The current project spearheads a planned $4 million development project, which Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust chair, Don McKay says is “a project for the community, by the community” with plans for further facilities also underway. These are expected to evolve into hospital care level as well as wider rest home accommodation. “We are well on our way now, with fundraising continuing, to realise a plan that involves us all to care for our people,” he said. Plans originally were for the construction of Stage One as an eightbed dementia unit, but planning has been refined to begin a combined Stage One and Two project, adding an additional six beds. An ageing population has placed an increased demand on the rest home facilities. “The number of people needing residential dementia care outstrips population growth, and demand for dementia services is predicted to grow by seven per cent each year. We are in a position where we are having to turn prospective clients away. And our challenge is to effectively meet increasing demands,” said Mr McKay. Updating kitchen dining and lounge facilities and exercise areas are all part of the project, which will be financed both commercially and through local fundraising.
