Kaipara locals took away four wins at the 2017 Conbrio Northland Sports Awards recently.

The Dudley and Dennis team of the year went to the Maungaturoto men’s triples lawn bowls team, made up of David Eades, Kevin Robinson and Wayne Wrack. Their achievements this year include winning seven gold and five world titles between them at the World Masters, and winning the New Zealand men’s triples title, making them the first players in the 91-year history of the Northland Bowling Centre, to win a national award. Wayne Wrack also won the code award for lawn bowls.

“It was a magnificent evening. I’m quite in awe of what I’ve achieved, because when you get to my age, and it’s taken me 43 years to achieve something that no one in the history of Northland has achieved, you wonder what’s happening. We just kept winning this year, which is hard case really,” said Wayne Wrack.

The Pacific Motor Group official of the year went to Dargaville swimming official, Carlrine Gillespie.

Her achievements include being the international technical official at the FINA World Swimming Champs and a New Zealand delegate at the FINA Technical Congress Swimming, both in Budapest this year. She also holds a World Para Swimming level four technical official qualification, making her the only swim official in the country to have one.

Lisa Zwaans, also from Dargaville, won a code award for archery. Her achievements this year include winning four gold medals at the World Masters, being the top adult female in the unlimited section at the New Zealand Field Archery Association competition, and receiving a bronze medal at the World Bowhunter Champs in Italy. ¢

A warning to not collect or eat shellfish has been placed by the Northland District Health Board which stretches along the West Coast from Taranaki to the Hokianga Harbour through to Tauroa Reef Point.

The warning was prompted after shellfish collected within the area showed levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxins, significantly above the regulatory level.

Symptoms of PSP include: numbness and tingling around the mouth, face or extremities; difficulty in swallowing or breathing, dizziness and double vision.

In severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure can occur within 12 hours of consuming shellfish.

“Cooking the shellfish does not remove the toxin” said medical officer of health at the Northland DHB, Dr Jose Ortega Benito.

“Anyone who becomes ill after eating shellfish should see a doctor or phone Healthline for advice on 0800 611 116. For emergencies, phone 111 for immediate medical help.”

The Kaipara District Council is to refresh its Significance and Engagement policy which encompasses how it makes decisions while taking public expectations into account.

p It’s been a busy festive season already, with things set to kick into high gear as December 25th approaches! Adding to the yuletide cheer is a big win for one local shopper — the winner of our annual Christmas Shop and Win draw. This year’s winner takes home $500 from Dargaville Honda Motorcycles — a big ‘congratulations’ to Mr Ross Friedrich from both their team and ours.

The draft policy outlines what the council will take into account when deciding what is significant and when the community will have a direct opportunity to contribute to decision making.

“In short — we want to have the right conversations with the right people about the right issues before making significant decisions,” said acting communications manager Benjamin Hope.

This would include the 10 Year Plan and Annual Plan and decisions that might change an expected service or something that will add cost to the ratepayer. “The policy

guides our assessment of whether an issue or proposal is important to the community. NOTE FOR DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS Between November and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. This introduces fresh aggregate into the failure, in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. Mark and Pam Ottoway’s Christmas spirit shines through the township of Kaiwaka each year with their impressive Christmas and light display.

What started with a few strings of lights has evolved over the last 30 years the couple have been decorating their house and front lawn to the joy of passersby and locals on SH1.

“As we’ve gone on it’s grown over time. It takes about three weeks to set up and then I keep adding to it,” says Mark.

He says the regulars know straight away which displays have changed and what’s new.

“On a weekend we’re always packed, it’s a constant stream. Everybody comes and has a chat and there’s always people who come along that we haven’t caught up with for ages.”

The Ottoways ask for a small donation to explore the property which showcases blow-up figurines, lights, a snow machine and an ornamental display.

Every cent is then donated to the Kaiwaka Fire Brigade which both Pam and Mark’s families have been heavily involved with for generations.

Last year they made over $3,000 and they’re hoping to target that amount

Kings School of Dance is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the annual end of year recital taking place in the Dargaville Town Hall on December 17.

