Down on the river bank, last weekend, bright blue skies attracted families from all round the district including three generations of the Hansen clan.

John was there with his daughter Angela and his grandchildren, Lani, 11, Ema, 6 and Kaitlin, 8 who all said it was ”an awesome night.”

“The true meaning of Christmas is what it’s all about,” said organiser, Pauline Taylor.

The huge gathering was entertained by 20 local acts including guitarist, Taz Nesbit, the Dargaville Primary School choir, Anna-Marie Cutts and Peter Martin. There was an angels and shepherds competition, enthusiastic flash mobs and live painting by Trevor Moss.

Over in the Town Hall, Circus Kumarani’s show was lauded as their best yet. A highlight was a four-act Christmas story performed by a cast of 30 adults and children and other acts included tightwire, clowning, juggling and uni-cycling.

Polocrosse, a mix of polo, lacrosse and netball, is making a comeback in Pouto and the horse sports club is hosting its first Chukka Carnival in 24 years on December 15 and 16.

A match is made up of chukkas, a time period normally lasting six to eight minutes, and a mix of different ages and sexes play in each chukka, six per team.

“It can be played from the early age of six up to the spirited age of seventy and is one of the few sports where females can compete on an equal footing with their male counterparts,” says organiser, Sheree Marlow.

She began playing when she was young and three years ago, a group of like minded people thought it would be a good opportunity to bring the small community together and began the Pouto Horse Sports who also

take part in rodeo, hunting and hacking.

Twenty members play polocrosse and train twice a week in the summer months and travel around the country for tournaments.

“It’s exciting and the kids are looking forward to playing on our home ground,” says Sheree who welcomes spectators.

The matches will be played on Pukemiro Road and the gate fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children that will go towards the Te Kopuru fire brigade. Fourteen year old, Jodi Macalister has ambitions of becoming a professional golfer, and with her impressive array of trophies, it seems like only a question of when.

“She is the only junior girl at our golf club and she has been playing for Northland senior women’s teams — it’s a huge achievement and she will go a long way,” says Northern Wairoa Golf Club, club captain, Ros Ingram.

This year alone she has won six trophies including the Meyer Cup inter collegiate golf, best gross, junior player of the year, and under 16 Maori championship, best gross.

She got into golf four years ago while being a caddy for her Dad and began playing golf on a handicap 54 and now she has beaten her dad “heaps of times” and is down to handicap 4.9.

“My Dad got me into golf — he’s the one I look up to.”

Her achievements include, being selected to play for Northland women against North Harbour winning her match on the 13th hole, as well as shooting a 70 off the stick at a

“Next year I want to be on a scratch which is a handicap zero,” says Jodie who recently picked up another trophy for Match Play Championship at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club prize giving.

December 9-16 Jodi will represent Northland in the women interprovincial tournament in Dunedin.

When a Dargaville resident was buying baby clothes for her grandchild at The Warehouse she never expected that she would be the winner of a nationwide competition becoming $10,000 dollars richer.

The second Kauri Coast Skydiving Carnival held at the weekend was another taster of what looks set to be a 12-weekly event hosted by Northland-based Skydive Ballistic Blondes in conjunction with the Otamatea Aero Club.

“We will be coming back to the Kauri Coast around every three months, we have such amazing fun and support from the community and the club,” said Kelly.

The first carnival was held in August this year but stopped early due to bad weather.

“We had beautiful weather this time and we got to jump the winners of skydiving prizes that missed out in August,” said Kelly.

The carnival ran Saturday and Sunday at the airfield with tandem jumps along with the sporties jumping from low altitudes, otherwise known as ‘hop and pops’, as well as three and four way formations and a party at the club on Saturday evening.

“The evening party kicked off with fireworks, along with a DJ and lots of dancing that went on long into the night.”

A joint initiative between the Kaipara District Council, Northland Regional Council and the Mangawhai Business Development Association will provide for a trial bus service at Mangawhai during the busy holiday season.

