After only having a line in the water for about five minutes an eel took the bait and fisherman, Daniel Leers, was excited to announce this was his first catch in New Zealand. Sport Northland is taking over Dargaville’s Selwyn Park swimming pool complex from the Kaipara District Council, and administration under the Kauri Coast Community Pool Trust, with a view to expanding use of the facility in the future.

A decision was made at the KDC’s December meeting to finalise an agreement with Sport Northland to operate the Kauri Coast Community Pool; this followed a discussion last August between the council and the trust on the pool’s operation when the trust suggested Sport Northland could be approached.

KDC communications officer, Ben Hope says “Sport Northland have been given a licence to occupy and will receive council funding to take over the operations of the pool from the end of this season. Our CE has been delegated to finalise the agreement with Sport Northland.“ Under the agreement, with the view that ‘the pool is a great asset to the district and is something council should continue to support,’ KDC has proposed a funding agreement of $321,000 per annum, consisting of $257,000 for operating costs, $42,000 for repairs, maintenance and renewals and $22,000 for water rates, with Sport Northland for three years commencing in the 2018/2019 financial year. These figures are set out in the approved Long Term Plan 2018/2028.

The KDC December minutes state: ‘With a focus toward the future, there is now an opportunity to invest in a partnership with Sport Northland, who have wide experience in this area,(and) currently operate the Whangarei Aquatic Centre and the Kawakawa Pool.’

The minutes also state that Sport Northland will own the pool facility but will pay a token $1 lease on the council land. It is also charged with increasing pool attendance and trying to get external funding to reduce KDC financial support.

‘The pool uses approximately $22,000 worth of water annually paid for by council, which comes from the Dargaville water users’ catchment.

Under the change, water costs will be borne by the general ratepayer, which is appropriate for a district/ regional asset.

‘The pool is a great asset to the district and is something council should continue to support.

Having Sport Northland in place and having formal agreements, such as an LTO and funding agreement, that specifies terms and conditions, will give comfort to council and the community.’ ¢

Landing pad aids rescue u by Paul Campbell

The culmination of two years of work has been celebrated in Maungaturoto with the completion of a fully operational helicopter landing pad at the country club in Bickerstaffe Road.

The project was the brainchild of the town’s Rapid Relief Team (RRT) a group of residents formed to provide mobile catering to support emergency workers attending fires or other incidents, or people displaced by events.

“We started two years ago and got together as a team to support our town,” said team leader, Richard Wearmouth.

“We found soon that emergency callouts were usually fairly short-lived and the idea of a helicopter pad was discussed. So we started fundraising, selling burgers from our mobile unit at town events. We placed cash boxes at local businesses and canvassed

cash, as well as materials and labour.

The pad cost $12,000, and RRT underwrote the last $5,000 of this to complete the project. Northpower donated a power pole and electricity supply, and the pad has floodlighting and strobe positioning activated from the chopper.”

In the past, the NEST helicopter had to alert the fire brigade to secure a landing site, Mr Wearmouth said.

“Now the permanent fully equipped landing pad is there for all operations, and for the St John ambulance to transfer patients. Among businesses contributing, Atlas quarry provided base metal and concrete to finish the project, along with our local labour.”

A day at the beach

It was hard to miss them, though most of us would have tried to. I am talking about the ‘family’ from the UK who made their shambolic way through the North Island leaving a trail of alleged and in one case — proven offences.

Enthusiasts of vintage, classic and muscle cars and bikes were treated to a wide variety for viewing as the vehicles lined up at the Mangawhai Domain recently, in the annual Blackswamp Rod Run 2019.

As a former police officer, I have seen my share of bad behaviour — some of it a lot worse than this. However, even I was appalled at what this family got up to — and particularly so because perhaps the worse behaved family member was only seven.

I want to address what this episode says not about them, but about us — and then look at something that appeared in Kaipara Lifestyler earlier this month.

I was delighted and proud of the reaction of those beachgoers who shared Takapuna Beach with this litter-leaving, obnoxious family. Some of them stood up to the family and stood up for New Zealand. We might be among the most hospitable people in the world, but we are also fiercely proud of our country and if you mess it up you mess with us — as so vividly demonstrated on Takapuna Beach that day. the January 8 Kaipara Lifestyler that the Northland Regional Council is urging fish and shell dumpers to show some courtesy for others and not leave their waste on our beaches.

It is in fact against the council rules to leave waste, though the council admits that it is common.

There are two things here to my way of thinking. First, it’s bad enough to have a UK family come here and mess up at least one of our beaches; it’s perhaps even worse when we do it ourselves.

