Makeover for museum

Television show Heritage Rescue spent last week helping revitalise Dargaville Museum.

Dargaville High school’s new principal Michael Houghton was welcomed with a powhiri last Tuesday.

The show series targets museums full of rich stories and focusses on the hidden treasures that need to be on display.

Director and producer of the show, Laurie Clarke from Top Shelf Productions said that sometimes museums lacked focus in terms of finding their speciality area.

Along with a team of experts Laurie hoped to make improvements in the main museum front entrance, shop and reception area.

“Everyone is willing to pitch in and help, it produces an enthusiasm in the community so they in turn are more familiar with the local history,” he said.

On Sunday the public and volunteers of the museum were treated to the big reveal of the production company and volunteers hard work.

Museum Manager Andrea Hemmins said the museum was happy with the new entrance and grateful for the support the crew provided during the intense days of filming.

“We are so thankful for the volunteers’ contribution before and after the process, they really stepped up during this time of high pressure.”

Although the busy time frame meant invites were sent out at late notice, it was a great turn out from the community, community leaders and iwi.

Andrea said the museum acknowledges those who dedicated themselves to the museum in the past and sees this as an opportunity to build on their fantastic work for the future.

Mr Houghton said how it will be a “privilege and an honor to serve you and I will give 150%” in his speech.

He later described the powhiri as “quite emotional at a couple of points because a number of my old school staff and students came up and handed me over. It was a really nice introduction to the school.”

Mr Houghton said his first week has “gone well, and gone very quickly.

I’ve spent the last couple of days wandering around the school getting to know some of the students and teachers, and getting my head around the school. I am looking forward to the opportunity to get Dargaville high school back on the map.” He’s also been “having a look at what the school

is doing really well and what are some of the areas that we could improve on.”

After taking a while to acclimatise to the Kaipara heat, he and his family “are settling in really well.

“We’ve got two children who are at this school, who started this week, and three others that are around the country.”

As well as being a bigger school than his last one, Queen Elizabeth College in Palmerston North, he says that “everyone has some connection to the school, so it’s a much more connected community. I’m really looking forward to this year and working with the staff and students and getting out into the community. I think 2017 is going to be a really exciting year.” ¢

With a combination of ‘caring about the environment, the sustainable coastlines charity that I now chair, and for a personal challenge and adventure,’ Alex Asher spent this January running and swimming the length of the North island’s west coast — a distance of 1,100km.

In January 1917 Colonel Allen Bell organised a group of parliamentarians to do a motor tour of the then ‘roadless north’ to show the politicians the poor state of access and the economic potential of the region.

Due to the hot Northland sun, he ran the last 100km overnight from Ahipara to Cape Reinga. For most of the journey he had been running 42km between dawn and midday.

One of the most challenging parts was swimming the Kaipara harbour. “It was intense and quite scary — it had kept me up at night for the last nine months” he said.

“I swam with a shark shield and a boat. It took two-and-a-half hours as the tides were very difficult and at one stage I was pretty much not moving for about half an hour. That was quite full on.” Alex enjoyed his time in the Kaipara.

“It’s a beautiful area, but for so few people there is a huge amount of rubbish, more than anywhere else on the coastline.

It’s not because people don’t care — there are certainly some individuals that are causing a lot of the rubbish, but also anything that’s dropped into waterways will go out into the Kaipara harbour and get washed out by the tide and end up on a beach somewhere.”

He also enjoyed meeting people along the Kaipara beaches. “The hospitality across your coastline was just exceptional, it’s definitely something I want to extend my thanks for.” ¢

Colonel Allen Bell spent most of his adult life living in Northland and was a prominent figure in local affairs.

He also gave our region its name, as Northland use to be know as the ‘North Auckland Peninsula’.

A century later, a group of around 100 people including five politicians in 40 cars, re-enacted the tour. It lasted nine days, with a stop in Dargaville’s Harding Park on the last day.

“In 1977 we did a 60th run because someone found some old photos and they realised they were taken on the tour. It was those old photos that set the thing going,” said tour spokesman Barry Birchall.

