Mr Wade’s resignation comes amid continuing community concern regarding rates increases and council debt. He explained that he had tried extremely hard to continue and added, “For some time, I have found that in the current environment my thoughts and opinions are not wanted.”

In response to Mr Wade’s resignation, Mayor Tiller said, “as a first term councillor I felt the same frustration. It was not until I became familiar with local government that I found traction. It can feel very intimidating.”

“This Council is made up of nine elected members who all have the same right to exercise their views and persuade members to support their ideas. Sometimes you are successful and sometimes you aren’t. This is the nature of democracy.”

“As mayor I have valued his contribution and I believe that the whole council has worked well as a team.”

Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association chairman, Ron Manderson, has called Mr Wade’s resignation a courageous and principled decision.

“Mr Wade has previously expressed concern over council incompetence and expressed genuine concern for the community. We can only hope that other councillors move to request a commissioner or also resign,” says Mr Manderson.

Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman, Bruce Rogan, echoes Mr Manderson’s sentiment, saying “of all the councillors Andrew Wade is the least culpable, he at least was trying to see a way forward.”

I had thought that with 22 years of business experience and local knowledge, I would have a lot to offer the role of councilor. However, it is with regret that I must now apologise to those who elected me and advise that last Friday I tendered my resignation.

I have tried extremely hard to continue. However, for some time, I have found that in the current environment my thoughts and opinions are not wanted. I have become a lone voice, without support and as a result ineffectual.

I do not need to state the seriousness of the issues facing the Kaipara District Council, these have been well covered in the media. On a positive note, I welcome the current review and hope that the outcome will be a clear direction for the future of our district.

If invited, I would be very happy to offer my services to any initiative which has a focus on resolving historic problems, building a strong community and minimising the financial burden on ratepayers.

Senior students at Rodney College were recently given the opportunity to demonstrate their scientific prowess to younger pupils when the college played host to the Fonterra science roadshow.

The purpose of the programme is to broaden students’ knowledge of science and technology and the world around them.

The show uses hands-on exhibits and live demonstrations and allows senior students to work alongside the staff taking responsibility for exhibits, encouraging younger students to take a hands-on approach, and answering questions.

“The seniors got a real buzz out of teaching the younger ones who were interested, keen to learn and clearly

A year seven and eight netball tournament was held last week at Dargaville High School as the culmination of an initiative to promote netball skills in DARGAVILLE Northern Wairoa schools.

Eight teams entered the tournament from Ruawai College, Dargaville Intermediate, Matakohe School and Tangiteroria School with first prize going to Ruawai College, and Dargaville Intermediate Sharks awarded runners-up.

“We have seen really positive results with netball in our schools. Never before have we been able to dedicate this amount of time to promote netball in the school environment,” says Sport Northland lower north team leader, Roxanne Kelly.

The programme also introduced the new 5-aside style of netball ‘V-Ball’ to the schools which culminated in a recent ‘V-Ball’ fun day at Dargaville High School with 33 teams of boys and girls attending the event.

The V-Ball and year seven and eight tournament will be a regular event in the Northern Wairoa schools’ calendar.

As all eyes are on the Olympics in London, a group of young Northland unicyclists have arrived home from Italy with two world championship titles

Sam La Hood, 16, from Dargaville, has taken out the women’s world street unicycling title along with Chris Huriwai, 20, from Otaua, who defended his world men’s street title at the Unicon 2012 championship.

They both tried unicycling for a bit of fun — Chris bought his first unicycle on an impulse when he spotted one on sale and Sam first learnt to ride at a Circus Kumarani festival but didn’t ride again until she met Chris two years ago. “Sam has worked hard and she organised everything herself, including her school work, doing some from home so she had time to practise unicycling during the day. We think she is absolutely amazing,” says Sam’s grandmother, Gaynor Edgar.

Chris has been mentoring Sam for two years, encouraging her into the competitive side of unicycling and ultimately the world championships.

“Following the last Unicon in Wellington, they set their sights on the next championships in Italy and made a decision to do whatever it took to be there,” says Chris’s mum, Jenny Huriwai.

Chris and Sam were part of a small

Northland group who attended the championships in the northern city of Brixen. They battled it out against more than 1,500 riders from 35 countries who came together to compete in events ranging from freestyling and high jump to cross country and endurance races.

Samuel Tzikoucos from Kaikohe, was also placed fourth in the flatland section, and Mike Padial took out eighth place for the male trials in the 19 to 24-year section.

“They have all worked hard, done their best and we’re very proud of them.”

The group are now looking forward to the world championships in Canada in 2014.

Council rates invoices delay The Kaipara District Council’s interim rates invoices have been delayed due to a stationery error When staff at Datamail came to load the machines with the rates stationery they noticed that the rates form printed out one small but very important centimetre further down the page than it should have been.

