p Twins, Paige and Brooke Curley visited Dargaville over the Christmas break from Kawakawa Bay in South Auckland and enjoyed the opportunity to ride their mini quad bikes along the shoreline of Ripiro Beach on New Years Day. “It is a really long beach and we had so much fun on our bikes. We really like it here,” said the girls. It was their first time to the area and the pair were escorted by their parents, grandfather and friends as they travelled along the shore and learnt about riding on the beach safely whilst having a fun family day out.

A draft reserve management plan has been open for public consultation since December 22 and is sparking interest with lakes users all over the country.

Taharoa Domain Governance committee chair Peter Winder says the plan concentrates on restoring, regenerating and protecting the lakes and recognises the important environmental, recreational and cultural

value the lakes have for locals and lake users all over New Zealand.

“The core of the draft plan is to protect and enhance the environment, while also making the lakes and domain accessible for a wide variety of activities and recreation,” said Mr Winder.

“There are concerns around safety and how to mix the different uses of the lake as well as concerns about the

potential for impact, given the special quality of the lakes and the waters.

There is the potential for a fuel spill and concerns over what issues that would cause. There are also issues around what comes off vehicles when they go in and out of the lake and what environmental impact that has.” continued on page 3 …

It was really cool, fun and exciting,” said Ryan who managed to catch a lot of waves on his first few days out on the water.

p Sandcastle competitors gathered together after the sandcastle competition at the annual Glinks Gully New Year’s Day Sports with Miss Glinks Gully Senior — Sophie Davies. There were towers and flowers, Sponge Bob and dinosaurs on show amongst other sandy creations. In the sport section there were tug-of-war, egg and spoon, running and sack races to name a few. “The event has now been going for more than 100 years and the day went really well,” said event organiser Cherie Antonio. “Considering we had to postpone it due to the wet weather we had a good fun crowd with about about 150 people in attendance which was absolutely fantastic.”

Dr Alayne Hall’s whanau, friends, professors and dignitaries came together at Tama Te Ua Ua Marae in Kaihu to celebrate the achievement of her Doctorate.

Her research involved five years of study which investigated Maori mother’s experiences of partner violence and the relationship dynamics involved with the nurturing of affectional bonds with children.

“Her findings are a catalyst in changing how abuse cases are dealt with amongst indigenous people across the world.” said Professor Jane Koziol McLain from the Auckland University of Technology at the ceremony.

The aim was to find solutions that would reduce violence in our communities.

“As a population group Maori are disproportionately overrepresented as both victims and perpetrators of violence and it is important that we seek solutions that stop intergenerational patterns of violence occurring,” said Alayne.

Alayne’s mother was born at Te Kopuru Hospital and was raised primarily in Kaihu. “My parents raised eight children and worked as market

gardeners, initially without the luxury of power.

“We were encouraged by my parents to return home to Kaihu and not to forget our humble beginnings. I worked in the kumara gardens and at the Kaihu sewing factory.”

The Health Research Council of New Zealand Maori doctoral scholarship provided the main funding support to enable her research study.

“I believe it is imperative to share and celebrate our achievements no matter how big or small with each other. When we do this we counteract the negative messages and beliefs we have about ourselves and the negative way in which we are often portrayed as Maori,” said Alayne.

“It was important for me to celebrate graduation on the marae with whanau and friends to boost others to pursue their dreams and to start a new story of hope, encouragement, aspiration and achievement. These are the new narratives for whanau, hapu and iwi.” ¢

Mr Winder says there are ongoing water quality tests undertaken by the Northland Regional Council which show that the water is in very good condition and they want to keep them that way.

The draft plan includes promotion of the domain as an educational, scientific and tourist destination and to increase water and land-based passive recreation.

“The proposal is that boats not powered by the wind or human effort will be excluded from the lakes.”

The plan aims to protect wahi tapu or sacred sites, increase revegetation of native bush, review trout release and encourage social, cultural and sporting events.

The draft also suggests the closure of Promenade Point campground by 2018, an upgrade of day-use facilities and to ban powerboats from 2018 or earlier.

“This is a draft plan for consultation. The final plan will guide the development, use and management of the lakes for the next decade. We need to know what domain users think of the proposals.

The draft plan may well be changed as a result of public submissions,” Mr Winder said.

Mr Winder said banning power boats might affect tourism “but the potential effects will be both positive and negative. It could result in different uses of the lakes than is currently the case but could open the door to a raft of new users.”

The lakes are administered through a co-governance arrangement and Te Roroa Iwi have an equal voice on

the governance committee. “They also have priority in making sure the lake is not subject to exclusive use by any one particular group.”