Second, is that word ‘courtesy’ employed by the council. We New Zealanders can be tough when needed, as we demonstrated in Takapuna — but we are also innately courteous, as, thankfully, is more often demonstrated.

So, I echo the call of the regional council. Northland has New Zealand’s best beaches. Don’t mess them up.

Show a bit of courtesy. ¢

After an invitation to view the spectacular display of machines with their gleaming chrome, well-polished paintwork and V8 engines purring, locals and visitors happily paid entry by gold coin, raising more than $500 for Otamatea High School.

Local motorsport drivers also took their cars to join in the display, including speedway street stocks, super saloons and rally cars.

“It always amazes me what comes out of New Zealand garages, barns and storage units, from Model A to Mustang and many more,” said Aucklander Brenda Chalmers.

American makes and models appeared to dominate the field, but

British and European cars were also represented, with a Jaguar and a VW Combi complete with surfboard welcome surprises.

Sponsors provided 35 lucky prizes to the 165 registered entrants of the event, who then delighted spectators at vantage points along the cruise route to Waipu and back via Mangawhai Heads.

“All the horn tooting, revving engines, cheering and waving just added to the fun of the run,” said Chalmers.

Chalmers added heartfelt appreciation for the organisers. “Thank you for making it such a friendly, relaxed and well organised day that it has become our traditional must-do activity on the first Saturday of every year.” ¢

A family fun day is planned at Kai Iwi Lakes on Saturday, January 26, coinciding with Northland Anniversary weekend.

The free open day is suitable for all ages to attend with many activities to participate in.

With assistance from the Kaipara District Council and the support of many local businesses and organisations, the open day will provide an opportunity for locals and visitors to appreciate all that is on offer at the dune lakes. “A family fun day that you can either enjoy on, at, or in the water,” said Whitebait Connection regional coordinator, Isabel Krauss.

Biodiversity displays and information will be available for those wishing to learn more about the area without getting into the water, while water safety will be promoted for those willing to get wet.

From guided snorkelling where attendees can explore the underwater life, practising paddling skills with a Waka Ama team, to taking part in games and activities — there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Launch races, kayak contests, runabout races, and outboard powered bathtubs are set to entertain summer crowds at the annual Pahi Regatta during Anniversary Weekend.

For those in the mid-Kaipara who have made a resolution to expand their horizons in 2019, a new opportunity has arisen in Maungaturoto. Learning to put pencil to paper and reflect the world through the medium of visual art is something, which can unlock creative abilities people never knew they had, and the hosts of a new series of art classes insist it’s easier than many expect.

Called art classes for total beginners and starting from February 5, this is an opportunity to learn a new skill which can provide a lifetime of fun and unlock a new way to express yourself. Experienced artists Richard and Diana Moore take a fresh approach to help their students master the skills of the pencil and brush, with a proven technique that has even novices stepping up to display visually stunning levels of ability.

Where is Northlands biggest range of roses?

The event has been running, with the exception of some war-time years, since 1886, when the Kaipara Harbour was the highway of choice for the settlement many parts of Northland, and a group of Kaipara settlers gathered at Pahi for a picnic and a couple of boat races.

Across the years the regatta format has settled onto water-based events, and an onshore component with sideshows, carnival rides, beauty contests — anything from Miss and Mrs Pahi, to the ‘best beer belly’ contest. Food and refreshments are widely available.

The event is run by the Pahi Boating and Fishing Club, and club commodore Mike Donald says: ”It’s all systems go for the coming weekend. We have an emphasis on family fun in a safe environment. Look out for the iconic bathtub races, with outboard motors powering actual bathtubs, with a single outrigger for stability. There is a prize of $1,000 for the winner.”

Gordon Murray Just short of his century, Ruawai stalwart, Gordon Murray died at the age of 99, on January 7. He was farewelled by family and friends at a packed Ruawai Memorial Hall to a eulogy detailing a huge commitment to the community.

As part of the growing range of opportunities at the school, the students travelled to Mangawhai for surf lessons. “It was an amazing opportunity, and the Aotearoa Surf instructor was fantastic,” said organiser and senior school teacher, Kathryn Gibbens. During 2019 the school has several scheduled activities, including sporting events, school camp, school production and Te Reo instruction and kapa haka.

Picking up where we left off at Christmas (three weeks ago but somehow feeling like longer), a key decision was made by Council at its 20 December meeting to hold the ship steady and maintain for the Annual Plan 2019/20 the forecast direction, rates and service levels of Council.

