A message from Kaipara Mayor, Greg Gent Welcome to this special edition of the Kaipara Lifestyler, and a warm welcome too for visitors from near and far in the firm belief they will enjoy what Kaipara has to offer.

Over the years, particularly during my dairy industry days, my wife Ann and I have hosted people on our farming property at Ruawai, many of them from overseas.

What did they enjoy? In short, the myriad attractions of this district we call home and sometimes even take for granted.

The younger folk and also the fitter of our guests found climbing Tokatoka something of a revelation, taking in stunning views of the huge Kaipara harbour and, through 360 degrees, the rich farmland, bush forests and hill country of the hinterland.

I know the great kauri tree, Tane Mahuta, the Lord of the Forest, isn’t strictly ours but it’s close enough to the Kaipara District border to claim ownership. A visit is pretty much a must, and make it a day out with a glass of wine, an oyster or two, or another culinary favourite from some of the fine establishments along the way in Dargaville, Te Kopuru, Ruawai or another of our friendly towns.

Our three museums — at Matakohe, Dargaville and Mangawhai — are a very quick and entertaining way to find out more about how Kaipara came to be,

and I find that provenance is becoming more and more important to people.

These establishments have some fine research facilities with staff and volunteers ready and willing to assist visitors and locals alike.

Speaking of fine food, Mangawhai has some great offerings, along with an excellent artist’s colony — and that is also true across the board in Kaipara, where arts and crafts flourish in every community.

Perhaps one of our greatest attractions is free to enjoy — our magnificent coastline and fine beaches with the huge harbour and fine fishing within. Take a trip down to Pouto and the whole fascinating west coast peninsula.

It is quite unique.

Or drive inland a little to the vaunted Kai Iwi Lakes for pristine waters to camp alongside.

Then there are the many other treasures of the Kaipara, whether that’s Maungaturoto, Pahi, the Tinopai peninsula or a coffee at Paparoa.

People tend to enjoy the difference these small settlements offer. I invite you to go and explore the Kaipara, enjoy our lifestyles, and have a very safe and happy visit, and journey thereafter. ¢

A bright future beckons u by Paul Campbell

In the middle years of the 19th century, Kaipara beckoned immigrants from the other side of the world, with promises of farmland grants, and ease of access from their arrival port of Auckland.

So some consternation ensued when these hardy pioneers found themselves faced with yet more sea travel to reach the planned settlements on the Kaipara Harbour under the Albertland scheme, where 100 acres awaited a family of four.

The organisers of this exodus to New Zealand had prepared maps showing a broad roadway between Auckland and the north. Unfortunately, they did not indicate that this route was only planned — still on paper.

So those early immigrants, whose descendants still farm on the Kaipara today, sold off the wagon wheels they had shipped from Europe, and turned once more to boats into the vast harbour reaches of their new homes.

Today however, that early promise of ease of access into Northland, while it has improved over the ensuing 160-odd years, is taking a quantum leap forward. First came the extended Northern Motorway, then the Northern Gateway Tunnel, and now, the Puhoi to Wellsford motorway.

The new route will perhaps finally fulfil the promise to the Albertland settlers, who concentrated their focus in establishing Wellsford as their centrepiece.

The official beginning of the $700 million project connecting Puhoi to Wellsford came when then Prime Minister John Key and Transport Minister Simon Bridges turned the sod in Warkworth on December 8 2016,

allowing the construction of the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway to commence.

The 18.5km motorway between Puhoi and Warkworth will flow from the toll tunnels to connect with SH1 south of Kaipara Flats Road, north of Warkworth.

On completion, the new expressway will boost the economy of Kaipara and the north, speeding up access for goods and services to and from the region.

It’s also part of a long-term strategy of getting up to Whangarei.

“There are tremendous development opportunities for the people in the north, and there is tremendous tourism opportunities, but we can’t have

motorway networks that can’t handle the volume of traffic,” said Transport Minister Bridges.

