“Initially, 28 cameras will cover the central business district in stage one of this project, with the cost of over $60,000 financed by grants we have obtained,” said development board chair Allan Mortensen. “The cost when this was first proposed in 2009 was closer to $160,000, and the decision to install

the system now follows the success of a similar CCTV initiative in Kaitaia. It’s a shame we have to do this but if we don’t, with every other town in Northland either having CCTV or getting it, we will find that society’s socially challenged will find our town an attractive place to live.”

The cameras will be connected to Dargaville Police station in real time, and constantly monitored by a paid observer supported by 12 volunteers from the community.

Crime fighting cameras for Dargaville “Thus we will be looking for people to come forward to assist with monitoring the system,” said Mr Mortensen.

The project is being coordinated by constable Reuben Cohen from Dargaville police.

“Following the installation of CCTV in Kaitaia in 2015, we did a detailed crime review of Dargaville and found the highest concentration is in the CBD along the full length of Victoria and Normanby Streets,” he said.

“We also identified 12 high profile camera locations. We have called this the CCTV Community Project, and look forward to stage two in which we would invite business owners with pre-existing CCTV cameras to join the coverage, if not initially, then when they upgrade to become compatible with the system.”

Its understood business cameras will initially be recorded at the police CCTV facility for instant access, in the event of an incident.

Dargaville joins communities throughout New Zealand in getting CCTV surveillance, with thousands of cameras watching over towns and cities.

Strict regulations govern privacy, and police policy states that the objective of installing the cameras is to reduce the incidence of crime and disorder so members of the community feel safe when visiting the public areas covered by the cameras.

This policy applies to crime prevention cameras installed at fixed sites in public places for a general crime prevention

Crime prevention cameras are not used to maintain surveillance on individuals or groups — they are to prevent and detect criminal offences in identified high crime areas. Cameras are used for the deterrence or immediate detection of criminal offences and must be operated in a manner that complies with the Privacy Act 1993. ¢

The bylaw was put in place to help govern the future management of water-based activities on the lakes after a panel of councillors considered the bylaw submissions and made their recommendations.

“During the consultation period many people said they wanted the bylaw to reduce the 200 metre, fiveknot speed limit area on Lake Taharoa and the debate over appropriate speed limits has now triggered another round of public consultation, ” said NRC chairman Bill Shepherd.

Legally the reduction requires formal approval from the director of Maritime

New Zealand. The NRC is now further consulting on two options — keep the five-knot speed limit to 200 metres from shore or reduce it to 100 metres from shore.

The existing restriction will remain in place in the interim.

The consultation will run until February 28 and include a ‘Have Your Say’ event on February 22 from 10am to midday at the Dargaville Museum.

Teacher excellence awarded u by Anna Harding

Otamatea High School drama and english teacher Ona ‘Ofamo’oni, has been selected for the Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) National Excellence in Teaching Awards.

Out of the 200 teachers nominated in New Zealand, she is one of 18 national award winners to be announced next February. The awards provide communities with the opportunity to formally recognise and thank outstanding teachers and leaders.

“I am very humbled by being selected,” said Ona. “It does feel really awesome to be acknowledged and I have to likewise acknowledge all of the amazing people in my work and personal life who have modelled teaching for me, as well as the parents and principals who have trusted me with their students.”

Ona has been teaching secondary school for 11 years now. She has previously taught mental health clients, tutored in alternative education and mentored for various tertiary institutions in Auckland and Wellington. She has been at Otamatea High School for 18 months.

Coastguard’s highly successful ‘Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade’ campaign is back in time for summer and visiting communities throughout the country including Dargaville on Sunday, December 10 from 1-4pm at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club.

This will be the second year the popular boating safety initiative has been run nationwide using Old4New van to visit popular boat ramps and key locations from the far north to the deep south.

The concept behind the campaign is straightforward: bring your old, damaged or out-of-date lifejacket to the Old4New van and receive a significant discount on a brand new quality Hutchwilco Lifejacket.

