p Dargaville Bowling Club presented the proceeds from their recent fundraising trivia night to Dargaville St John Ambulance volunteers. St John area committee secretary Elaine McCracken says the funds will go toward training and replacing ambulance equipment as well as replacing ambulance vehicles nationwide. “We desperately need more volunteers for active ambulance duty, behind the scenes work on the area committee and for support,” she says. Mangawhai Meats owner Dan Klink has placed runner-up in the Meat Retailers Association of New Zealand Young Butcher of the Year competition held last week.

“It was an amazing competition to be a part of and a great experience. I am feeling really proud to bring the award home to Mangawhai,” said Dan. “The competitors are all at the top of their game across the country. It took months to prepare for and it was nice to be there and meet the people at this level with the same passion for the trade.”

Dan says it was a supermarket dominated competition and he was proud to represent his town.

“I was the only independent butcher in the competition. Most of the others came from supermarkets and you noticed their stamp on the event and what they put into it.

“I had a lot of support from the community and to bring something back to share with the town was special.” The event was broken up into five regions

and five sections with one apprentice and one butcher from each. It consisted of a 45-minute theory section on trade knowledge, anatomy, calculations and cooking knowledge with a 10-minute interview about each contestant’s passion for the trade and where they see it heading in the future.

There was also a two-hour practical session including a protein cutting test, cut and display section and a mystery cut which was a shoulder of lamb and not revealed until five minutes before the test.

“I ended up with 38 products from the mystery cut which worked out at one product every three minutes.

“Next on the agenda is the upcoming New Zealand Sausage competition at the end of September and we are working on a few new sausage flavours to enter.” ¢

Spokesperson for Friends of Kai Iwi Lakes, Rob Stevenson, says the group is disappointed. “We think this report lacked credibility. It contained inaccuracies and did not offer all available options,” said Mr Stevenson.

“Friends of Kai Iwi Lakes do not agree with the decision to ban boats on Lake Waikare, nor believe that there are any convincing reasons to make this decision.”

Further decisions include the establishment of an Education Centre and a Cultural Impact Assessment to be carried out along with establishment of a ranger’s residence and extensions to walking and cycling tracks.

The next meeting of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee will resolve all other matters before recommending a final Reserve Management Plan to council. ¢

Mr Winder says the more than 1,000 submissions received demonstrated a strong community connection to the domain.

“The committee has sought to manage the domain and lakes for the future in a way that respects the past, as well as the wishes of present generations.”

He says a ‘woeful performance’ by the Crown since 1840 has led to the decisions.

“The lakes are only in public ownership because of the actions and wishes of Paramount Chief Te Awha Parore, who sold the land into public ownership in 1876. Since the 1876 sale neither the Crown nor local authorities have a flash history with the Taharoa Domain. ” Mr Winder says it is because of this history that the TDGC includes equal membership from Te Roroa,

Milestone for machinery club Artists travel east u by Ayla Miller

The Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club members are celebrating their 15th birthday and are taking this opportunity to reflect on the milestones over the years and the people who have helped them get to where they are.

Seven artists from the Dargaville Art Association and White Rock Gallery, Paparoa, have joined forces to hold an exhibition at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery. The West Coast Collaboration presents the various styles and mediums displaying what the artists are achieving.

Club founder, patron and current public relations officer, Bruce Galloway placed the first expressions of interest advertisement in the local paper in May 2001. On August 30 that year, he and five other machinery enthusiasts held their first meeting and the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club was born.

“We started the club to preserve some older machinery for the next generation,” Mr Galloway said.

The museum site at Harding Park was prepared during 2002 and 2003.

The woolshed was the first building to be placed on the site along with the workshop and the smoko room.

“We drew up a plan and stuck to it and have accomplished what we set out to do.” The work was funded by a few very generous locals along with a grant from the ASB community trust which enabled them to build stage one and two of the project.

In 2011 mayor Neil Tiller opened the

premises which were named the L and N Andrew auditorium to recognise these donors.

Stage three saw another 20x30metre shed which was completed in 2015 and funded through a second ASB community trust grant.

“I am frequently asked by other clubs around the country how we did it so quickly. I tell them it is the dedication and commitment of our past and present club members and the community along with the grants that helped make this happen,” Mr Galloway said.

They have more than 100 present members with some as far away as England, America and Australia.

Mr Galloway says the club is always looking for new members and will be increasing their educational role in the future whilst continuing their partnership with the local high school’s gateway programme. ¢

The Wellsford Districts Sport and Recreation Collective are beginning to plan a multipurpose sports facility at Centennial Park and are encouraging people to get involved in the project.