“It will also support population growth, connecting the expanding Warkworth area which is expected to grow to 20,000 residents in the next few decades.”

The $700 million project is being delivered through a Public Private Partnership. The second stage of the project will connect Warkworth to Wellsford.

“The NZ Transport Agency has been undertaking investigations and will be sharing an indicative route with the

November figures from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand show Dargaville’s median property price increased 14 per cent, as urban dwellings and also lifestyle properties in the surrounding Kaipara attracted a swathe of new residents.

Compared with the previous month, median house price rose by 9 per cent in Dargaville. But in the Kaipara ward of Otamatea, house sales showed a huge 60 per cent increase.

With an increasing population and ease of access, Kaipara seems destined for a resurgence of economic activity, which first placed it on the map a century ago.

Kaipara has long been a source of wealth, that is still adding to the nation’s coffers though horticulture, dairy farming and processing industries.

Emma and Mark Grieve moved to Kaiwaka with their daughter Molly 15 months-ago from the Waitakere Ranges in Auckland and say the move is the best thing they could have done.

“We moved because we wanted a life, pure and simple. I was a school principal and when we became parents we decided it was more important for me to be with Molly than to work full time,” said Emma.

Mark was an interior designer on superyachts and the couple found Auckland was getting too big and fast.

“We looked at Mangawhai and came to Kaiwaka and got talking to some locals who raved about living here. It was our dream to have some land and we found a property which we fell in love with. It was magic and I can walk to the village.

“We wanted to be a part of a community and we wanted Molly to have friends to play with. We have made so many wonderful friends since we have been here.”

Emma says the community spirit is ‘awesome’ and there are alway activities to be involved in for children.

The township of Mangawhai has seen many changes over the past twelve months with new residents moving to the area, businesses and markets growing and the pioneer village taking shape with historic buildings being relocated to the area by the museum.

In 1860 Albertland settlers landed on these shores and many of their descendants still live here, running the businesses in town and farming the surrounding countryside.

The popular golf club hosts open tournaments and bowling, and petanque clubs are nearby.

Marijke Lindgreen and her partner Brad Brien spent a large portion of their childhood in Mangawhai, and as adults they decided to settle in the area.

Marijke lived in Kaiwaka from 11-years-old until returning to Auckland to pursue a teaching degree and Brad moved to Mangawhai when he was 12 years old.

Marijke now works at Mangawhai Kindergarten and Brad owns Brad Brien Fencing Ltd. “After studying, I travelled to London and then the United States, and hiked the Appalachian Trail. I went snowboarding in Canada and visited Nepal,” says Marijke.

Upon her return to New Zealand she worked in Auckland until last year when her heart found it’s way back to Mangawhai.

“It’s awesome working with the kids and it’s so good living back in the area.

It feels like I am home and whole again.

“A part of me was always here in the Mangawhai. I would visit friends on the weekend and it was hard to return to the city.”

Marijke enjoys taking her horse to the beach and says the hiking trails are great and have amazing views.

“I grew up surfing with my dad Martin and brother Tyson and love the beach

life and my mum Yvonne passed her love of the country and horses on to me,” says Marijke.

Brad enjoys fishing and hunting and meeting people through his work.

“I had worked on farms and had moved to Australia for a while farming.

Then I worked for a friend fencing and decided to come back to Mangawhai and start my own business,” says Brad.

He makes most style fences including batten or post and rail and he can design fancy styles including punga, and re-pile houses.

“The area has grown with people moving out of the city and a lot of the farms have diversified. Lifestyle block owners often discover that they don’t have enough fences and call me to help them sort out what they need, and in the near future we will be designing creative custom made entrance gates.

“We love living here, it is home to us.

There are many community activities and events that you can get involved with and that helps you get to know everyone and make friends.”

Another success for Dan

A summer respite The Mangawhai Artists Gallery is a place to visit when you have had far too much sun, fishing, swimming, kayaking, surfing, boogie boarding or you just want a couple hours away from everybody and the crowds.