“Lifejackets save lives, it’s as simple as that,” says Coastguard New Zealand CEO Patrick Holmes.

“The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign provides an easy and accessible way for people to ensure they have the correct number of fit for purpose lifejackets to wear on their boat.”

Some of the good quality, tradedin lifejackets that meet New Zealand standards will then be shipped to atrisk communities in the Pacific Islands.

The campus had 105 students with an age range of 15-75 this semester.

The year finishes in three weeks and all courses, except apiculture which starts on January 8, start back in mid-February.

Courses range in duration from 12 weeks to one year and they are all full time, except bee-keeping which has a part-time option.

NorthTec’s Dargaville regional administrator Dene Holyoake, said that one of her highlights this year was the opening of The Kumara Vine cafe run by the hospitality students, with fresh produce supplied by the horticulture students. The cafe is open 9.30am2.30pm Tuesday-Friday but is closed over the Christmas break.

Thirteen-year-old Tania Ututaonga has started teaching hip hop dance in Dargaville. Bull-bar is the name of her company and she’s keen to inspire her peers to get involved and work hard, at the dance style she loves.

The Northland Regional Council begins an aerial survey of the Pouto Peninsula and other areas this month, seeking data on the overall health of Northland forests. It also identifies dead or dying kauri trees to help manage and prevent the spread of the dieback disease.

“I always loved dancing and I started in a crew when I was eight years old, with the Hardcore Dance Company in Whangarei,” she said.

After years of traveling back and forward to dance, Tania with the help of mum Sharon and dad Ray, has just completed her first term of dance lessons. She has three different age group classes that cater to 3-17-year-olds.

Next year, alongside running classes again, Tania plans to start her own crew, with auditions happening by the end of the year.

Sharon said that “there’s always

ongoing competitions in New Zealand and overseas, so you need to have that ongoing support, workshops and upskilling if you want to make it. So we thought we’d give back to the Dargaville community, as there’s youth in the area that are interested.”

“I just love hip hop because as soon as I see other people dancing, I want to dance. I also like the songs and it just makes me feel happy. I want to make a career out of it,” said Tania.

After receiving a lotteries community grant, work on the Ruawai walk and cycleway will begin. The almost four kilometre walk follows the waterfront from Ruawai Wharf to the end of Simpson Road.

A subcommittee of the Ruawai Promotions and Development Group will oversee the project which is expected to begin in late February and be completed later in the year, with a celebratory opening and fun run walk event.

The project was spearheaded over 12 months ago by Stella Clyde. “Stella gathered up a group of interested community people, found out their strengths and together we made it happen” said chair of the sub-committee Anna Curnow.

For now, the focus is on making new signs for the walkway, with information about the area’s history and wildlife on them.

The new track will also connect to public roads, allowing users to complete a loop of just under 10km. “Over the past few years the government has invested over $50 million into cycle tracks nationwide, so it is hoped that if local Kaipara communities show some initiative and make a start, they may

attract larger scale funding to link their tracks,” said Sport Northland Kaipara community connector Roxanne Kelly.

“Kaipara is now being seen as one of the key walking and cycling destinations, especially being within a day trip of a major city population. But for now though Ruawai leads the way.” ¢

Northpower electricity consumers throughout Kaipara and Northland will receive some extra spending money this Christmas thanks to the annual cash credit from the trust.

The Northpower Trust has announced its annual distribution which will see $80 credited back to everyone connected to the Northpower network. There are 57,500 electricity connections in the Kaipara and Whangarei Districts.

The credit will be displayed on power bills sent out by electricity retailers in either December or January.

Northpower Trust Chairman Eric Angelo says the latest distribution

will provide a financial boost to local economy of around $4.5 million and takes the total amount given back to residents in Kaipara and Whangarei by the Trust since 1993 to well over $90 million.