“The tour went very well with a couple of people breaking down, but we expected that. All cars are over 100 years old.”

Meeting like-minded vintage car enthusiasts was a highlight for Barry.

“It’s the fellowship for me. We had people there from Alexandra, Nelson, Palmerston North and Australia. They come from all over and we don’t see each other very often.”

A lot of roads they travelled on didn’t exist in 1917. “The roads are quite different to the way Colonel Allen Bell saw them. There was no radio when he was around, no electricity in a lot of areas, no petrol stations and there were no hotels,” said Barry.

Along the way the cars stopped at various Northland towns attracting plenty of interest before arriving in Dargaville. ¢ Read the newspaper online

Miss Smith remained active well past her 101st birthday, and was regular sight at the museum’s open days, a walking encyclopaedia of Matakohe history.

In her biography, Child of the Kauri, Mavis recalled that in 1961, her cousin, Mervyn Sterling, suggested creating a museum, after a disastrous fire destroyed the then Matakohe community hall.

Now, from February 27 to April 2, Totara House, nestled in heritage gardens in Wharf Road, will open daily to the public between 10am and 2pm. The huge ballroom/billiard room contains unusual mottled kauri panelling selected from the sawmill the Smiths operated in Matakohe at the beginning of the 20th century.

Museum CEO Lisa Tolich says that the house, with its unique collection of

family heirlooms and stories, remains relatively untouched by time and represents a key part of Matakohe’s early European history. The summer opening will gauge visitor interest with a view to a regular ‘open season’.

“While a long-term plan articulating a sustainable future for the Heritage 2 listed building and its surrounds remains a work in progress, in the short to medium term the house needs to made more accessible to the daily visitors who travel to The Kauri Museum as well as the locals who have grown to love it,” she says.

“Just like your modern, everyday home, Totara House is a living entity and will only deteriorate with lack of use.”

Tickets are available from the museum and cost $7.50, with all proceeds going to the preservation of the house. ¢

Over 500 walkers joined in on the fun last year and organisers are hoping that this year they will have many more feet on the tracks.

Dorothy Freeman who organises the bookings said the new walks which are added each year are generally the first to book out including the Tern Walk on Saturday March 25.

“It is not just about the great variety of walks we offer, feedback from participants constantly reinforces how important knowledgeable guides are to the enjoyment of the walks,” she said.

Gordon Hosking who coordinates the walks throughout the weekend says a

debrief after each years event allows the organisers to “identify improvements which form the basis for going forward.”

Most walks have three local guides and each walk is limited to numbers.

The walks kicks off on Friday, March 24 with the Troubadour Trail around the estuary and visits performances along the way showcasing acrobats and musicians. On Saturday participants will be spoilt for choice from the 25 events available, before the annual Wine and Food festival that afternoon.

The fifth family-friendly Toka Fest music festival will take place on February 25 at the Tokatoka Tavern on SH12 with a total of 13 acts performing throughout the day to entertain the crowds.

Together they formed a team with members from Kaihoe O Ngati Rehia Trust, based in Te Tii, with Daniel Kaiawe as their coach.

The nationals had an estimated 3,300 paddlers, with 1,600 teams, from 68 clubs.

They competed in 500m and 1,500m W6 sprint races and 500m W12, placing sixth in each race.

“Daniel’s experience, knowledge and

time has not only contributed to this team being able to compete at the nationals, but these ladies have also been able to bring their teachings back to our club with plans in place to take our own team to the nationals in 2018.

The idea of crafty mammas hails all the way from Wales where Josie was living until 2015.

“I had postnatal depression and my friend and I got talking about how it was really hard to get out of the house.

“Every time you started to do something crafty the kids would want to join in and you wouldn’t be able to complete anything.”

Josie and her friend set about finding a space in a local hall where mums could meet once a month.

No craft was off limit and mums were able to complete any craft they wanted to bring along including knitting, sewing and even clay.

“The group became a place where members shared stories, laughed, talked and gave ourselves the space to be creative,” said Josie.

“What we noticed was the postnatal depression had left and an incredible support network in the group had been created.”

It helped many women to overcome feelings of isolation and depression and was an incredibly valuable resource for many.

