p Club commodore Kelly Hansen says 24 launches and four runabouts took part in the event, sailing a circular course from the clubrooms to the band rotunda, then to the bridge and back to the boating club. “There were all sorts of shapes and sizes of craft,” says Mr Hansen. “The weather was perfect — we couldn’t have asked for anything better.” The regatta was open to anyone and attracted vessels from the Kaipara Cruising Club and the Pahi Boating Club, while planes from the Dargaville Aero Club did a flyover. The event was followed by dinner and a live band. Mr Hansen says the regatta was a big success and will be run again next year.

Organiser Kim Jones says snorkelling proved especially popular, with people coming from Auckland and Whangarei to try it out. Learn-to ski-classes were also in high demand, while the Northland Regional Council had displays on pest plants and weeds which encouraged people to be active in protecting the lakes from environmental threats. The event is likely to be repeated in 2015.

A late change of ownership has saved Dargaville’s BP service station from closing down.

Dargaville’s volunteer fire brigade has added more tools to its firefighting arsenal.

After 50 years of trading, the station on Victoria St was set to close after owner Michael Collins decided the $600,000 cost of upgrading his old tanks was more than he could afford.

Mr Collins said he was not willing to go into debt for 10 years to pay his share.

BP had told him they were not willing to continue supplying the station unless the work was done.

The station had been set to close on February 23. However, late last week Mr Collins was told it had been bought by a

new operator who would continue trading in the meantime, but wait until winter to upgrade and the business would close for around three months while the work was carried out. Mr Collins will hand over next Monday.

The service station includes a workshop, an AA agency and a drivers’ licence agency. The workshop closed on Friday. Mr Collins says the new owner is keen to retain the agencies, but decisions on their future will be up to the AA. ¢

Thanks to a $26,000 grant from Pub Charities and the Lion Foundation it has bought a thermalimaging camera and three portable LED lights. Deputy chief fire officer Michael Ross says the LED lights are battery powered and can be set up to illuminate fire scenes at night.

Local family adopts a room for families in need u by Joanne Speechly

The Adopt a Room peer to peer fundraising initiative is the first of its kind in New Zealand and Ronald McDonald House Auckland (RMHA) is excited to be taking ownership of it.

Dargaville’s Erica Tebbutt, who is the only Northlander participating in this unique fundraiser, is all too familiar with stays at RMHA, as her son Joseph requires ongoing specialist medical treatment at Starship Hospital.

“Joseph has a multitude of congenital issues that will be with him for the rest of his life,” says Erica.

“Some families might have a stint at hospital, we have a life at hospital. I’m a solo parent and I also have Joseph’s twin

sister Sophia to care for, so everyday life is demanding.

“I could not afford accommodation in Auckland for prolonged periods of time and Ronald McDonald House is not only beautiful, it gives us an escape from the hospital and all that goes along with it.”

Each year, there are many families who stay at RMHA as their child needs specialist care and Northland families account for 14 per cent of the total

It’s an event 21 years in the making — though the Tractor Pull at Northland’s Field Days hardly needs a cake with candles for its coming of age.

There has been little difference in water consumption during the first week of water restrictions in Dargaville and Kaipara District Council is urging residents to look at ways they can reduce their usage.

The high-powered sport, which originated in the American Midwest, has always been an arena for big boys and their toys, showing the skills it takes to tame the biggest farming machines.

Totalspan Alley will roar with the sounds of tractors packing up to 180 horsepower, carefully adjusted to tow the dreaded ‘sledge’, a contraption weighted down with heavy concrete and steel.

Drivers must use their knowledge and experience to select a host of factors, such as draw bar height, gear ratio, engine RPM and tyre pressure to ensure the perfect pull. Gas and Tyre Services will have a fleet truck on hand to help with the calibration of those monster ag tyres.

It’s not just bragging rights which the farm-machine elite compete for, either. There’s a generous prize pool on offer for those who can master the sledge, including one which is likely to be well received after a hot day of tractor driving — a bar fridge donated by Beko appliances and McKay Electrical.

The total potential prize pool is valued in the thousands of dollars!

For the crowds, however, it’s all about the spectacle of huge machines pushing the limits of torque and power. Can last year’s champion Shane Phillips hold on to top spot? Or will he be toppled by last year’s runners-up Debbie Martin or Steven Hansen? Only a gruelling test of mind, metal and motorised muscle will decide! ¢

The council implemented a ban on hoses and sprinklers last week after a dry summer that has seen the area receive only half of its normal rain over the last four months.

