 Staff of the Dargaville ASB held a bake sale with a sausage sizzle which raised $280 for the local St John Ambulance service. St John staff and volunteers were on deck selling new toy ambulance building blocks which have been available from ASB banks as part of a fundraiser to buy a new ambulance for the service across the country. “The toy ambulances have over 100 pieces and are a great gift for children. They have been very popular and are a great way to support the cause. It was a very successful day,” said ASB senior customer service officer Serena Carran.

Some Lion members put on a skit called ‘First Date at the Movies,’ Santa visited and Jone Yelcich and friends sang a song about life in Ruawai in the old days. This occasion was a great opportunity for old friends to meet and socialise. Ruawai Lions are grateful for financial assistance from a Lottery Board Community grant that enabled them to hold the event.

Carts venture takes off

A new tourism venture is ready to roll, and set to bring more tourists to the Kaipara, as three years of preparations and negotiations finally come to fruition.

Three generations of the Webb family gathered at the Arapohue Bowling Club on December 2, marking a special occasion — the 50th anniversary of the Webb Memorial Pairs.

 A group of supporters celebrate the Rail Cart dream becoming a reality

Dargaville Rail and River, the brainchild of riverboat ‘Daisy’ operator John Hansen and business partner Dave Selby, officially opened on December 12 and offers people the chance to see the rail tracks from Dargaville to Tangowahine in a way they have never been seen before.

“Hopefully it will bring new people into the area. It will be great to see them enjoying the drive and doing something different,” says Mr Hansen.

“It will give users a completely unique perspective of the area to what they would normally see from the road.”

After years of planning and organising, he says it feels good to finally have everything in place.

The pair have leased the lines and obtained a rail licence which is required to run anything on the line.

He says patrons should allow for up to three hours return to cover the 15 kilometre stretch on the carts which travel at 25 kilometres an hour.

After a rail inspection the tracks are deemed up to standard and ‘fit for purpose.’

The rail carts sit four people and the driver must have a full driver’s licence.

The trail will follow a lead car which can communicate with other carts via radio.

Tourists will be treated to a history lesson about the rail lines and Mr Hansen says he hopes the venture will encourage visitors to stay longer in Dargaville.

“Hopefully they will stay overnight at a hotel or motel which will create a spin off for other businesses.”

There has already been a significant amount of interest and they have been taking bookings long before the lines opened.

“We are hoping people will come from out of town specifically to do this, especially train buffs.”

Mangawhai and its Harbour The Mangawhai Museum is a new and modern museum that celebrates life around our harbour. Wonderful collection of graphics, displays and videos. So allow plenty of time!

The trophy is a memorial to George Webb who was a founding member of the club.

Later in life when his brother Karl died the trophy was dedicated to both men.

Twenty–eight teams travelled from as far away as Kerikeri and Coromandel for the competition which club member Viv Webb says has always had strong support from clubs everywhere.

“It was a very successful day and it was nice to have the family coming from afar to take part in the event,” Viv said. George’s 91–year-old son

Bill Webb was also able to celebrate the memorial’s anniversary and only stopped playing in this tournament one year ago.

A passion for bowls runs in the Webb family and Karl’s grandson Rhys Webb travelled from Perth to participate, whilst George’s great-grandson Bevan visited from Christchurch.

The trophy was won by ex Arapohue member Kevin Gainfort of Te Puru, Coromandel and Sandy Foy of Arapohue.

“We hope to continue the tradition on for many more years,” said Viv. 

Biotoxin shellfish warning  by Ayla Miller

The Northland District Health Board Public Health Unit have issued a public health warning, urging the people not to collect or eat shellfish from between, and including, Mitimiti north of the Hokianga harbour, to Pouto at the entrance to Kaipara harbour.

Shellfish collected within the area have shown the presence of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxins, above the regulatory level. The symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning include numbness and tingling around the mouth, face or extremities, difficulty in swallowing or breathing, dizziness and double vision.

In severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure can occur within 12 hours of consuming shellfish.

“Cooking the shellfish does not remove the toxin. Anyone who becomes ill after eating shellfish should see a doctor or phone Healthline for advice on 0800 61 11 16. For emergencies, phone 111 for immediate medical help,” says Northland district health board medical officer Dr Clair Mills.

