Mangawhai responds to survey  by Ann Morgan

A Kaipara District Council survey of Mangawhai residents has provided valuable feedback for the council, which is considering what will be needed for the town’s long-term development.

The survey is part of preliminary work for a Mangawhai Town Plan which would guide development and change as the town grows. According to respondents, the main challenges facing Mangawhai are infrastructure demand and lack of funding to pay for it, traffic and parking congestion, and preservation of open space.

“The survey is one of the starting points to finding out what residents want and don’t want as Mangawhai grows,” said commission chair John Robertson.

“It is important that we get it right, not just regarding infrastructure such as roads and other services, but other things that make our towns places that are easy to live in. It includes

considering what residents value such as views, the harbour and beaches, and how they use the town’s amenities.

“We hope to be able to consult with the community about the town plan during the 2016/2017 Annual Plan process.” continued on page 7 …

 Fishing off Glinks Gully turned out to be a day to remember for Ben Wade when he hooked his 151 kilogram marlin at the same time as his fishing partner Johnny Kuljish hooked a 156 kilogram fish.

They weighed the marlin in at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club weigh station. It took the pair about an hour to land their catches. “It was awesome to hook up at the same time,“ said Ben. “We had to keep crossing over each other during the fight which made it that much more difficult. We won’t forget this day in a hurry.”

 Cruz Tobin admires Craig Nash’s Corvette Limited saloon at the Dargaville Speedway on Anniversary weekend. The eleven-year-old has been attending Speedway since he was a toddler with his family who have been involved with the sport for 50 years and are life members of the Kaikohe club. Despite his young age, he lives for the sport and commentates the races over the microphone when necessary. He says his goal is to one day have his own race car and he already knows the track talk and rules.

The Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall established in 1952 is the home of Kaiwaka Community Movies and is run by a group of local volunteers.

‘Without Volunteers, there is no fire service,’ is the message the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade is sending to the community in the build up to their open day.

“The community were handed the hall back a few years ago by the council.

We re-invigorated it and invested in new digital equipment as we cannot get the old movies anymore.

The original carbon projector is still here,” said hall committee chair Ad Clarijs.

“We play blu ray movies onto the seven metre screen with a surround sound system and purchase the movies as soon as they are available. Dargaville senior firefighter Penny Searle says whilst the main aim of the day is recruitment, it is also about demonstrating the type of work the brigade does and raising awareness that they are solely run by volunteers.

The road into Pine Beach will be closed at 8.20am to allow for the kids’ event and will reopen at approximately 9.00am. All adult competitors will have the opportunity to rack their bikes prior to 8.20am or after 9.00am prior to the adult briefing at 9.30am.

Angela Nash in her pink, black and white Honda Prelude won the Ladies Production grade at the Finlayson Park Speedway Dargaville during the Northland Anniversary weekend races.

“We are members of the Dargaville Production Stockcar Club and my husband Craig built the car for me. We build all our own race cars,” said Angela.

“This is a new vehicle this season and it was my second meet with it. It is a 2.2 litre VTEC and really good to drive. Craig drives the Corvette Limited saloon.“ “I had three races on Saturday and three races Sunday and I took out five of the six. We both compete and my father races too. The club has been racing at that site since 1977.

“I love the adrenalin of being on the track with others. It’s not about the competitiveness for me — it’s about the fun of the day.”

Angela says speedway is a family orientated sport.

“We do a lot of things with the children like going for little rides around the track. It is not an expensive sport to get into, you can join the cheaper category to start with. The club members are keen to help new members in any way they can.”

This event had approximately 30 cars from different grades racing.

“Our two day race meet was a great success thanks to the sponsors. We are just a little club which makes it more personal and we are always looking for new faces. A lot of our club travel away

for titles and competitions. “I race with the men because there are no other females at the moment unless there are visiting drivers.

“It would be great to have other females to race against. Come and have a chat at the next meet on February 21 on State Highway 14 — about 1.5 kilometres out of Dargaville heading toward Whangarei.” 

Young Brooke Healey from Paparoa is back at school after a summer of fun — Christmas, camping at the beach, having a ball.

But it was also a holiday spent in serious pursuit of a dream. Seven-year-old Brooke has written a book!

“My friend at school and I were going to put down our story. My friend took some ideas home but then nothing happened so I decided to write the story myself.”

Giving youth options  by Ann Morgan

Under the guidance of coach Fili Maka, the Wellsford Boxing Sport and Fitness Club has been established for more than five years.

Fili has been wheelchair bound for 20 years after a work accident and has been involved in boxing for more than 16 years.

“I started learning with my cousin Lolo Heimuli who is a well known boxing trainer when I took my daughter Magan to boxing when she was 10-years-old,” said Fili.

“We moved from Auckland to Tomarata when I wanted to find a place to live with a  Wellsford Boxing Sport and Fitness Club members holiday atmosphere.

Despite its male dominated membership, the Ruawai Motorcycle Club are sparing a thought for the women in their lives with a ‘Lady Luck’ ride which raised money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation during Northland Anniversary weekend.

Committee member Phil Astley says the family orientated club have seen close friends and family battle breast cancer and believe that every little bit helps.

“Everybody has some connection with breast cancer. We all have a mum or aunty, wife or nana who as been through it.”

An unwelcomed embellishment has appeared on the Te Roroa Learning Assistance building in Dargaville over Anniversary weekend and the spray painted letters have been the cause of much discussion amongst staff.