For the last five years the collective have run a community fun day to fundraise for the planned complex.

“The Rodney Local Board plan for 2014 has set aside $20,000 for planning and designing new/ upgraded facilities at Centennial Park in partnership with the community,” said chair Wendy Crow-Jones.

“The collective was formed in 2009 as our answer to the original Push Play initiative which was launched to get people more active and improve participation in sport. When government funding died away, we formed WDSRC so we could work as a group towards getting better facilities.

“The only major building at Centennial Park is the old A and P hall which is past its use-by date. The only other indoor facility in Wellsford is the local gymnasium at Rodney College.”

Wendy says Wellsford has a large sporting community and draws players from a wide area for rugby, netball, athletics, tennis, hockey, and cricket.

“Centennial Park is ideal for sports and recreation. It is close to the highway yet has a real country feel and it has a great atmosphere to relax in.”

A survey done in the area revealed the need for better sports facilities and Wendy believes Wellsford, being halfway between Auckland and Whangarei, is

strategically well located to have a large indoor facility for tournaments.

“It is easier for people to come to Wellsford than having to go all the way to the city.

“We encourage people in the community to come along to the AGM and be involved. We would like to start planning and advancing the vision for the building. The facility would be available for all types of events which would be a great resource for everyone.”

The annual general meeting will be on Monday, September 5 at 7pm at the Coast to Coast Hauroa Trust building, 72 School Road, Wellsford. ¢

“It has been many years since the club has played in first division. Our team did superbly well, we had a real mixture of high school students and others from the Northern Wairoa area bringing together a good balanced team,” said coach Sam Green.

“We made sure we had a big squad this year and we had a lot of players involved, it was really successful.”

Sam says the priority for the club was to get into the league to play in the first division.

“We really wanted to encourage the high schoolers to come and play. We appreciate that they are always learning and the coaches are constantly trying to improve the talent of the young ones because that keeps them interested in the sport.

“We have been lucky to have a few players of above average ability and they have been the mainstay of the team and helped the younger players along the way. Having the youth involved is a good way to keep the sport going.

“It is quite an achievement and we had a lot of positives come out of the season.

The club only had one team this year and want to add an additional senior reserve team for next season so are on the lookout for another dozen or so players.

“This would give the two teams a lot of opportunity and everyone would have the chance to play in the reserve grade.”

Where It’s Easy to Live Road Works for September 2016

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. Please refer to program below for location of spraying which is subject to weather conditions.

Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction.

Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during September include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and the clearing of culvert inlets and outlets. Friends of Ruawai Primary School are holding a fundraising movie night on Thursday September 1 at Dargaville’s Anzac Theatre to enable free participation for every Ruawai Primary child in a new school-wide gymnastics programme in term four.

The highly anticipated New Zealand movie Richie McCaw — Chasing Great releasing nationwide this week, documents Richie McCaw’s final 365 days of leading the All Blacks as the most capped rugby player of all time.

Manhunt disrupts Kaipara residents “The police found the stolen car hidden behind the old Scout hall in Bickerstaffe Road,” an eyewitness told Lifestyler. “It is pretty obvious he managed to then get a ride out of the area from someone.”

The police focus then shifted to Kaiwaka after a reported sighting there.

Four community daycare centres and preschools, and some businesses closed for the day as police searched the town.

Road blocks over a wider area deterred some residents from travelling to work.

By Sunday evening the search spread to Browns Road in Mangawhai, where residents reported hearing loud bangs as a property was searched without result.

By Monday the search focus shifted to Auckland.

Detective Inspector Kevin Burke says police from Northland, Waitemata, Auckland City and Counties Manukau, are involved in the ongoing hunt.

Kite is about 183cm tall with brown curly hair. He was wearing a blue T-shirt with white writing and a brown zip-up hoodie when the manhunt began.

He has a history of imprisonment for bank robbery and is also wanted for alleged methamphetamine offences.

Police say he should not be approached and any sightings should be reported by calling 111 immediately.

Pou Tu Te Rangi Harding Park – a site of magnificence.

Two weeks ago there was a special event for Kaipara, with the blessing of the new signs and pou at Pou Tu Te Rangi Harding Park in Dargaville. They look fantastic.

Pou Tu Te Rangi Harding Park is one of the Council’s three premier parks. The Pa site in it is of particular historical significance. The masts from the Rainbow Warrior tower over the park.

The name Pou Tu Te Rangi Harding Park acknowledges two of the historic benefactors - the Harding family and Te Uri o Hau. The Pou and signs are an important element for the park’s identity.