The invoices were all set to be printed when the problem was noticed and rates due to be posted week beginning August 6 have now been delayed until the following week.

Council’s Corporate Service Manager, Barbara Ware said, “It’s murphy’s law, it doesn’t sound like much but what it means is when Datamail run the interim rates invoices, the information won’t be sitting in the right place.”

This means that the council are unable to meet the Local Government (Rating) Act requirement for ratepayers to receive the invoice fourteen days before the due date of August 20, 2012.

There is provision within the Act that allows for the due date to be automatically extended to fourteen days after receipt of the invoice if it is not received in time.

“Despite the extension provision in the Act, we believe it is important that we give ratepayers a reasonable timeframe between receipt of the invoice and the due date for payment. Council will now hold an Extraordinary Council meeting on Monday, August 13 at which it will be asked to agree to reset the due date for the interim invoice to September 10. We will then arrange for Datamail to port the invoices on August 14.”

Ratepayers will have up to three and a half weeks within which to receive and arrange for payment of the interim invoice.

 High tide in Kellys Bay. As the tide drops the sandbanks will begin to show out in the harbour

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Sandbanks and sandbars are plentiful on the Kaipara Harbour.

Off Kellys Bay in the northern part of the harbour, they are made up of solid sand and can provide plenty of fun They make happy memories for holiday-makers who use them as a deepwater launching pad for a few hours water skiing as well as a great mullet netting spot.

But as with all adventure it needs a little planning. There has to be a low tide about the middle of the day, but if your boat is not still afloat at low tide in the bay, fishing or skiing will be postponed until the morrow.

Once landed out on the sandbank there always needs to be a careful

anchor watch if you are pulling a net around. Netting becomes an absorbing pastime and it is easy to forget everything else. Imagine heading back for your boat only to see it empty, drifting away up harbour.

In summer time the incoming tide runs over the warm sand and brings the mullet to follow it in. Very occasionally, if you are lucky, a large pool of seawater is left behind in a hollow swarming with mullet, just waiting for the new tide. It makes for easy pickings.

Because of the sandbanks and bars in the harbour there was once an easing of regulations for netting on the Kaipara.

At a special meeting with the Minister of Fisheries in Helensville in 1914, M.P. Gordon Coates spoke for the fishermen, saying “The industry is assuming large proportions, there being seventeen or eighteen boats in Helensville, seven from Batley and a dozen from Wairoa.”

The fishermen explained that netting by ‘stalling’ was illegal, but because of the sandbanks, the overhauling method was unsuitable. Illegal netting was the only way fishermen could make a living.

‘Stalling’ means leaving a net set so that is high and dry when the tide goes out and any fish caught are left dying on the sand.

Penalties were harsh. A fisherman’s boat and nets were confiscated if caught by an inspector. Some fishers even got into trouble with the Department for carrying two nets. Inspectors assumed

that the smaller meshed mullet net was being used for flounder fishing.

All was eventually sorted out. The penalty was changed to a fine and the practise of stalling was allowed as a special case on the Kaipara.

But in 2008 the law was changed again to make it an offence to set stall nets, so bringing Kaipara into line with the rest of New Zealand.

And harsh penalties were back in November 2009 when a Whangarei fisherman was fined a total of $630 for stalling. His boat was forfeited by the Crown.

A Northland Ministry of Fisheries Field Manager explained. “ The introduction of this regulation is a key component in ensuring that Kaipara Harbour fisheries remain sustainable. The Harbour has an extensive fishery that is important to commercial, recreational and customary fishers alike and Fishery officers will act to ensure that their rights are protected.”

Winter health update Oliver — Now public Influenza A severe strain of H3N2 influenza is sweeping New Zealand. Christchurch and Auckland have been hardest hit so far but Kaipara is not immune from the nasty virus.

Vaccination is considered by health practitioners to be the best form of protection and is available free until the end of August for those over 65, pregnant women, and for children and adults with serious medical conditions, including asthma and diabetes. The best way to determine your eligibility for free vaccination is to contact the practice nurse at your local medical centre.

“Other ways to protect yourself and others is to practice good hand hygiene, especially after coughing and sneezing and to stay home if you have the flu,” says public health nurse, Dee Millen.

Mobility aids for loan It is now possible to gain access to mobility aids on a short term loan.

Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka St John Stations are providing the service for those who require mobility aids for a brief time or those who are not currently registered in the health system.

They are available from the stations in exchange for a donation and include walkers, crutches, commodes, wheelchairs and shower stools.

“The service has grown over the years and we often receive donations

of aids from families who no longer require them,” says St John Operations team manager, Stephen Rosser.