Council sees it as a solution to the summer traffic congestion and parking problems that occur on Wintle Street as the carpark at Mangawhai Heads fills up.

Mangawhai Business Development Association chair, Mike McGarry, welcomes the service as a means for people to move freely around the area without a vehicle.

“It’s about providing a service to visitors so they can get to the surf beach, the village and the heads easily and for local

businesses and the whole community to utilise.”

The service will operate from the Mangawhai School through to the Mangawhai Heads Surf Club and return.

Chair of the Commissioners, John Robertson said, “This is local collaboration at its best — a win/win for everyone. I want to encourage everyone to literally get on board and support this initiative.”

Each organisation will contribute a one-third share of the $10,000 needed to enable Leabourn Passenger Services to run the service which will run from December 27 to around January 13.

Proposed one-way fares are adults $2, children $1 and children under 5 free.

The fast-paced rounds are more exciting to watch than grueling 8 hour touring car races, the action is all in view from anywhere in the stands, and the cars and drivers are evenly matched, leaving the edge between victory and defeat down to courage, skill and determination — not the depth of the racing team’s pockets!

In fact you’ll see everything from custom built saloons to barely modified street cars (all you need is a roll cage and a helmet to get amongst the

action) tearing around the track on both the 9th of December and the 13th of January, and this is a sport which makes no distinction between genders and ages, just classes of vehicle.

Bevin says that the youngest club driver is still in her teens, and that gutsy driving is far more important than a million-dollar car. Speedway is one of the least expensive forms of motorsport to compete in, and with some races embracing punishing fullcontact, you wouldn’t want to have spent thousands on paint and polish!

Lake views open up Home is where the heart is Tourists and locals can now enjoy the tranquility of Kai Iwi Lakes from more perspectives with improved walking tracks and scenic views.

Domain ranger, Dave Bolland has been extending tracks around Lake Kai Iwi and Taharoa as well as a high level track behind Pine Beach offering stunning views from the lakes to Maunganui Bluff.

It is now possible to spend 40 minutes strolling around Lake Kai Iwi and two hours walking around the shore of Taharoa with almost no road walking.

Mr Bolland said that while he was making improvements he kept things as natural as possible and believes the tracks will be popular with

both walkers and mountain bike riders.

“I estimate about 70 per cent of the people who come here do a walk — overseas visitors particularly seem to want to get out and see things by foot.”

The walk from the Lakes to Ripiro Beach has also recently been upgraded by the Department of Conservation and the Dargaville Tramping group co-ordinator, Lynley Thompson was impressed after a recent visit.

“It’s very walk-able and I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Auditor General’s report delayed

Court protest

The Office of the Auditor General’s report into the Mangawhai Wastewater Scheme has been delayed until at least March 2013.

At the November Kaipara District Council meeting, chief executive, Steve Ruru advised the report into the way in which council managed the Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme which was expected to be released end of December has been delayed until at earliest March next year.

“At this stage it is understood that the Office of the Auditor General is aiming to have much of their inquiry work completed before the end of December to enable the consultation process with directly affected parties on the draft report to comment,” he said.

“It is understood there is some risk associated with this timetable and, given this, it is likely the report will not be released until at least the end of the first quarter of 2013.”

Also at the meeting, Chair of Commissioners, John Robertson presented a report to council and the wider community, outlining key issues to be addressed at speed including organisational development, financial management, contract management, addressing past rating irregularities and community engagement.

He noted the resilience of community groups and community-led economic development initiatives, saying “there is plenty of passion about development and we would like to be facilitators of projects for the community, for individuals and organisations.”

Commissioner, Colin Dale, said, “we have a lot of DIY community development — for the most part people get on and do things. Council don’t have a lot of

resources but we can act as a catalyst to bring people together.”

An inaugural quarterly report was presented by Mr Ruru and will be used in future to monitor organisational progress and to ensure council remains on track.

“The reports will provide the basis for the Annual Report. They present progress made during the year towards achieving levels of service targets as outlined in the Long Term Plan,” said Mr Ruru.