Once she moved to Mangawhai, Josie started to miss having a designated space to be creative and formed a Facebook group to put word out.

After receiving a Kaipara Creative Community grant, the Crafty Mammas Mangawhai are ready for their first gathering of 2017 on February 18, and Josie is hoping to find some keen mums to hand the reins over to.

With a number of other commitments she is also involved with, she is on the lookout for someone to help with the promotion and organising of the group.

Crafty Mammas Mangawhai will be held 10am–3pm at the Fagan Place Senior Citizen’s Hall, Mangawhai Heads, with a koha to attend.

Trail ride for school funds

The Riverview Resthome and Village was established over twenty years ago by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust Inc (MCCT) to serve the Maungaturoto District.

Motorbike enthusiasts can get their gear ready and helmet on for the Maungaturoto Primary School Trail Ride on Sunday, February 26.

The trail ride will help raise funds for students to attend their school camp and welcomes all rider levels to participate.

Organiser Nyree Alcock says the school is “well on track to a great event.”

“This year the trail ride is fundraising for the Year 5 and 6s to attend the Peter Snell Camp in Whangaparaoa,” she said. There will be two fully supervised children’s bike tracks which includes a learner’s lap and an advanced rider loop.

Nyree has been told in the past that the children’s track set-up was the best that people had seen.

The trail ride takes part over open sheep and beef farmland with sections of bush owned by local couple Don and Jamie McKay. The day will kick off at 9am and the track will close at 3pm The children’s track is $10 — children up to 16-years-old riding on the main track is $15, and adults are $35. Nowadays, it’s hard to believe that there’s so much choice. There seems to be a machine for every conceivable niche, from off-road thrills and performance through to serious, hightorque diesel machines that do the duty of a small utility truck. Polaris, the big North American brand who really brought the side-by-side off-road configuration to Kiwi attention, have neatly filled in the whole family tree ahead of this year’s Northland Field Days, creating a template that others will surely try to follow.

Looking at it laid out on paper, it’s almost like following the DNA of a species in evolution. There at the base of the tree is the daddy — the Polaris Ranger, now available in a wild variety of flavours including a lowfat 500 model that’s affordable and stripped back, through to four-seater workhorse monsters and farm-ready diesels. Along a more predatory branch of evolution sits the RZR family, geared up for massive speed and suspension travel, a real honest to goodness Baja rally competitor. cross-bred a bit of their big Ranger into the DNA of the Sportsman, which can carry far more than you’d suppose and which comes in a high-powered variant packing 90 horsepower. Then there’s another real crossover, the Ace, with its enclosed cabin and steering wheel, but all shoehorned into the footprint of a quad. Finally, Polaris have even factored in some of what we love about full-sized utility trucks with the Ute, giving us a beefy quad with a tipping tray.

Perhaps the most intriguing vehicle on the lineup to look at this Field Days

is the General, however. Polaris have created something up near the top of the evolutionary ladder with this latest offering, combining all they’ve learned from the sensible, hard-working Ranger and the trailblazing RZR to meld into something that can work like a proper farmer all day — but then parties like a rock star with a bit of extra fizz under the hood.

The whole range will be on display this March in Dargaville, so there’s sure to be something in the Polaris bloodline that catches your eye. ¢

Field days is just around the corner, and automakers keen to gauge the mood of the public are putting the final wax and polish on a fleet of new vehicles to tempt us.

Ahead of the pack for Dargaville’s big festival of agriculture is local dealership Dargaville Ford, which goes into this year’s field days with a couple of showstoppers up their sleeve.

Not only will they lead out with a stunning red iteration of the world’s most popular sports car — the legendary Mustang, there’s also a sense of completion to the range after last year’s flurry of new models.

Ford’s SUV line-up is now complete, and this competitive section of the market is one in which the blue oval hopes to dominate, as it has done in the realm of small cars with the Fiesta ST and Focus.

Lined up together from smallest to largest, the EcoSport, Escape and Everest present the same crisp design aesthetic, but fit into very different niches. Standing with them, of course, is the machine that has made Ford proud in almost every conceivable awards race
