Two Kaipara-linked businesses have been awarded, with Flax and Fibre from Tangowāhine receiving the Northchamber Judge’s Choice Award and the Creative Northland Excellence in Creative Industries Award. Matakohe Architecture and Urbanism, one of the creative forces behind the ongoing Dargaville Racing Club development, received the Henderson Reeves Excellence in Business — Small Business Award.

p Dargaville Heritage Machinery Club has a new project in the garage, receiving some care and attention after a century of tilling the soil. This Fordson tractor, fitted with a Howard rotary harrow, was built just after the end of the first world war. It will be restored mechanically, but the authentic patina of age will be left intact to reflect its many years on the farm before it becomes part of the machinery’ club’s historical collection.

The million-dollar project led by Northland Inc will run for two years. A major redevelopment project is underway again at The Kauri Museum at Matakohe, after building work delays, including Covid restrictions, during last year.

Covid Omicron case numbers are increasing across New Zealand and in other parts of Northland but not in Kaipara District. At time of writing this there are no active cases in Kaipara, though there is a positive wastewater test in Mangawhai, a lead indicator. People need to be prepared for a rapid change in the story. I encourage people to continue taking up the vaccination and booster options, getting tested if feeling unwell, scanning into businesses, wearing masks, maintaining social distances of at least 1m and regularly washing hands. Prevention is better than cure.

Rural subdivision rules and urban density rules.

Considering the current level of Kaipara District covid cases (currently zero) Council proposes to meet in person for the District Plan Review Briefing on 16 February and also the Council Meeting on 23 February. Our preference is to meet in person, while taking a precautionary approach under the Red Traffic Light rules, to get best efficiency and effective decision-making from elected members.

While there are limited active Covid cases in the community, we want to make big progress on the large work programme ahead of Council, knowing that when Omicron is virulent in the community it will not be possible to meet together safely.

And at that point it may be months where Council will be meeting online only rather than in person. Meetings are broadcast live on YouTube whether in person or online. In the next few months we’ll be working on subjects that are demanding and I want the best from our Council as we proceed. Some of the interesting content in the District Plan Review includes: •

The Dargaville Museum is preparing a time-warp to the decade of rock ‘n’ roll, as a special exhibition on the 1950s takes shape, opening in late February.

We all want to get right our Draft District Plan, and it is key to progressing our future here.

In other progress on Kaipara roads, Season Two of the Unsealed Road PGF projects is completed. Waipoua River Road sealing project is right on track, Kaiwaka Footbridges are too. For the Mangawhai Shared Path project we’re awaiting confirmation from Waka Kotahi of their funding contribution for Stage Two. And for Pouto Road sealing project Council is looking to fix a recent $487,000 funding project shortfall by using Retained Earnings from last year’s financial surplus so there will be no impact on rates for next year. The regrettable situation we’re in is not ideal but Council looks to complete the project with these funds rather than using 10km worth of heavy road metalling budget or stopping the $6,550,000 project. In these inflationary times Council is not immune from cost increases to these significant capital projects, just the same as for anyone who’s trying to build a house or even fill a car with petrol. We’re all living and working with new challenges.

“Those who had the pleasure of living through those times will remember the small things that tell a story,” says museum spokesperson and co-curator of the exhibit, Lyn Trounson.

“Those who did not may still recall some of these items, as they built things to last back then,” she added. Lyn referred to the many commonplace yet iconic homewares and brand-named products that have been prepared for display.

The exhibit will feature segments on home life, work, school, sports and the technology of the 1950s, but the overarching theme is about how Dargaville folk lived in those days. Lyn says that everything from school books to marching band uniforms will be on show to evoke memories. There will also be a memory wall as part of the display.

An interactive space where people can write down their own recollections of what was a tumultuous decade, but where the post-war dream saw New Zealand leaving Britain’s shadow and looking to the future.

“It’s the time when people of my generation need to start telling their stories, or they will be lost forever,” says Lyn. “The 1950s was a time of dance halls and picture shows, late-night Friday shopping, sports on Saturday and a more simple world.”

Museum staff are currently assembling the exhibition from many archival photos, news items, artefacts, books and loans from the public. It is expected to open next week and run through until Easter and beyond. ¢

Dargaville’s Muddy Waters Gallery hosted a special exhibition opening this Waitangi Day, showcasing the creativity of ten local artists, with a theme of celebration for Te Tiriti.

