p Northland company, Gas and Tyre, have delivered more than 700 rugby balls to children during the Northland Rescue Helicopter Appeal, through attending book launches at schools and accepting donations at shows. Dargaville representative, Josh Boakes, attended the Selwyn Park School book reading, his first return since being a kid there himself, and delighted the young students with balls. Gas and Tyre marketing manager, Jess Stanley, said the balls were a part of a promotion their company previously held giving the balls out to low decile schools and she saw an opportunity to be a part of the helicopter appeal to give more away. “It was awesome to see their reactions. They loved the new book, but their eyes really lit up when they received a ball, it was a real bonus for them, and their parents are also very happy,” she said.

It is an ideal way to interact with members of our community to have a visit and a chat, as opposed to treating them,” said paramedic, Andy Walker. After significant budget cuts earlier this year, The Kauri Museum is now on track for a more successful year, reported Otamatea Kauri and Pioneer Museum Board chair, Mark Vincent, at the recent annual general meeting.

More than 40 people attended to hear progress reports from Mark Vincent, acting general manager Dr Tracey Wedge, and board member Allan Coutts.

The annual report charting the museum’s activities acknowledged contributions from volunteers, staff, supporters and funders, and included the audited accounts for the 2017/18 financial year, which posted an operating deficit of $181,000.

NRC reveals legal costs u by Paul Campbell

A legal battle over property rates collected in Kaipara has cost the Northland Regional Council more than $450,000 in legal fees.

Chair of the NRC audit and finance working party, David Sinclair, said he was pleased with the latest ruling in council’s favour, but “disappointed so much ratepayer money had to be spent on the legal fight.”

The Court of Appeal last month dismissed the latest appeal over allegedly invalid rates collected in Kaipara district. Richard Bruce Rogan and Heather Elizabeth Rogan were ordered to pay costs to both the NRC and the Kaipara District Council.

Cr Sinclair said the legal cost was “money which could have been better used to provide services that our

communities have said they want us to provide.

“The heart of this wider case was our council’s use of the Kaipara District Council to collect rates on our behalf.”

If the regional council were forced to set up its own, stand-alone rate collection agency, the outlay would be many times the legal costs it had incurred in the court action.

“Our position in that regard has never changed; collection of rates on our behalf by district councils provides significant cost savings, which benefit our shared ratepayer base.”

The determined group, including members of the Baylys Beach Society, worked tirelessly in the rain to complete the community project — including 10-year-old Caleb Tittleton who held the important role of tool and water carrier — and were rewarded with a welcome barbecue lunch.

Public feedback so far has been extremely positive according to BBS chairperson, Cheryl Carmichael. “I know people who have walked the track and seen the seats realise how hard those men worked to get the seats in,” she said.

To complete the project the BBS received a community funding grant from Kaipara District Council, and they contracted volunteers from The Menz Shed to construct and supply the seating. Stainless steel fixtures were used to ensure the structures would withstand coastal conditions. The

new bench seating enables walkers to take time out to rest and enjoy the spectacular views along Baylys Beach, and the BBS is confident the new seating will encourage many more people to utilise the track. ¢

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I would like to express my support and gratitude for the Dargaville Fire and Emergency crew after a minor incident recently.

Unbeknown to me a bird had nested in the chimney of the log burner — in spite of netting around the outside — and on a recent stormy evening, the nest caught alight when the fire was lit, creating a lot of noise, smoke and a redhot flue. The promptness of the fire crew

arriving within eight minutes of my 111 call was reassuring for me, in spite of a little embarrassment at a seemingly trivial event for so many firefighters to attend.

The calm, reassuring way they handled the incident proved that local residents are indeed in good hands in the event of an emergency.

Members of the Ruawai Boating Club and visitors will soon be enjoying new walkways at the boat ramp with the current installation of non-slip fibreglass mesh panels. The club is inviting local businesses and community members to sponsor a pole to help cover the shortfall in the cost of the project.

The existing walkway structure was erected in 2004, and some areas of the bottom end had suffered deterioration from the water. Several poles that hold the walkways were also needing replacing due to the number of wormholes affecting the future integrity of the structure.

Shipworm, also called pileworm, is common in most oceans and seas and cause destruction in wooden ship hulls, wharves and other submerged wooden structures, so maintenance and replacement are inevitable.

