p Steve Davis from Tauranga drove his Land Rover Skippy and Malcolm Lumsden from Ohinewai drove his ex army 109 Land Rover in the Kauri Coast 4WD Club safari with 38 other vehicles from across the country. Starting in Te Kopuru, they made their way around the top of the North raising funds for the Northland Rescue Helicopter. “It was a six night event and we stayed at schools and a golf club between Te Kopuru and Kerikeri and drove through beaches, forest tracks and farmland. It was a really great adventure and well worth the effort to get here,” said Malcolm.

p Volunteer firefighters from Dargaville and Te Kopuru were joined by others across the district attending a fire on the weekend at Pouto peninsula. They utilised portable dams, two helicopters and a bulldozer to help the firefighters control the blaze which was in vegetation.

Charity store closing its doors

It is an end of an era for the Save the Children shop in Dargaville as it closes along with all other branches across New Zealand.

Some of the best young swimmers in Northland gathered for the Douglas Logging Swimming Northland Age Group Championships, held at the Kauri Coast Pool in Dargaville over the weekend, with Dargaville and Te Kopuru competitors bringing home 22 medals combined.

The store will close its doors for the last time on Friday, January 29 after running for 22 years. Initially the shop was located on the corner of Hokianga Road and Normanby Street opening once a month for three hours a day before moving to McKay’s Arcade in 1998 where it has been ever since.

Current Save the Children president Aym Wade says the store played an important role in the volunteers’ lives.

“It was more than just a shop for us — for many it was a place for social contact and friendship. Without the shop it will be harder to have a presence in our community.

“I would like to acknowledge all the volunteers who ran this shop successfully over many years.”

The Northern Wairoa Save the Children branch will still exist without the shop and will continue to raise funds by various means to help rebuild lives after disasters.

Immediate past president Veronica Simpkin says she will be sad to see the shop close.

“It has been very popular with the people of Dargaville. The things we sell are a little bit different to what the other shops sell but times change and, although the people in Dargaville support us, that hasn’t been happening all through the country,” says Veronica Simpkin.

“We will find some innovative ways to raise funds and hope to have a presence at the Dargaville Riverside Produce Market.”

Over the years of operation the Dargaville shop has raised money through raffles, catering, cake stalls, and donations from volunteers and the community providing a commendable contribution to the National Office.

One hundred and fifty swimmers from 10 clubs lined up for the annual championships to demonstrate their skills at the outdoor 50-metre pool.

“There were many stand-out performances during the three-day carnival, which was blessed with beautiful weather. The wind was down and the sun was up. It went off very well,” says Sport Northland chief executive Brent Eastwood.

Splash Dargaville Swimming Club finished the event with 19 medals in total with Kaitlyn Smith winning one gold and two silver medals whilst Connor Willy was awarded four silvers and two bronze. Quin Waldon came away with two silvers and two bronze.

Matty Douglas left with two silvers and two bronze medals whilst Braedyn Smith won two silver medals. Te Kopuru Swim Club also brought home

some hardware with Ben Eyles winning two bronze medals and Dylan Hines also a bronze.

Northwave’s Callum Prime came first in every event he entered taking home 15 gold medals.

Many of the region’s swimmers were aiming to better their entry times to qualify for the various upcoming national championships such as the NZ Junior Champs for swimmers 12 years and under, the NZ Division two competition, NZ Open Champs and the NZ Age Group Champs for those between the ages of 13 to 18.

Other swimmers to feature heavily included Mia Gordon of Northwave with 10 gold medals, Hayley McIntosh, Jeremy Elliott of Northwave and Paul Linton of Bream Bay all won nine gold medals and Matthew Gordon also from Northwave took away eight golds. ¢

Vince Nair is the lifeline for Dargaville, bringing everything from flowers and fertiliser to food and farm supplies on his Toll truck five days a week.

‘Fun, fitness and friendship’ is what the Kaipara Diamonds marching group are all about as they look for new members to make up a full team before heading to Taupo for the annual May Day competition.