Dignitaries, including representatives of local iwi, the Dargaville Arts Association and the Kaipara District Council, met on February 6 to formally open the exhibition, which will run until February 18, free to the public.

A $3 million-plus tender has been let to replace the Northland Regional Council’s main workboat, the Waikare, with the new vessel to continue servicing the Kaipara Harbour and wider Northland waters.

Work on the new 1 7. 5 - m e t re ve s s el , informally dubbed Waikare 2, begins in July to replace its almost 20-year-old namesake, the 16-metre Waikare, which has served since its launch in 2003.

NRC regional harbourmaster Jim Lyle says the new multipurpose vessel will be used to carry out maintenance on the council’s buoys and beacons, for oil spill response and attending incidents such as wrecks and sinking vessels.

It’s also designed to act as a pilot vessel for the Bay of Islands, which at the moment is limited p Jim Lyle — NRC regional harbourmaster to superyachts, although cruise ships are expected to return at to the hull design and layout.

Baylys Beach walkway closure The walkway between 35 Seaview Drive and 31 Sunset Drive in Baylys Beach remains closed due to a slip and should not be accessed under any circumstances. There is a risk of the walkway collapsing, causing injury to walkway users.

Kaiwaka footbridges update The truss is now up on the abutments at the north bridge, with construction of the boardwalk starting last week. The north bridge and boardwalk should be completed this week.

Contractor, Bridge It NZ, has advised that machinery has been moved to the south bridge and installation of abutments are scheduled to be completed this week. Bridge It NZ is looking to land the completed south bridge into position on the week of 21 February 2022.

This work is supported by the government’s Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit, with funding from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Our team is working on temporary repairs for the immediate future, as well as a long-term solution. The long-term solution will go through a community consultation process later this year.

Irrigation feeds diverse crops

Maungaturoto watermain works Work is progressing on the watermain renewals along Hurndall Street East and View Street, Maungaturoto. Our team and United Civil Construction contractors are replacing 700 metres of watermains, with completion planned for late March.

We are coordinating visits for interested landowners and farmers to our two Kaipara Water demonstration sites. Set for later this month, the visits are an opportunity for anyone wanting to view a practical working example of irrigation techniques for high-value crops in Kaipara. Roading slows as heat continues The Unsealed Road Improvement Project remains on track to approved project milestones, with 84.4 km’s of the network’s road pavement layering completed to date.

However, the pace of these works and general roading maintenance will slow due to dry conditions.

Roading crews will remain established, and contractors will continue to work closely with the Northland Regional Council regarding water use over the summer period, but roading will not ramp up again for a few months yet.

Two test sites established to prove the case for irrigation and crop growth in west Kaipara are growing green despite the hot summer weather, delivering positive news for the future of local farming.

Last week, Ruawai College started school with a new curriculum, changing the way students choose their learning path and how skills are taught.

The two sites, at Te Kōpuru and Maunganui Bluff, were established in November as part of Kaipara KickStart. It is led by the Kaipara District Council and supported by the government’s Kānoa — Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit, with funding from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Te Kōpuru locals voiced concerns about the abnormal function of the town’s wastewater treatment system last week, with video surfacing of what appeared to be leakage into Makaka Creek.

The video, posted on social media, came just ahead of Kaipara District Council action to assess and repair the system, which serves the village of approximately 200 dwellings.

Phone calls and correspondence to this publication also highlighted public concern over the potential health and environmental fallout of a major breakage. The council made a report on their call-out to the site this week.

The Taharoa Domain Committee, which oversees the Kai Iwi Lakes, has received a comprehensive report on the 2021 to 2022 holiday period, revealing a successful season despite restrictions.

A total of 4,413 people stayed at the popular holiday campgrounds this summer, not counting January numbers. It rivals the population of Dargaville and is down only slightly on the recordbreaking 2020 to 2021 season, mainly due to distancing rules and Covid passport regulations.

Grey Power Dargaville is back in session, as the organisation for the advancement of 50-year-olds and older embarks on a busy 2022 with an accolade for a longserving member.

“June Klenner was president of Grey Power’s Kaipara association for 18 consecutive years,” says current president Stewart Quirk.