This is being done to keep to our commitments set in the Long Term Plan 2018/28 but is only achieved through $1m of belt-tightening by Council staff. It would have been easy to slash budgets and have lower levels of service as a result, or let it go and let rates rises soar, but we’ve taken the harder route and found extra efficiencies across Council while also maintaining levels of service.

The forecast rates levels for 2019/20 should remain unchanged. Running a tight ship is crucial, especially when we have in Kaipara the fastest growing District in the North Island. I’m delighted to report that Council will be doing more with less.

As there’s no change to the direction of Council, its actions and service levels, then there’s no requirement for consultation on the Annual Plan 2019/20 as that would be a duplication of last year’s LTP consultation. That’s another efficiency gain! While Council won’t consult here, the Annual Plan must be adopted

by Council by 30 June 2019. It will

be produced to highlight the works Council will be carrying out and a programme of information events will let everyone know what this Annual Plan means for Kaipara residents and communities. Expect more efficiencies as we go.

On top of these belt-tightening and efficiency gains, as we roll into the new year I am increasingly confident Kaipara is closer to receiving development funding from the Provincial Growth Fund. So far, other parts of the ‘surge region’ of Northland have benefited from the fund, and we’re working hard to make it Kaipara’s turn next.

In 2019 our tide must turn. We’re on deck, lean, rested and ready for action.

Here’s to a prosperous and happy new year for all of us in Kaipara — and let the rising tide come in.

He was a founding member of the Ruawai Fire Brigade in 1952 becoming a life member, after serving as fire chief for 20 years, just one of the many ‘hats’ he wore, as outlined by the funeral celebrant, Dennise Brownlee.

“He was a founding member of the Northern Wairoa Car Club in 1956, a founding member of Otamatea Aero Club in 1965, a founding member of Ruawai Lions Club in 1978.

“He formed the North Kaipara Air Patrol in 1990, in 1991 he was appointed air search adviser by the National Rescue Coordination Centre for the Kaipara, and in 1993 he set up the North Kaipara Coastguard.

“No wonder when in 2012 he was awarded a Local Hero medal as part of the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards.”

Gordon Murray was born and lived in Remuera for 20 years. During the second

world war, he served in the Pacific with the Royal New Zealand Airforce.

“After the war, he joined with his mate Dick Batty, and they purchased the rundown Shell garage here in Ruawai, renaming it Murray’s Garage,” said Dennise.

“He married Daphne in 1951 and two children, Maxine and Don, followed. In 1969 Daphne and Gordon parted and he was single for five years before marrying Noni, and his family grew to include five stepchildren and grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.

“At 77 Gordon suffered a bad accident and wasn’t expected to live, but he did.

He wasn’t expected to ever walk again, but he did. Once recovered he was back to attending all of his meetings and tending to his garden. Gordon was an active member of the Ruawai community for more than 70 years and will be missed by many.” ¢

Former Otamatea High School student and resident of Maungaturoto, Gabriella Seager, has been awarded a scholarship from the prestigious Toi Whakaari, the NZ Drama School, based in Wellington.

The Mangawhai Army Cadet Unit has appointed two new officers and launched a new curriculum plan loaded with activities for new members. They invite those interested to attend an upcoming open evening on Tuesday, February 12 at 5.30pm at their camo building, 733 Settlement Road, Hakaru.

Gabriella began studying at Toi Whakaari last year studying for the NZ Diploma in Scenic Construction and Properties — more commonly known as set and props — and is one of three students to receive the Bill Guest Award, which will pay for her fees for her second and final year in the course.

“It is a huge relief to myself and my parents to have my fees paid. It has been a financial burden for us, as I am living so far from home, but we know that the sacrifice will be worth it because I am training in something that I really love,” said Gabriella.

As a creative student at Otamatea High School, she studied drama, art, wood technology and fashions and textiles, also contributing to school productions by painting sets and assisting with lighting.

She became heavily involved in the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, painting sets and finding props for the productions, applying makeup to the actors and taking part in the shows.

The 20-year-old aims to gain employment making sets and props in the film or theatre industry. ¢

Former cadets had outgrown the 18-year-old age restriction, and the unit was under threat of closure, but with the new officers acting second lieutenants’ Tinsel and Donnelly now in place, the unit has a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm.

Young people joining Army Cadets participate in a range of activities including navigation, bushcraft, tramping and leadership. There are camps with other units, parades such as ANZAC Day and Armistice Day, nationwide competitions and opportunities to make friends and try new things.

Acting second lieutenant, Anastasia Tinsel, says being involved in the Army Cadets has taught her about structure and discipline and has boosted her

confidence. “I have a child in Army Cadets and the improvement in his attitude, self-esteem and motivation to achieve have improved beyond my expectations. He has made some fantastic friends and is committed to being an excellent role model for younger kids.”