It is also a place to take visitors, out of towners, overseas friends or tourists who would like to take a piece of genuine original art home with them to remind them of their wonderful holiday in Mangawhai.

The gallery is open seven days and changes exhibitors every two weeks.

On December 15, the gallery celebrated its first year in which it hosted 15 exhibitions and five art workshops, and welcomed some 630 people through its doors for each two-week exhibition. These have all been run by local artists as well as Friends of Mangawhai Artists, who will step up and help.

Curating and hanging an art exhibition is no easy task. All exhibitors have to hang

their own exhibits. Some artists get others to do it for them, as it is not a skill everyone has, especially in a big group exhibition when there are dissimilar artworks.

Mangawhai Artists Great Summer of Art programme is not over yet with 10 exhibitions scheduled before the end of May. There are joint and group exhibitions and the Art Trail members exhibition will be held at Easter — a very exciting six months ahead.

p Dan Klink at Mangawhai Meat Shop has done it again and won the Best Beer Banger award with the Hallertau Brewery, using the brewery’s Stuntman Iipa beer. “We were delighted to be invited by the company to compete in the best beer banger competition,” said Dan. “They invite six butchers annually. Our sausage is a spin on the bratwurst with molasses, white pepper and onion, so it has a bit of a spiced spin. The creation has come just in time for summer BBQs and they are really popular, more than I imagined they would be. The customers really like them and they are flying out the door.”

Caro Rae grew up in Wellington and would visit her aunt and uncle in Mangawhai every Christmas holidays with her family but never dreamed she would one day live in the town.

“My aunty and uncle have lived here for 40 plus years and we would camp at the camp ground. We could run free and do what we wanted, it was such a safe space to come,” says Caro.

Caro moved to Sydney, Australia some years later and lived there for 11 years.

“My partner Loren and I had our son and we were living in a tiny one bedroom beachside apartment and thought it’s not what we wanted to do or where we wanted to do it.”

Loren works for Campaigntrack, a real estate campaign management company and he decided to work from home so the couple returned to New Zealand a year ago.

“Never did I think we would live in Mangawhai but my dad moved up from Wellington six years ago and that meant we had more family here.

“It is a beautiful place to raise your kids. We haven’t looked at Sydney since. It is incredible how many young families are here and we have met amazing people. I go to the markets every weekend with my ‘Caro with Love’ craft products and lots of women

She says Loren is loving being in the area too.

Jo Bowden of Mangawhai started her 100-kilogram weight-loss journey in March this year with the realisation her son needed her to be healthy to give him security and a life.

“My son Ashar is five years old, has autism and is nonverbal. I used food as a best friend as it was always there for me, without any judgement,” said Jo. One day 30-year-old Jo snapped and told herself she needed to eat food for life not as a friend. She had reached 174 kilograms. Her goal weight is 74 kilograms.

“I am doing my journey with a couple of friends who are also losing weight and we support each other. We now do a circuit around the house like lifting tractor tyres and running.”

Things got difficult when Jo reached a more comfortable weight, so she called in personal trainer Natasha Smith from Coastal Fitness Mangawhai. Natasha gives her support and suggested she

complete a gym challenge which Jo has risen to.

Jo also chose a pair of boots at Bammas in Mangawhai as a treat when she reached a certain goal weight.

“Bamma’s contacted me and said they would gift me the shoes I had chosen as an incentive when I reached my target. I am so thankful for the encouragement.

“My parents have been amazing and a great support too, and Ashar has more of a life because I am not just existing and he is getting more out of every day.

“The hard work has paid off — I still have 20 kilograms to go which I hope to achieve by March. I encourage others to go on their own fitness journey for health. It is amazing.” ¢

Penguins, sparrows and xmas wishes As 2016 nears Christmas I would like to thank some of our big supporters.

Two weeks ago a lady came to the Centre with an injured sparrow. Her seven-yearold daughter was very upset to think the baby sparrow might die but told her we will make him better which brought a smile to her face. She then reached into her pocket, unwrapped a small piece of paper and made a $2. She had been saving money to buy something but wanted us to have the $2.