The name and the visual elements are designed to show the connection between the early settlers and Te Uri o Hau, and their relationship with the land.

Key to the brand image is the harvest star, Pou Tu Te Rangi. Elements from the Kaipara brand depicting the wairua of the Kaipara - its mountains, rivers and the two oceans - are held within and flow through Pou Tu Te Rangi and its constellation.

The blessing was also a major milestone in terms of the work being carried out in the reserve. Stakeholders have started developing walking loops, and cleared a lot of the weed to open up the magnificent views particularly from the Pa site.There will be interpretation panels installed during the next year that will tell interesting stories of the natural and cultural history of the area. Your Council is supporting these developments, investing $100,000 per year.

The reserve is co-governed by Te Uri o Hau and the Council. This model is working well, and the spirit of the partnership between Te Uri o Hau and the Council was evident at the blessing.

An advisory group including the Vintage Machinery Club and the Museum help support the decision making process on

how the reserve should develop. If you have not been up to the reserve recently, it is well worth visiting.

Taharoa Domain (Kai Iwi Lakes) – Kaipara’s dune lakes of national significance.

Another of Kaipara Council’s three premier reserves is the Taharoa Domain.

This reserve is co-governed by Te Roroa, Te Kuihi and the Council. Last week the Governance Committee of the Taharoa Domain met to determine their recommended direction for the management plan for this reserve.

This followed the receipt of many submissions.

There was a wide range of views expressed in submissions on how the Domain should be developed and how we should protect the pristine nature of the lakes. Upper-most in the mind of most is the risk of weed infestation in these freshwater lakes.

The Committee recommended that the recreational activities that take place on the big lake Taharoa continue, including power boat usage. However, over time more controls will be introduced to protect areas for children and swimmers, to inspect boats before they enter the water for weed contamination, and to counter irresponsible behaviour both on the lake and in its surrounds.

Power boat usage on the smaller lake Waikare is to be brought to an end. This will become a lake for recreation of a non-motorised form.

The Taharoa Governance Committee has worked well over the past four years.

Reaching consensus last week on the management of the Domain as we look to the future was an important milestone.

The Council has been increasing its investment into this reserve.

The Northland Regional Council is also investing to assist. Camper bookings are now increasing year on year.

A MESSAGE FROM GREG GENT Standing for Mayor of Kaipara District

I put my name forward for election as Mayor of Kaipara because the Kaipara has always been, and will continue to be, my home and I care about it deeply. I am a dairy farmer and company director from Ruawai.

I am married to Ann Flood and we have four adult children.

At this time Kaipara desperately needs an experienced governor in the role of Mayor if it is to continue to rebuild.

Spending other people’s money is a huge responsibility. I am acutely aware many in Kaipara live on very modest incomes. If I lead Council that will never be forgotten.

I would want to lead a forward-looking Council. Of course we need to learn from what has happened in the past but the reality of local government legislation is that it is close to impossible to hold former Councillors to account. I do not want to further litigate the past as that will only take our focus away from the important things we need to do in the future.

GOVERNANCE I have been in governance roles for the past 20 years including Chairman of Northland Dairy Company and Kiwi Dairy Company, and Deputy Chairman of Fonterra among many others. The two largest governance roles I currently have are Chairman of Southern Cross Health Group and Chairman of FMG — a rural insurance company. I understand that if you elect me as your Mayor I will have to slim down the number of roles I hold.

Although my current governance roles are commercial ones I have done my share of community roles over the years, these include: Ruawai Primary Board of Trustees Chairman (5 years); Northland Events Centre (Toll Stadium) Trustee; Northlands Bid For Rugby World Cup Games Chairman; Equestrian Sports NZ Vice President (5 Years); Northland District Health Board Ministerial Appointed Director and Chair Audit Committee; Kaipara Local Government Review 2013 — appointed by the Minister to chair the independent review of Kaipara District Council’s financial management.

SO HOW WILL I LEAD THE COUNCIL? For me it is about making sure that Council has the skills, capabilities and transparency to ensure we have a clear direction for the future and that we are fully accountable to you, the ratepayers and residents of the district.

TRAINING I would ensure all Councillors receive proper training so that they can fulfill their role. That training would be appropriate to each individual depending on the governance experience they have had and it would be ongoing, funded by ratepayers.

FINANCIAL I would want to understand the state of our current services infrastructure and what capital will be needed to sustain it over the next ten years.

Likewise I would want to ensure our planning was sufficient for our growth, particularly relevant in the eastern part of the region.

Once that baseline is set priorities will need to be agreed, with detailed budgeting undertaken and adhered to.