“There is a regular monitoring programme along the coastline in New Zealand that is managed by the Ministry of Primary Industries.

There are trigger levels in the water that we use to determine what is happening.” When the trigger level is elevated a warning is issued as

shellfish concentrate the toxins.

“They filter water at large volumes so that is why they are the most unsafe thing to eat when there are toxins around.”

Dr Mills also reminds people to be careful of shellfish they may have collected in the last week and put in the freezer.

“It takes a few days for the test results to come through. We did have a slightly elevated trigger already in the first week of December so it is important that people are aware of that.”

Similar cases have typically lasted a couple of weeks and sometimes longer depending on the weather and the tides.

Northland District Health Board will monitor the situation and advise of any changes.

A group of 22 South American visitors stayed at the Commercial Hotel bed and breakfast in Dargaville recently as part of a joint programme with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, learning how New Zealand dairy farmers get good production from their cows.

 The group of Colombian farmers interacted with the a group of local singers whilst staying at the Commercial Hotel on their farming expedition to New Zealand

“It is a four year project targeting small to medium dairy farmers in the high tropics of Colombia — South America aiming to improve their productivity and quality of milk on farms for a better standard of living and helping make the country more self sufficient,” said host Maria Duter.

The group visited the Northland Agricultural Research Farm in Dargaville to see how New Zealand farming is similar to theirs. Due to the high altitude where they come from, the grass that grows there is Kikuyu — Pennisetum clandestinum, which is also widely spread across Northland.

“It was a great day out with them on the farm and it was a huge learning experience for them to see how we manage our pasture. They really enjoyed learning how it’s possible to manage a Kikuyu system and were looking forward to taking back some of our practices

Ms Duter said there are many experts across different areas of farming in New Zealand sharing their knowledge in all areas of farm systems from business to feed growth, cheesemaking and marketing.

“A farm over there can consist of five cows, the average is two or three. The farms are like 1920’s New Zealand, they are still milking by hand. This project is to help them adopt improved practises and the end result will be profitable with the local community benefitting.

“The farmers work very hard to leave a legacy for the generations to come and the information our country is giving them is very practical in helping them achieve better results.

“It was great visiting Northland, they had a really good time here and learnt lots of valuable information,” she said. 

After three years of negotiations and renovations, Mangawhai Artists Inc now have a home to call their own. The building which was originally the museum in Mangawhai village now proudly displays local artworks.

“We have repainted the exterior to fit in with the surroundings — the library and village hall. It has been lined and painted and we are ready to kick off and officially open to the public on on Saturday December 19,” said committee member Cliff McPherson.

The group of 103 members have been proactive in promoting and providing their own sense of ownership of the project and a good number have been getting together and had many working bees and scrubbed, painted and renovated to get it all ready. He says the community have started to take note of the changes and are appreciating that the building has a new life.

“I have lived in Mangawhai for over ten years and have seen many changes.

There is quite a buzz around here

and the market which happens to be outside our building makes the whole atmosphere very vibrant.

“The gallery is opening with an exhibition of small works by members of the group and will have a real sense of unity as each small work is the same size. This can be a challenge to some artists but it also drives your creative sense of experimentation and adventure.”

This is the first time Mangawhai artists will have their own space and throughout the year there will be group and private exhibitions on display.

“It will be operated on a volunteer basis and we are very excited. This is absolutely great for Mangawhai. We have turned a bit of an ugly duckling into a beautiful gallery.” 

Festive birthday celebrations for museum

A sold-out gathering of supporters and residents enjoyed an afternoon of bubbles, baubles and song to celebrate the Mangawhai Museum’s first full year of operation.

The votes are in, the donations counted and long serving Dargaville Volunteer Fireman Gary Murdoch has won over the people of Dargaville, awarding him the prestigious title of Dargaville Person of the Year 2015.

The bubbles were used to toast not only the success of the first year but also to drink to the success of the museum into the future.

The baubles were amongst display of mostly handcrafted Christmas decorations made by locals and there were promises of something special planned for next year.

“The museum’s first year of operations has been successful with many groups booking their outings with us and our in house cafe, Jessie’s.

Next year we are hoping to become more involved with the local schools as we are in the process of setting up a

Dargaville Person of the Year creator Erica Tebbutt says, “Gary is a very deserving recipient of the title this year. Everyone has recently celebrated his 50 years with the Dargaville Fire Brigade and this is a brilliant way to acknowledge his amazing contribution to our community.