We now have one of the fattest tame sparrows in New Zealand. We tried to release him only to find he held on tight to my finger while outside so we brought him home to our place and each morning when we sit on the deck having a cup of coffee he flies in and demands some food.

As with every year we are open for injured birds 24/7 and over the Christmas break we do have low staff numbers but Robyn and I will be around every day, so if you have a bird in trouble call us and if you don’t get an answer please leave your name and number.

If you want to drop a bird at the Centre and find no one around just place the Bird in one of the cages on our deck, we have a white board beside the front door which you can leave your contact details on.

When visiting the Centre feel free to fill the donation box up - it won’t fall off the wall as I have two bolts holding it on.

In the summer time heat you will find little blue penguins on the beaches. If you feel it needs to be brought into us, please keep it warm and dry. However, a quick phone call first might save you the trouble of bringing it to us as often it can be placed in the long grass away from harm where it will rest for a few days.

When ready it will go back to the water early in the morning or after dark.

We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

“Our original idea was to install a Pilot Activated Lighting system on our floodlights,” said sports association manager Cheryl Anderson.

This means that when there is a medical emergency in Kaiwaka at night and the rescue helicopter needs to land, the pilot can activate the floodlights himself from inside the cockpit rather than having the volunteer Fire Brigade

called out to switch on the lights. “A PAL system costs $2,300, and I thought since it is a project that benefits the whole community I would see if people would like to donate towards it and we had donations pledged of more than $3,000.”

Cheryl then decided to keep the ball rolling and see if they could raise enough money to build a helipad.

“The way people raised money for the appeal was quite creative — one local lady made up bags of candyfloss to sell, another lady potted plants, our Kaiwaka Cares group held a charity auction and donated a portion of the proceeds, and one local man ran juggling classes.”

Due to the site being boggy extensive drainage was needed and once again the community helped out.

“Local contractors did the earthworks for free, Mark Ottaway spent many hours on his tractor as well as coordinating the works. Bruce Ferguson put in several hours on his tractor, our local concrete guy Phil Keen did the labour on the pad for free, Paul Greig installed the PAL system and Atlas Quarries gave us a generous discount on the aggregate and concrete,” said Cheryl.

“This was a true community effort and we are thankful to everyone who helped make this project the success it is.” ¢

Sunshine Organics in Maungaturoto has new owners and a new name. Murray and Kimberley Partridge relocated to the township in mid October and have changed the name of the store to Whole Life Organics.

Kimberley originates from Northern California and moved to New Zealand eight years ago to promote her Prana Therapy aromatherapy products and Murray lived in Australia for 30 years and returned home to New Zealand a few years ago.

The couple lived in Silverdale and journeyed around Northland to find a new location to live and say they stumbled upon Maungaturoto.

A community spirit After turning onto State Highway 12 at Brynderwyn, travellers will soon discover the historic farming centre of Maungaturoto — ‘The heart of the Kaipara’.

The Albertland settlers arrived creating this town over 150 years ago colonising the northern Kaipara Harbour. Steeped in history, Kauri formed the backbone of early industry in the region.

“We wanted beautiful furniture and found Beau’s work has a true craftsmanship with a great sense of proportion. I am sure this comes from him being an artist and a photographer, as well as a furniture maker, and having something sustainable meant a lot to us,” said owner Pam Goode.

The garden bar has been a part of the hotel’s redevelopment plan and now there is seating for 50 people outside the dining room and inside the garden bar.

Beau Zimmer says he was honoured to supply the outdoor furniture for the newly revamped hotel.

“For these tables I have used a batch of over 100-year-old Pine that was recovered floor joists from a factory in Rotorua.

“I sourced the wood from an elderly man on the North Shore who had stored it for more than 20 years.In the

future I hope to turn my hobby into a successful business that will provide one-off, feature pieces at an affordable price that will last a lifetime.”

The garden bar has beautiful views down the Paparoa Valley and across the river.