The New Zealand Cadet Forces are aimed at young people 13 to 18 years old and are comprised of the Sea Cadet Corps, the New Zealand Cadet Corps and the Air Training Corps. The organisation is affiliated to the New Zealand Defence Force and is supported in partnership with the community.

Ready to roll out a hero’s welcome

New art gallery exhibition

This March, more than 400 riders will take to some of the most scenic roads in New Zealand, traversing forests, hills and shorelines in the 2019 BDO Tour of Northland.

In a new exhibition, which opened at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville last week, artist Robyn Nathan presents He wairua nga Taonga (these gifts are holy). A celebration of the land and its spiritual power, this exhibition has an over-arching theme, which draws on our natural world for inspiration.

It’s a landmark event on the cycling calendar, encompassing skill levels from novice to masters, cycling tourists to elite competitors. They’ll take in the scenery and tackle the miles — and they’ll reach Dargaville to receive a warm welcome.

That’s the plan put forward by the Dargaville Community Development Board and their allies in this endeavour — the Kaipara District Council, Northern Wairoa Boating Club, Sport Northland and Time To bike store. All parties agree that hosting a leg of this huge event has massive tourism, visibility, sporting and commercial significance for the town, and they are determined to make 2019’s event a stunner.

The council are doing all they can to make it easier for cyclists to enjoy our region’s roads, with a finishing line right at the Dargaville Band Rotunda. DCDB plan to liaise with local merchants and with schools to flood the streets with window displays and festive bunting in a cycling theme. Experienced riders, the Time To team know just what technical and

maintenance needs will be required.

The commodore of the boating club has expressed an interest in helping make the tour a success, knowing that fellow members are a civicminded and welcoming crew.

Of particular importance, of course, is the ability to feed and house such a large contingent of athletes with their supporters.

No one hostelry or restaurant can achieve this, so a general call goes out from the DCDB and event organisers for chefs, hoteliers, baristas, cooks and cafe owners to contact them and help formulate a unified plan in which all will benefit. Activities, games, outdoor entertainment — it’s all possible, and with the help of the town’s business community this valuable event will not only celebrate Dargaville; it will be a memorable fixture for riders for years to come, like those characterful stopovers so beloved of cyclists in the Tour de France. Robyn has been working as a professional artist for more than 25 years and has travelled extensively, as far as the United Kingdom.

She says that she is pleased to return to the land where she grew up, and her collection of intricately composed, multi-layered works reflect the dreamlike symbolism which accompanies a sense of home.

Ms Nathan studied in Australia at the Sydney College of the Arts, graduating in 1993 with a BA in visual arts and later receiving honours at the Southern Cross University in Lismore, New South Wales. He wairua nga Taonga is proudly local, evoking images of the Northern Wairoa, Waipoua Forest and

other natural treasures. The collection of prints in Robyn’s current exhibition are described as ‘inspired from her love and connection to the spirit of the land expressed through cosmological and mythological patterning relating to her cultural heritage — Te Roroa and Ngati Whatua’.

Anchored by two imposing panels, which flank the smaller, more intricate works like gateposts, visitors will find themselves surrounded by a blend of images and colours which combine the natural world around us with a spiritual element.

The Hokianga Road gallery opens daily from 10am until 4pm — the exhibition is on display until February 13. ¢

A phenomenal amount of rubbish was collected from the beach at Glinks Gully recently as part of a series of activities over summer at the popular holiday spot.

In slightly more than an hour, a caged trailer full of rubbish was collected by hardy groups of children and adults on a sweltering day and transported to the local landfill. The Kaipara District Council supported the annual beach clean up by allowing the disposal free of charge.

Nicola Puharich, a member of the local sports committee, said that the event has been running for a few years now and numbers attending are slowly increasing as more people understand the environmental cost of rubbish on our beaches.

“Not only is rubbish ugly and potentially dangerous to us but it kills countless animals each year, from small birds and fish to whales,” she said.

The beach clean up is organised by the sports committee, which also arranges the ever-popular New Year Sports Day, along with the treasure hunt and sandcastle competitions.

Children taking part in the event were rewarded with lollies and a lucky dip prize. Some of the young people involved are shown in the attached photos standing in front of some the haul from this year’s clean up. ¢

Paparoa Show is gearing up for a day of family fun on Saturday, February 2 with a line-up of outstanding entertainment and all the excitement of rural competition as well as the new addition of circus events.

