p The annual Douglas Logging Swimming Northland 2015 age group championships were held at the Kauri Coast Community pool in Dargaville.

Competitors came from 14 different clubs in Northland, including Auckland. Certificates were awarded to the swimmers who recorded the fastest times in each session, in each event and to those who broke records in the pool. Competitor ages ranged from as young as seven to 22, across a varied field.

Legal proceedings against Mr McKerchar and also against the Auditor General Lyn Provost in the High Court, over the controversial Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme, were instituted in August last year and the documents were then filed shortly before Christmas. No dates for hearings in the coming year have yet been set.

Kaipara GreyPower members are concerned about the paid parking system in place at Whangarei Hospital.

Kaipara GreyPower president, June Klenner believes that the proposed new parking fees will severely disadvantage residents who live in rural areas.

“We think it is totally unfair. We can’t take a taxi or a bus like people in larger cities,” she says.

The Kaipara Community Health Trust provides a Health Shuttle to the hospital but when people are sent appointments that do not coincide with the times that the shuttle bus runs, they then must find someone to take them in a private car or take their own vehicle and pay to park during their hospital visit.

Time is running out for Kaipara residents to make their voices heard regarding the possible replacement of two one-lane bridges near Matakohe.

The deadline for submissions is 3pm January 30 and local bridge campaigner Sue Reyland is urging people to make their voices heard.

“The bridge project has a good chance of being selected for funding but we need support. Submissions are very important and will add tremendous weight to the campaign.”

Pahi’s annual carnival, the long-running regatta weekend, has campsites “booked solid” says Pahi Beach Holiday Park manager, Julie Dry. “There’s really ‘no more room at the Inn.”

Always held on Anniversary Weekend, the event attracts par ticipants and spectators from Auckland to the Far North, and beyond.

“The campsites have been booked for months,” said Ms. Dry. “In fact it pretty much boils down to people re-booking for next year as they are leaving.”

The campers are a mixture of locals and visitors who take part, or just watch, plenty of harbour-side fun and games, as well as launch and powerboat races, kayaking contests and all manner of aquatic activities,

with the crowd swelled by day visitors.

Top of the bill is always the bathtub races. There are also fun rides and activities for the youngsters, and a marquee hosting beauty contests and live music.

Boat races will begin at noon on Saturday with registrations from 10.30am onwards. There will be a hangi dinner at $10.00 per person, serving from 6pm. Entry into the tent will be at $10.00 per person with a live band.

On Sunday, the bathtub races start at 12 noon and the Miss Pahi contest in the marquee at 2.30pm. ¢

Court action awaits former CEO A statement from the Auditor General’s office stated that the council decision on legal action meant the matter was in the hands of the department’s insurers.

Last year, Ms Provost had cited the former Kaipara District Council decision to expand the Mangawhai project to $57.8 million as ‘inappropriate’.

The KDC chair of commissioners, John Robertson said at that time that the former chief executive should be held to account for his role in the previous elected council’s failure to assess and set rates legally, to ensure

a number of statutory requirements were met and its failure to manage its finances prudently.

“Elected members and the Kaipara community should have been able to rely on the chief executive’s advice.

But in a number of areas it was very poor. Mr McKerchar should be held to account for his role in those failings.”

The Employment Relations Authority is an independent body set up under the Employment Relations Act 2000 and has the power to make legally binding decisions including financial remedies. ¢

The Northland Regional Council is asking you to make a submission to its draft Regional Land Transport Plan.

Representatives from the Regional Transport Committee held a meeting in Dargaville last week to raise awareness of its draft Regional Land Transport Plan.

Submissions can be made online at www.nrc.govt.nz or by writing to the Northland Regional Council.

The RTC is made up of representatives of the Northland Regional Council, NZ Transport Authority, and the three District Councils. Commissioner Peter Winder is Council’s representative on this Committee. The Committee is chaired and administered by the NRC. John Bain, Chair of the Northland Regional Transport Committee said that limited funding – both local and national – continues to be the biggest issue facing Northland’s land and he is quite correct. In the Kaipara around $47 of each $100 of the general rates revenue Council collects is spent on roading.

The Plan takes a broad ten year view of Northland’s transport needs, but also focuses in greater detail on projects over the next six years (2015-2021). The plan is Northland’s collective bid for funding assistance from the National Land Transport Fund, administered by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

There are three drivers for the Plan: economic development, resilience and safety.

I would like to show why these three drivers are important to Kaipara.

Safety is something that everyone should be concerned with. Many locals have a strong view about the safety of having single lane bridges on State Highway 12 at Matakohe. I have heard many stories of near misses, of fog affecting visibility.

There are other safety issues too such as narrow roads that make it stressful to drive past trucks.

The main project included in the 10-year transport plan to improve our safety is the replacement of the one-way bridges at Matakohe into two-lane bridges with improved approaches.

I encourage you to log on to the Northland Regional Council website or to write to the Northland Regional Council with your submission. Our roads and what happens to them over the next 10 years is important to all of us. Please provide the Northland Regional Council with your feedback on what you think the priorities should be.