A Facebook page has been set up to oppose the propositions made in the plan and has gathered over 3,000 members since late last year with many people concerned banning powerboats will have an adverse effect on tourism to the area.

An open day was held on January 5 where council staff were at the domain to provide information about the consultation process. Subsequent open days will be held on January 15 and February 8.

Information about the consultation process and copies of the draft plan and the proposed by-law are available on council’s website and consultation closes 4.30pm on March 22. ¢

The New Year is off to a good start for the team at Halo Hair Design who have recently moved from McKay’s Arcade to their new premises on Victoria Street next to Blah Blah Blah Cafe.

The new salon includes a separate colour station and beauty room where they offer waxing, eyebrow work, massage and spray tans.

“We have noticed a lot more foot traffic since moving from the arcade,” owner Leanne Pomare says.

“The first couple of days we were open we had quite a few walk-ins from tourists. More people have noticed us in our new location and have come in to have a look.

“In the arcade we were tucked away and business slowed in the afternoons.

Now that we are on the main street we are quite surprised by how many people are still in town after 4.30pm.”

The renovation of the empty shop was done over the summer break with friends and family all pitching in to get the work completed for the New Year.

Halo Hair Design is made up of a team of four with three senior stylists including Leanne.

Her daughter Jasmine works as a qualified beautician and is in her second year of hairdressing.

The family friendly salon is open late on Tuesdays and some Saturday appointments are available depending on demand.

With only five years of painting experience behind her, Donna has entered the exhibition three years in a row and came second in the 2014 intermediate category as well.

“It was a very nice way to end the year,” she says of her most recent win.

The exhibition saw over 430 other artists exhibit their work in a fundraising event for the Mahurangi East Tennis Club from December 31 until January 3.

Market Day trial a success u by Ann Morgan

The Kaipara District Council held a Market Day in the main street of Dargaville recently which was a result of the community planning week held in March calling for people’s ideas for Dargaville.

“There was a significant feedback from members of the community wanting a pedestrian zone in town and this was a trial to see how it could potentially work,” said community planner Annie van der Plas.

“It was a huge success and very positive. The majority of businesses were pleased with the atmosphere and many commented on how good it was to see so many people socialising.”

The Riverside Markets were in the centre of the street with games, seating and plants spread around the event which created a relaxed atmosphere and an opportunity for people to enjoy the extra space.

“Babylon Coast Nursery did a great job of the planter boxes and Broadspectrum — previously Transfield Services, Recreational Service and Laser Electrical also played a key part in setting up the street scape,” said Ms Van der Plas.

“The Dargaville Business Forum, Dargaville Arts Association and Riverside Markets were all key in supporting the event and making it a success.

Celebrating Christmas customs p Arapohue School students and local singing group Take Six gathered at All Saints Mititai to put on a service with song and drama. The students had been learning about Christmas traditions and began the service with a procession of Christingles, a lighted candle symbolising Christ as the light of the world.

A play written by church member Patience Cutts, produced and directed by Diana Russek and Angela Burrows, followed and told the story of Saint Nicholas’ life.

Wales and Mangawhai unite Greenways gets room to grow u by Ann Morgan

Originally from Wales, photographer Josie Gritten married Roger Bull from Mangawhai after they met in Greymouth where Roger was running a backpackers.

Bigger and better things are on the horizon for Greenways Trust with preparations underway for a new building at their current site.

“We then lived in Mangawhai for three-and-a-half years and relocated to my homeland for eight years. Roger retrained as an osteopath whilst we were there. We always said we would return to New Zealand when he had completed his studies,” said Josie.

They returned to Mangawhai in November 2015 with their p Morgan, Elizabeth, Josie, Max and Roger Bull have recently returned to live in the Mangawhai area three children. The purpose built, disability friendly building is expected to be complete early this year and will replace the current office buildings and workshops, meaning everything will be under one roof.

“The new facilities will mean easier public access and a much nicer environment for everyone to work in,” says Greenways Trust general manager, Dianne Fowlie.

Greenways provides housing for those with intellectual disabilities and arranges day programmes, community par ticipation and employment.

The trust also operates a firewood

service in Dargaville and employees cut, split, deliver and stack wood for their customers.

Greenways have been at the current site for eight years since they outgrew their previous depot.

Regatta still going strong

Tinopai’s school coffers received a welcome boost with the success of the annual fishing contest to raise funds for ‘education outside the classroom.’

In 1886, a group of Kaipara settlers gathered at Pahi and had a picnic and a couple of boat races and the long-running Pahi Regatta was born.

This Anniversary Weekend, the regatta continues in the tradition of more than a century under the new auspices of the Pahi Boating and Fishing Club with fun both on and off the water.