Boating club secretary, Tony Oud, was joined by other volunteers to replace the poles and walkways, working as the tide went out. “We trialled a single panel over the last year, and it has shown no deterioration at all,” said Tony.

“Hopefully this will last more than my lifetime — it’s a big job.”

The wharf, boat ramp and walkways are valuable assets to the club and community, including tourists stopping overnight, and it is hoped that locals will come forward with donations and sponsorship.

The project is expected to be completed before Christmas, and the club intends erecting a display board on the foreshore for the names of those who have contributed.

NORTHLAND RESCUE HELICOPTER 2018 APPEAL

Kaipara district plan changes The plan change provides changes to the fire safety rules for buildings and structures in the rural, residential, business areas. It removes the requirement to comply with the New Zealand Fire Service Firefighting Water Supplies Code of Practice.

The change will only be for new applications received after December 18. Applicants currently within the consenting process or who wish to change their current consent will be advised of a mechanism to do so in the new year. All existing consents issued in the last four years must comply with the previous fire safety rules, and not Plan Change 4.

The other change has come about through the Ministry for Primary Industries developing a National Environmental Standard for Plantation Forestry (NES-PF).

Council has to ensure its District Plan meets the rules of the NES-PF in providing a single set of regulations that apply to foresters throughout New Zealand. If anyone owns a forest that fits the criteria for plantation forestry, the new NES-PF will apply.

“All of our players are sports enthusiasts, but for many of them this was their first time playing basketball,” said Ruawai Primary School basketball manager, Natalia Partridge. “Their skills grew quickly, along with their companionship and confidence.”

“I’m used to ballet where I need to be delicate and poised but doing basketball I’ve learnt to be strong and rough,” said 10-year-old Olivia Partridge.

Each Monday morning they crossed the road to the Ruawai College gymnasium for a training session with coach Paul Rawaho, where they learned the basics. “We learnt how to use the

backboard to shoot and how to dribble the ball,” said 9-year-old Skyla Grieve.

Every Thursday they travelled to the Kaiwaka Sports Complex to play other schools from around the Kaipara district.

“Our first game was tough, and we came a close second, but the seed had been planted, and our team were hungry for a win,” said Natalia.

Despite the nerves and excitement, the players were getting consistent wins bringing them to the final round securing them the season trophy.

“Now they can’t wait for the competition next year,” said Natalia. ¢

We would love to not struggle each year when looking after our native birds.

I see where thousands of dollars are found to look after kauri trees, walking tracks, predator control and many other items but who planted the trees in the forest? Well, our native birds did so where is the help for them?

We must remember that the native birds were here long before man arrived. Many of the injur y’s that birds sustain are man-made. Humans call it progress but I wonder what the birds call it.

Most years I send an invitation to the head people at DOC in Wellington to come and have a look at what the Recovery Centre has been doing for conservation for the past 30 years. I do get the odd reply saying the Minister would love to visit but that never happens.

Some years ago I was asked to hand rear 12 native pigeon chicks for DOC. This was a project that they were running to introduce the pigeons back on the Three Kings Island. After rearing them for eight months they were taken to the Three Kings for release.

We never received a cent for the work we did and never found out how it all went not even a letter of thanks.

The funny part of this was at the start we received two plants in pots that were put in the cages to see if the pigeon would touch them as they were very rare plants (Pennantia baylisiana). The plant is endemic to the Three Kings Island and are complete with a registered number.

After the pigeons were taken away, the two plants were still in the aviaries so I took them home and planted them in the bush on our property where they started to look healthy again.

Two years on I received a frantic call about these two very rare trees and I was pleased to say they were growing very well. The guy on the phone was thrilled and said they would come and pick them up. He nearly had a fit when I told him I have planted them at my place so they couldn’t be removed.

I was asked that when they have seeds could I let them know so they could collect some. Now that should be worth a bob or two for the Centre. This could only happen at the Centre!

The Ruawai Promotions and Development Group is hosting its inaugural Stopbank Walkway Fun Run Walk or Cycle on December 16 and invites all members of the community to join in.

A young ambassador for the Northland Rescue Helicopter who has also assisted with several other fundraising efforts around the Kaipara District has become a published author at seven years old. The book The Good Baby and The Bad Hippo was launched last week and is the first in an upcoming series.

The story is a journey of a friendship that develops after a difference of opinion and an agreement to be truthful and eat healthily.

A lover of reading and writing, farm girl Madison MacMillan wrote the story on her way home from school one day.

