“I guess it’s finally sunk in,” she said of her honour in the New Year list.

“But I have just kept working as usual.

I actually baked some Afghan biscuits to celebrate,” she quipped.

The award was bestowed for services to Maori art, and she has credited it to “my iwi, my marae, Toi Maori Aotearoa, Nga Kaihanga Uku, particularly the Artists Collective of Te Tai Tokerau and their superb artists and exhibitors — this is really a recognition of all those people,” she said.

Ms Urlich spoke to The Lifestyler as she packed for a trip to Australia, and was due to fly out on Tuesday this week.

“I’m getting ready to leave, heading a group of Tai Tokerau Maori artists to a workshop in Australia with a group of Aborginal artists we have established a relationship with, and then hold a joint exhibition in that country.

“In the meantime it has been work and of course keeping up with all the emails and phone calls over the award.”

Ms Urlich was born in Te Kopuru and went on to do an art major at Auckland Teachers College as well as a masters at Elam School of Fine Arts, becoming a teacher, and specialising in clay as a medium.

Before joining the New Zealand Order of Merit, she has received Te Waka Toi grants, convened the National Banner Project for Waitangi, and written, presented and published papers, nationally and abroad, on Maori art and Maori artists. She has co-curated 14 national and international

exhibitions, won commissions for public works, been guest artist at nine national and international festivals, and exhibited in 38 exhibitions among other achievements in a lengthy list.

Kaipara’s other New Year honour, a Queen’s Service Medal for services to the community went to Mangawhai’s Jean Goldschmidt, who was a founder of Mangawhai’s Walking Weekend, which attracts huge crowds to the town each year.

“It was a bit overwhelming, but nothing like this happens on its own — it is a tribute to the community,” she said.

“We had a small gathering on New Years eve to celebrate, but we’ll plan on a big party. After all, we haven’t got the medal yet!”

Jean has stepped down from organising the Walking Weekend. “It will now be administered by a community group as it grows from strength to strength — 100 volunteers were involved last March.”

She will continue working with the Mangawhai Tracks Charitable Trust, which has been instrumental in expanding the network of walkways in the district. 

New vocation for long-serving teacher  by Colin Patterson

For the past 21 years the Snell’s Beach Great Summer Art Exhibition has been a showcase of local talent, growing alongside the popular coastal community to become a well regarded feature on the summer calendar.

 Donna Shadick was proud to display her work for the people of Snells Beach, as part of the 21st annual Great Summer Art Show. A second place award and a sale for her painting ‘Power’ followed.

With the Snells Beach, Matakana and Leigh area now enjoying some considerable prestige, this annual competition attracts a huge number of patrons and art lovers, as well as a wealth of creative works on display.

In the recent exhibition and competition, Te Arai based artist Donna Shadick has scored a significant coup, with her painting ‘Power’ being picked from among over 400 entries to receive an award. While this year saw Donna achieve second place overall in the intermediate category (the largest category in the contest, reserved for artists for whom art is not their fulltime job), it’s still a fine achievement when one considers the scope of talent on display.

Donna’s painting, ‘Power’ depicts an African rhinoceros, advancing confidently on the viewer. Clever use of light and

shadow seems to make the imposing beast step right out of the canvas, and close-in detail picks out the rhino’s tough, weathered hide.

The aptly named painting was snapped up by an astute buyer during the exhibition.

Like many creative people, Donna says that the choice to depict such a subject was pure inspiration. While she says that she enjoys painting images from nature, the idea to capture the strength and presence of rhinos in her exhibition pieces was simply an inspired idea — though the thought of traveling to Africa to see such creatures in the wild would be fantastic.

Up next for the local artist is the Mangawhai Art Trail in March, which promises to offer a similar crop of locally produced artworks at a very high level, across a variety of mediums. 

After three decades at Maungaturoto School, Alison Robinson has said good-bye and this year she will expand her teaching horizons.

Ms Robinson has a new job with a private company and the year ahead will see her visiting schools throughout Northland and working as a maths facilitator.

With her own children having finished university, Ms Robinson says the time is right to move on. “I’m definitely not retiring. I’m moving in a different direction.”

“I get the best of both worlds. I’ll still be supporting teachers but I’ll be working with a wider group of them,” she says Her old school farewelled the long ser ving teacher as deputy principal.

“I came here as a firstyear teacher and after teaching for six years I took a couple of years off to have children. Then I  Alison Robinson who finished at Maungaturoto School in December after 30 years came back to work and was a huge change,” she says. “But the have been here since.”

