Visitor nights spent in the Kaipara rose by a whopping 109.6% last December compared with the same month the year before, with the trend expected to continue. “Tourism New Zealand’s ongoing international marketing is creating high awareness of holidaying in New Zealand and increasing demand and arrivals from overseas,” said Northland Inc CEO, David Wilson. “The combination of a buoyant New Zealand economy and a higher profile for Northland are both having an impact.” The figures were collated by Statistics New Zealand. “The summer season so far has been particularly good for all of Northland and Kaipara also enjoyed the benefits of increased guest nights spent in

the region. The summer upswing has capped off a very good year for the visitor sector in Northland, and we expect this buoyancy to continue throughout 2015.” There were an additional 10,435 visitor nights spent in the Kaipara district in this past December — a total of 20,195 nights compared to 9,760 in the previous December. For the full year, Kaipara recorded an increase of 31.9 per cent, or 133,575 visitor nights in 2014, compared to 101,233 nights in 2013. This was double the figure recorded by Whangarei. Mangawhai Heads Holiday park has definitely noticed an increase in business over the summer. “It has a lot to do with the weather,” said operator Richard Gunson. “We are currently running at a rate of about ten

per cent international tourists, though internationals tend to come in March with more New Zealanders taking their holidays over January and February. “Visitors have either been along the Kauri Coast or are heading that way when they stay with us. “Many are on their way to or from the Bay of Islands via the Twin Coast Discovery route.” “The increase in tourists to the region benefits everyone, from restaurants, petrol stations to small tourism operators, their spending is widely spread,” he says. The CEO of the Kauri Museum, Lisa Tolich noted the attraction experiences daily visitors, but said “December was positive and we are cautiously optimistic” over visitor trends. 