The Pahi Holiday Park camping ground becomes a small town of wall-to-wall tents, motor homes, caravans and house trucks for three days of harbourside fun and games and local residents and visitors — some from other boating clubs from as far away as Dargaville and Helensville partake in launch and powerboat races, kayaking contests and all manner of aquatic activities.

Holiday park manager, Julie Dry, says the facility has been booked out virtually since last year’s event.

“We are out of space this year so latecomers are advised to check out other facilities in the district,” she said.

As well as myriad on-water events, launch races, kayaking, bath-tub racing and runabout events, there are sideshows and stalls, children’s amusements, as well as plenty of food and drink available.

The sometimes dramatic bathtub race attracts all eyes to the water, while a carnival atmosphere is in progress ashore. In the big marquee, live music and beauty contests combine to keep visitors well entertained, along with

an evening meal on the Saturday, and dancing into the night.

The emphasis will once again be on plenty of fun, plenty of sport and plenty of entertainment with the overall emphasis on safety and family enjoyment.

The events begin on Saturday, and on the Sunday, contestants in the bathtub race, with each craft limited to a two-horsepower motor, will be vying for a winner’s purse.

The Pahi Regatta once attracted steamers from Helensville loaded with Aucklanders, to take part in greasy pole competitions, horse swimming races, and other long-abandoned events as political correctness and OSH regulation gradually eroded the activities of yesteryear.

The early days of the regatta were recorded by the late Mavis Smith, whose family still farms in the upper Kaipara area today.

‘The regatta was one of the years’ highlights. The launch races provided such speed thrills as they were able — lumbering craft, chiefly working launches, plugging sedately around the course with the officials themselves being in some considerable doubt as to who won what.

The regatta today is a more spectacular event with modern and faster craft and modern amenities ashore. ¢

“We had a hugely successful day on Saturday,” said principal Sonya Kaihe.

“The weather was a dampening factor early on but the sun came out and we had a super day, with a good auction of some great fish.

“It was kid friendly too, with two bouncy castles and facepainting, while entertainment was provided by a saxophonist and several singers.

Quickfire raffles were popular too.”

While a final accounting is still to come, school office manager, Judy Edwards said “we certainly made money and everyone enjoyed an awesome day.”

Her comment was echoed by Tinopai fire chief, Alan Crabb. “We had a crew standing by as a safety measure during the day — in case of an accident — but it all went really well. A huge success for the school.”

An estimated 50 ‘crew’ were on hand to keep the event running smoothly, including parents of pupils and a large number of local people from the wider community.

“Thanks to all who were so hugely helpful and we look forward to another successful contest in 2017,” said Ms Kaihe.

Although the management of the grand old historic pub are keen to introduce the locals to more new acts, a campaign by appreciative rock fans has seen the Northern Wairoa re-book a popular show from 2015.

When Dreams, the Fleetwood Mac tribute band, took to the stage late last year, they played to a full house. Touted in a tongue-in-cheek manner as ‘better than the real thing’, the band’s spirited re-interpretation of classics from top albums like Rumours and Tusk got the crowd up on their feet and dancing.

While the original members of Fleetwood Mac still tour on occasion, their status as rock royalty — and their advanced years — puts them in the same category as the Rolling Stones, and unlikely to visit Dargaville.

Summer is a time to travel, and with the urge to hit the open road comes the desire to taste the local flavours of the places we visit. So, what delights will visitors to the Kaipara be telling their envious friends and loved ones about this Summer?

We’re known, as a region, for that prince of tubers, the humble Kumara as well as for some of the finest cuts of meat and fresh seafood in New Zealand.

This abundance of fresh ingredients lends itself to some simple classics, but it’s when a little extra twist is added that we strike culinary gold.

Take for example two very different examples of a messy, finger-licking favourite — pork ribs. Recently added to the menu at the Village Cafe in Paparoa, sticky ribs are one of the stars of their new evening menu. Meanwhile, the Aratapu Tavern’s ribs are just as succulent and melt-in-your-mouth tender, but they’re treated to lashings of spicy, smokey Texan style sauce, as befits the venue’s Southwestern flair. Both are worth the short drive from anywhere in the Kaipara!

Another interesting new take on an old favourite has emerged from the kitchen at Matich’s Premiere Seafood Restaurant. Fry Bread has become part of a hearty culinary tradition in rural New Zealand, and now Matich’s are using it as the basis for a gourmet burger packed with prime sirloin, garden salad and a mild yet flavourful sauce. Surely more decadent than a simple sesame seed bun, but a great combination of the traditional and the trendy, making something more delicious than the sum of its parts!