“This is an excellent service — it’s important that people are aware of what is available to them in the community,” says Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive, Debbie Evans.

Keeping doctor’s appointments Missed appointments are adding to doctor’s already strained schedules.

You often hear people say it is difficult to book a doctor’s appointment when they need it but at a recent community meeting last week, medical professionals from the Maungaturoto Medical Centre presented the other side of the story.

The medical centre reported that a number of people do not show up for appointments and this means the booking time is wasted.

“The trend appears to be that people feel sick, say on Friday and book an appointment for Tuesday.

They then feel better but rather than cancelling they simply don’t turn up,” says Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive, Debbie Evans.

“It is frustrating for medical staff trying to meet people’s expectations to then have a doctor sitting there without a client. A simple courtesy call goes a long way.”

Judges appointed for arts awards A distinguished panel of judges have been selected for the upcoming Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Arts Awards, an annual event organised by the Dargaville Arts Association and Mangawhai Arts Association along with the Kauri Museum in Matakohe The three judges are well known to the Kaipara region and have exhibited internationally. They are: Colleen Urlich from Dargaville, Manos Nathan from Dargaville, and Bev Taylor from Kaiwaka.

The awards are open to Kaipara residents with a maximum of two entries per artist and prizes of $500 for each category.

There are four categories — painting and drawing, photography and printing, adornments, and three-

dimensional, which includes pottery, sculpture, glass and woodwork.

Opening night and prize giving will be held Friday, August 31 at 6pm at the Kauri Museum. There will also be an exhibition of works at the museum open to the public free of charge from September 1 to 27.

Audiences are in for a treat with the announcement of an extra helping of ‘Oliver!’

Otamatea Repertory Theatre has decided to add an extra show in response to overwhelming public demand. The extra show will be a matinee on Sunday 12 August.

Lionel Bart’s sensational musical boasts a string of hits — Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, Oom Pah Pah, As Long As He Needs Me. Reviewer, Jen Calthrop says, “Director, Peter Flower’s production is fresh and interesting, taking us out of the Victorian era to somewhere both more modern and more colonial — shades of 1930s’ depression mixed with the austerity of the 1950s, with a bit of wild-west thrown in for good measure. Musical Director Warwick Simpson’s treatment of the music supports this design as many of the tunes are jazzed up to give the piece more of a smoky, swing feel, and the band are more than up to the task, playing with a confidence and musicality seldom heard on the amateur stage.”

from all over the Kaipara and beyond.

Lions’ fundraising supports theatre The Lions Club of Paparoa go the extra mile to support their community. In collaboration with the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, the club not only helped to promote the theatre’s recent show but also successfully raised funds for Project Promise “Wherever possible the club seeks ventures that are multi-faceted,” says club member, Wayne Birt.

They purchased seats for the opening night of ‘Oliver’ at a discounted rate, promoted the show and on-sold the tickets to raise money for Project Promise.

“Proceeds from the night raised $3500 for the cause which includes a dollar for dollar ‘top up’ from the Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust.”

Project Promise aims to raise $3M to construct an oncology facility in Whangarei to provide chemotherapy treatment and multi-disciplinary outpatient consultations.

Get ready for three days of sky-diving action in the Kaipara with the arrival of the Kauri Coast Skydiving Carnival, with sport jumpers, celebrity and charity jumps and a launch party on Friday night The carnival which runs from Friday, August 10 to Sunday, August 12 kicks off Friday afternoon at 4pm with a skydiving display at Selwyn Park in Dargaville with streamer jumps, formation skydiving and free flying.

On Friday evening there will be a launch party at the Dargaville Club along with the opportunity to meet the professionals and watch skydiving DVDs. Saturday will be an all-day event at the Ruawai airfield with tandem jumps and ‘sporties’ displays, along with food, music, Circus Kumarani and entertainment for the whole family.

The Cancer Society of NZ fundraising income coordinator, Nicolette Eddy will also be jumping on Saturday to raise funds for the upcoming Daffodil Day appeal.

Law change could see more motorists on two wheels  by Andy Bryenton

From the first of October this year the laws governing learners and restricted motorcycle licenses are changing. But rather than becoming more restrictive, the LTSA have taken a common sense approach, opening up more motorcycles for new riders and closing some loopholes which allowed learners to get hold of far too much power early on With spring on the way and fuel prices still hovering around the two dollar mark, many people will be considering the move to two wheels. The process remains the same for those ‘graduating’ from a car to a motorcycle — first you must pass a basic handling skills test, then a theory test. Both are relatively easy for those with a good sense of balance and an understanding of the road code.

The big difference comes in the form of which motorcycles you can ride upon receiving your ‘L’ plates — and it’s a

welcome change. The current law states that you may only ride a motorcycle with an engine capacity up to 250cc, although this covers a huge range of machines. At one end of the scale is the small, practical Suzuki GN250 — a popular commuter bike for students.