Keep an eye out for chicks You never know where and when a kiwi will show up.

Many people think kiwi live in the forest only but that is not always the case.

I recently received a female kiwi that was hit with a weed-eater that had the steel blade. A guy was clearing long grass from a fence line when suddenly, bang, a kiwi rolled out.

I had photos of her that I put on Facebook so you can see the damage. This kiwi should be called lucky as she had four big gashes - two on one side and two on the other.

Bruce the vet cleaned her up and sutured all the wounds, by which time she looked like an old pair of socks with thread all over the place.

She is now walking around inside her brood box and looks like she will make a full recovery.

From now until the end of January is when many of native birds have their young. However, the better weather is when people start cutting down trees and cleaning up ready for summer.

If you find a nest or chicks don’t feed them. Contact us and we will advise you what to do. Also, never put water in with baby birds as they get wet and end up with pneumonia. Just keep them warm until you can get them to the Centre.

Also, remember when cutting tall trees near powerlines to first give Northpower a call on 0800 10 40 40 to make sure it’s safe to cut the tree down.

Some years ago, I wanted to cut a big Rimu tree down that had died. I had the chainsaw, hard hat and gloves but not the right gear for climbing up ten metres, so I got someone else to do the job safely.

From now until the end of summer we are very busy at the Recovery Centre, so if you come for a visit and no one is around, it maybe that we are out picking up birds.

Remember, birds can be left at the Centre in the cages on the deck. Write your contact number on the whiteboard so we can let you know how the bird is getting on and find out where to return the bird once it is recovered.

The Aratapu-based school was started by dancer and ex-primary school teacher Sonja King, who’s seen generations of children come through and learn classical ballet, United Kingdom tap style, jazz style and stage hiphop.

This year a student who performed in the 1997 recital, will see her daughter dance to the same song, I’m Wishing from Snow White, as this year’s theme is ‘A Rendition of the Past’.

“When I first started the school I didn’t think I would still be going in 20 years. I’m very excited and thrilled,” said Sonja.

“The love of teaching and being able to provide an opportunity to children who have a passion for dance has kept me going. Seeing their faces and how much they enjoy and get out of it — that’s the main thing for me.”

Eleven year old April Morris has taken jazz and ballet classes for four years.

“It’s just really fun, a way to exercise, it’s also relaxing sometimes and Miss

The recital is on Sunday, December 17. Doors open at 1pm and the

Kaipara filmmaker Moemoea Mohoawhenua has spent the last year and a half writing his third feature film called Te Toa… The Warrior and he’s keen to get a local team together to bring it to life.

“Anyone who is passionate about filmmaking and wants to be involved, whether they have experience or not, is welcome,” he said.

“In a nutshell, Te Toa…The Warrior is about a brutal Maori dictator who has taken control of Aotearoa. A Maori warrior arises to give the people hope and to try and lead them to freedom.”

It has supernatural and spiritual elements and is primarily in English,

with waiata and karakia in Maori.

He plans to start filming in April 2018, with locations set to be Omamari beach, Waipoua Forest and Mohoa, near Mamaranui. Some roles are specifically Maori but Moemoea said he’s open to considering anyone who wants to audition. “I make my movies guerrilla style, using whatever resources, equipment and personnel I have — and for me as a director I always try make

The annual Mangawhai Bows and Bells ‘inspiration for Christmas tour’ has delighted viewers, with the decorated homes and buildings on show raising $7,500.

Good citizen awards are usually reserved for people making a valued community contribution, but there’s now a Kaipara canine with a row of ‘good citizen’ award ribbons.

Organiser Gaylene Lawrence said the tour, which was held over two days and seven buildings, went well with many of the decorations “greatly admired.

Returning the old Tara Road School and church in the Pioneer Village to their former glory was wonderful and there were lots of favourable comments.”

Christmas themes throughout the various locations included a ‘forest of Christmas trees’ to a ‘tropical

Christmas’, which used a pineapple at the top of the tree instead of the traditional star.

During the tour the Mangawhai Museum also featured three Christmas trees in the shape of ball gowns, which were curated from chicken wire frames and extensively decorated for the event.