“It is a great place to enjoy a meal and we plan to have functions and music in the future. The area is also available for function hire,” says Pam. “Our hotel manager Kevin Cholmondeley-Smith is setting a high standard of excellence and friendly service as well as delivering a great menu based on local produce and seafood, fresh ingredients and surprising flavours and delicious meals with our resident chef Dino Robertson.”

A community celebration The Ruawai Community Christmas Parade saw 14 floats cruise the street with a variety of stalls, crafts and food available creating a festive atmosphere.

“It was a great day and the community came out in force.

The floats were all very well presented and the Maungaturoto/ Paparoa marching team joined in the festivities,” said coorganiser Elaine Crompton.

“We had a great year in Ruawai with events and community projects taking place such as the gazebo on the village green. The annual rose show and calf club days were very successful. The old ElleCees cafe is due to reopen and we have a bookshop opening in the early New Year.

“The parade was a great way to end the year as a community and we look forward to good things happening in the town next year.” ¢

Making Property investment plain sailing In areas where rental property is in high demand, rents are high and available stocks for tenants are low, it can be tempting for investors to purchase ‘fixer-upper’ types of properties cheaply in order to quickly do them up and rent them out.

There are many other key items that tenants look out for if an investor is looking to spend slightly more, such as heat pumps, alarm systems, or regular ongoing garden maintenance included in the rent.

Ultimately the sky’s the limit when it comes to what you can spend, but a frugal investor can also make big changes to the attractiveness and rentability of a property if they spend smart.

A different kind of learning Dargaville High School students took a break from their academic lessons and turned their attention to the community during the school’s ‘Project Week’. The activity was designed to get students involved and contributing to the community in a meaningful way.

“Project Week was about providing students with different kinds of learning: collaboration, teamwork and problem solving,” said project week organiser Mrs France Maclennan.

“Our driving question was looking at what we can do to improve and engage with our school and community.”

One group of 25 students spent the week making and selling baked goods around Dargaville town centre to fundraise for the local St Johns Ambulance Service as well as Dargaville and Te Kopuru Fire Brigades.

“I really liked advertising down in town, walking around and talking to new people and telling them about our week,” said year nine student Meadow Cook.

“I enjoyed helping out St John and the fire brigades. It was good to do something a bit different.”

From their sales, students were able to gift a total of $900 to the local fire brigades and St Johns Ambulance.

Representatives from each service met with students to thank them for their contribution.

“The week was a real success,” said Dargaville High School teacher Cara Wood.

The collection has been at the Kumara Box since August this year when it was relocated from Barry’s garage.

It also tells the story of the geological features in the Kaipara area.

“Ninety-five per cent of this display is locally sourced from Ripiro Beach and the Kaipara Harbour,” said Kumara Box owner Ernie, the Kumara King.

“People love to learn about this stuff and it’s important to educate children about it.

“Every bit of litter ends up in the ocean. Eighty per cent of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean and the

John Pickworth and Donna Shadick lived in Te Arai on a lifestyle block for 13 years and recently made the move across the Kaipara to the outskirts of Dargaville.

We wish our valued customers a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

“We enjoy the beaches and lakes and the opportunities Dargaville has to offer. The lifestyle you can have here is wonderful and this is closer to John’s work in Dargaville as he commuted daily,” said Donna.

The couple originally moved from Whitford in Auckland when their children became school age.

“We wanted the boys to attend a small country school because we believe smaller towns offer more of a sense of community. Now the boys have left home it was the natural progression for us to move location.”

The couple purchased a property with an old kauri villa which is approximately 109 years old.

“It is beautiful and has kauri floors and ceilings, and stained glass doors.

When you look into the polished ceiling you can see the old band saw work and you think ‘a guy milled this all those years ago’.

“We are members of both the Dargaville and Mangawhai arts associations. The art group here in Dargaville is a great group to be a part of — they have a lot of things going on and their lovely new gallery on Hokianga Road is gorgeous.