Last year when we asked the community to save water with their help we achieved an average of 3,300 cubic metres a day and there were days when usage got down to as low as 3,000 cubic metres.

Mr Dissanyake says the council’s website (www. kaipara.govt.nz) contains some useful water saving tips.

These include: • Fix dripping taps. You can save up to 100 litres a day (that’s up to 36,500 litres of water a year) just by replacing a worn washer.

• Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full.

Network News Great progress on Network maintenance A huge amount of work is underway on Northpower’s subtransmission lines throughout Kaipara and Whangarei Districts.

Three crews are undertaking the maintenance (changing power poles, cross-arms and insulators) and this will be completed by the end of March.

We are also concentrating on our automation project which means we can turn areas of power on and off (for maintenance purposes), while also being able to shift feeds of power to different areas – all from the Northpower Control Centre in Whangarei. This saves time, as crews no longer need to drive to remote locations to do this work.

Our Maungaturoto crews are focussed on maintenance work and ‘re-conductoring’ work in and around Tinopai and they are a matter of weeks away from completion.

A number of our Maungaturoto and Dargaville lines crews have been sent to Auckland to assist with some ongoing projects for Vector.

Maunu is also an area of major focus right now due to the layout changes at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 14. Our crews are removing poles and overhead lines to underground the power supply – covering many hundreds of metres.

This has been underway for three months and will continue until early April.

We appreciate the way local residents, pedestrians, motorists, land nearby businesses have worked with us through this time. It has made our job a lot easier.

Customer generated work continues to increase through a surge in applications for new power connections – particularly in Kaipara.

There’ll be gun toting shootout action in Waimamaku next weekend as Wild West fans descend on the small settlement just north of Waipoua Forest.

Active Attitude is all about having fun and creating positive attitudes towards physical activity, while developing important fundamental movement skills.

The mobile gym travels to Dargaville each week with classes for children aged two to 13 years.

For the last decade Waimamaku has been the scene of a Wild West Fest, incorporating shoot outs and robberies — all in the best of fun. Now it’s almost time for the 2014 edition.

Organiser Bruce Lomas, who also runs the town’s Four Square store, says the event started up about 12 years ago to rival the Hokianga Wild Food Festival. But it soon took off in a Wild West direction.

Members of the Cowboy Action Shooting Club in Kaikohe and the South Hokianga Riders will arrive in town to stop traffic on State Highway 12 and collect money for Hokianga Hospital.

Shots (all blanks) will be fired and there will be ‘armed holdups’ at each end of the valley and a Wild West show. The shoot outs will use real guns. But Mr Lomas says they will only fire blanks and will be checked prior to the show.

The local hall will be opened up for community groups to have displays and stalls to promote their activities and raise money. Food will also be available and sideshows will keep people entertained in the lead up to the big action.

He says last year’s Wild West Fest raised $1,000 for Hokianga Hospital. Another collection will take place this year.

If you want to see the action, be at Waimamaku at 1pm on Saturday 22 February and enjoy the fun.

Active Attitude’s founder and head coach Ashleigh McCaw has been coaching gymnastics since the age of 14 and moved back to Whangarei in 2012 to set up her business.

“I went to Hamilton to study and gain some experience in the sports industry but I always wanted to come back up North, where there is quite a demand.

I grew up in the country so if there had been something like this handier to where I lived, I would have been able to get started in the sport earlier.

“I think more people are catching on to how beneficial gymnastics is for kids — it’s that ultimate foundation sport.

The parents in Dargaville have been really supportive and helpful and a lot of the kids who we started out with, have stuck with us.”

Active Attitude classes include PlayGym for two to five year olds, mixed boys and girls beginner and advanced gymnastics classes for five to eight year olds and separate boys and girls classes for eight to 13 year olds, also catering to both beginner and advanced levels.

Epilepsy New Zealand will be holding a number of seminars and support group meetings in the Kaipara this year, providing an opportunity for people to gain a better understanding of the condition.

“I often find that although people think they know what epilepsy is, they really don’t, so this is about promoting awareness,” says epilepsy information and support specialist, Margaret Dunn.

The seminars cover what epilepsy is, what causes it, recognition of seizure types, first aid for seizures, seizure triggers, recording seizures, principles of anti-epileptic medication and lifestyle issues.

“If a workplace would prefer an in house talk about epilepsy, I am happy to arrange something at a time and venue that suits you,” says Margaret.

The epilepsy support groups provide an

opportunity for people to meet others living with epilepsy and Margaret will be available to provide information and support.

