Plans to realign the dangerous stretch of road on State Highway 12 near Matakohe are one step closer following a successful community consultation open day.

NZTA Northland highway manager Brett Gliddon says the agency have received an overwhelmingly positive response from the public regarding indicative plans for realigning SH12 and the two narrow one-lane bridges through Matakohe.

“By straightening the road to remove tight corners and by building new twolane bridges and intersections, we will create better access and a safer, more direct route. Following the current round of feedback from the community, a detailed design will be undertaken with construction planned to begin late next year.”

The road is part of the Twin Coast Discovery route and provides access to significant tourist destinations. There have been 15 reported accidents on the bridges between 2005 and 2015.

says she was thrilled with the turnout from the public and is impressed with the information from NZTA. “There were lots of representatives from the involved parties to answer questions and to get people’s feedback.

“This stretch of road has always been a high priority and they just needed someone to bring it to their attention.”

Mr Gliddon says the indicative design allows for the current access to be preserved to the bridges during the construction period and no decisions have been made yet on what will happen to the current one-lane bridges.

A unique idea involving sheep milk has won year-13 Ruawai College student Laura Blundell the Massey Innovator’s Award.

Ms Blundell recently took part in the Enterprise and Action weekend run by the Young Enterprise Trust and sponsored

by Massey University which saw a group of 80 students gather from all over New Zealand at the Massey Campus in Albany for the annual event.

Students were divided into groups of 10 and were challenged by the university to think of a way to stimulate New Zealand’s economy and future prosperity through food innovation.

A free course is available through the Northland Polytechnic to learn how to grow organic fruit and vegetables at the Mangawhai domain.

Those wanting to learn more about their family history now have the chance to get started at the Northern Wairoa Genealogy Society Inc’s beginner’s day.

“Being able to grow your own organic food is rewarding and those who have attended the programme in the past have been very inspired. Once you know how to grow, it is easy,” said horticulture tutor Heidelind Luschberger.

“People that attend the course from Wellsford can continue with their gardening at the Wellsford Community Garden. Everything is set up there,

including a polyhouse.” The group will establish a new community garden at the Mangawhai Domain. The topic will be fruit trees. How to plan and plant an orchard and grow your own vegetables organically. This will link in with an introduction to bees and propagation in general.

“Age groups from 16 to 80 years old have attended, it is lots of fun.

This included young mothers who wanted to learn about organic food because they don’t want to feed their family produce that has been grown with chemicals or herbicides,” said Ms Luschberger.

“People who already have gardens but would like to learn more about organic growing can also attend. The lessons include field trips, such as visiting a beekeeper who shows us what is required to set up a beehive.”

Those who attend receive a level three certificate in Sustainable Rural Development which is NZQA approved. There is no requirement to do level two first.

The course starts on Tuesday August 16 and runs for 19 weeks.

Sue says she first became interested in genealogy when she began to research the stories her grandfather used to tell her about his family.

“I have been able to prove most of them,” she says.

The Beginner’s Day for History/ Genealogy will be held on Saturday, August 20 from 10am–3pm at the Genealogy Rooms at the Dargaville Museum.

Each year the society holds a community event to promote Family History Month in August.

“If people are interested in learning about their history they can come along and we will head them in the right direction,” says convenor Sue Curtis.

“Every year we try to do something different to get people involved and let them know what we do.”

She says there can be many different reasons people become interested in their history. Some people have very specific reasons for tracing their family tree whilst others jump into family history research out of curiosity.

“Sometimes when you know who your family is or where you have come from you feel more grounded. It could also be for medical reasons and people can look up what conditions run in their family.”

The Mangawhai St John Op Shop has two new managers working alongside the team who have been helping run the business for the past six years.

The children attending the Maungaturoto Playcentre are discovering the art of planting edible plants and fruit trees as part of their culture and curriculum learning activities.

Frances Kennelly has recently joined the team and will be the full-time manager working in conjunction with Denise Davies who originally opened the store. Melane Quigley is the newly appointed parttime manager.

“Denise, Melane and Melissa Hunt set the shop up from scratch. A couple of ambulance officers decided it would be something good for Mangawhai,” said Frances.

“I am new to the area and was fortunate enough to secure the job. I am very excited. I love charity work and helping the community and am looking forward to getting to know the locals.”

A holistic approach Victoria de la Varis-Woodcock is putting her name forward for the West Coast-Central ward in the local body elections and hopes to use her practical and political knowledge to promote, protect and enhance the area.

With her first degree in Russian and Spanish, and now a Master’s degree in politics, Ms de la Varis-Woodcock taught English overseas and worked as a Russian interpreter before finally settling down with her husband Doug Woodcock to raise their three sons in the Kaipara.

There will be about 400 people in the tournament this week.

“I encourage others to take up the sport. The game doesn’t rely on fitness and you can play competitively or for fun. If you can’t run a kilometre, you can still play darts.

“Children can play too. Even 10-yearolds are playing in the nationals. You are talking the top 150 players for singles in the country, and competing brings the best out of you as a player. Anyone could win on the day.”

Craig suggests if people want to play they should get a board and start practising.

“Most RSAs have a dart board. I am always asking people on Facebook if they want a game. It doesn’t matter if you are experienced or learning — it is all good practise.” ¢

Two Ruawai College students had the unique opportunity to experience life as a police officer as part of the gateway programme which aims to give young people real life work experience.