In her time Ms Robinson has been passion of the teachers hasn’t changed and the children are still the same.” a jack of all trades.

Boating club eases access Handy new business for Dargaville

With new drink driving laws in force, Dargaville’s local boating club has taken steps to ensure their patrons arrive home safe and happy.

The Northern Wairoa Boating club has purchased a van to make access to functions and social events easier for members and club users.

“Patrons can organise with us the time they want to be picked up or driven home from the club. We will possibly work on a shuttle timetable for dropping off.

“The van is still in the infant stages of progress, we expect the shuttle to be a great success in the future,” said committee member Dennis Hunt. “We get busy particularly over the summer

period and the club is a great place to come and meet people. People can apply to join as either a social or full member by contacting the club.”

Drink driving limits changed on December 1, this change means that drivers aged 20 years or over cannot drive if they have more that 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, or the alcohol in their blood is more than 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

For drivers under the age of 20 years, the limit is zero. 

Kiwis have always been resourceful when it comes to those renovation projects, and this has seen a rise in popularity for demolition traders — centres where doors, windows, fittings, benchtops and cabinetry are taken from deconstructed homes and given a new lease on life.

Just bowling along It was a case of sun-block and hats at a family bowls day at Maungaturoto over the New Year break which attracted several family groups among 76 players who braved sweltering conditions.

“People from Paparoa, Pahi, Whakapirau, and Mangawhai took part as well as many from Maungaturoto,” said organiser, Albie Paton.

“Many of the children taking part showed considerable promise. We had a total of 76 people and after sorting out the teams we played three games of 50 minutes each.

“A fourth game was scheduled but owing to the heat we decided three were enough. In keeping with the fun day, points were deemed rather irrelevant and the winners were all decided by numbers drawn out of a hat.

“The two main prizes — a night for two at the Scenic Hotel in Paihia and a trip for two to the Hole in the Rock with Fullers were won by Dave Orford and by one 'Dwayne from Auckland' who was staying at Paparoa and saw the poster in the hotel there and cycled over with a mate for the day.

“Thanks to Scenic and Fullers for their support as well as the many other sponsors on the day.” 

Tinopai School principal, Sonia Kaihe was thrilled with the day. While she is still to meet with her organising team to formalise the official results of the Tinopai Fishing Contest held last Saturday, but if euphoria was the official result, it was there in spades.

“We were very pleasantly surprised at how well it went,” said Sonia, admitting to ‘some trepidation’ as alcohol in the school precincts was banned this year for the first time.

The event raises funds for the school, and in the past has provided computers and last year, a fund was started for a van to transport sports teams to competitions against other Kaipara schools.

“It was a really great crowd and a great atmosphere with things like the winner of the $1,000 spot prize immediately donating part of his win back to the school,” added Ms Kaihe.

The winning snapper weighed in at 6.2 kilos.

“In fact, I managed to buy it at the auction after the prize-giving. It went

The Dargaville Dalmatian social club are holding their second annual horse trek on Saturday, January 31 at 10am.

Respite care is designed to provide a short-term break for someone caring for a loved one at home.

 There’s a real sense of friendship and community among the residents at Kauri Coast - and for many people, visiting here for respite care can be an extremely positive experience

It can also provide a positive, stimulating and worthwhile experience for the person in a residential care home — which may even be an introduction to a longer period of care at a later stage.

The whole purpose of respite care is to provide some well-deserved time out for the carer to help relieve stress, restore energy and promote a new sense of life and balance. It also provides an opportunity for the person receiving care to participate in our care home environment first hand.

Most full time carers and their loved ones are entitled to some respite care. Respite or short stay care can be accessed via respite and carer support funding, or you may choose to pay for the service privately.

This year it is around Glinks Gully, Te Maire and Ripiro Beach. Last year we had a lovely ride, at Mititai.

“In this year’s ride we are meeting at Tim Antonio’s farm at Glinks Gully. He will be leading across a few farms in the area with fantastic scenery and views from forestry to beach, and stopping at the Te Marie school for lunch then continuing on along the beach and riding through the Glinks Gully community and heading home around 3pm.”

“It is a good day out and the opportunity to ride with a large group is not always an option available for horse lovers. You do need your own horse for this trek, children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult.”

Safety at sea is a package deal

Restricted fire season starts

Coastguard volunteers around the Northland coast have seen an increasing number of craft putting to sea as the weather has improved, and with it an increase in incidents.

A restricted fire season is now in place for all rural areas of the Kaipara District.

This means that permits are required for outdoor fires. Visit www. havingafire.org.nz for application forms and further information.

