Kaipara students of the school were very involved in this charitable work. Alongside their peers across New Zealand, pupils held bake sales, wore blue accessories and brought in gold coin donations to raise money for Starship. Last week, students presented the Starship Foundation’s Kirsty Robinson with a cheque for $14,569.54. “At the core of OneSchool values are care and compassion, so it’s always heartwarming to see our students’ kindness and compassion in action,” said OneSchool Global regional principal Paul Kennedy. “Our students are very aware how much of a privilege health is and want to ensure all New Zealand kids have access to the health care they need and deserve.”

The acceptance, voted in without objection, does not mean that construction starts at the site just north of Dargaville. Instead, it means that a comprehensive public consultation programme is set in motion, with the public able to make submissions for and against the ambitious plan from August 21 through until late September.

“It’s obvious that there is demand, and a need, for more residential and commercial land,” said councillor Eryn Wilson-Collins during discussion of the

plan change. Councillor David Wills said: “If it hadn’t been for the group who picked up this idea and ran with it, then that land found would still be fattening a handful of lambs, rather than making a very positive contribution to the Dargaville community.”

Mayor Jason Smith congratulated the team who have worked to produce PPC 81, which includes comprehensive supporting evidential documentation on subjects as diverse as drainage, historical significance and geology.

“You have given us something very substantial to ‘chew on’, and we are considering this application with great solemnity,” he said.

“I am confident that Kaipara District Council’s systems are ready to capture the ideas and contributions of the community on this issue and allow us to go forth with a very robust process.”

Following public submissions, which will be notified officially in the next week, a formal hearing will take place before possible Environment Court appeals. ¢

Mayor’s Message Kia ora, Success has come for Kaipara District Council at the recent AGM of Local Government New Zealand where our remit to limit and better regulate vape stores was voted upon. It’s very rare for KDC to have a remit at the national AGM of all the Councils of New Zealand, so this in itself was special. 79% of Councils supported Kaipara’s remit, which was seconded by Northland Regional Council. This is a significant contribution by KDC as a small Council to bring to the attention of all other Councils this matter. Dargaville has thirteen vape product outlets within 1km of Victoria Street, and the proximity and unregulated availability of them is a problem for our young people. Between 2018 and 2021, daily vaping rose from 2% to nearly 10% amongst 14–15-year-olds. For Rangatahi Māori 14-15yr olds daily vaping rose from 5.9% in 2019 to 19.1% in 2021. Councils across New Zealand are powerless to help their communities steer away from the bad health outcomes here, and so the remit has recommendations to Government for what’s needed for vaping all over New Zealand. It’s a great outcome.

There is a respite and some reprieve for Mangawhai Museum, which earlier this month made an application to have loans associated with its building’s construction forgiven.

Widespread opposition to the government’s Three Waters plan has culminated in almost 67,000 submissions delivered to parliament, with many individuals selecting to speak to their case, threatening a ‘roadblock’ in the hearing process.

However, the plan that Kaipara District councillors voted through last week falls short of writing the loans, totalling $100,000, off of the books. Instead, council members elected to refinance the loans with only interest payments required. It will afford the council time to formulate a cohesive policy on loans to culturally significant causes, not under the KDC’s direct ownership.

Three scenarios were proposed in the debating chamber, with an initial motion asking for the museum to repay the loan slowly, over 30 years, in a mortgage-like scenario. Councillor Eryn Wilson-Collins suggested an amendment to this course of action, seeking approval for an interestfree loan paid for a similarly extended term to reduce repayments and cause the museum less financial hardship.

“It’s a great resource and a communitygrown initiative. I don’t feel that the recommendation to establish a table mortgage heard the difficulties which they (the museum management) were experiencing. I feel an interest-free arrangement would represent the middle ground,” said Councillor Wilson-Collins.

Councillor Mark Vincent countered with a suggestion to make the loans interest-only. That would allow for the repayment of the capital sum as tourism returns after the hardships of

the Covid-19 era. Councillor Vincent also noted that a formal policy on loans should be formulated before interest-free loans or loan forgiveness are offered to any organisation.

It met with widespread approval as a plan that would satisfy ratepayers regarding the council’s f isc al responsibility, and make Mangawhai Museum’s operations affordable. The motion was carried with Councillor Vincent’s suggestion. ¢

Kaipara fabric artists are being called to contest a crafty competition heading into spring, as upcycled clothing takes the spotlight for a local fashion show.

Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre will host the inaugural Dargaville upcycled fashion contest and fashion show on September 3, with entries being sought now from among the creative community.

“It’s been a couple of years since we have been able to have a fashion show, and it was always a popular event,” says the sewing centre owner Marion McEwing.

“The inspiration came from Sharon van Veen, who crafted a new dress entirely from recycled denim. Since launching the idea of an upcycling competition, we have had a very positive response.”

Recycling old fabrics into new clothes is not a new trend, but it is enjoying a renaissance. There will be three categories in the contest, for clothing, other fabric items such as bags, aprons and accessories, and a section for entrants under 12 years of age. p Sharon van Veen’s upcycled denim dress concept sparked the inspiration for a creative contest Marion says that 80% of each entered item should be completely no limit to the number of entries allowed recycled, though things like zips, a person, so long as they are delivered to fasteners and buttons may be new off the Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre the shelf. The new dementia unit at the Riverview Rest Home in Maungatūroto is now running at a capacity of 13 residents, with one remaining unit being used for respite care, while plans continue for another eight-unit extension to the overall retirement village.

The 14-bed unit, with its large lounge and family room supported by a commercial kitchen, was four years in the making at a cost approaching $4 million, with the community stepping up with widespread fundraising initiatives.

The building fund was topped up with a Provincial Growth Fund grant.

“Plans are forging ahead to add to the facilities, with the ultimate stage being a hospital care facility. Last week members of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust were meeting with architects to discuss the rest home extension and the role further community fundraising will play,” said MCCT co-chair, Graham Slatter.

The Riverview Rest Home and Village was established over twenty-five years ago by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust (MCCT) to service the Maungaturoto District.

Originally set up as a sixteen-bed Maungaturoto Rest Home. The complex has evolved to include a newly built 14 bed Specialised Dementia Unit. Rubbish disposal at the gate and the transfer station is set to become more expensive in the coming months as Kaipara District Council-approved price hikes take effect immediately.

With plans to introduce wheelie bins and a recycling crate scheme temporarily delayed, the core waste disposal service for Kaipara citizens is via Northland Waste, which is facing pressures from inflation and rising government costs. The waste management firm has a user paysbased deal with the KDC to cover landfill and removal costs.

Government levies and emissions trading scheme charges have combined to make handling local refuse harder and more expensive. Council officials have had little choice but to pass these price increases on to the consumer.

Recycling costs are not affected.

“Kaipara Refuse Ltd is incurring increased costs in landfill disposal and transfer station fees at Puwera Landfill and Hakaru Transfer Station, both operated by Northland Waste,”

“These price rises are due to increases in the Consumer Price Index, fuel costs, Emissions Trading Scheme and the waste levy payable to the government for each tonne of refuse disposed to landfill.”

The new price at the gate for trailer and truck loads of landfill waste will be $65 a cubic metre, equating to approximately $182 a tonne. It still compares favourably with the $225 a tonne charged by neighbouring Whangārei District Council.

Kaipara’s blue bags, the primary rubbish removal method for households, would increase in price to $3.60.

It was noted that the upshot of this price rise might be more illegal dumping and that further moves by the government to curb the nation’s carbon footprint may lead to even greater cost increases in future. ¢

Dargaville’s Muddy Waters Gallery is welcoming in a whole new area of the arts, with pottery and ceramic classes made possible by a new kiln.

Art teacher, Micaela van den Berg, will launch the new endeavour at the Dargaville gallery when youth art classes begin for term three. Students who take part in her classes as part of a wider home-school curriculum will be able to sculpt in clay, and adult classes are not far behind.

“We’re very excited about this move,” says Micaela. She is also set to begin a major civic mural project in conjunction with the Dargaville Library.

“Pottery is one of those mediums which is a universal language. It spans time and cultures, in fact, there are no civilisations on earth that do not have a tradition with clay. It doesn’t matter if you have never worked with pottery before — it is very compelling.”

Part of this, reasons Micaela, is the tactile nature of pottery. Unlike sketching or painting, it’s a chance to get one’s hands into the medium, and it’s also a space in which the utility of things like pots, mugs and vases meets beauty and history. Much of our knowledge of some ancient civilisations comes from the decoration on their household and ritual pottery, for example.

Without fireproof clothing, helmets, a truck or hoses, ten Dargaville people put up their hands in 1913 to form the first proper firefighting force in the town.