“What is really pleasing with this latest distribution is reaching such a significant milestone and being able to continue consistently giving back to our consumer beneficiaries

once again,” says Mr Angelo.

“We know from talking to families that this credit is really helpful around the Christmas period.”

Mr Angelo says the distribution reflects Northpower’s steady growth in its locally-owned electricity and broadband networks, along with its contracting business which works with numerous electricity distribution networks throughout the North Island. ¢

“The idea is to change the culture for the better in an organisation. It is mostly to do with verbal communication.

How to get instructions across without causing anxiety and dealing with conflict — topics like that.

“There’s also some embedded literacy and numeracy skills, if that’s identified as an issue. We have a skeleton programme, but it changes depending on the needs of the group.”

Sarah has already begun work with businesses around town, including a collaboration with Healthier Fitter Stronger Northern Wairoa (HFS), where a free fitness and communication programme has been devised. “It’s targeted at employed people and

provided there is a commitment made to attend the communication session, I will pay their HFS membership for the first 40 hours,” said Sarah.

Sarah is especially keen to work with employees in the rural industry as “it can be a very lonely life for a young person and it’s often quite unsupported,” she said.

“If we can get groups of around eight in an area, there’s a lot of potential.

“It’s just about supporting people.

A lot of problems stem from just not being able to communicate with others.

It’s life changing stuff really and I’d just love to make it work here.”

With funds raised by the Dargaville community, local couple Josie Scott and Graeme Ramsey are helping improve sanitation, education and health care for people in Ghana. The couple have been living and volunteering there since January and are due home early next year.

They have been running the not-forprofit Meet Me There African Home Eco Lodge, which supports the NGO Dream Big Ghana.

Through the NGO, they have recently finished building a much needed toilet facility to be shared by about 30 people.

The Dargaville community also donated gifts like books and colouring pencils to the Dream Big Ghana Community learning centre, which opened in March this year.

Josie has been going to Ghana every other year since 2008, after she attended drum school there.

A typical day is filled looking after working volunteers and guests at the lodge they run.

“We love the climate, the people and the area we are living in. It’s a much slower pace of life.

“One of the daily mottos here is ‘we use what we have’, which is often very little and actually of course, everything we need.”

Otamatea Martial Arts have been celebrating the success of seven members graduating with the Kempo black belt.

The committee refurbishing Dargaville’s historic river walk has officially named the project, Amber Threads: Tales and Trails, and are on track to finish it next year.

The significant achievement went to four teenage students and three adult students in the Kaipara club, all of whom have come through the martial arts’ ranks.

“These are the first black belts to come through since we started so it’s quite a momentous time,” said instructor Craig Bennets.

“It ultimately represents years of dedication and training. The Kempo black belt is not just about learning the art but also encouraging students to pass the art on which is part of the programme we’re developing.”

The Otamatea Martial Arts club started a few years ago in Kaiwaka

and after developing a “good following” has set up schools in both Wellsford and Mangawhai with a following of 5570 students.

“It started as casual, then morphed into something more serious — it’s been a nice organic growth.” says Craig.

The martial arts’ club takes Kempo and Tai Chi classes with a strong focus on martial arts’ self-defence and practical street awareness with the Tai Chi programme offering meditation and a slower form of self defence.

The project is made up of two walks — the Butter Barques and Gum Trail, referencing the history around the dairy company, kauri logs being shipped down the river and how kauri gum was once a major industry.

The second, which goes through the town and gardens, is called Time and Tides Trail.

It alludes to the town’s history of things like the old gasworks, brick factory and the one lane Northern Wairoa bridge.

“We are hoping to not only promote the history of the area but encourage people, both locals and visitors, to participate in the physical aspects of the walk, while increasing their local knowledge and enjoying the views,” said committee member Raewyn Sills.

The committee is currently working on designing and compiling information for the signs with hopes to erect them in March 2018. They’re also working towards having a brochure with trail maps available early next year. ¢

Mother and daughter Suzie, and 16-year-old Mikayla Rogers are the faces behind the Helping Hands initiative which is putting together Christmas hampers for deserving families in need.