Seminars and support groups will be held in Dargaville, Maungaturoto and Mangawhai throughout the year. The first seminar will be held in Dargaville at the Community Health Services building on Thursday, February 20, from 10am to 12pm, followed by a support group from 12 to 1pm.

The first Maungaturoto seminar and group will be held on March 20 and there will be an Understanding Epilepsy seminar in Mangawhai on May 28. ¢

The fifteenth Mangawhai Walking Weekend is set for March 28th to 30th and the variety of walks and entertainment on offer are already proving popular if the early registrations are anything to go by.

The curtain goes up and the lights go down in preparation for an evening of magical thrills this Friday, as Dargaville welcomes two of New Zealand’s most talented young magicians to the stage.

There are 32 walks over the three days, catering to all levels of fitness and covering a variety of terrain. The newest walk has attracted the greatest number of entries to date and will now have two departure times on both Saturday and Sunday. Built over an old 1890s paper road through DOC land, the track follows regenerated bush along a stream, passing waterfalls on its way towards the Brynderwyn ridge line.

The Mangawhai Cliff Top walk is described as one of the best coastal walks in New Zealand and the well known, well trodden track has to be seen to be believed.

Farms, history, geology and beaches will all be explored on the guided walks and keen photographers can participate in a sunrise get together on the beach with the weekend’s photography guide.

The increasing range of locally grown produce will be reflected in the food available at the annual Food and Wine Festival on Saturday afternoon, where it is anticipated that the dancing will be as vigorous as ever with the Mermaids performing.

With the extensive variety of guided walks through public and private land there will be something to suit everyone. Mangawhai is set to greet the 600 walkers and another 300 for the Food and Wine Festival so come along and celebrate the end of another great summer.

“It has been a challenge trying to match actors with the characters but I’ve been really thrilled with the cast — they’re brilliant. We also want the right balance of humour, so that the play is funny and risque but not too rude.

Whilst having affairs with both of his waitresses, he is also trying to keep his wife happy, trying to please the German soldiers who frequent his café and he’s also running a major underground operation for the Resistance.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic!

The second Annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic on Sunday was a great success. Organised by the Maungaturoto Residents Association, the fun family day was extremely well attended.

“The Maungaturoto Fire Brigade allowed the children to wear fire helmets, inspect the new truck and also to have rides — complete with the siren,” said committee member, Imogen McLeod.

“Kaipara Plunket attended with their thought provoking driver awareness programme, Otamatea Community Services gave away hand knitted teddy bears and there was an activity centre sponsored by Paparoa and Maungaturoto play centres.”

Fonterra Grassroots Fund provided an under fives bouncy castle and a bubble machine and gave free milk and apples to children who took part in the storytime, with Sharlene Dormer and Nona Rogers. Over 70 children completed the scavenger hunt and received a hand-size beanbag as their reward.

To make things just that little bit more challenging for vehicle designers, farmers are not satisfied these days with bare bones, spartan utility. For a farm vehicle to truly shine — and especially in the hard-fought utility segment — it must be apt for feeding out, fencing, and also taking the kids to the bus stop or taking the family on a shopping trip to the big smoke.

Kaiwaka Sports Association’s fourth annual Top of the Rock fundraiser was held on Sunday, February 9, attracting over 300 entries. Participants could select from a scenic five or 10 kilometre walk or run or a 10 kilometre cross country run and 15 kilometre mountain bike ride combo. The slightly overcast start to the day provided ideal conditions for the steady climb to the top of Baldrock Mountain.

When the Otamatea Community Services opened their training premises in Maungaturoto, they collaborated with the Te Roroa Learning Assistance service in Dargaville to provide computer tuition in the Eastern Kaipara.

“We have had students from Kaipara, Mangawhai, Maungaturoto, and Paparoa,” says Denise Meiklejohn from the OCS. For several years I had dreamed of being able to establish

computer training locally, and when the building next door to the agency became available we were supported by many in the community who shared the vision.

“Noel and Stephen Smith set up all the computers, giving not only their time and expertise, but also gifting additional equipment. When the students came on stage to receive their certificates I was so proud of them, I know how hard they have worked to gain these new skills.” ¢

Applications for financial assistance from the Sport New Zealand Rural Travel Fund are now being called for.

A total of approximately $12,000 is available for distribution for winter sports.

The Rural Travel Fund is designed to help subsidise travel for junior teams (5 to 19 year olds) participating in their local competition.

Applicants should be resident in the Kaipara District Council area.

This is an ideal opportunity for winter sports codes to get a share of this funding.