What motivated these ordinary people to take on a dangerous job at a time when fire was an ever-present threat? Farmers, clerks, tradesmen and timber workers all felt that it was their duty to protect their fellow townsfolk. Their names have rightly joined a roll of honour which stretches to the present day.

Dargaville’s fire brigade is made up of volunteers, and while their latest equipment is state of the art, the heart of the brigade is still people. Right now,

the town’s firefighters are in need of a few more helping hands to join in with a close-knit band of average people doing a job that’s anything but average.

When asked why they chose to serve, most of the local firefighters say that they wanted to do something meaningful to help the community. It is a common feeling, and it drives some to coach sports, join charitable groups or take part in school and church initiatives. Being a firefighter is, perhaps, along with volunteering for the ambulance service, the pinnacle of such civic commitment. While other forms of community volunteering are extremely valuable, firefighters learn the skills to save lives in times of great crisis.

Those who have been on the brigade’s roster for some time say that this can be challenging but very rewarding. Cadets talk about the skills they learn as upand-coming firefighters, and the value of the intangibles they learn alongside things like first aid and emergency rescue techniques. A great sense of selfconfidence and pride comes with being part of a team that saves lives.

Most of all, senior firefighters insist this is not a role just for super-fit, superhuman athletes in their prime. Most

If you were in a fire emergency in the 1970s and 1980s, the sound you wanted to hear was that of a big Ford D-series approaching, packed with firefighters and sounding its distinctive siren.

Alongside the Bedford TK, the D series fire appliances, based on Ford’s dependable D platform, were the backbone of firefighting in rural New Zealand for two decades. Tough, dependable and strong, they lacked modern electronics and provided what contemporary firefighters have called a ‘spartan’ interior. Still, they were able to get to places where other machines could not.

Most of the New Zealand fire fleet of Fords came from the D600 and D800 variants of Ford’s heavy goods truck, designed not in Detroit but Britain. It was there that the first D series Fords were converted to fire appliances. New Zealand took the same route, employing the smaller 82 horsepower diesel fourcylinder, and the bigger straight-six 129 horsepower pattern.

Dargaville’s volunteer brigade deployed a D800, following the same multi-role design as trucks that rolled out from fire stations in Pahiatua, Silverdale, Hastings, Tokoroa and many other Kiwi towns. An extended cab with a raised aluminium or fibreglass top accommodated the crew who would utilise the Ford’s stash of heavy-duty hoses driven by a central

The Ford D600 and D800 are popular with charity rally organisers and promotional companies, having been a fixture of events like the Variety Club Bash. ¢

The first fire truck in the brigade’s garage was a heavily modified Model T, designed to tackle roads that were largely made of mud. The venerable 1923 machine was retired in 1936 and replaced with a more powerful Ford custom-built V8 long wheelbase truck. A third Ford came in 1955 and was paired with a postwar Land Rover to tackle rural terrain.

Dargaville’s D800 was to work side by side with a big Dodge for many years.

Ford’s D Series gained a reputation as real workhorses around the country. While the seating conditions were sparse and many a bruised tailbone was the result of rushing to the rescue on terrible roads, the big dual rear tyres of the Ford and its high weight, coupled with plenty of torque, got the firefighters where they were going, with a surprising amount of equipment.

Volunteer firefighters are at the heart of Dargaville’s brigade, just as they are at the many rural and civic fire stations across Kaipara.

However, in a very real sense, the people who enable those volunteers to answer the emergency siren are the backbone of the brigades. When the first Dargaville bucket brigade was formed in 1911, it took its structure from similar forces set up by the guilds of London in the middle ages. A key part of their charter was that the men of different, even opposing guilds, would mobilise no matter who needed them.

help should the butchers suffer a fire.

The drapers would pitch in to help the stonemasons. A reciprocal web of mutual support meant that a large force of firefighters was ready to act. This same philosophy has come down through Dargaville’s early firefighting tradition and to the present day.

“Employers who contribute by letting their staff answer the fire siren make a huge contribution to safety in this town,” says Jason Campbell, a retail shop owner and firefighter.

With a new Honda Civic Type R just announced, it’s a timely reminder of the legacy of that red ‘R’ badge and how it turned a ‘shopping trolley’ into a legend.

The new 2023 Civic Type R cleaves to a formula that has seen Honda decimate times around the Nurburgring in Germany and boasts a cult following on the streets here in New Zealand. The forthcoming model looks more sleek and uncluttered than the mangainspired spaceship look of the current edition. Still, those signature triple exhausts have been retained, promising a delicious crackle and rumble on the open road.