The biggest single challenge this Council will have will be balancing the need for essential services, replacing worn out infrastructure and managing, through good planning, the growth on our eastern boundary while progressively reducing the huge debt burden we inherit.

I understand and do not underestimate that challenge. Unfortunately that will mean Council will often have to say "no" to requests for money, but that is our reality until our finances are back under control.

I ask you to vote for me if you believe I have the skills needed. I will happily attend candidate meetings and meet with groups. I will however not enter a political process. There will be no “Vote Greg Gent” billboards, that is not my style.

ACCOUNTABILITY The past is even a greater waste if we don’t learn from those mistakes. I would want a suitably experienced INDEPENDENT Chair of the Audit Committee.

I would drive a “cost culture” throughout the organisation. Culture starts at the top. If I am your Mayor there will be NO Mayoral car.

I would hold an “Annual Meeting” of Kaipara District Council.

At that meeting Council would report how it performed versus its plan. The independent Audit Committee Chair and Statutory Auditor would present the financials for the past year. Your scrutiny at that meeting would be welcomed.

STAFF The Chief Executive would be given very clear direction from Council. The distinction between management and governance would be adhered to. I would want evidence that his staff are properly trained, engaged with the organisation and that they are performing. Good succession planning would be put in place.

CommunityConsulting with interested parties will be a key function for Council but after that we will get on and make decisions.

I will ensure a robust complaints process is in place, in the first instance a management function.

At the conclusion of each ordinary Council meeting I would allocate time for anyone who wants to talk to the whole Council, either on an unresolved complaint or a matter of policy, to be able to do so. That should lessen the phone calls to individual councillors and it is an efficient way for you to engage and Council to listen.

Your satisfaction with Council will be measured and be a key performance indicator for the CEO.

Craig Jepson has lived in Mangawhai since 2003, operating an active business in construction and development, and has put his name forward as a candidate for the Kaipara District Council Otamatea ward.

Sarah Kennett has lived in the Kaipara for most of her life and is running for the Northland Regional Council Kaipara constituency.

“I believe in less government and increased decision making at local level. Wherever I work and travel in the Otamatea ward, I see our community do best when they roll up their sleeves and proactively get involved,” said Craig.

“I have contributed time and resources to the construction of the Mangawhai Activity Zone and I chair the Mangawhai Recreational Charitable Trust dedicated to the construction of a public cycle/walkway from Molesworth Drive along the upper Estuary incorporating riparian plantings, public jetty and estuarine boardwalk.”

Craig says promoting further economic and population growth in the district will bring opportunities of employment, improved roads and infrastructure.

“A healthy economy means more can be done to improve our environment. I am very pro development, if you have a strong economy everything else gets looked after including a clean environment and good waterways.

“As a new councillor, communication with ratepayers and residents will be a priority. Our community needs a sense of ownership and partnership with its council.

Sarah’s experience includes communications manager for Northland Police, journalist, property convenor then president of the Northland Playcentre Association, treasurer and chairperson of the Waiotira School Board of Trustees.

These days it seems that the architecture and even the interior decor of our homes are beginning to reflect an eco-conscious trend which was only starting to dawn in the public perception twenty years ago.

Those early pioneers who insisted that there was a better way to live and to build than the wasteful practices of the mid — 20th century may have been seen as fringe outsiders to the old mainstream. But times have changed, and nowadays sustainable homes are seen as the benchmark.

Take for example our means of heating. An old, turn of the 20th century home approached the problem with brute force — fireplaces dotted through the home to perform tasks from cooking and laundry to heating for simple comfort. Fast forward, and most of us will be able to remember electric fireplaces — three bar heaters which burned power as readily as they scorched carpets!

All this despite the fact that underfloor insulation has only become a must-have in homes during the last 15 years, and that insulation in the roof cavities of older houses may have literally consisted of nothing but shredded paper. Today,

paying a little extra for add-ons like solar water heating, heat pumps, ventilation systems, underfloor heating and heat transfer from fireplaces to bedrooms is the norm — and insulation on all sides is too. The next big shift — fuelled in part by a wave of Kiwis reaching retirement age and looking for a place away from the city — would seem to be toward the amenities — power and water. Electricity from the sun, from wind turbines and even from ‘micro hydro’ is made possible by the leaps and bounds in lithium battery technology.

Photovoltaic solar has been seen as such a threat to the ‘grid’ by some power companies that debate has raged about a fair way to implement widespread PV uptake. For those truly ‘off the grid’, there is a great replacement for the old septic system too — combined composting and worm-warm waste treatment systems which can also use the ‘grey water’ from showers and sinks as irrigation. ¢

In landscape design for beginners, patience is the key. If an empty space is too much to look at you can use temporary solutions such as ground covers which grow fast, plant annuals or spread mulch.