This is the Rogers’ second Christmas in the area and second time putting together hampers, however this time they have reached out for the community’s support.

“I put the idea out to the local community Facebook pages to ask if people would give us a hand putting the hampers together. We’ve had some amazing donations so far,” said Suzie.

“We’ve got 10 hampers — two of them are for the elderly and the rest of them are for families with quite a few children.

“A lot of these people don’t know they’ve been nominated for a hamper.

That’s the whole loveliness of it all, they’re not expecting it at all.”

The hampers include food and gifts for a baby to a 16-year-old and end up with

families in Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai. While Suzie says she has received lots of donated presents they are still needing more non-perishable food to include with the hampers.

She was also happy to find out that the Mangawhai Domain Christmas event on December 16 will be encouraging attendees to place a can of food or present under the Christmas tree which will in turn be donated to Helping Hands.

Suzie says organising the hampers is “incredibly heart warming.”

“Especially this year with the help from the community seeing our vision for less poverty, and just generally helping people in need with no judgement.”

Lifting the spirits of each other

From farming to the bends An afternoon out in the boat to dive for scallops turned into a different type of adventure for Maungaturoto farmer, Logan Diamond.

“I was out diving in the Whangarei Harbour at a favourite spot and had been down a few times. On my next dive, I started feeling a bit average but kept going, and before long I wasn’t feeling very good at all,” Logan says.

“I must have come up too fast or too many times, and once I was back in the boat that last time, I really felt like it was all closing in on me. Down on the sea bed, I had felt like I was going to vomit and the feeling just got worse. Something definitely wasn’t right. I felt like a bad mix between sick and drunk.”

Once back on shore, Logan vomited, but still tried to make it home, where he was found by his wife Zaria, asleep in his ute and still in his wetsuit. Panic kicked in and Zaria stripped him of his wetsuit, dressed him and got him into her car to take him to Whangarei Hospital.

“I was panicking but didn’t want to show our two-year-old that, so I just hurried to get him into my car to take him to hospital. I knew it wasn’t good.

On arrival, they said a nitrogen bubble might have passed through his brain and by that point I was a trembling mess but holding it together for him and our baby,” Zaria says.

“I felt better when they said the rescue helicopter was on its way to collect him and take him to Auckland, as I knew it meant he would be getting help faster.

Without that helicopter, I don’t know if he would still be here today for his kids and me.”

The Nor thland Rescue Chopper transported him to North Shore Hospital, t h e c o un t r y ’s s p e c i a li s t h o s p i t a l for dealing with the bends . Logan remembers it well, despite his condition. “ The guys in the helicopter were so professional. They came in and spoke with me before the flight and made me more comfortable about what was ahead. During the flight, they talked to me the whole way and kept me informed – even when we were on the roof of the other hospital, they kept reassuring me.”

Running a semi-permanent garage sale, to raise funds for local community projects can have some surprises when loads are dropped off by well-meaning donors, and a supporter of The Den in Maungaturoto, local actor, Peter Matheson, is no exception.

A simple gift of demolition timber was being sorted, when he came across the land version of a ‘message in a bottle’ — in this case a message to the future on a wooden wall panel.

“It apparently came from a demolished hostel at Dargaville high school as the message, in felt-tipped pen, records ‘ the year the hotel is closing in 2013.”

It goes on to say ‘There is (sic) only three of us. I’m the only girl. This was my room for only a term.

‘I’m going to miss all the people and this place. If a person ever reads this, or any of the other notes, you will not know how we lived in the hostel, what we did, what we talked about or how much this place means to us. Whenever something new comes to town it brings fresh opportunities. So the opening of a new cafe with a quirky name and some interesting ideas was sure to deliver a few. As it turns out, the establishment of the Barking Zebra on the corner of Beach Road and Normanby Street in Dargaville has done more than most — the team here are all locals savouring the opportunity to put their creative ideas and hospitality skills to the test.

