p Dargaville’s main street was jam-packed with the young and the slightly less young on Saturday for the town’s Christmas Parade. Organised by the Dargaville and Northern Wairoa Lions, the parade was led by a Tongan brass band from Auckland. The band was followed by a wide range of floats from schools, businesses, churches and community groups. Dargaville Scout Group won $800 for best float, with Dargaville Fire Brigade second and Arapohue School third. Further parades take place in Ruawai on Saturday (December 13) and in Maungaturoto on December 20. See more on page 9 …

Four commissioners were appointed in September 2012 to replace the elected mayor and councillors. Their appointment came in response to the controversy caused by large rates increases put in place to pay for cost over-runs on the Mangawhai EcoCare

sewerage scheme. The commissioners were appointed for a term expiring in October 2015 when they are due to be replaced by an elected mayor and council. However, Mangawhai resident Peter Nicholas was asked by former council

deputy mayor Richard Bull to draft a letter to Associate Local Government Minister Louise Upston. An attachment to the letter, which has been circulated by email, asks recipients to sign it to indicate their support. continued on page 4 …