All across the district you’ll find artful chefs adding their own interpretation to classic dishes. It would take a whole Summer road trip to try them all — but then again, isn’t that what this time of year is all about? Alternatively, head to your local outdoor market, grab

some fresh produce, and see what you can invent for yourself. While the sun’s shining and the evenings are

long, there’s a whole lot which can be achieved with nothing but a BBQ and some inspiration. ¢

Serves 4

1 onion, cut into wedges

1 tsp wholegrain mustard.

2 Tbsp brown sugar

1 pepper, deseeded and cut into chunky wedges

1/4 cup olive oil

Freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup lemon juice

Method: Place the prepared vegetables in a baking dish. When cutting the onions, leave part of the base on so the wedge stays together when cooked. Combine the mustard, oil, lemon juice, sugar and pepper.

Pour over the vegetables. Mix to evenly coat. Bake at 200°C for 25-35 minutes or until tender and golden brown. Alternatively cook on a medium to hot barbecue plate for about 10-15 minutes or until tender.

The calf club section has returned to the show — for calves only this year to be held at 9.00am for juniors up to 12-years-old and seniors 13-19 years old. There will also be a couple of classes for yearling animals. Entry fee is $5.00 per animal.

“The Equestrian section will have side saddle classes available beginning at 9.00am on the Saturday. This new section should be a good attraction and the in-hand horse section will be held on Sunday February 14.”

Not only did that skare tha helloutame, but he set fire to a hay bale. Boss hadda pour beer froma keg all over Gazza before he got burned too.

Then his mate Pete tripped over wile he was dancin’ wiv Plumbas gerlfrend, an’ knocked over tha drinks table.

Farming outlook ‘uncertain’ Farmers of New Zealand operations director, Bill Guest, says the farming outlook is uncertain at best, on the heels of polls taken by farmers which show many expect little improvement in the year ahead.

“We don’t have a clue when things are going to improve in the industry,” he said. “We have had low prices for wool and beef for a long period of time in years past. This is not a shortterm thing. It doesn’t matter if you are freehold or have a big debt. “ Milk prices have also done nothing to boost farm confidence.

“I don’t believe things will improve until the western embargo is lifted off Russia. This is having a profound effect as China are in unity with Russia,” added Mr Guest.

“The world economies are so intertwined — you can’t have major players having embargoes against each other.

“The legal team at Farmers of New Zealand are working hard and we are

managing our clients very carefully.”

Mr Guest says farming has always been unpredictable and that is just the nature of the lifestyle.

“We have had wool, meat and lamb crashes but I think this is the worst since the depression as we don’t know when we will see light at the end of the tunnel. How can you deal with things when the world is in chaos? The last two auctions for milk powder have dropped eight percent in total.

“We encourage our members at Farmers of New Zealand, to call us. We are doing our best to help those in need.

The 57 Squadron Dargaville Air Training Corps marked the end of the year with friends, family and dignitaries at an award presentation and dinner at the Dargaville Aero club rooms.

The Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters participants recently celebrated their very first graduation following a successful two-year course.

Run by the Dargaville Medical Centre and in conjunction with The Early Years Hub, HIPPY is a programme for families with children aged three-and-a-half to six-year-olds to prepare them for Primary School. Eight pupils graduated their 60 week course in December last year.

HIPPY co-ordinator Heather Moselen said there was a great turn out with around 100 friends and family members turning up to support the graduates.

“They have all started school and I have received good feedback from their teachers about how they are settling in. These children start school already knowing how to hold a pencil and listen to instructions,” said Heather.

Children learn numeracy, literacy and listening skills over the two years with the help of their parents and Heather

says the course is intended for those who live rurally in the Kaipara or come from educationally or economically disadvantaged homes but anyone is welcome to enrol their child.

The students made their own korowai or capes which they wore to the ceremony where they were presented with a framed diploma and a portfolio of their course work.

The course is 85 percent funded by the Ministry of Social Development and the remainder is raised through grants and donations during the year.

“As a unit we did really well last year and the cadets enjoyed camps, flying days, a shoot over and attended the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in Whangarei amongst many other activities.

“Some of the cadets have been involved for up to five years now and their achievements have been fantastic in that time,” said flying officer and unit commander Rhonda Gilligan.

“Joining the cadets helps create confidence, leadership and life skills for the youth to use not only now but throughout their life and it also teaches them respect.”

Amongst the awards was the Cadets’ Choice which went to leading air cadet — Abby Bakulich.

“This is the person the other cadets choose as the best cadet of the year. This was an outstanding accomplishment for Abbey and we are very proud of her. It shows she has had a big impact on her peers over the year.

“New recruits are always welcome and also anyone wanting to become an officer. Cadets can join at 13-years-old and the squadron are starting back on the Monday, February 1 at 7pm at the headquarters next to the aero club on Hoanga Rd.” ¢
