Brandon Yelavich arrived at Pouto last week on the first leg of a cross-country journey estimated to be around 7,500 kilometres as the crow flies. The route will take him down the west coast to Stewart Island, returning via the east coast, and he intends to avoid all roads entirely. “Just beaches and farmland and bush and water,” he says. On his way south he built a makeshift raft to cross the Whangape harbour, but from Pouto he set off by boat to South Head. “It’s the first time in New Zealand such a circumnavigation has been attempted,” he says. And to make it even more arduous Brandon is living off the land and the sea as much as possible. “I’ve been eating wild plants, lots of fish, and a bit of possum and rabbit.” He camps in the open when necessary, but will also accept offers of food, sleeping places and continued on page 2… water transport.

At 82, Trevor Brljevich from Maungaturoto was the oldest participant at the Top of the Rock multi-sports event at Kaiwaka and says he doesn’t feel any different from when he was in his 60s.
