Two Kaipara-linked businesses have been awarded, with Flax and Fibre from Tangowāhine receiving the Northchamber Judge’s Choice Award and the Creative Northland Excellence in Creative Industries Award. Matakohe Architecture and Urbanism, one of the creative forces behind the ongoing Dargaville Racing Club development, received the Henderson Reeves Excellence in Business — Small Business Award. “Flax and Fibre is using harakeke for weaving and building on Māori traditional techniques to develop contemporary artworks. We are confident there is an exciting, thriving, long term future for Flax and Fibre,” said the judges in the creative industries category. “It’s humbling,” says Flax and Fibre’s Heather Carrigan. “I feel completely overwhelmed by the support I’ve received after the win. “My business is carried by the aroha and awhi of my community, and I am very grateful to my mentors and kaiako; Veranoa Hetet and Whāea Katie Tito whom our Pā Harakeke ‘Ngā Kōrari O Keita’ is named after. I greatly value their ongoing direction and blessing.“ The panel, who voted in anonymity, also praised the entrepreneurial skills of Flax and Fibre’s Heather as they conferred their own select award on her business, which was also runner-up in the people’s choice and microbusiness categories. The judges in the small business award category described Matakohe Architecture and Urbanism as a ‘refreshingly unique business in terms of its core offering and