“We encourage the same improved financial reporting throughout all of council’s activities,” said commissioner, Peter Winder.

Justice of the Peace, Eric Smitton believes the only way to stop the Dargaville District Court becoming a “hearings only” court is by public demonstration.

by Northland Regional Council member, Graeme Ramsey, have organised a protest outside the court house, December 10 at 12.15pm.

Last week the committee had a small triumph convincing Court Minister, Chester Burrows to come to a public meeting although committee were not stratified with Mr Burrow’s reasons which included modernising services.

Green MP, David Clendon will also present a petition which Kaipara Grey Power collected with around 1200 signatures to parliament.

Mr Smitton says they also have backing from Labour spokesperson for justice, Charles Chauvel.

A collection of Kaipara homesteads Big family fun at Mangawhai  by Kim Munro

Preparations for the annual Mangawhai Domain Society’s summer gala on January 2 are underway.

Following on from the success of last year’s calendar of local churches, the Anglican Parish of Northern Wairoa has created a 2013 calendar, this time showcasing historic homes in the Kaipara past and present.

The collection includes well-known residences such as the Mission Station house at Tangiteroria, the Harding homestead at Aoroa and Dr Matich’s residence in Hokianga Road. The drawings have been reproduced in sepia and are accompanied by a short history of each home.

“It was a new idea last year and proved popular — we sold all 300 calendars and they’re selling quickly again this year,” says church treasurer, Shirley Geraghty.

Local artist, Marama Ingle, who supplied eight of the 12 images, says, “the drawings were all done as commissions by the different home owners over the last 30 or so years — some were drawn in watercolour and others in sepia.”

Be aware that the district councils’ unrealistic policies that require building consents should comply with NZ Fire Service Fire Fighting Water Supplies Code of Practice, requiring a dedicated minimum water supply of 45,000 litres for single family dwellings in nonreticulated areas and 180,000 litres for working/business premises, could cause insurance companies to reject insurance cover because of non-compliance.

Many council district plans define buildings as a temporary or permanent movable or immovable structure (including a structure intended for occupation by people, animals, machinery or chattels).

It is time that we all wake up and

take an interest in what our district and regional councils are foisting on property owners and how they are threatening our property rights.

Farmers of New Zealand and our President have always been staunch defenders of private property rights. Ian Walker, chairing the Northland Regional Council committee that developed the Regional Policy Statement and maps, has ensured real progress can be made in respect to both property rights and the ability to develop our natural resources in Northland.

For some critics it has not gone far enough but to make greater progress we need Parliament to respect property rights and simply they do not, and have

not for some time. Northland National MP Mike Sabin following the recent Northland economic summit, stated that RMA costs and red tape are a serious concern.

Unfortunately, so far all we have seen from this National led government is a number of RMA National Policy Statements that actually make matters worse.

For the first time the importance of the economy has been recognised in the Northland Regional plan. This change of emphasis from one dominated by environmental considerations, to a more balanced approach where the other factors like economy and development, come into serious consideration.

The RMA was never about environmental protection. Its function is: “Managing the use, development, and protection of natural and physical resources in a way, or at a rate, which enables people and communities to provide for their social, economic, and cultural wellbeing, and for their health and safety.”

We believe that the state of Northland and other rural regions’ social, economic, health and safety is so poor, because the current RMA planning documents have historically NOT delivered the main purpose of the Act. Change is needed and the RPS being a document that all other plans must adhere to is where to start.

Regarding regional mapping, local communities and not paid consultants or the Courts, should have more influence in the process.

At the moment case law is more a determinant of outstanding landscape maps than any other factor. Because of this fact, and despite Ian Walker’s best efforts, the criteria set to determine the maps, did not include any consideration of economic values.

However, we do not believe the mapping process adhered to the new principles set down in the proposed RPS that now clearly acknowledges economic values.

We have had legal advice that it would be appropriate and not unlawful for economic values to be entered or mentioned throughout the maps where it has or can be identified.

This will add both balance and weight to the fact that despite being identified as an ‘outstanding landscape’ does not mean it cannot be mined or developed in some way.