“He is a great leader that sets a great example to all of us. As Gary represented the Dargaville Fire brigade, they will receive the profits from the event which will be presented next week.

“The total amount raised will be $300.” A cheque of $300 will go to the

wonderful education programme,” said museum manager Emma Gray.

Society president, Christine Bygrave acknowledged Emma’s work in her address and thanked all the volunteers without whom the Museum could not operate.

The year saw the first special exhibition which highlighted the sinking of the Niagara. More exhibitions of this type are planned with the next one due early next year.

Plans for Mangawhai Park and the Historical Village continue to take shape forming an attraction that is hoped to benefit Mangawhai as a whole. 

“Gary is very humble and a great character. We really appreciate all he does and even though he’s accomplished 50 years of service, he still keeps coming to the station and we like that,” said chief fire officer Jeffrey Palmer.

“He is generally an all round good character and fully deserves this award, he is really well known around the community, not just with the fire brigade but with many community organisations. It is a pleasure working with him.” 

The Horseshoe Cafe, Takeaway and Dairy owner Jolene Morris, is lighting up Hokianga Road with her extensive Christmas lights display.

Jolene decided to decorate her store last Christmas and has now expanded her collection.

“This year I’ve added a lot more lights. They are all over the front of the shop and inside the windows as well.”

She says her motivation came from enjoying the lights herself but mostly does it for the kids.

“I enjoy people coming to admire them. I don’t do much for Christmas because I don’t get to have a holiday, so putting the lights up is my thing.”

She typically starts her display on December 1, although she says it took her a little longer this year due to sheer quantity.

“I’ve had lots of people coming in and commenting on them.

The Dargaville Cake Decorators Club joined together to spread happiness and Christmas cheer by donating handmade and decorated cakes to the community and help give a boost to the food parcels which will be given out by the local foodbank.

A trailer load of Christmas joy was delivered to Kaipara Abuse Prevention by the Kaipara District Council, in the form of gifts for less fortunate families, donated by the community and council staff members.

 The sun was out and so were the crowds as the streets of Ruawai were lined with colourful and creative floats for the town’s annual Christmas parade. Here Ruawai JMB Rugby players greet their supporters in the parade of 17 floats. Taking the lead was the fire van and police with Santa bringing up the rear in the fire engine. Northash Farms Ltd was awarded the prize for the best float which came complete with farm dog, children decked out in farm safety gear and a green tyre Christmas tree.

Kaipara Abuse Prevention manager Simone Matthews says the act of generosity has been ‘humbling’.

“In this industry we are often asking for support and funding so it has been great to be chosen in this instance,” she said.

“It is a reflection of the great work that KAP have done over the years and indicates that we have been raising our profile.”

Kaipara Health Services Community Update Northland DHB and Dargaville Medical Centre announced new joint arrangements for healthcare in the Kaipara that commenced on 1 October. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers, for your information.

DOES DARGAVILLE HOSPITAL HAVE AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT? Dargaville Hospital does not have an emergency department. If you are very unwell, require complex investigations such as CT scan and/or specialist input you will be transferred to Whangarei Hospital regardless of the hour of day.

ARE THE SERVICES AT DARGAVILLE HOSPITAL BEING REDUCED? No. Dargaville Medical Centre has struggled in recent years to recruit GPs who are willing to work after-hours and be on-call to the hospital. Dargaville Medical Centre has notified Northland DHB that it is no longer able to provide the day-to-day and overnight care of Dargaville Hospital.

Northland DHB agreed to take back responsibility for medical staffing at Dargaville Hospital so the community can be reassured that all services will now be sustainable.

The Northland DHB Dargaville Hospital contract started on 1 October.

The new model is actually an increase in service because there will now be a dedicated hospital doctor available in addition to the current GP on call and it will provide a sustainable hospital model rather that the existing system which has been shown to be unsustainable.

The DHB and Dargaville Medical Centre are committed to the people of the Kaipara. With Northland DHB agreeing to take back responsibility for medical staffing at Dargaville Hospital the community can be reassured that all service will now be sustainable. The Northland DHB Dargaville Hospital contract started on 1 October.