We are totally reliant on our roads to move goods and services into and out of Kaipara and Northland. Two of our largest industries, dairying and logging, both use State Highway One, Twelve and Fourteen to get around. To get to the state highways, they travel on local roads. Fonterra’s tankers need to be able to get to factories at Kauri and Maungaturoto and logging trucks need to be able to get to Marsden Point. Our other local produce needs to efficiently get to markets in Auckland and overseas. We want roads strong enough to be able to be used by trucks without causing damage to the roads for other road users.

Resilience or rather a lack of it, was highlighted last winter when on two separate occasions, State Highway One had to be closed because the road had subsided. One closure happened just south of Kawakawa and the other on the southern side of the Brynderwyn Hills. It was chaos. Drivers had hours added on to their journeys over roads not built for high traffic volumes. In our case, traffic going south was redirected through Mangawhai, and traffic going north had to take the Paparoa-Oakleigh Rd or use SH12.

Maureens Sudlow’s love of writing is presented in her newly published book ‘Antipodes’.

The Dargaville library hosted an intimate morning with Maureen reading from her newly published selection of poetry. The opportunity gave her listeners the experience to hear and feel with conviction the writings from the author herself on a personal level.

“When we have the opportunity to host our local authors and celebrate their writing I like the library to be involved,” said library manager Lisa Salter.

“It is my first poetry book,” said Maureen. “I write poetry in the Japanese style Haiku, which is short, as it has more impact rather than being long and boring and I love the tension between the lines of Haiku. With some long poems you can feel quite dumb at times trying to read them. Most of my poetry does not rhyme, it doesn’t need to.

“Not all my poems were originally written with a book in mind, some are from years of writing. I love to write and

poetry is easy.” Her poem, ‘Dying among friends’ was created not long after she moved to Dargaville where she witnessed the strength of friendship between three men and a man in hospice care where she then worked. “The friendship these men had really hit me, it was so strong,” said Maureen.

Attending the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit camp was an opportunity to think about the future for a young Dargaville student.

The Dargaville Youth Charitable Trust sponsored 16-year-old Dargaville High School student John Amoore to attend a recent Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre Student Leadership Challenge Programme.

John said he attended with the view of helping underprivileged youth in the future himself.

“Attending my first camp and hearing the talks on situations other young people go through in life is what made me realise there are always others worse off than yourself and it made me very aware of the need to get support.

“I want to learn and better myself for the future so I can influence and help the underprivileged youth of our community in a positive way through outdoor experiences,” said John.

The camp included teambuilding and problem solving, a high rope course, abseiling and rock climbing as well as leadership training.

Busy start to year We’ve had a busy start to the year with numerous crews working on multiple jobs around Kaipara and Whangarei Districts.

The Whakapara to Helena Bay 33kV insulated express line is underway until early February, where two crews are attending to maintenance.

A two week job at Pipiwai will see maintenance completed on 11kV and 400 volt lines, while similarly, in Mangakahia Valley, an 11kV maintenance job is in motion.

The major feeder rehabilitation project in the main street of Dargaville continues with additional crews from Whangarei in place.

Night work will begin in early February and it is hoped the job will be completed by early March.

The entirety of the job will see a big difference to the security of electricity supply.

Elsewhere in Kaipara, a conductor replacement project and 11kV maintenance is happening at Tokatoka and Mititai. In Maungaturoto an underground job is being completed at a commercial development.

Underground work involving pillar changing is also being carried out in Tutukaka and Matapouri. Further underground electricity work is being completed at subdivisions in Maungatapere and Tikipunga.

In February, multiple reconductoring projects (including 11kV maintenance) in rural areas which are often inaccessible in winter will be started. Waiotira, Mititai, Babylon Coast, and the area from Hikurangi to Hukerunui will be among the areas covered.

The public have voted with their feet on the gas pedal, acclaiming a new king in the world of light commercial vehicles.

For the first time in decades the evergreen Toyota Hilux has been bumped from the top spot, making way for the award-laden Ford Ranger ute.

“It’s a fantastic result for the Ford Ranger and we’d firstly like to thank all of our Ranger customers and our dealers throughout New Zealand for their support,” said Corey Holter, Managing Director of Ford New Zealand.

“A lot of attention was put on the sales race this year but we’ve always said it’s about the customer and leaving it up to them to decide. Well, the customer has decided and there is a new number one in New Zealand. We are very proud of the Ford Ranger.”

other temptations that will be hard to ignore. Already the first of the new Falcon XR6 models has landed, with the highly anticipated final version of the XR8 muscle car to follow, along with a new version of the best-selling Focus. The new Mondeo is making waves overseas, shattering the mold of the mid-sized executive car. And later in the year we’ll see not only the Everest SUV, based on the Ranger platform, but also the undisputed ace in the pack, the new Mustang.

The Everest in particular is piquing curiosity — if only because the Ranger underpinnings it will boast have been so well received by Kiwi farmers, foresters and more. With a proven platform to build on, expectations are high for this new SUV to take the country by storm.