We will be closed from Saturday the 24th of December and reopening the 4th January.

Come and enjoy the New Year sun on our new deck area — the perfect setting this summer.

The Dargaville Arts Association began six years ago with the idea of creating a setting where fellow artists could come together as a community.

The group first opened the Muddy Waters Gallery at the Central Hotel in Dargaville and later moved to premises in Parenga Street.

Their third and final move recently is to the historic Municipal building in Hokianga Road, creating the Dargaville

Community Art Centre which now includes the Muddy Waters Gallery.

work in and the visitors love it. It sits well with the artistic audience,” says workshop manager Heather Carrigan.

“The new premises has broadened the scope of people who are accessing the gallery. We ran our first workshops in November and people who attended are continuing to use the different skills they were taught. We are still getting positive feedback.”

Heather says there is an overwhelming amount of talent in the area and a very high standard of art.

“We get a lot of comments from people visiting saying that the quality of the art here in the Kaipara is equal if not better to the larger cities like Wellington and Auckland. The only difference is the price here is fantastic in comparison.” The community centre is made up of a broad range of artists

using many different mediums and covering most genres of art and crafts.

There is a variety of 2D and 3D art, a range of jewellery and blank cards for all occasions.

“We are not just a gift shop, we are a working studio and we are on the cusp of very exciting times.

“You can see a cross section of ages and cultures at the gallery. We are in a very positive time with so much to look forward to.

“The people who initiated the groundwork for the association have laid foundations of dreams and aspirations that we can do with in the broader community. Anyone can join the association, and can come and discover what they may enjoy. We have workshops planned for February, March and April.” ¢

The group also assisted with arranging a feasibility study for a proposed retirement village as well as collaborating with Northland Inc about business growth and innovation.

Kaipara Community Health Trust

Kaipara District Council invite expressions of interest to fill two trustee vacancies for the Kaipara Community Health Trust (KCHT).

KCHT has the objective to ensure there are health services available locally for people in our community to access. The Trust has been highly effective over the last 21 years in protecting and enhancing the services available on the Dargaville Hospital site. The new Trustees will be able to build on this legacy by advocating on behalf of all Kaipara communities and ensuring through good governance that the Trusts current assets are well managed for current and future community needs.

Council are seeking to appoint two Trustees from residents residing in the historic Central and West Coast wards. They would join other members of the Trust in quarterly meetings of the Trustees and other subcommittee meetings as required. These are unpaid voluntary appointments who are eligible for reimbursement of some travel expenses.

Expressions of interest are invited from interested people who are passionate about the provision of health services locally. Since graduating she has worked in Tenancy Services in Hamilton and immigration in Auckland but was looking for a small firm to practise in where she could use her degree to its full potential.

“I just really wanted to work as a lawyer. I’ve always wanted to work in a smaller team because you get so much more collegial support,” she said.

Another year is almost at an end and, from a Kaipara perspective, a year that has seen us return to democracy. Your Councillors have been very active with a lot of days spent learning about the workings of Council and our district. A big thank you to those groups who have taken the time to come and present or talk to us.

The population of the area will increase by approximately 60% over the holiday period which demonstrates how “peaky” the needs of that community are. In the New Year the group working on the Town Plan will present a draft to us. This will be a process all residents will need to participate in.

The New Year will see a change in focus.

We will spend time considering what we would like to do in the various communities, obviously in our case within our financial constraints.

Annual Plan We are now a number of months into the financial year and at this time are running better than budget. Some of this is timing with the very wet late spring period holding up some roading work but some is that costs are lower than predicted. The budget the Commissioners left us had a very small operating surplus of $200,000, which would effectively reduce debt. We would aim to do better than that.

Roading This area has been a big learning curve for me and I suspect all new Councillors. Our roading is paid for jointly by ourselves (40%) and the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), (60%).