Head chef Michael Quelch has been given free rein by cafe manager Kim, who simply told the talented young culinary artist to present a menu with a difference. A hand-picked crew, many of whom have been trained locally thanks to NorthTec, have helped make that creative brief a reality, backing up a menu full of traditional tastes and fresh surprises with that mainstay of a great cafe — fresh-roasted espresso coffee. Sous chef Kama Gilmour has also had invaluable input, bringing a formidable skill at baking to the table in the form of home-made slices, pies and what can only be described as the perfect archetype of the classic Kiwi sausage roll.

Over the past week the team have come together to work as a precision unit, and it’s been necessary — curiosity

and a budding reputation have seen the Barking Zebra busy for its whole inaugural week. Nevertheless, the kitchen here — clearly visible from the dining area — is a place of calm industry. Serving up fillet steaks with camembert, fresh salad and home made onion jam on ciabatta one minute, and preparing candy floss for a young customer the next — these folks take it in their stride.

Eclectic menu choices like sweet chili nachos and beetroot and cashew salad sit together well thanks to the laidback vibe, and the Barking Zebra is not ‘too cool’ to feature both a kids’ menu and a kids’ playroom — a godsend for busy mums.

Keep an eye out for chicks You never know where and when a kiwi will show up.

Many people think kiwi live in the forest only but that is not always the case.

I recently received a female kiwi that was hit with a weed-eater that had the steel blade. A guy was clearing long grass from a fence line when suddenly, bang, a kiwi rolled out.

I had photos of her that I put on Facebook so you can see the damage. This kiwi should be called lucky as she had four big gashes - two on one side and two on the other.

Bruce the vet cleaned her up and sutured all the wounds, by which time she looked like an old pair of socks with thread all over the place.

She is now walking around inside her brood box and looks like she will make a full recovery.

From now until the end of January is when many of native birds have their young. However, the better weather is when people start cutting down trees and cleaning up ready for summer.

If you find a nest or chicks don’t feed them. Contact us and we will advise you what to do. Also, never put water in with baby birds as they get wet and end up with pneumonia. Just keep them warm until you can get them to the Centre.

Also, remember when cutting tall trees near powerlines to first give Northpower a call on 0800 10 40 40 to make sure it’s safe to cut the tree down.

Some years ago, I wanted to cut a big Rimu tree down that had died. I had the chainsaw, hard hat and gloves but not the right gear for climbing up ten metres, so I got someone else to do the job safely.

From now until the end of summer we are very busy at the Recovery Centre, so if you come for a visit and no one is around, it maybe that we are out picking up birds.

Remember, birds can be left at the Centre in the cages on the deck. Write your contact number on the whiteboard so we can let you know how the bird is getting on and find out where to return the bird once it is recovered.

Because here’s the truth — while young Kiwi drivers are great at tests on paper, easily remembering the technical rules of the road, many are daunted by real practical tests behind the wheel.

It’s a high pressure situation, often described as more frightening than academic exams, and the new virtual programme seeks to remedy this.

“This is truly a world-first in driver education,” said ACC Road Injury Prevention Manager, Simon Gianotti.

ACC research says that the most difficult group of drivers to reach are males aged 18 and 19, and they’re also some of the most at risk of serious injury. “We spoke to hundreds of young Kiwis and we know that many of them feel daunted by practical driving tests.

We also know drivers who are better at spotting hazards are safer drivers.”

The VR programme is designed to work with a headset which accommodates many popular brands of mobile smartphones — there’s no need to own an expensive PS4 or PC with a dedicated virtual reality interface.

Rescue service in new hands

Since the early 1990s, when he was still an apprentice in the automotive trade, Ross Gillespie has been waiting for a phone call. Not a specific customer ringing for his services as a panelbeater — but the call to action which means someone, on one of the thousands of kilometres of roads in the Kaipara — needs his help.

