Sweeping plans to drop the speed limit of nearly all Northland state highways have drawn the ire of civic leaders across the region, including Kaipara councillor for the West Coast-Central Ward, David Wills.

Kaipara businesses and citizens have been concerned by what appears to be a nationwide counterfeiting scam …

Waka Kotahi seeks to reduce road deaths by making roads safer, and has discussed reducing Northland’s speed limit from 100km/h to 80km/h, including all of state highways 12 and 14. “We are very rare in New Zealand in the amount of kilometres we drive on the state

highway network. Our communities and towns are joined together by these roads,” says Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith. State highways are not administered by the district council. Mr Wills suggested that the true motive may be cost-driven.

“It costs less to engineer a road for an 80km/h speed limit than it does to do so for 100km/h. It’s a cheaper option to reduce the speeds than to maintain high-risk roads to avoid serious injury and death,” Wills said. continued on page 4 …

p The Poutō Lighthouse Challenge was a great success for 2022, as competitors and families gathered at the popular seaside spot last weekend to enjoy the day. Organiser Josephine Nathan reports more than $1,000 was raised for the Northland Cancer Society. The event raised awareness not only for this cause but also for the preservation of the natural maritime environment. The philosophy of kaitiakitanga is the basis for Josephine’s establishment of the annual bike, run and walk event, with this being the fourth challenge. She would like to acknowledge the Lions Club, Waka Eke Noa whānau, Poutō Primary School and all those who attended and took part, finishing with a refreshing dive into the Poutō Point waves.

“We awake to being in red again, and while we had three days of ‘release’ to orange last week, we know how to deal with being in red,” says Kaipara Major Jason Smith. The national red traffic light applied from midnight last Sunday and is expected to remain in force for several weeks as authorities assess the impact here of Omicron, which has swept through the rest of the world. “Kaipara people have been really resilient during Christmas and New Year,” says Dr Smith. “However, this time, the real issue is the experts saying Omicron is coming and many people may get sick. “Kaipara has the worst vaccination rates of any council area in all of New Zealand. I have concerns for how we’re all going to fare if what the experts are predicting and what we’ve seen from overseas with Omicron, smashes us here in Kaipara. “Are Kaipara people ready? Every household should put together a plan for how to get through. Every business, including farms, should have a business continuity plan for when staff are sick. Have a household plan. Be ready,” Dr Smith says. The spectre of Omicron has already radically changed the activity landscape in Kaipara and the rest of the country. Here, it has caused the cancellation of Northland Field Days for the second year in a row, which is a huge economic loss to the region. “The option of postponing the event was discussed rigorously, but we simply can’t have exhibitors, suppliers and all the volunteers involved in bringing this event

to Northland waiting around to see what happens with the latest strain,” said event coordinator Megan Walters. “The potential cost to everyone involved will be massive if we were to simply carry on and hope for the best only to be shut down. The Northland business community will also suffer losses of income in hospitality.” Other major events cancelled include the Paparoa A&P Show and the iconic Pahi Regatta on anniversary weekend. “There will be no public events at Pahi due to Covid considerations,” said regatta spokesman Darren Sheppard. Another major visitor attraction, The Kauri Museum at Matakohe, has been operating under the Covid protection framework since it was introduced in 2021. “Visitor numbers have been increasing since the border with Auckland was lifted in midDecember, and the museum has p “Be ready for Omicron” — Mayor Jason Smith large, well-ventilated spaces and comfortable operating under red level, with systems in place to welcome visitors,” FOR ORIGINAL PAINTINGS said marketing executive Grant O’Neill. Kaiwaka residents are set to have a safer, more scenic way to cross State Highway One as work begins on a footbridge project to link the two sides of the town.

Survey underway to understand community energy needs

Northpower is hitting the streets this summer to better understand the needs of its customers in the Whangārei and Kaipara districts. The survey is in response to the significant changes taking place in the energy market, with energy hardship becoming a growing issue in the region and the increasing adoption of alternative energies such as electric vehicles and solar power changing the way Northpower’s customers consume energy.

General Manager Network, Josie Boyd, says energy hardship is a reality for many Northpower consumers and the company is keen to better understand how to support its community with these challenges. “At the same time, we have consumers who are wanting to make their homes warmer and drier, and other consumers who want to better understand alternative energies like solar and electric vehicles, or make energy choices that are better for the environment.

We see it as part of our role to support our community in ways that are meaningful to them. “There are a lot of assumptions in the market about what customers do and don’t understand, and also what’s important to them, so we want to hear from our Whangārei and Kaipara consumers directly, and find out what matters most to them.” The feedback will be collected by community activators out in the community and online over the next three months and will then be analysed to help drive Northpower’s customer engagement and support strategies. The survey only takes five minutes, with participants invited to go in the draw for a weekly $200 grocery voucher. All Northpower customers are encouraged to complete the survey: northpower.com/ electricity/your-energy

Your Energy Fill in our 5 minute survey, get some great energy saving tips AND go in the weekly draw to win a $200 grocery voucher.