“I wrote the book because my teacher read a story and I got an idea. The message of the book is to be kind and don’t lie,” said Madison.

The story has been brought to life with illustrations by 14-year-old Paige Kean from Whangarei Heads.

She completed the book p Maddison MacMillan has become a published author at over a two-week period and seven years old, with her first book The Good Baby and said she really enjoyed The Bad Hippo bringing Madison’s story to life. Madison’s father, Steve MacMillan, the journey takes her. The family-friendly event will begin with registrations from 8am at the Ruawai reserve next to the boat ramp.

Cyclists will set off at 9am on the 7.4km walkway with walkers, runners and buggies starting at 10am.

Participants are strongly encouraged to be a part of the fun environment by dressing in Christmas theme, including a quiz for those interested in an extra challenge — prizes will be drawn from correct entries. There will also be spot prizes, musical entertainment and refreshments. The return walkway stretches along a picturesque length of the Ruawai stopbank network and is a major project for the Ruawai Promotions and Development Group.

“Ruawai’s stopbanks are a vital part of protecting and managing our productive land,” said RPDG chair, Bruce Crompton.

“We are delighted to be able to open a section up to the public as a permanent walkway and look forward to Ruawai’s residents and visitors alike enjoying and learning about our area.”

The group are grateful to community volunteers, Kaipara District Council, Lotteries Community Grants, Raupo Drainage Committee and the local suppliers who gave their services at a discounted rate to make the project possible.

Wild Kiwi Girls

An unfortunate fatal encounter between a friend’s dog and a kiwi while out walking sowed the seeds of interest in a student-led pest control project to better protect the iconic bird.

Since the project began in mid-October, the plucky home-schooled duo (who check their trap lines from their horses Zahlis and Boxer) and several of their neighbours, have already trapped more than 230 possums, 45 rats and a stoat over roughly 90 hectares, including 15ha of land owned by the girls’ parents Katharina and Paul.

The sheer number of animals caught in a relatively short time has been a considerable revelation to those involved, especially given some pest control work and trapping was already being done in the wider area with the girls suggesting plentiful local food sources and a favourable climate might be partially responsible.

The youngsters’ interest in protecting kiwi and other birds and native wildlife, including kauri snail and gecko, was sparked when a dog dashed away during a river walk and targeted a kiwi.

Under the terms of the funding agreement, the project will run until mid-2021. All the catches involved - and their GPS co-ordinates – are recorded on the trap.nz website.

We’ve all seen the so-called reality shows in which a hard-bitten outdoors survivalist is parachuted into the Amazonian jungle with nothing but a pocket knife, a piece of string and a stick of chewing gum, and manages to build a three-star hotel before the last commercial break. Camping in the modern world has come a long way from such deprivations, but there’s a movement, which is rejecting the ‘glam’ life under canvas for a more characterbuilding experience.

It’s a big contrast — but it’s easy to see the point of the back-to-basics camping lobby. ‘Glampers’ with their vast air-conditioned tents running off generators, complete with PlayStations, fridges, wi-fi and heated showers are sort of like the kind of tourists who take a helicopter to the top of a mountain instead of climbing it. They aren’t in the wilderness at all, really. Contrast this with the kind of camping which we enjoyed as kids — tents, which took a geometrician and an engineer to

assemble, primitive facilities, cold baths in the creek, cooking over a charcoal barbecue — the works. There are some that say that those holidays with their scratchy woollen blankets, twigs in the scrambled eggs and sand in the bacon sandwiches were a horror of midges, mozzies and sunburn. Others say they made memories worth recapturing.

So we have a range of anti-glam camping options, from those who leave everything electric at home, through to more extreme examples.

Hardcore hikers carry only what they can fit in a backpack, making their camp with minimal tools. Some take it to a greater extreme, and go entirely survivalist, allowing themselves only the bare essentials and constructing bivouacs in the bush for shelter. These are the ones who excelled at making fire by rubbing sticks together as kids, and who can braid a fishing line from flax fibre.