At the other is the high-powered Honda NSR 250 2 stroke — a racing machine tweaked to be road legal. While bikes like the GN250 are safe and stable for learners, even seasoned riders must take care with powerful bikes like the NSR which offer high performance.

From October 1st the law changes to address the power to weight ratio of motorcycles, not their engine size. This means two important things for the potential motorcyclist.

Firstly, the bike you want to ride may be immediately available to you as a legal learner’s machine. This is especially important for heavy or tall riders, who may face more danger on a small bike than on one suited to their body dimensions. A list available at the

authority’s website (http://www.nzta. govt.nz/licence/getting/motorcycles/ approved-motorcycles.html) contains

some appealing classic picks as well as several modern machines able to tackle touring and the open highway.

Mainline buyer seeks community support With Main Coachline on the market, a prospective buyer is asking for community support to keep the service running.

Current owners Pieter and Audrey Fakkers are forced to sell the bus service between Dargaville and Auckland, which has been running for over 20 years, due to ill health.

Prospective buyer, Robert Dew, has been looking at ideas to make the business viable.

“What it comes down to is community support — we need people to patronise the service so it is financially viable. I am aware the coachline is important to the community and I will do my best to keep the coach running,” says Mr Dew. In the past Mr Fakkers was the

sole bus driver, however, under new ownership a waged bus driver would be required and this would incur cost increases.

“I foresee sizeable price increases to the shuttle services at either end of the coach route as they will not cover costs, however the Auckland student collection route would be set at a low pricing scale because it is a set route.”

The service is also utilised by tourists, local businesses for goods delivery as well as people who travel to Auckland for medical treatment.

The hunt is on to bring home the bacon It’s a yearly tradition enjoyed by hundreds of Kaipara locals — the Aratapu Tavern’s yearly Wild Boar Hunt. And while the endless struggle of hunter versus pig is played out in the bush, there’s plenty to do at the tavern itself… not the least of which is enjoying a tasty spit roast meal This year there are massive prizes up for grabs, as hunters compete for the heaviest boar, the average weight, and a new and exciting ‘father and son’ category. As the competition falls on fathers’ day it’s only natural that the Aratapu Tavern hunt pays tribute to one of the best experiences of being a kid – going hunting with your old man!

home the bacon’ with a monster black boar tipping the scales at 189.6 pounds.

The year before, Kevin Thompson bagged a 179.7 pound beast to take the title.

This year it’s all on the line across seven prize categories, and of course bragging rights around the fireplace for an entire year.

To add to the fun, hosts Donice and Richard Morris have laid on a tasty meal

for competitors (included in the ticket price), along with entertainment for young and old courtesy of the ever-popular Urban Country Band, who’ll be playing live on Sunday afternoon. fall into place, but genealogy isn’t all just detective work. It’s a great way to reconnect with the culture of your ancestors, to explore those family stories, and to add some background to those antiques and heirlooms which have been passed down through the generations.

Here in the Kaipara the official genealogy club has about 20 full-time members, but hundreds of people go it alone each year, trying to build a family tree or search for a famous ancestor. The good news is, our local genealogy experts are about to host an open day for anyone interested in family history — a chance to take advantage of their research skills and tools.

On Saturday the 25th of August, from 1 to 4 pm the Dargaville Library will be transformed into a centre for genealogical research. Beginners are asked to bring whatever information they have at hand, while those who have already begun their family tree might find a new approach or direction with the help of the club.

As generations pass on into history, it’s important to keep a sense of culture and family alive.

The Kaipara, with its rich pioneering past and tapestry of settler cultures is a perfect example of a place where exciting stories, colourful characters and surprises await the hobby genealogist — who knows just where your family tree will lead you?

99% of the time when the assessors aren’t on site. Personally I believe that the vast majority of organic growers are honest, however local familiarity and occasional unannounced drop in visits to the site gardens could feasibly give even more confidence to Farmers Markets’ customers than certification. In regards to local community orientated organic growers, organic certification should be viewed as a palliative measure only as we go about rebuilding local relationships based on useful practical relationships, trust and goodwill.

Markets is LOCAL i.e. hand to hand, eye to eye transactions with people who mostly live nearby. This allows for a certain degree of transparency as sellers and buyers get to know each other and communicate on matters of procuring good honest local organic food.

As relationships form and if mutually agreeable, a visit or two to the growing site could be arranged.

Dear Editor, A response to concern about uncertified organic produce sellers at Farmers Markets.

Organic certification does have its place, particularly for distant or export markets, however not every organic grower/seller needs to be certified. Some of us have been growing organically long before certification even existed and will continue to do so out of common sense.