“We had a fun weekend and raised a bit over $7,500 so are very pleased with that.” ¢

Border Collie, Cooper, belongs to Laurel Greaves and they have recently returned from a series of qualification courses in Auckland, where the New Zealand Kennel Club is holding classes to encourage pet dogs "to be well mannered and behave themselves.

"We've attended four assessments in Auckland, each lasting four hours, so it was pretty intense. We were both

exhausted at the end of it, but Cooper now has a total of four ribbons to show for it; Foundation, Bronze, Silver and now Gold," said Laurel.

"Cooper is now registered with the NZKC by his show name, Trastamara Cooper, CGCG — which stands for Canine Good Citizen Gold. He's been taking it all in his stride — just looking forward to the odd extra treat at Christmas I suppose."

Dargaville Silver Fern Farms decided to open up their annual staff Christmas day to the whole community this year. All were invited to join them at the Kauri Coast Community Pool in Dargaville, after the Christmas parade on Saturday.

Silver Fern Farms paid for the entry, free food, and ice blocks for the children. Spot prizes and live music were also provided.

Plant manager Lance Warmington said he put the idea forward last year but it didn’t quite happen. “We had some of the public rock up anyway and we just ended up feeding them as well, so that was the catalyst for the committee to think, it could work. “We are a big part of the community and we realise a lot

of our staff have wider family so we just thought, let’s share the love a little bit further.

“Having grown up here, then going away and coming back, I’m different from previous plants managers in that I’ve got a blood link, so that to me is quite important. Especially with youth employment and sustainability for the wider community. One of our pillars at Silver Fern Farms is to support the community.” ¢

The Dargaville Business Forum have brought two initiatives to town this December. One is a shop front Christmas lights competition and the other is encouraging shops to open late on Friday nights.

Around nine businesses have jumped on board, making Dargaville’s main street twinkle with Christmas cheer at night. There are prizes for the best display, judged by the Business Forum and the public, with people’s choice award voting slips in all participating shops. Winners be announced on Tuesday, December 19.

Until 5–6pm on the Friday nights before Christmas, many shops are staying open, with entertainment and sausage sizzles also planned on those evenings.

The last two extended hours evenings are on the 15th and 22nd.

So far Circus Kumarani will be there on the 15th and the Dargaville Museum and Rivertown singers on the 22nd.

“The Dargaville Business Forum wants

to put a bit of extra sparkle into our town with the lights competition. With the extended shopping hours we wanted to bring people to town on a Friday evening to meet friends, get in the Christmas spirit and do their Christmas shopping in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere,” said business forum secretary Sue Curtis.

Foster’s Home Decorating is one of the shops involved with the initiatives. Coowner Karen Foster says she was keen to be part of it, as she wants to see Dargaville move forward and grow.

“With our customers spending their money in town, we can be here the next year and the year after. The more money that gets spent in Dargaville, means more businesses tend to give back, through sponsorship, to our community.” ¢

The St Joseph’s School float came first, with its world flag theme, Dargaville Primary School and their 18th–21st century, English Christmas tea themed float came second, while Dargaville Museum came third with their Queen of England float. ¢

DRAFT REGIONAL LAND TRANSPORT PLAN FOR NORTHLAND 2015-2021 On behalf of the Regional Transport Committee for Northland, we’re seeking feedback on a three-year review of the region’s land transport plan – effectively the blueprint for transport spending across Northland and our bid for central government transport funding assistance.

The plan details local roading projects proposed by Northland’s three district councils, state highway projects put forward by the NZ Transport Agency and strategic projects and public transport matters dealt with by Northland Regional Council.

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the Kaipara District Council hereby gives notice that the Northern Bass Event has made an application to have the following street restricted temporarily for the period below for the purpose of diverting Northern Bass 2017/18 event traffic.

Friday 29th December 2017 at 0:00am until Monday 1st January 2018 at 23:59pm Settlement Road, Kaiwaka –Restricted Access.

In his 90th year. His funeral service was held at the Lighthouse Function Centre, Harding Park, Dargaville on Saturday Decemeber 9th 2017.