Celebrating 140 years u by Ayla Miller

Situated across from the mighty Northern Wairoa river and the band rotunda, the Central Hotel has provided a comfortable place for many a traveller to lay their weary head over the last 140 years.

The hotel was built in 1876 during the Kauri logging and shipbuilding era and was first known as the Kaihu Hotel.

It is said the original building burnt down on the morning of Saturday, February 16 1901.

The fire claimed one victim, a pensioner named James Carmody, who had previously been under the care of a Dr Purchas for some time.

Mr Carmody was found to be missing after the fire and after a search among the ashes by the police, a number of bones were found, which Dr Purchas pronounced part of a human skeleton.

The hotel itself was completely destroyed in the blaze. At this time the licensee of the hotel is recorded as being Mr Edmond Moriarty.

Auckland architect John Currie designed the new replacement hotel and advertised for tenders for the erection of the new replacement hotel in March of 1901.

So, like a phoenix, the Central Hotel rose from the ashes and has been an iconic feature of Dargaville’s CBD landscape ever since.

The Central Hotel has been under the management of Brenda and Paul Jackson for two-and-a-half years now and together with their children Ellie and Wade Jackson they have continued the Central Hotel’s legacy of providing a comfortable and safe environment for their patrons along with hosting popular Wednesday night darts and pool.

The hotel will celebrate their 140th birthday with The Liverpool Street Band on Saturday, September 3 from 1–6pm.

It’s only a matter of weeks away and there’s excitement in the air about Ford’s Blue Oval Roadshow as it rumbled through the North Island, hitting all the major centres before trucking into Dargaville.

This year, as last, there will be a showcase of top Detroit designed steel on display, including the world-beating new Mustang. But the real winners of this engagement are off the tarmac and on the turf — of the local football club.

The Northern Wairoa Football Club mean football in the real traditional sense — that ‘beautiful game’ known as soccer by our own rugbyenthusiast nation.

There’s a strong bond in other lands between Ford and the game of football, as evidenced by their staunch support of a team in their home town of Dearborn, Michigan — dyed-in-the-wool American Gridiron territory! But this is a decision taken by the local face of the brand in the Kaipara, Dargaville Ford boss Lindsay West. Last year, he decided to dedicate the roadshow and its fundraising potential to a club who had suffered damage by unthinking hooligans and who put their heart and soul into each season. The results were nothing short of fantastic.

Maungaturoto’s travelling bags

The Maungaturoto residents association created reusable cotton bags printed with the town’s logo to help make the local area plastic bag free and the cotton bags now travel the world.

“The bags are sold at the markets, Four Square, post office and the library.

They are quite heavy duty and last well,” said president of the Maungaturoto Residents Association Terri Donaldson.

“One of the locals went overseas and they took their bag with them and sent photos back of the different destinations they visited and the travelling bag idea grew from there.”

One person was approached in San Francisco by someone who asked if they could buy the bag as it was so different.

“We have since been contacted by other towns who are interested in making their own and we are already onto our second batch of 500. I use mine all the time. It is so nice to not use plastic.”

Terri says the Maungaturoto community have been beautifying and promoting the town and the bags are a big part of that. “The logo has the hills

and the Kaipara on it. Our town brand is now ‘Maungaturoto — the heart of the Kaipara’.

“Our community has a big heart and no matter what is happening everyone gets involved.”

Terri says the monthly community markets are a big part of keeping this community spirit alive and are going from strength to strength.

Quality second–hand goods, fresh produce, fish, bread, crafts, Tupperware and fresh plants are some of the products available.

“The markets are a great place to socialise and have dinner too. A lot of community groups come in and fundraise and new businesses come along so you can meet them. It is an opportunity for everyone to get to know everyone.” The next market day is Friday, September 2 from 3.30–6.30pm at Centennial Hall, View Road, Maungaturoto. ¢

NICHOLAS, Betty Margery (nee Jefcoate) Passed over peacefully at home on 23rd August 2016, in her 91st year, surrounded by loved ones, her journey complete.

Loving and devoted wife of Ron. Dedicated and much loved mother of Ann, Garry, Vivienne, Kevin, Gay and Carol.

Special Nana to 27 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Gentle and understanding sister, aunty and friend to all.

With sincere thanks to health professionals and workers who have been part of her journey, particularly over the last several years.

A service was held at the Lighthouse Function Centre, Harding Park, Dargaville, on Sunday 28th August 2016.

Followed by interment at the Mt Wesley Returned Services Cemetery.
