p Dargaville welcomed Santa and Mrs Claus this weekend, as a parade of festive floats and decorated vehicles took to the streets, heralding the beginning of the holiday season. The jolly gent from the North Pole declined to comment on the volume or quantity of presents he will deliver to local ‘nice list’ members later this month, stating only that pre-flight sleigh checks are positive, and that his team of aerial reindeer have been in training since September for the big night. Parade patrons enjoyed not just the arrival of the man and lady in red, but also a marching band, a huge festive tractor and great representation by local schools and community groups.

Support for legal action against former Kaipara District councillors, sympathy for those criticised, a threat of legal action and — just silence — are conflicting reactions in the fallout from Attorney General Lyn Provost’s report into the Mangawhai wastewater debacle.

Mismanagement by council was blamed for an $86 million debt which led to its replacement by the appointment of commissioners to run the Kaipara District. In her 400-plus page report, Mrs Provost apologised for ‘substandard’ Audit Office work monitoring the council books and also cited ‘poor

governance, poor decision-making and inadequate management’ by the council, but also said her office did not accept liability. The report released last week preceded the decision in parliament some hours later, which confirmed ratepayers will pick up the tab for the wastewater disaster.

Former Kaipara councillor, Bill Guest, says he’s “extremely sorry. I am embarrassed but I also feel vindicated for questioning council actions. But if commissioners find they can take legal action against former councillors — including myself, then I support that. continued on page 3 …