This funding structure is a real motivator to spend on roading and of course roading is our single biggest cost centre by far. NZTA funding is contingent on them accepting what we are proposing to do. It is also contingent on getting quotes for the work including our 40%. That makes it close to impossible to employ, directly our own, roading people and that is why all roading work is contracted. If we employed for example our own grader drivers we could be in a situation of missing a tender but still carry their overhead.

At our last Council meeting we approved the upgrade of the small freshwater reticulation system Council operates for a cost of $275,000 Kai Iwi Lakes Likewise a large lift in people here. NRC has recently installed buoys as ski lanes on Lake Taharoa which should make the situation safer. To those users of the lake please check for any weeds etcetera on your boat hull before launching.

Kauri Coast Community Pool in Dargaville Late January the Chief Executive and I will meet with the Trustees of the pool. We will explore opportunities for its future.

Currently it costs around $250,000 per annum to operate. This figure does not include depreciation which, as we know, one will eventually need to spend. In the interim Council will be aiming to get a better understanding of profile of those who use the facility.

A special museum invitation A Christmas present awaits Kaipara residents visiting the Dargaville Museum over the holidays, with half-price admission for adults and senior citizens, while those under 18 will get in free.

Museum manager, Andrea Hemmins says proof of residence by way of a utilities bill will give discounts from the normal $15 admission, between December 20 and January 30 inclusive, with adults paying just $7.50 and seniors $6.

“We will be open from 9am to 5pm, but closed on Christmas Day. For visitors to the Kaipara, we have a wide-ranging research resource for people interested in their local history,” she said.

“Another popular display is our first world war exhibit, with Dargaville and the surrounding district providing a disproportionate number of servicemen per capita who served in the conflict.”

Dargaville Library manager Lisa Salter said she was pleased to be able to return the Bible to its original home.

“Now that the Bible is significantly older than when it was originally donated and, recognising that we don’t have adequate storage to preserve the condition of it, we decided to offer it back to the church. They have gladly accepted the offer.”

The Holy Bible contains both the old and new testament and was donated to the Dargaville Free Library by the Anglican church in 1925.

The book was most likely to have been part of the library’s reference collection before going into storage.

It was published by William Collins Publishers and contains a commentary

by Henry Scott.

“We had a rare books expert come and look at our collection. We expected we had some things of value in storage and we wanted to make good decisions about the future of them,” said Ms Salter.

“Before we decided what we were going to do with the Bible we needed to

Dan and Gina Duncan with two-year-old Lachlan moved from Tokoroa to Pouto earlier this year to take up a sharemilking position on the Pouto Topu A Trust dairy farms in a move toward a better future.

“We moved on June 1 and we are really enjoying the area. We were dairy farming but contract milking and we wanted to move to the next level, and this opportunity came up,” said Gina.

“We came to the open day to see the farm, but before then I had never been north of Auckland and it was a nice little excursion for me, to say the very least.”

Dan and Gina say the trust and the local community have been very supportive and have made them comfortable and happy with where they are at.

“The farm borders the Kaipara Harbour and we are lucky to have somewhat private beaches. As a farmer you work really hard, and on our time off we love having the harbour on our doorstep.

“The people here in Pouto are an amazing community. When we moved we were running late, but a few of the locals spotted the furniture truck and unloaded

Motivated by the desire to help people give gifts they are proud of, Katie Gray nee Douglas has returned to her home town of Dargaville in search of a better lifestyle, and has started her own online business.

Katie studied a Bachelors of Commerce at Otago University majoring in marketing and graduated with first class honours. She was awarded a scholarship with L’Oreal which included a job after graduation where she stayed for two-and-a-half years.

Katie and her husband Andy then worked together on Superyachts for three years before moving back to New Zealand.

“It was an amazing experience but it is a very transient lifestyle and we missed family and friends,” she said.

Katie went on to work in marketing for multi million dollar companies such as Moa beer and Ecoya in Auckland for several years before tiring of the fast paced city lifestyle and moving to Baylys Beach.

“We were done with the Auckland lifestyle and made the decision to move up here which was easy for my husband who is in real estate and can work anywhere.