Still, a middle ground may be the best way. There’s certainly something

to be said for frying up fish you have caught for yourself over the barbecue, for the smell of citronella candles and for being so tuckered out from the day’s fun that there’s no desire to log onto Facebook before bed. Best advice of all — when camping take only one mobile phone for the whole family. Then leave it in the car, to be used only to call the medics in an emergency. A little time free of devices will feel like a wild safari for most post-2000 kids, but as we’ve said — it ‘builds character’! ¢

While it’s often seen as a time to relax and unwind, there’s nothing to stop disaster and bad luck trying to make its mark on the holiday season. Of course, when you’re away from home and all geared up for a holiday adventure those little moments of adversity can sometimes be part of the challenge — a story to talk about later. At other times, a disaster can threaten to ruin everyone’s fun. That’s when it’s good to know that there are people on call to set things right.

While many businesses are closed for a well-deserved break over the holidays, there are those who by the nature of what they do have to remain on call to spring into action. Check out the names and numbers on these pages — your emergency plumbers, tow truck drivers, electricians and more who can save the day when it’s truly urgent. Oven broken down with the Christmas turkey still raw? Window smashed by a backyard cricket match gone wrong? If it’s crucial, these folks can help.

Then there are the others who standby at all times to rescue people in even more dire circumstances. As well as sparing a thought for the volunteers who crew our fire stations, and the folks who have trained hard to save

lives on our beaches or as members of the coast guard, take some time to make plans, so that they are less likely to have to come to your aid. With tinder-dry summer conditions, carry a fire extinguisher with you and be careful with barbecues while camping.

Be boat safe, with life jackets, and emergency locator beacon and a working CB radio to call for help if it’s needed. Take care on our driveable beaches, whether in a 4x4 or on dirt bikes and quads.

If something goes wrong, and it’s a situation beyond what you can manage, remember that the ultimate rescue and emergency number is still 111. Thanks to better mobile coverage than ever before, this lifeline could be a lifesaver!

Be safe these holidays, and enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that there are people out there who can help with

Let’s put Rubbish in its Place

Rubbish is everyone’s problem, kerbside collection and rubbish disposal is not funded by Rates, this is solely a user pays activity. We all live in the same space, breathe the same air, and want to pass on to future generations a healthy space for them to live. This means we need to take leadership, be responsible and work together. Here’s a couple of issues we keep coming up against at Council, and we’d love your help to keep the Kaipara beautiful.

A public litter bin, is just that, for the public. Please don’t put your household rubbish in there, or empty your business rubbish. Pop it out on collection day, or call a private collection company to organise a specific pick up for your business.

Due to the misuse of these public bins, the recycling bin on Totara Street is being removed. The general rubbish bin will be relocated elsewhere within the Totara St Reserve. The Bins on the Victoria Street Reserve (near the band rotunda) will be removed completely if they continue to be misused.

If you miss collection, don’t stack it outside a public bin, or put empty cardboard or recycling. You can take the prepaid bags direct to the dump free of charge.

If you start stacking rubbish, others will too, and that’s how we get split, animal attacked bags all over Victoria Street.

When you’ve decided you don’t want something anymore, it needs to go to the right place. Maybe a second hand store, to charity, or if it’s really broken, the dump.

You should not just dump it on the roadside or chuck it at the park at the end of your street, because then everybody has to pay to clean up that mess. So far this year Council has spent over $40,000 picking up waste people have just dumped, and those costs are increasing.

Dark days had fallen on the faithful. The roar of the mighty Holden V8 was heard no more in the land, with the evolution of the Commodore into a sleek, modern, carbon-friendly denizen of the 21st century. While the team in red looked for alternatives to the great legacy of the lion-badged eights, over the fence fans of Ford were enthusing about their new Mustang.

Of course, the blue oval’s eightcylinder stallion went on to become the top-selling sports car in the world, repeating the feat it accomplished back in the 1960s when its grandad arrived on the scene. However, GM has a long memory.

Moreover, there was a machine crafted to contend with the Mustang back in those psychedelic days of yesteryear — a car, which put the muscle in the muscle car-loving 1970s.

More blue collared than a Corvette, and as iconic as anything to ever roll out of Detroit, the newest Camaro is a thing of beauty, noise, tyre smoke and dreams. Specifically dreams for most of us, as it was never available in righthand drive. That is, until now. With Mustang special variants riding high and even Dodge getting in on the action with Hellcats and Demons, GM has given the green light to the venerable Aussie

The highly coveted title of New Zealand Car of the Year has been handed out for 2018, with a short list of ten exceptional vehicles narrowed down to a single supreme victor. In a first for the brand, Subaru takes top place on the podium this year, with their go-anywhere family SUV the Subaru Forester beating all comers to reign supreme.