“Nor th Kaipara Agricultural Association plan to make this year’s show an action-packed and fun day for our visitors and competitors as well as a memorable one. We look forward to seeing everyone on show day,” says publicity coordinator Liz Clark.

“Whangarei Brass Band and Stampede will both be attending, providing a range of musical renditions and ambience for showgoers while the team from Circus Kumarani will be providing free family workshops for younger visitors to try out their skills at juggling, hooping, tightrope walking and much more.

Despite Mycoplasma bovis, the cattle events will still be going ahead, as well as classes for calves. Biosecurity measures are now set into place — so all risk is minimised, and everyone can continue to bring cattle to the show and have a great day out. Cattle ring coordinator Susan Clayton says she is confident all will go well on the day and is looking forward to seeing competitors return for the event.

“We have the calf, novice and RAS young handlers classes for the young people; there is also a new trophy for

this section. The beef breed classes are exotic, traditional, small breeds and allbeef breeds.”

Paparoa-based Northern Districts Team Roping Club will be another feature at this year’s show. Club president, Steve Allen says: “For anyone looking for a way to get into the sport of team roping, barrel racing and other stock skills the A&P show day is a great opportunity to get involved with your horse in the horse games of the day and meet people.”

The classic Kiwi A&P show is as much a part of our national character as touchstones like the pavlova, the buzzy bee, the All Blacks’ spine-tingling haka or holidays by the ocean.

It’s become far more than the very English village fetes and rural shepherds games it sprung from and exemplifies all which is unique about the rural life.

Paparoa’s forthcoming A&P show is 143 years old, with a history stretching back to the earliest pioneer days. It shows how much our ancestors valued the social and competitive aspects of show day — the high point of the farming calendar.

The English village fete may have been the start of some of the traditions of show day — the presentation of prize animals, of course, goes back to medieval times, when bloodstock was traded among lords and free farmers alike to ensure a plentiful source of food.

arenas of Greece, Macedon, Persia and Rome predate our horse sports by centuries and illustrate the fact that the horse has been humanity’s companion since the dawn of agriculture.

Our first A&P show was held in the Bay of Islands in 1842, based on the 1780s pastoral shows, which came out of the Scottish Highlands. There, farmers were fiercely proud of their skills and competed with one another to show both each other — and the English, who were still seen as occupiers — that they were superior in livestock breeding, agrarian cropping and more. A peculiar New Zealand addition to the A&P show has got to be the sheepdog trials — first instigated officially at Hakataramea, South Canterbury, in 1889. While this means the first official trials in the world

were held at Bala in Wales, the casual rivalry between drovers and their dogs stems from the MacKenzie Country here in New Zealand, likely in emulation of rogue and skilled sheep herder James MacKenzie himself.

While our Kiwi A&P shows lack the massive scale of America’s county fairs — some of which boast one third of a

million visitors and include motor racing, carnival rides, large musical concerts and celebrity appearances — they are uniquely ours, and a time-honoured tradition when the country shares some hospitality with the town for the good of all. After 143 years, Paparoa boasts one of the best — it’s definitely worth a visit! ¢

It used to be a matter of survival — and one which dominated the late summer days. Gathering, chopping and stacking firewood was the only way to get through the winter, and even today, when it is more a matter of comfort than a grim necessity for most, the art of preparing a perfect woodpile is not lost.

Thankfully, as with many chores, technology lends a hand, and it’s come further than you might think in recent years. Advancements in chainsaw and log splitter development have delivered a new generation of machines, which offer ease of use and a quick finish.

Though the fundamentals are still the same, the application of lightweight battery power, longer-lasting chains and portable, lightweight splitters cut the job down to size.

Those fundamentals are all based on time — because it takes time for fresh cut wood to dry out ready to warm your home in winter. How sunny days speed the process — and to be fair, most of us would rather have the job done early, the pile neatly stacked and covered away. So now is the time when tools like chainsaws are being pulled out of sheds after a long delay — and many will exhibit problems, especially if they were put away without due care. The fact is, saws left with old petrol, crumbling fuel lines or primer bulbs, dull chains and damaged bars may be better off consigned to the parts bin at your local small engines workshop — because

new saws are inexpensive and come with a fresh warranty. Add up the labour, parts and consumables, and it may make sense to invest in a newer small saw. Bigger models are less expendable, but could certainly do with, for example, more modern chains with tougher teeth.

Even more satisfying than the smell of sawdust is operating a modern kinetic log splitter. These machines pack a massive punch — up to eight tons of pressure — and instead of slowly splitting a log they slice even tough timber with a whack like a giant woodsman’s axe.