The restrictions do not apply to gas barbecues, hangi, cultural cooking fires, wood-fired barbecues, spits or braziers. These are permitted provided certain conditions are met.

Cooking fires are permissible if: supervised by a responsible adult at all times; a pressurised supply of water is at hand; the fire is put out as soon as cooking is finished; a clear area of at least 10 metres is maintained around

Operations manager for Coastguard Northern Region, Ray Burge, says those incidents have remained relatively minor, in the context of the recent drowning fatalities at the Manukau bar.

“Some of these can be put down to just bad luck at the time,” he said.

“However, many are preventable events, such as battery or fuel problems which indicate a lack of preparation and maintenance before setting out on the boat.

“But we have been pleased to see an increase in communications with skippers reporting in on the radio with details of time planned, destination and passengers on board and so on.

“What we are really looking for is skipper responsibility. As much as communications gear and life jackets, it is important that someone on board, the skipper, is responsible for safety. It is not just one thing — it is a package of responsibility, including avoiding alcohol, and ensuring everyone is safely back on shore Meanwhile, as a volunteer organisation, funding is critical to Coastguards continuing operations and they seek support with the chance of a big payback through their summer

lottery. Ticket holders stand to win one of 20 stand-out prizes including first prize of a Toyota Highlander GXL and Haines Hunter SF485 cruiser. There are three more boats to win plus a luxury holiday, a huge 70" Sony TV and local Coastguard units are selling tickets.

Each ticket they sell raises $7 for the area concerned.

“Buying a coastguard lottery ticket is a great way to have a bit of fun, be in with a brilliant chance of winning a sensational prize, and support the lifesaving work of New Zealand’s search and rescue volunteers,” said North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard president Walter Smith.

The lottery is authorised to raise funds to enhance the operational standards of 70 dedicated Volunteer Coastguard Search and Rescue units by providing search and rescue equipment and training.

It closes on February 12 and is drawn by lot at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre in Auckland — the results published on February 22.

The restrictions came into force from midnight on Friday, January 9 and will remain in place until further notice.

A Kaipara District Council spokesperson says if the summer remains dry, it is quite likely that a total fire ban may be required.

Restrictions are now in place throughout Northland. 

Prepared to weather the hard knocks  by Andy Bryenton

The Polaris Ranger has proven a hit on Kiwi farms, with its combination of utility, safety and economical power.

In both petrol and diesel powered forms, the tough side-by-side UTVs have become a fixture of the rural landscape, spawning many imitators and contenders for the crown.

That’s why Polaris have engaged in some serious research before unveiling their new Ranger 570 — a machine which they say sets a new benchmark.

To do this, they haven’t turned to the lab or to a specially designed wind tunnel — not even a closed racetrack.

They’ve instead taken in feedback from actual working farmers, listening to the demands of our terrain and our hard-asnails rural conditions. They’ve been told — loudly — that a machine fit for parks

maintenance or a hunting jaunt along a tidy trail is likely to take a hammering when subjected to the knocks, bumps, hard labour and muddy winters which are sure to be thrown at any serious farming tool. What has come out of this process is new from the ground up.

Polaris began by strengthening the chassis and suspension components with thick, heavy duty steel for endurance, and easy-access grease fittings for quick maintenance. From the winning formula of the Polaris Ute super-ATV they have brought in fourwheel descent control, a safe and surefooted way to tackle steep and slippery terrain. Ground clearance is higher,

suspension travel longer, engine power up by 10 per cent, and power steering is now standard.

The core of the Ranger’s new incarnation is a powerful 567cc engine producing 44 horsepower, all fed to the ground through a clever four-wheel drive system and those grippy, knobbly tyres.

And, although it will soon be covered in proper Kiwi mud, it’s not a bad looking beast either, in fire-engine red trim.

Polaris burst onto the scene with their

original Ranger, carving out a niche as a versatile working man’s UTV and winning fans with no-nonsense performance on the farm.

This new iteration of the Ranger stays true to the old rule, and doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any indications.

But it does improve on what is already a popular package, and its ‘heavy duty’ rural focus is sure to be welcomed by those who now see the UTV as a farming necessity. 

A better farm outlook emerges The economic outlook this year for New Zealand farming is largely fine, but with just a few clouds on the horizon.

Many regions like Northland have enjoyed good rainfall through December and generally there has been substantial grass growth throughout the region.

The beef boom is providing a huge economic bonus.

Despite the lowest milk payout forecast in six years, many dairy farmers have been able to capitalise on the current high beef prices by selling cull cows early, and beef stock that has been raised on runoffs. The current trade conflict between Russia and America is quite interesting to follow. The American alliance keep telling us that their trade embargo against Russia is causing the Russian economy to decline.