The survey will run alongside a consumer outreach programme aimed at helping Northlanders with practical energy saving advice and assistance to help them reduce their total electricity costs. Northpower was recently successful in winning $55,000 funding from the Support for Energy Education in Communities (SEEC) programme to support this work. The SEEC programme is part of a suite of new government initiatives focused on lifting people out of energy hardship. Northpower will work with community partners to reach households in need with personalised electricity advice and support across the Whangārei and Kaipara districts. This includes practical help through home energy assessments, providing free LED lightbulbs and draught stoppers, and help regarding electricity safety in the home.

Be on watch for counterfeit cash u by Andy Bryenton

Kaipara businesses and citizens have been concerned by what appears to be a nationwide counterfeiting scam, with false banknotes catching people unaware. The false notes, which are of a quality that could easily fool the casual observer, were first detected in Taranaki in midJanuary. They have also been found in the Far North and are now suspected to be in Kaipara. However, some of the notes handed into Dargaville police have been real notes with wear and tear. “Our club has recently renamed itself as the Tangowahine Sheep Dog Trial Club after many years as the Mangakahia Sheep Dog Trial Club,” says local club president Steve Osborne. “Mangakahia club held its first trial in 1944 and has now relocated to what was originally the Avoca Sheep Dog Trial club location. The Avoca club ran from 1941 until 1964. That’s a lot of history.” Most of the competitors are based from Helensville to Kaitaia. However, the club welcomes dog triallists from throughout NZ as the action gets underway on February 11 and 12 from 8am. The Conn family farm is the venue for this year’s clash of the canines, situated in the picturesque Tangowahine Valley. Some well-respected names are weighing in to challenge for top honours. Club member Allen Nisbet has been awarded life membership of the NZ Sheep Dog Trial Association and will be there to contend for the top of the podium. Shaun Haynes from the Bay of Islands club recently won the trans-Tasman “Your helping hand”

event with his dog Cam. Other Kaipara based competitors such as Grant West and Roddy Thompson are regular placegetters on the dog trial circuit. The Tangowahine and Bay of Islands clubs have an ongoing rivalry and compete annually for the bragging rights of the Skip Whittaker Memorial Trophy. “To succeed at dog trialling, there must be a strong bond and trust between dog and owner,” says Steve. “This is formed through months and years of training. A little bit of luck on the day can also be of great assistance.”

Dogs and their masters will compete in the Long Head, Short Head & Yard, Zig Zag Hunt and the Straight Hunt, putting a range of skills to the test against the ever-wily flock of sheep. Those who have seen this sport on television are well advised to come and watch in person. Spectators enter free of charge, and it’s a great day out. “Our trial could not proceed without the support of local land and sheep owners, and we are thankful for the Conn family in allowing us to use their property,” says Steve. ¢

At the same time, as up-and-coming cattle breeder Cara Doggett of Wellsford awaits the results from Beef + Lamb’s panel of judges, more young farmers are following her example. They’ve completed a farm internship course that has taken in students from across the region. The students who completed the Whangārei A&P Society supported intern farm programme for 2021 are inspired by Cara’s success. She’s the proud owner of a trophy cabinet of medals and ribbons built up across 12 years of showing shorthorn cattle across the north. She has been picked as only one of three finalists nationwide for an award recognising the rising stars of farming’s red sector. Cara had bought her first purebred Shorthorn stud at age 13. She currently owns and operates the 28-animal Ceejay Stud from her family’s farm near Wellsford. She’s up against Estee Browne of Cambridge and Luke Foster of Morrinsville for the Emerging Achiever’s top prize, announced next week. Meanwhile, 14 interns have passed through the intensive two-year course hosted by Whangārei A&P Society. Open to Kaipara youth who wish to be future leaders in the agricultural sector and students from around Te Tai Tokerau.

p Young farmers have new opportunities thanks to an innovative intern programme; meanwhile, one young local is in the running for a top industry award

This course sets young people on the path toward rural leadership and economic success. It’s full immersion, with four days a week living and working on real farms and one day spent hitting the books. “A huge thank you to the farmers who hosted an intern in 2021,” said Whangārei A&P Society CEO Chris Mason. “We know, for some of you, this worked out exceptionally well, and your intern is staying on-farm with you.

“We have continued to review the programme during 2021. This year, we will see some more improvements, including being able to provide host farmers with a generic training programme employment contract and agreement.” Enrolments for February 2022 are still open. If you or somebody you know would like to take this fees-free, handson opportunity, visit whangareiap.org.nz/ farm-internship-programme. ¢
