A new solar farm comprising 20,000 photovoltaic panels will rise at the Access Road site under the new name Te Puna Mauri ō Omaru. Translated, this means ‘the energy source of the people of Omaru’, the historical name for this farmland to the north of the Ruawai township. Plantings were made of saplings from nearby Naumai Marae, signifying a link of community spirit, and a blessing was enacted to ensure that work during 2024 will be swift and safe. It is Northpower’s first self-built solar farm and the biggest in the area to date.

Following KDC’s decision to approve a plan change necessary to allow the ambitious project to proceed, the public had the right to appeal through the Environment Court. One such appeal was forthcoming, made by the Te Raranga a Te Kuihi Trust. It must be heard and worked through if the development proceeds any further. “Procedurally, what will happen next is the Environment Court will appoint an environment commissioner to lead the court-assisted mediation,” said
KDC general manager Michael Day. The Environment Court will also set down the mediation date. Additionally, council CEO Jason Marris has been delegated to attend court-assisted mediation on behalf of the KDC and represent the council’s position during any such mediation. Mr Day said in his report to councillors the date for mediation will most likely be in early 2024. ¢