With Toyota’s Land Cruiser firmly ensconced as the big name in the large,

over-seven-seat 4x4 arena, Ford will be hoping for a repeat of the Ranger’s performance in toppling the Hilux from its position. Initial design sketches and concepts point toward a vehicle of similar size and space to the Range Rover or Land Rover Discovery, sitting above the Kuga in the Ford spectrum.

It’s been a long time coming, but this changing of the guard at the top of the Kiwi ute game has come at a crucial time for Ford. With so many new models set to build upon the success of their flagship light commercial, it’s a fair bet that old Henry would be proud of the blue oval’s current direction.

On the road with a Kiwi legend

The Mk 2 Morris Minor may have been born in England in 1952, but it’s been claimed as a classic icon of Kiwiana.

This imposing specimen is the alltime track record holder at England’s Brooklands circuit — despite being built over 75 years ago. The NapierRailton special packs a 24 litre W12 Napier aircraft engine into a lightweight roadster frame, and was commissioned in 1933 to smash the world speed record.

Needless to say, this British bombshell did so in style, and remains the fastest car around the Brooklands track. Not thanks to superior pre-war

muscle, however- due to the conversion of Brooklands from an autodrome to an aerodrome during the 1940s. The vintage shape and distinctive sound of the little ‘Morrie’ are imprinted on a nation’s memory, with many a story to tell. Now Ruawai Four Square owner Naresh Ranchod has one of his own — a replica of the famous Four Square delivery vans which plied the rural roads of mid-20th-century New Zealand. Most country folks of a certain vintage will remember the grocer’s van, which was

in many cases an exact likeness of the 1971 Morris now gracing the Ruawai Four Square’s forecourt. United with that other great Kiwi icon, ‘Cheeky Charlie’, the little van is a community effort, with local auto painters, mechanics and general good sorts pitching in to get it back on its wheels.

The restoration has taken just over a year, and involved a complete strip-down to bare steel and parts. Now, with the acclaim of Four Square’s Group Manager and a successful debut in the Ruawai Christmas Parade, the little Morris is set for some minor final tweaks, a re-VIN, and a future as a working delivery van once more. ¢

Counting the costs Hard on the heels of Christmas and holidays, back to school can be an exciting time, but costs can also bring stress and strain on the family budget.

Enrolment fees, uniforms, transport, stationery, school bags, even provision of lunches — it all adds up.

Budget advisors are well aware that some families may find it difficult to avoid tension at this time, and good advice is to make back-to-school preparations fun and get the family to get involved with a fun atmosphere so that budgeting and saving is an enjoyable activity.

It also creates an awareness of the costs associated with everyday items among children and contributes towards a sense of responsibility.

In fact, organisation is key, and writing lists is a great way to identify costs and by being organised before you head off to Warehouse Stationery, or other outlets, you’re less likely to fall into the overspending trap.

Make sure you have your list of the new school year needs. Identify the most important requirements — what is needed now, and what perhaps can be postponed until later in the year — for instance, sporting clothing and equipment might wait until the winter season comes around. Another good

tip is to make an inventory of what is already in the family.

Perhaps an older sibling can pass on books or other items that may serve a ‘second term’ rather than being bought new. Check around — there might be pens and pads around the house that can go in the schoolbag.

The cost of education cannot be taken lightly in New Zealand households, with a survey at the beginning of the last school year showing ‘free’ state education will cost the average parent nearly $35,000 by the time their child finishes secondary school.

ASG Education Programs surveyed 1,000 parents and the not-for-profit organisation’s projections showed Kiwi parents would pay about $16,000 for a child starting their eight-year primary school state education at the beginning of 2014 and that more than $18,000 would be needed for the same child’s secondary school years.

“In the past we have always convinced ourselves that a government education is a free education,” ASG chief executive John Velegrinis said at that time. ¢

New Mangawhai fire station on its way u by Colin Patterson

Mangawhai is set to get a new fire station, although the New Zealand Fire Service is unwilling to say when it will open.

For a number of years Mangawhai’s volunteer brigade has operated from premises in Wood St, but area commander Mike Lister says the building is a safety hazard.

“It’s falling down — it’s dangerous.

It’s unable to be occupied.”

is unusable’. Mr Lister says the fire service has provided a portacom building at the rear of the existing station.

But he concedes conditions are less than ideal.

The fire service approached the council seeking a licence to occupy on Mangawhai Community Park, next to the St John ambulance station which is currently being built. After the proposal was put out for public consultation, the council received 27 submissions — all in support.

Last Tuesday council commissioners unanimously accepted a recommendation to approve the granting of a licence to occupy.

“We’ve now got the OK,” says Mr Lister. “We’ll now have to negotiate with council over the conditions of the lease.

We can start building very quickly once we finalise the lease.”

Mr Lister is reluctant to say how long the process will take or when Mangawhai can expect to see its new station. But he says the new station

will benefit the community. “We’re catering for the growth of Mangawhai.

And the new station will have better access. ¢
