar into the 60s and 70s.

The good oil for farmers It is a cliché perhaps that every cloud has a silver lining, but it is certainly an apt one at the present, when we have seen the gloom over the downturn in milk prices on the international market being somewhat compensated for by the upswing in beef and wool.

Then too, the farming sector can take heart from another vital commodity cost.

The plunging price of fuel means there will be some valuable savings on the farm, even though there is also the spectre of summer drought crowding over the financial horizon.

Petrol and diesel prices at the pump have dropped by more than 40 cents a litre since October and when you give it a little thought, that is a ‘priceless’ figure for the man making a living on the land.

It means savings across the board — on the operation of farm machinery and equipment as well as in transport costs off the farm — even for the long drive into town for supplies.

It is to be hoped that the cheaper fuel prices also translate into the cost of getting goods to market — road transport, loading and shipping should

all benefit from cheaper fuel costs.

It may well be early days, but with predictions that the market glut which has caused the drop may well continue for some time, it must filter down for the benefit of production costs everywhere.

Another area where we should expect to see some good on farm savings will be in fertiliser application. Cheaper fert as well as chemicals and the cost of application should also come home to stabilise the rural bank balance.

My views are certainly being underlined elsewhere. For instance, the Bank of New Zealand senior economist Doug Steel is expecting a fall in the consumer price index in the next two quarters and a “whiff of deflation” in New Zealand because of the fuel price plunge.

He says: “We’re seeing some of that sentiment filter into interest rate

markets with quite low interest rates, from even already low levels.”

“I guess from a New Zealand perspective we are net oil importers, so a lower price is a positive in the sense that it’s lowering the cost of the economy.”

Ken Shirley, the chief executive of Road Transport Forum New Zealand, also reckons we farmers, as well as other industries, should see the benefits. Carriers have fuel adjustment factors built into their contracts and any savings are passed on to customers.

The Treasur y’s director of macroeconomic policy, Tim Ng says that overall, it’s probably positive — if you’ve got a lower oil price, that’s an input into production that’s imported, so you’re reducing the cost structure of the economy when oil prices fall.”

In closing this column, let me put the whole thing into something that graphically illustrates the savings that are to be made — the price of benchmark Brent crude oil has fallen by more than half since mid-2014 and is now at its lowest in five-and-a half-years.

And that is simply very good news down on the farm! 

Circus festival ‘awesome’  by Joanne Speechly

Circus Kumarani’s 9th annual Northland Community Circus Festival was held at Waipoua Forest Camping Ground on January 17 and 18.

“It takes a community to run a successful community circus festival,” said Jenny Huriwai, who manages Dargaville’s Circus Kumarani.

“Once again we were well supported by the national and international circus community and local whanau.

I’d like to thank everyone who played a part.”

Although the gala show was a highlight for many, the workshops,

games and informal interactions over both days kept more than 100 participants smiling and promising to come back next year. Even the steady showers on Saturday night did little to dampen the spirits of either performers or the audience.

Plans for the 10th annual festival are underway.

“Next year’s festival is one not to be missed!” 