End of an era for iconic motorsport venue u by Andy Bryenton

One of New Zealand’s top motorsport venues is set to close, marking the end of an era for events such as the V8 Supercars and the New Zealand Grand Prix.

Pukekohe Park is owned by Thoroughbred Racing Auckland, which wants to expand its horse racing activities and consequently is putting an end to motorsport on the circuit. It means a big move for the supercars, potentially to neighbouring Hampton Downs in Waikato.

It also means losing what some consider hallowed ground in Kiwi racing history.

During the 1960s, Pukekohe replaced the Ardmore Aerodrome as the site of the New Zealand Grand Prix. Famous drivers such as Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark and Graham Hill all took to the tarmac. Bruce McLaren took the chequered flag there in 1964.

Denny Hulme raced there, as did Jim Richards and Greg Murphy, plus a veritable battalion of top Kiwi drivers in the V8 supercars league. Aussie icons such as Peter Brock and Dick Johnson regularly came to race wheel-to-wheel with local motorsport heroes. One driver who cut his teeth at Pukekohe is Scott McLaughlin, who has gone on to success in the American IndyCar series.

“To be honest, I watched the Supercars for the very first time there. That’s where the fire for me burned. I wanted to be a race driver from the first point I saw

supercars on the hill,” said McLaughlin in an interview with motorsport.com.

“It’s sad, some of these tracks that are built in residential areas, it’s inevitable it’s going to happen, but especially in New Zealand and Australia. Unfortunately, that’s the way it goes. We’ve got tremendous memories there that we should all be proud of and enjoy for years to come.”

This kind of story is common not just to racing drivers but to many spectators

and fans during the six-decade lifespan of the track. The ‘win a race on Sunday, sell a car on Monday’ philosophy of Ford and Holden during the heyday of the big Commodores and Falcons means that nearly every Kiwi family had a favourite.

They looked to the big race meetings at Pukekohe to vindicate the honour of the car in their driveway.

It wasn’t just the supercars that raced there, either. Everything from screaming two-stroke motorcycles to massive racing

trucks has dared the course in the last 60 years.

Racing will officially end in early April next year. Already, plans are in train for a fitting send-off and a new venue for events that once called Pukekohe home. There may also be time for someone daring enough to claim a final lap record around the grand old track. They would have to be fast to beat the current 59-second sprint achieved by Glenn Smith in his Crawford DP03 Porsche. ¢

Don’t look outside, but spring is on the way, with only a few weeks of official winter left before it’s time to consider a re-emergence into the great outdoors.

Lashed with rain and beset with cold and flu, the winter of 2022 is one we’d like to forget, even as we squelch through the final four weeks of August. The calendar will tell you that September marks the beginning of spring. While persistent precipitation often lingers, it’s not long until daylight saving time rolls around again to roll us out of bed an hour earlier.

However, there’s a sweet trade-off for those who love the long afternoons and evenings. More time to take care of those yard chores which will come bursting up with new growth and life. More time to barbecue instead of resorting to the crockpot or (let’s be brutally honest) comfort food like spaghetti on toast. Let’s not forget, either, more time spent in the shed getting all those fair-weather tools and toys ready for the season.

There’s a certain twist in the DNA of some people (blokes, you know who you are) that dictates no matter their level of ham-fistedness with a screwdriver; it’s a matter of pride to try and fix everything at home. It leads to a conundrum this time of year, as the tarps come off a shed full of largely petrol-powered equipment, some of which has lain dormant since winter came calling.

Have your say: Exposure Draft Kaipara Stand for Council District Plan Candidate nominations are now Consultation on the Exposure Draft District Plan opens Monday 8 August and runs for six weeks until Friday 16 September.

This non-statutory consultation is an opportunity for you to ask questions and provide feedback that can be incorporated into the Proposed District Plan (which will be released next year). Private Plan Change 81 At the July Council Meeting, Kaipara District Council Elected Members unanimously accepted the Private Plan Change 81 (PPC81) request from the Dargaville Racing Club inc.

The PPC81 proposal seeks to rezone 47ha of land on the former Racecourse site. The decision by Council to accept Private Plan Change 81 in whole does not mean that Council has approved (i.e granted) the plan change.

By accepting PPC81, the decision triggers the Resource Management Act 1991 process, where formal public notification occurs. Consultation runs from 29 August 2022 until 26 September 2022 and will include opportunities for the public to lodge submissions and public hearings to occur before the proposed plan change is taken back to Council for a decision.