Fijian born Vince has been driving trucks for six years now since he moved to New Zealand in 2009 with his wife and daughter.

“We bring whatever people are selling and customers’ orders to Dargaville,” he says.

Vince’s day starts at 3.30am at the depot in Onehunga, Auckland and arrives in Dargaville at 6.45am to offload some deliveries into the depot.

p The Kaipara Diamonds marching group in Maungaturoto are all about having fun, keeping fit and making friends

The Maungaturoto based group have been going for a year and a half and is made up of women aged 40 to 80 who want to keep fit whilst being social.

Group founder and manager Connie Walker says she has been marching since 1946 when she started in the Hibiscus Coast group. When she and her husband moved to Maungaturoto there was no existing group and her husband suggested she start her own which she did.

“It took a little while to get a group together but now we have eight and would love to have more. We are a very

nice bunch of people and we all really enjoy what we are doing. It is great exercise,” said Connie.

No experience is necessary for new members and the women meet weekly every Tuesday to practice for competitions around the country and attend local events such as parades.

Last year the group travelled to Paeroa and Hamilton and are looking forward to taking part in the May Day competition in Taupo.

“It is nice and you meet a lot of people you know at the competitions,” says Connie. ¢

The price of fuel was reduced again last week with BP leading a cut in petrol prices of three cents per litre and diesel at two cents per litre — after an earlier two cent per litre drop on January 15.

“We provide an atmosphere that our visitors enjoy. The location, mixed with ancient Kauri trees, beautiful scenery and this lovely rural environment, creates an outcome which is quite special. At times our guests arrive stressed and leave relaxed and we really enjoy seeing that change.”

He says the lodge has had a positive level of occupancy this year consistent with the increase in tourism throughout New Zealand.

Dargaville service station prices are inline and consistent with other stations around the country selling at the national retail fuel price. Petrol stations in some areas around the country are offering lower prices as they compete amongst themselves.

“It’s the first time 91 petrol has fallen under $1.80 per litre since February 2015. This excludes the service stations that are discounting prices below the national price,” said AA petrolwatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale.

“While the refined commodity prices are lower today than this time a year ago, the New Zealand dollar has fallen over 13 cents in the past year, offsetting those lower commodity prices. If the New Zealand dollar was worth the same today as a year ago, the pump price would be about $1.65 per litre.”

Mr Stockdale said unlike diesel, petrol prices would never get as low as the pump prices in January 2007 when it was $1.38 per litre, thanks mostly to petrol taxes having risen 28 cents per litre since then. “Even if commodity prices fell to just $1 a barrel, which is all but impossible

Mangawhai Activity Zone is set to receive a boost in funds after the auction of a charity house on February 6.

An internationally recognised and evidence based parenting course, The Incredible Years programme, is taking enrolments for their first course of 2016, offering a range of techniques for those who wish to learn new parenting strategies.

The house, designed by architectural company MyPad, will raise funds for the community project and will go towards a wooden fort in the children’s playground area, a warm up/cool down exercise area at the entrance of the walking tracks, as well as the commencement of stage three of the skate park.

“We have received good discounts from trades people and suppliers and MyPad have built the home at their own cost so whatever we get over and above the cost of the land and the home will go towards the activity zone,” says MAZ chairman and fundraising organiser, Colin Gallagher.

“The house was completed on schedule perfectly to the day. Since then we have been doing some more planting to make it more attractive.”

Lay says: “It’s been a great project to be involved in.

“We’ve really enjoyed working with MAZ and doing something that will benefit our community.”

The trust still need to raise $450,000 to complete the activity zone on top of the $1.1 million already raised.

Mr Gallagher says the biggest expense is to finish off the ‘free flow’ area and skate area.

“Then we have big plans for a sound shell and seating as well as mountain bike tracks and CCTV cameras. There is a big programme ahead of us and if all goes well we hope to have it finished by the end of 2017.”