But a recent article in the New Zealand Herald says that the Russians are looking forward to the 2015 year, despite the country’s economic and political difficulties The Russian president is enjoying up to 87% support according to a recent poll. It may take some time for the two world economic superpowers to reconcile their differences.

Meanwhile, New Zealand farmers will face some challenging issues this year which will have an impact on their private property rights, and the way they conduct their farming business.

The government’s new legislation regarding water rights and the threat of agency bureaucrats using their power of right of entry onto farmers’ private property are just two of the issues of concern.

The recent action taken by WorkSafe New Zealand inspectors against a Marlborough farming couple, which resulted in them being fined $40,000 altogether between them in the

Blenheim District Court for not wearing helmets while riding their quad bikes on their farm, raises some very serious issues in regard to the right of entry by government agencies onto a farmer’s property. Surveillance cameras were used in an ‘out to get them’ approach and that is abhorrent to right thinking people. When one looks at court fines that have been awarded in other cases, the award of $40,000 is extremely excessive and is out of kilter with how the rest of New Zealand society is treated.

It is ironic that there is now a call by some cyclists for the law regarding the wearing of cycle helmets to be reviewed, and it seems that if you have a sympathetic doctor a cyclist can obtain an exemption certificate which does not require a helmet on the road. Farmers of New Zealand is of the view that the current policy of forcing farmers to wear helmets when driving quad bikes on their private farm properties is unworkable for many reasons.

Farmers of New Zealand does support the wearing of helmets for road

use. But many of the helmets that are on the market today do not guarantee full protection.

It is our understanding that the majority of deaths on farms due to farm bike accidents are caused through injury to the body. According to reports by the Department of Labour the most common accident causing serious injury or death was a slow speed sideways roll on the side of a hill. There are thousands of bikes ridden on farms and by the urban community.

We believe that farm bike manufacturers, farmers and Government agencies need to come to a common position on how to safeguard riders of farm ATV bikes as a result of bike rollover, and get the law changed accordingly. While Farmers of New

Coconut Cream and Lime Zest Seafood Pasta Try this seasonal treat with lashings of fresh fish, mussels, scallops and prawns.

You’ll need — seafood — any mix will do of shelled prawn tails, scallops, mussels, white fish, crab, shrimps or calamari. Two limes. Two cans of coconut cream. Ricotta filled ravioli or tortellini (this can be bought pre made for ease of cooking). Cream cheese, a little fresh coriander, a red onion, butter and some crushed garlic to taste.

Pan fry the seafood in garlic butter just until it is cooked through. At the same time, boil your pasta until al dente. Add coconut cream to the seafood pan and reduce the heat as low as you can, stirring and folding the coconut cream through the seafood mix.

Add a small amount of fresh coriander, a very finely chopped red onion, and a little more garlic along with a generous pinch of pepper. Allow to simmer, stirring

throughout, just until the coconut cream is warm. Thicken as necessary with cream cheese or sour cream for a rich, decadent flavour. Not much is needed, but depending on your seafood choice the sauce may need to be made a little more robust.

Finally, grate the zest from two small green limes into the mix, squeeze the limes themselves into the pan (omitting the pips!) and stir a final time before layering the rich sauce and seafood over the ricotta filled pasta. Serve with a chilled white wine of your choice. 

Clever quilters get creative  by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville Quilters is a club for like-minded ladies who enjoy the creative, engaging and skilled craft of quilting.

The art of creating intricate, artistic works with needle and thread has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, driven especially by the advent of modern, high-tech sewing machines with advanced quilting functions. Some are now so thoroughly modern that they integrate directly with tablets and laptops via wi-fi in order to bring any design you can imagine into reality.

The club meet on the third Tuesday of each month to share and learn quilting and patchwork projects, to have fun and help the local community.

The group are pleased to have a number of community projects in process at any one time. Over the past year they have run projects for the local hospital, the Plunket Society, Women’s

Refuge and the Cancer Society. The Dargaville quilters also hold a bi-annual exhibition of their work and from the proceeds have donated to the Fire Service, Hospice Kaipara and the Rescue Helicopter amongst others.

This year they are hosting two workshops to promote the craft and engage new members with the fun and fellowship of quilting in the Kaipara. The first is set to take place in February, with nationally recognised tutors coming to town to teach members — and other interested Kaipara ladies — contemporary patchwork and quilting procedures. It’s a great way to get involved with this vibrant and multitalented group, doing their bit for the community while having a good time. 