Manager Janet Te Rore says she would like anyone who is familiar with the lettering to come forward and shed some light on what she says is part of a culture that not only needs to be represented and understood in the town but also needs to be given an appropriate place to be expressed.

“We are very disappointed that it has happened but it has highlighted that there are many different types of literacy and tagging is one of them,” says Janet.

Te Roroa Learning Assistance employ the concept of ‘ako’ which is a reciprocal learning strategy that sees students share knowledge with their tutors and vice versa.

“We want to know what the graffiti means as it is a form of literacy that

reflects a particular culture in our youth.

Many of us are not part of that youth culture and don’t understand it.”

She suggests spaces could be made available for people to express this type of literacy leading to a form of street art which could brighten up specific areas within the town.

“Some people might find that mainstream literacy stifles their creativity. This incident has started us thinking about how we can explore and combine this form in a literacy programme at Te Roroa. Maybe we need to allow people to have a space to express this cultural type of literacy.

“We want to help our youth embrace their culture in a positive way and enable them to channel it correctly.” 

There’s a new set of helping hands in town as Kaipara Physiotherapy expand their reach, opening a new practice in the region’s ‘Village in the Valley’.

With an ageing population, and an influx of new residents keen to swap the big city for the good life in the country, one of the key motivators to settle in Paparoa is sterling medical support. Physiotherapist Lynne Butterworth is there to add a new aspect to medical care in the mid-Kaipara, having already established a fine reputation with patients and clients in Maungaturoto.

It’s official — New Zealand’s population is getting older. But, as the World Health Organisation say in a recent report, people over the age of 65 in the modern world will expect a better quality of life — and a longer retirement — than any previous generation.

Our own Ministry of Social Development agree, saying that baby boomers will be healthier, better educated and have more spending power than any other generation reaching 65 in New Zealand’s history. Presented by the Kaiwaka Sports Association, the sixth annual Top of the Rock family fun day multi-sport event will be hosted by TV3’s Brendon ‘Money Man’ Johnson and will be held this Sunday, February 14.

“The event caters for mountain bikers, runners and walkers including both recreational and competitive sports people of all ages,” said organiser Cheryl Anderson.

“Some of Kaiwaka’s most scenic countryside — bush, lakes and farmland are enroute and you get the opportunity to climb the iconic Bald Rock Mountain.

There is a well formed track which spirals around the mountain which is easier to climb than the daunting view from the road suggests.”

There is no time limit for completing the event so competitors do not need to be concerned about their fitness level.

“We will have marshals in vehicles following the participants who will give those who need it a ride back to base if they are unable to complete the course,” says Cheryl.

A variety of different options are available for the course: the five or 10 kilometre walk or run; the 10 kilometre run plus 15 kilometre mountain bike ride; 14 or 30 kilometre mountain bike route, and this year we have a fun bike course for the under 10-year-olds. “We had more than 350 participants at

“My son and I have been following the different shows across the country and our Lions Club needed to raise money for our local St John to help with their building fund last year. Initially we thought we might get 20–40 trucks but it went way beyond our wildest dreams,” co-organiser Bruce Wilson.

“We raised around $10,000 for the Wellsford St John Ambulance. It was an awesome day last year for our first event with 850–1,000 people attending with 98 trucks and 40 classic cars, pick ups and hot rod vehicles on display. Some trucks came from as far as Matamata and Whangarei. It was a

great turnout with lots of support from the industry sponsors.

“There is a lot on offer again this year too, and we will again have the Lions Club food tent offering our famous mussel fritters, and live music with lots of different things going on.”

There is a variety of current and classic trucks from tippers, to long liners, milk tankers and stock trucks, classic cars and pick ups as well.

The Lions Club have been involved in many fundraising events including selling corn and firewood and helping with lots of shows and school events. “We put our hand up to help the community

A disaster in the making?

Into the second month of 2016 and we continue to see the global slide in dairy auction prices. Whole milk powder has dropped 10.4 per cent in the last three auctions, down to US$1,952 per tonne. This has been compounded by AMF hydrous milk fat dipping a steep 6.4 per cent to US$3,486 per tonne.

Fonterra’s monthly advance payment of $3.15 with the season finishing on May 31, means that a 25 per cent sharemilker is faced with an income of just 78 cents per kilo of milk solids. And that is disastrous.

On a wider scale we could now be seeing a major change in world trading power with oil dropping further and further per barrel. The price of diesel in New Zealand is now down to levels not seen for many years.

We see China forging new trade partnerships with Iran, with both countries agreeing to build a new railway link between them, restoring for trade the legendary Silk Route of history.

China is cooperating with Iran on nuclear energy and investing in new nuclear plants in the UK. China has also signed more than a dozen trade agreements with Iran and economic commentators predict that Iran will work and trade with independent

countries. This could suit New Zealand.

While America and Europe are continuing with their trade embargoes against Russia and while Europe is plagued with migrant problems, Russia and China are cooperating quietly, setting up trade agreements with not only the middle eastern countries, but Africa as well.

I believe we are seeing a major shift with many countries seeking to avoid western bloc meddling in their affairs.

The Gulf States are seeking strategic relations with Russia and China.

Russia claims a 4% annual growth in agriculture production.

Russia and China are carrying out large joint ventures such as construction of huge dairy farms. China’s underlying strategy is that cooperation is the only way to find peace.

New Zealand’s fortunes may also gain from this new trade thinking.

On a wider horizon, New Zealand’s exports may also depend on the outcome