“During that time, her leadership fostered a personal concern among members for the welfare of the elderly.”

This week, Grey Power members honoured June’s dedication with a long service award, and a specially made badge in the shape of the owl, a symbol of Grey Power, crafted in silver by local artist Jenny Crundwell. This tribute is endorsed

by New Zealand Grey Power president Jan Pentecost.

With local body elections looming, discussions at the group’s town hall meetings will be keenly watched by citizens of all ages. However, there’s more to Grey Power than activism in politics, despite the fact that the roots of the movement go back to a time when superannuitants were a marginalised group politically.

In 1986, the government of the day wanted to impose a surcharge on national

super, and a group of angry older citizens banded together to bring their fight to the public. After winning this battle, they remained active in the space of senior’s rights and healthcare, changing their name to Grey Power to increase their profile. That certainly worked; from a core of less than 100 in 1986, Grey Power has grown to a strength of 90,000 members across New Zealand.

Along the way, Grey Power has been a strong advocate for all manner of issues, and not just for older Kiwis. While they have had notable successes in instigating the Gold Card discount scheme, lowering doctor’s bills and pharmacy fees, rolling back asset testing, implementing winter energy payments, bolstering superannuation and spot-auditing rest homes, it was also Grey Power who helped remove the interest on student loans. Better outcomes across all of society have come from their activism and focus.

Though apolitical in charter, Dargaville Grey Power is the host of many open

discussions with political candidates, and these debates, panels and question times provide a valuable link to the democratic process.

Perhaps most importantly, Grey Power in Dargaville is a place where friendships have been made, alongside the important work of advocacy.

Technology shows advancement in many industries, and hearing impairment has been benefitting from these new ideas.

Seniors can be tech-savvy, too; you can amplify your conversations or mute nuisance with a tap of a screen or hearing aid. Wouldn’t it be grand to silence a conversation momentarily?

You can do it without being vocal about it, too, without causing offence. It may be difficult at times to adjust to the change, but think of the advantages.

You have more options and control with the advancement in hearing aid technology.

Smartphone apps or physical prompts give you power over what you hear in your surroundings.

You can turn down that child outside the supermarket blasting his opinion of good music. When you’re at a family function, you can focus your hearing aid on who you’re conversing with.

Technology allows for that these days. Younger generations have smartwatches; the older

generation has hearing aids with the capabilities of what a smartwatch monitors. It is an integration of having a speaker in your ear that can measure vital signs too. Starkey Hearing Technology’s Livio AI can follow physical and cognitive activity and even translate a total of 27 languages. It is practical. While younger people have a band on their arm as a trend, more experienced generations can use this information to track health concerns and improve their quality of life.

Other areas of technology are benefitting the hearing aid industry. Bluetooth LE 5.2 is an improvement introduced in 2020.

This update enables hearing aids to use less power, decreased sound delay, better sound quality and faster connectivity.

It is already common to have Bluetooth in these hearing

devices. The enhancement has increased quality and improved the relationship we have with phones, radios and televisions.

Companies are adapting to new issues that this pandemic has caused. Signia has features like Mask Mode that enables more audible sound when someone is talking through a face mask. Alternatively, you could use it to catch out your surly teenage grandchild when they are mumbling words under their breath. Youngsters can get away with a lot these days, don’t they?

Insurance companies, police and emergency services all keep statistics on road safety. They have found that there are a few common and easy tricks to making your vehicle safer, even on unpredictable country roads.

The price of fuel has been taxing kiwi pockets recently, and we need to keep in mind ideas on how to make the tank last.

With inflation increasing to 5.9%, the cost of fuel and essential items have become more expensive. Luckily there are ways to help decrease the usage of fuel that doesn’t require purchasing a new hybrid or electric vehicle.

Many petrol stations offer discount cards. If you don’t want to pay the full price — take advantage of this. Most major supermarkets supply fuel discounts with their receipts. You’ll have noticed the difference in prices when driving down the main streets. It will be apparent where the best deals are. Be mindful too. You don’t want to travel half an hour across town to save a few cents when you’ve used as many or more getting there.

General maintenance is an important factor, plus it’s good for your car. Check tyre pressure, engine oil, transmission, washer and brake fluid. Keep on top of these small tasks and try not to overfill your engine oil unless you want the seals to leak.