“It was a little more difficult for me to find work in my field. There was nothing equivalent up here but I’d always wanted to start my own business.”

When health problems arise, quick access to the right services are paramount — the ability to see a doctor even on the weekend, and pharmacy access to pick up medications. These services can help you on the road to a speedy recovery.

Living in the Northern Wairoa means you have access to these services, and with enrolment at the Dargaville Medical Centre it will cost you $18 to see one of the 14 doctors on staff, supported by nurses and a strong administration team.

At the centre, the medical diagnosis and treatment is supported by digital radiology, physiotherapy, specialist nurses diabetes management, and an onsite laboratory that processes blood tests with a turnaround time of approximately four hours for standard tests.

On site you’ll also find a Regional Detox Unit, Mental Health Services, Alcohol and Drugs Counselling, Allied Health, Sexual Health Clinics, Maternity Clinics, and regular visits from specialists in paediatrics, surgery, gynecology, as well as diabetes, dieticians, cardiologists, and orthopaedic surgeons. The Mobile Services Surgical Bus visits every six to eight weeks.

The Dargaville Hospital is based in this same red brick building — the ‘healthcare centre on the hill’ boasting 12 inpatient beds with highly-skilled Rural Hospital Specialist doctors and nurses.

The Kowhai Room provides a large comfortable room where family can support their loved ones.

Technology has been introduced that supports patients and medical staff and

often some patients can sit in Dargaville and have a consultation with a specialist in Whangarei.

The Dargaville doctors can link-up in real time to Whangarei Hospital and seek further advice. Some of this technology has been bought with generous donations from the community, enabling the Hospital Gold Start Wishlist to become a reality.

Kaipara District has strong volunteer fire brigades, and with volunteers at St John Ambulance, provide a first response service to all accidents.

In an emergency, the NEST Helicopter can be on site to transport patients to main centre medical facilities.

The community is in a favoured position in Dargaville with the Kaipara Community Health Trust owning 46% of the Total Health Care Centre.

KCHT is entrusted with being the guardians of local health services, and its role is to enhance and retain services and ensure our hospital building is well-maintained.

KCHT also provides a Health Shuttle Service.

One of his murals was displayed at the Commonwealth Games Village and later at Auckland Airport.

The exhibition is an opportunity to see Mangawhai expressed and interpreted in his, art as well as interwoven with the story of his life.

Small wonder then, that one of the most important buildings to be raised in early Dargaville was a spacious tavern, where the hard-working traders, foresters and sailors could enjoy a pint or two. The Northern Wairoa Hotel is one of three such establishments which served those early settlers, and though the original old wooden public house was replaced after fire damage in the early 20th century, its replacement still stands.

Owner and publican Darryl is proud of his majestic old tavern, which he has lavished with plenty of attention over the past year. As one would expect with a building of such character and vintage, a lot of TLC has been needed to really make the Northern Wairoa Hotel shine again as a hub for entertainment and dining. Re-flooring the ballroom, for example, to make way for a restaurant and concert area, was a task that also meant replacing and smoothing out near century-old floorboards. A new bar room has been panelled in timber to create an old-time look, as has the sports bar and TAB. Meanwhile, a new darts area has been constructed to bring back one of the famous old tavern games

Lawrie Stevens and Dawn Folkard are both new residents of the Kaipara district and have gone into business together providing clean, traceable food to Northlanders from their mobile food stall Street Fodder.

Originally Lawrie hails from London and moved to Paparoa with his wife Hanna and their two young children two years ago, whilst Dawn and her partner Craig shifted for a lifestyle change from Auckland to Matakohe at the beginning of this year.

Lawrie and Dawn soon discovered they had a shared interest in clean eating and Street Fodder was born.

“We decided as foodies we would start up a clean food stall offering tasty gluten free products without the sugar, additives and preservatives that you see in most mobile food stalls,” says Lawrie.

Lawrie has a finance background but was always passionate about food and says the move to Paparoa has been liberating and fun.

“Everyone around here is lovely and have made us feel welcome.