Farmers of New Zealand has submitted the appropriate submission and as always we will continue to vigorously defend the rights of landowners and the well-being of our rural community against those that undermine personal freedoms and our democratic rights that go back to the time of the Magna Carta.

food with a storied past and a palette to please every palate — but as local cheese maker Ad Clarijs tells us, gourmet cheese is not really that difficult to make.

The traditional method, passed down from the middle ages, was developed by simple farmers and only later developed into an artisan craft; in the old days making cheese was one of the daily tasks on a family farm. It’s just as easy today, and the results are satisfying as well as tasty!

Though originally hailing from the Netherlands (a nation famed for delicious cheese), Ad only began making cheese after coming to New Zealand with his family in the 1980s. With the help of an established Kiwi cheese maker in Mercer, and on the site of what is now Kaiwaka Organics, Ad set out to turn fresh locally sourced milk into a variety of cheese called gouda.

With milking equipment bought and 70 cows of his own, Ad’s local fame grew. When it was no longer

then known as Koanga Gardens the entire cheese making operation was moved, gaining a familiar element — the iconic cheese shop beside Kaiwaka’s main highway.

Now retired from retail, Ad is passionate about sharing his expertise and knowledge with others. Cheese making fits well with the modern trend toward self sufficiency, as well as the more international flavours found in the modern kitchen. Now it’s possible to learn the simple, straightforward steps to making and maturing your own gourmet cheeses, the likes of which any delicatessen would be proud to stock.

Ad teaches short workshops covering everything from the inexpensive equipment needed to make cheese right through to the maturing process — and of course, a little tasting! Flax revival at museum

 At a flax planting are a group of weavers and Kauri Museum staff

From the arrival of the Maori, the ubiquitous New Zealand flax bush has provided for a huge variety of human needs, and Kaipara European settlement was to a large part based on flax industries. Now the Kauri Museum is the scene of a revival, with the planting of varieties of traditional flaxes, recently visited by Sue Scheele, an ethno botanist with Landcare Research who developed the National New Zealand Flax Collection.

“To have part of a national collection

is wonderful to share with our local weavers,” said museum CEO Bet Nelley.

“When offered this collection, my mind went to our local weaver Martha Hetaraka and how she enjoys trying different flax for weaving.

Flax once grew luxuriantly in parts of Matakohe and the Smith family harvested flax and it was milled here, before they switched to kauri. To me it seems a great opportunity to return flax to Matakohe.”

This time of year anglers are looking to get the most out of their torpedo fishing, and a great place to start is with the best gear. The Predator torpedo system has been a top performer here in the north, with its smart shape and design cutting through those big waves. During the last 12 months Mike reckons he’s not seen a Predator customer with a single problem — they’re a great, robust product.

Sharks can be a nuisance for torpedo fishers, biting off hooks and through lanker lines. Mike suggests seeing him to upgrade to a tough 2.5mm lanker line — he’s only seen these fall prey to sharks 3 times in the last 15 years, and that would have been to larger sharks.

He notes that the tougher line is your insurance policy — many insurance companies won’t cover your valuable torpedo while it’s in use. Go for the upgrade, and remember to only allow a 15 minute set at this time of year — any longer is asking for trouble from those sharks!

Good bait is the key to successful torpedo fishing — and fishing in general. Kiwi mullet is superior to imported Aussie varieties, but for a durable, tough bait try new giant squid — it really stays on the hook. See the diagram photo for how to bait your hook correctly. An incorrectly baited hook will twist up your trace and your line as it plays out.

Very experienced fishermen are using shorter traces. Proper baiting to prevent spinning and twisting is also important for surfcasters.

When the catch is in, ‘iki’ your fish with a spike to the brain — this preserves colour and helps in preservation of the fish. Then it’s into a slurry of salt ice and salt water as soon as possible; Every hour out of the water equates to a day of shelf life off your fish, but a good slurry with plenty of salt actually reduces the water temperature to below freezing!