As a tow truck driver in a rural area, he’s seen his fair share of wild and bizarre rescues, as well as being on the scene side-by-side with the fire service and police. Ross says he’s seen his role behind the wheel of his distinctive bright golden trucks as a bit of an ambassador to the region as well, helping out tourists and even offering them accommodation when their car’s off the road and there’s ‘no room at the inn’. All the while, through late-night call outs to Christmas holiday breakdowns, to rescues in the rain — and even having to stay the night in an abandoned car when he and his police contact were trapped by high rivers in the Waipoua forest — Ross has known that the next call could come at any time.

Now, for the first time in a very long time indeed, he’s passing the keys and the duty over to a new set of hands.

Craig Ross and his brother Michael are picking up the torch as Kaipara’s roadside rescuers, taking charge of the big flat-deck trucks while Ross himself concentrates on the continued success and expansion of his panel and paint business. Craig jokes that the similarity between his surname and the outgoing boss’ first name will make it easy to remember the new logo for the towing business — Ross Recovery and Transport.

Dargaville local Mike Mudford recently returned from an 800km hikoi starting in Cape Reinga and heading south over 44 days.

Dargaville local Tii Aloua, with the help of friends, has started a ‘Christmas in a shoebox’ initiative in which people donate children’s gifts to be distributed to local families in need.

Mike and his wife Jean self-funded the trip which has been a goal of Mike’s since falling seriously ill four years ago.

Unable to complete his goal of completing the Camino walk in Spain he decided to take on a hikoi of thanksgiving in the North Island and raise money for Habitat for Humanity.

Mike said the first two weeks of the journey were the hardest and the long days of walking meant he lost nine kilograms.

“So much so that I no longer needed by insulin injection!”

He battled all weather conditions and handed out his card with the Habitat bank account number every time people stopped to chat. A special moment for Mike was when staff and clients from his old place of work Kaurilands joined him in Kamo to walk 13km.

“We had huge support from Dargaville, and around the world — it was massive.”

In total he raised $2,453 for Habitat for Humanity to go towards a new home build.

But he says he would do it all again in a “heartbeat.”

He already has a couple of speaking engagements lined up to relay his hikoi journey and has plans in the pipeline for his next adventure. ¢

The idea is that people fill up a shoebox with gifts for children between ages 2-16. Once wrapped and labelled with an age and gender, people can then contact Tii to organise a drop off or pick up. Single and unwrapped gifts can also be donated.

“The response has been awesome, I’m so overwhelmed with all the support and love that our community gives,” she said.

Around 100 presents had been donated last week and new presents and nominations were coming in everyday.

Children aged 5-10 are the most common age group needing gifts.

Donation cutoff is on Sunday, December

10. The gifts will be distributed on Saturday, December 16, as far as Pouto, Tangowahine and Kaihu.

Suggestions of families who will benefit from a gift are welcomed and kept confidential, said Tii. “There’s so many people in our community that really do suffer and struggle.

“It’s about making our children smile because they wake up to something on Christmas day, and create less pressure for parents.”

KAURI DIEBACK AERIAL SURVEY The annual aerial survey to identify dead or dying kauri trees, in order to manage and prevent the spread of Kauri Dieback in Northland and for land management purposes, is planned for the following areas between December 2017 and March 2018: • Aupōuri peninsula • Kaitāia area • Whangārei • Southern Northland • Poutō peninsula The regional council will contact you if there any concerns about the health of kauri trees on your property. Individual properties will not be publicly identified as a result of this work.

PROPOSED CHANGE TO THE NAVIGATION SAFETY BYLAW FOR KAI IWI LAKES We’re seeking feedback on a proposed change to the recently adopted Navigation Safety Bylaw for Kai Iwi Lakes in relation to the five-knot speed restriction on Lake Taharoa.

The proposed change would see the speed restriction reduced from 200 metres to 100 metres from shore right around Lake Taharoa.