The Annual Mangawhai Bowl Jam, held on the same day as the auction, is expected to attract around 1000 people and will also raise funds for MAZ. ¢

The interactive and supportive programme consists of 15 three–hour sessions in a confidential and nonjudgemental environment covering a range of subjects, such as how to spend time with your child, how to praise and reward and how to deal with disobedience, among many others.

“The course builds connections between other parents who may never have interacted in their normal circles,” says Katy.

“It’s really nice to see parents and caregivers linking up because they have all come together for the same reason.”

Katy says it is often at this time of year, after the school holidays, that parents notice behavioural issues amongst their children and search for assistance.

“It is a chance for parents to swap ideas, catch up and discuss things. The programme gives them the tools to deal with different situations and to feel like they aren’t alone.”

Te Puna O Te Reo O Takiwira Te Kohanga Reo has operated in Finlayson Park Ave, Dargaville since the early 1990s. This week they celebrated a long held dream with a blessing ceremony of a new playground.

Members of the Kaiwaka community are now operating a weekly Friday market in the Three Furlongs Tavern carpark on the main highway.

“A playground had been part of our strategic vision for many years.

Thanks to the efforts and dedication of whanau who fundraised and saved over several years, the goal has finally been achieved,” said treasurer Sharon Murray.

“The children were surprised and excited to arrive and see the shining new structure.”

Park Supplies Ltd delivered and erected the structure. Whanau volunteers provided the labour to complete the groundwork.

“The blessing was led by local kaumatua Manuera Tohu who is also a

trustee of the Te Kohanga Reo National Trust Board. “Wild cats in the area are a major problem, but we have been assured that cats are not attracted to the ground fill that has been used.

An existing structure was also improved to provide a colourful enclosed sandpit with the assistance of semi-retired builder Errol Hutchins.

“In accordance with the vision of the National Kohanga Reo Trust, we totally immerse the children in te reo Maori during the kohanga hours. It is recognised as the best way to transfer the language. This is an exciting time for our local kohanga.” ¢

“Everyone has to drive through here to go North or South. We are trying to encourage business for our town. This is the perfect spot for a market,” said organiser David Benton.

“People are stopping off and then they go and explore the local shops and area. Even though we have just started it is working really well.”

Public and tourist buses are also stopping at the site when they can to let the passengers have a break, depending on their schedule.

“The locals are very supportive including the Eco village community with

providing their organic produce.” There is jewellery, organic fruit and vegetables and lots of different varieties products.

The mussel and kumara fritters and gluten free smoothies are really popular. We even have a guy that does corrugated iron art.

“It is an opportunity for the young musicians from the area to busk and promote themselves. We believe it is good to encourage the young talent.”

Margaret and John Bishop of Newman Engineering in Dargaville have been offering apprenticeships since 2004.

“John was an adult apprentice in Canada. We know the value of offering opportunities to young people in our community,” Margaret says.

“It is important to realise that getting an apprenticeship is not easy. You can’t muck around in school. We want the brightest and the best.”

Engineering apprentice George Whippy began when he was 18 years old and said at first he lacked the motivation to keep up with his bookwork.

A serious car accident left him with a brain injury. He returned to work with a new perspective on life and the desire to complete his apprenticeship. He now supervises four staff and is in his final year of working towards a National Certificate in Engineering Fabrication Level Four.

Kaihu entrepreneur Dan Hall, inventor of the Fence Detective app, has recently launched his creation on iTunes and is in the running for a Callaghan Innovation award in three different categories.

Dan says he had no idea his lightbulb moment would take him this far and is currently a candidate for the Maori entrepreneur, agricultural and mobile category.

The Fence Detective detects whether or not an electric fence is on and Dan hopes his app will encourage people to explore their surroundings as well as to pursue their own innovative ideas.

“You don’t have to be in America to come up with a good idea, you can do it right here in our own back yard,” Dan says.

He is also working closely with New Zealand Walking Access on their educational resource Both Sides of the Fence which motivates children to learn

more about their natural environment.

“It’s all about encouraging younger people to get outside and enjoy their environment and get them away from the TV.” The idea came to him when he needed to cross an electric fence whilst out walking.