WHEN CAN I SEE A DOCTOR AFTER-HOURS? As well as their normal Monday to Friday GP clinics, Dargaville Medical Centre will continue a three-hour clinic on Saturdays and Sundays and retain the 24/7 after-hours GP service. The first point of contact of all health concerns during the day or after-hours will remain through Dargaville Medical Centre on 09 439 8079 where you will be put through to the triage nurse.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY CHANGING? Admission to Dargaville Hospital will occur as usual between the hours of 7am and 10pm. After 10pm all patients requiring admission will be transferred to Whangarei. There will still be a GP on call for healthcare provided in the community, usually from a GP or practice nurse. There is also a doctor on call for the hospital inpatients and any emergencies that require stabilisation prior to transfer to Whangarei.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT LOCAL STAFFING? WILL ANY JOBS BE LOST? The DHB is committed to ensuring safe staffing levels at Dargaville Hospital which will create some extra employment in the area. In order to protect the medical staff from professional isolation it is likely that the Medical Officers will undertake some duties in other Rural Sites, not work exclusively in Dargaville.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO SEE A DOCTOR AFTER-HOURS? There will still be a charge for seeing a GP after-hours. If a patient is picked up at home and taken directly to Dargaville or Whangarei Hospital and sees the hospital doctor there will no doctor charge.

If you call an ambulance from your home the standard ambulance charge will apply. If you are a member of the St John Supporter scheme then emergency ambulance transport to hospital is free.

WHAT IMPACT HAS THIS HAD ON DARGAVILLE ST JOHN AMBULANCE? St John Ambulance, the Northland DHB and Dargaville Medical Centre continue to work closely together as the new model evolves. Regular meetings focus on addressing issues resulting from these changes as they arise. Our priority is to ensure patient safety and the delivery of a patient-centred service.

For unwell, unstable or marginally sick patients ambulance officers are able to contact the ‘On Call GP’ for support within the Dargaville community.

There has been no change to the care we provide in the case of time critical and seriously unstable patients. The hospital doctor is available on call to assist with emergency stabilisation at the Dargaville hospital prior to transfer to Whangarei.

There is also no change for patients located outside the immediate Dargaville township area, ambulance crews are able to call on ambulance advanced life support teams, either by road ambulance or via the rescue helicopter, to assist with stabilising and transporting time critical patients to Whangarei Hospital.

There has been an increase in the average drive time for incidents between 10.00pm and 7.00am. This increase potentially exposes the Dargaville area to longer periods with limited local ambulance cover.

However, since 1 October there has been on average one transfer per week directly from the Dargaville community to Whangarei Hospital, between 10.00pm and 7.00am which is less than the one transfer every three days we had estimated.

It should be noted that had these patients been transported directly to Dargaville Hospital several would potentially have required subsequent transfer by ambulance to Whangarei Hospital.

Every effort is made to have fully-crewed ambulances available. In the event that an unstable patient requires urgent transfer and there is only a single ambulance officer available, Dargaville Hospital has undertaken to release a nurse to ride with and support the patient on route to Whangarei Hospital.

Some instances have been reported where patients have refused transport once they realise it means they will be taken directly to Whangarei instead of Dargaville Hospital. While patients have the right to refuse transport, they must realise this places ambulance crews in a very difficult situation, especially if St John has already provided treatment that they may need to monitor.

Ambulance officers always aim to act in the patients best interests. If their advice is to go to hospital, or as an alternate, be seen by the “On Call” GP, then we strongly advise patients to do so. Failure to do this not only place’s the patient’s health at risk, but also increases stress levels for the ambulance officers as their protocols focus on the best care (and destination) for their patients.

In December St John will be providing their 111 Clinical Hub service in Northland which helps connect patients to the right care at the right time. Non-urgent (not serious or immediately life threatening) issues can often be managed faster which is better for the patient and also frees up ambulance resources to focus on the urgent and life threatening incidents.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR THE LOCAL KAIPARA COMMUNITY? The local community is benefiting by having dedicated hospital specialists and senior medical officers providing their hospital care. These doctors are also available to assist in emergencies which will increase the emergency response capacity in the region. These doctors are employed by Northland DHB which increases the pool of medical staff who are available to provide cover in Dargaville making the roster more sustainable and safer.

Remember, if you are feeling unwell please try and seek medical attention as early as possible so that medical staff can provide the care you need in a timely manner, and help prevent you getting worse.