Year 13 student Helena Thompson and year 12 student Hannah Fenney spent a week at the Dargaville Police Station getting some behind the scenes insight into a police officer’s world.

The students spent time obser ving the officers doing a variety of duties and Helena was able to experience a Friday night shift.

Craig says he became intrigued with the New Zealand darting community whilst watching the sport on television.

“You get the darts bug and I have been playing for two years now. I have been to quite a few national championships and did pretty well in the North Island Masters,” said Craig.

“I met the NZ number one Craig Caldwell and decided to sponsor him.

He has been to the world champs a few times and has my logo ‘Craig the Painter’ on his shirt.”

Craig says the darts community is compact and social. The tournament in Rotorua has pools of six people and the top three in each pool go into the main draw, and then there is the knockout tournament.

“It is a mind game — if you get to the main draw you have done pretty well.

The Kauri Museum has opened a new exhibition which has both an onsite and online presence displaying the history of the axemen of Northland.

Dargaville is to host the first ever round of a golf chipping challenge in New Zealand and organisers have plans for it to become a national event.

Northland’s competitive wood chopping and its connection with the kauri bushmen was a passion of former Kauri Museum CEO, Bet Nelley.

“Over the past century, Northland has produced many axemen and sawyers of stature. This exhibition owes much to the relationships Bet has nurtured,” said exhibition developer, Sheri O’Neill.

Second place went to Rachel Lowrie for My Great Great Great Uncle Captain John Gill and third place was Kaye Cottrell for her piece Billy Zen. The two-dimensional Judges Merit Award went to Alistair Morrow for Kuia 111.

John Ecuyer took home first place in the three-dimensional category for his wood piece titled A-risen.

“John’s piece was a lyrical response to the wood and executed by a very practised craftsperson. The signature was well finished, beautifully presented and demonstrated both skill and an artistic eye,” said Mr Carey.

Terry Haines came second in the three-dimensional category for his work Sail Light and Heather Carrigan received

the three-dimensional judges merit award for her work Tangaroa. Kaipara Art Awards chair John Pickworth said he was pleased with the overall standard of work submitted and by reducing the number of entries this year, the artwork was able to be viewed in an ‘uncluttered’ environment.

“We restricted the entry for the artists to one piece per person. Last year we had approximately 137 works entered and this year we had only 39.”

Mr Carey said the smaller exhibition allowed each work to stand alone and meant that each piece had a better chance of being viewed successfully.

“It gave the opportunity for the artists to have their work understood and appreciated.”

The event was made possible with sponsorship from Pub Charities NZ Ltd, the Kaipara Lifestyler, Westmoreland Homes and the McGarry Family of Mangawhai. ¢

Ninety years ago, in 1926, big band jazz was top of the charts, the mighty All Blacks ‘Invincibles’ were on tour, and a growing need for electricity saw the first of our hydro-electric dams come on line.

Here in the Kaipara the news was of a different sort. Mercantile success and the thriving growth of the settlement was changing from the pioneer days of the kauri trade to the different pace of farming. This news article, published in August of 1926, was to herald a new way of doing business here when it came to the wide green lands laid bare by the woodman’s axe and saw.

‘Mr Tom Jones, late government land valuer and well known in this district for many years is joining forces with Mr Stephen Roper in his land agency business. The combination should be a good one as both members of the new firm have a sound knowledge of land values (town and country) which should be of immense value to themselves and their prospective clients’.

The astute Tom Jones and the wellrespected Steve Roper were indeed a winning combination. By the outbreak of World War Two the pair had built a solid business, helping grow the rural ‘backbone’ of the district from their Dargaville offices. Both men travelled far and wide in the days when boat and horseback often beat the automobile on our rugged roads. By 1940 Tom’s son Robert, known as Chub, joined his father’s team. Just three years earlier the business had been awarded the prestigious State insurance agency for

After a hard winter of work out in the field — or a dormant season stowed away in the back of the shed — machines are being brought back to life out on the land before the rigours of springtime kick in.

From the big to the small, maintenance is underway to ensure a profitable and hassle-free season. Thankfully, modern advances in areas such as battery rejuvenation, lubrication and rust repair make the yearly round of pre-spring maintenance a lot easier than it used to be!

For those heavy pieces of equipment which may have languished under taps or tin roofs these past few months, it may be time to consider a full blast back and paint, eliminating rust at the root of the problem.

On a smaller scale, the tools to effect rust repair on smaller areas are readily available to the home handyman and new developments in preventative antirust treatments have flowed through in recent years from military and even aerospace applications.

Under the hood, a new breed of specialist and synthetic oils do their part to bring machines back to life, or give them a well earned ‘birthday’ after the mud and rain of winter. Check with your mechanic or technician, because using a hard-wearing oil is one of the surest ways to protect the working parts of your motor. Other additives can help bolster old or failing gaskets internally, or give new life to ailing cooling systems.

Of course, there’s a threshold beyond which a visit to the garage is definitely in order.

On both farms and lifestyle blocks it’s also time to fire up those small twostroke engines for jobs such as lawn mowing, hedge trimming and weedwhacking. With smaller moving parts and the necessity to start first time, these may also require a trip to the

It’s noteworthy that many of our new lifestyle block owners are using outdoor
