 Kaihu Rugby are the first to stamp their name on the Blackie Walters Memorial Trophy after beating Southern 23–18 in the Division One Rugby finals on Saturday. “We have never won a division one championship. This season Kaihu have been the form team and still had to win a final. A big thank you to Southern for an awesome game. They have always been a team we have wanted to beat in the competition. There is a good local rivalry between the Northern Wairoa clubs,” said Kaihu president Graham Hutchings. “Blackies family presented the trophy and we are enormously proud to be the first club to be named on it. Blackie had a huge input into every local club. Both teams are very proud that we have two clubs who came first and second place.

The Kaiwaka community are raising funds to install ‘Pilot Operated Lighting’ and a helipad at the local rugby grounds after a recent incident highlighted the need for the emergency helicopter to be able to land at night.

“A man had a life-threatening medical emergency during the night and the rescue helicopter was not able to land at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex because the floodlights were not on,” said sports association manager, Cheryl Anderson.

“This meant that an ambulance had to be dispatched for him from Wellsford, which lead to a longer wait for assistance. The man in this instance is fine, but a longer wait time could potentially mean the difference between life and death.

“We want the helicopter to be able to land in Kaiwaka during the hours of darkness, as well as during the day. The operations manager at the Northland Emergency Services Trust said his suggestion is for a ‘Pilot Operated Lighting’ system to be installed at the Sports Complex.” The POL is a unit which attaches to the rugby field

floodlights and the pilot can turn the lights on from the helicopter by remote control. The cost of the lighting system is more than $2,000.

“Having the rescue helicopter being able to land 24/7 will benefit our community, and I am hoping that people will see this as a worthwhile community project and be happy to donate money towards it. All donations big and small will be much appreciated for the project,” said Ms Anderson.

As part of their practical learning experience, students from Dargaville NorthTec have completed a 73-metre-long fence at the Kaipara District Council units in Ruawai, managed by the Dargaville Community Development Board.

“We are really grateful to the NorthTec team for helping with the project. The fence was a high priority for safety reasons,” said housing manager Gloria Milich.

Daffodil Day will soon be here, and the Cancer Society Northland is asking the community to get involved in the annual appeal on Friday August 26.

“In Dargaville, Thelma Bagnell’s ANZ Bank team make a huge effort with their annual raffle and sausage sizzle, and the Northern Wairoa Lions Club will oversee the Daffodil Day street collection with the President, Judy Dysart, taking the lead,” said Cancer society coordinator, Natasha Buck.

“Since 2010 the Northern Wairoa Lions Club have done an amazing job. The Cancer Society wishes to acknowledge this team of people and look forward to working with them again on the upcoming Daffodil Day. They are an amazing group that have done a lot of hard work over the years.”

Each day 60 New Zealanders will receive a diagnosis of cancer.

“You can give hope to people with cancer by choosing to help raise money for the Cancer Society and its free support services. Funds raised assist the Cancer Society Northland to provide free supportive care and information such as supporting clients and their families, free accommodation at Domain Lodge whilst having treatment in Auckland and free cancer helpline.

“I first stood for council in 2010 — after being elected found the council was in huge disarray with both financial understanding and direction, and I resigned in 2012 as I could not get support for change.

“I am re-standing with the prospect of working with good leadership. The best run councils in New Zealand are the smaller ones.

“All communities have the right people to look after themselves, it is just getting the right people in the right positions.”

Mr Wade says he believes the role of a council is to provide communities with infrastructure and rules with which they can function and prosper.

“When rate-payers who are shareholders pay their rates, it is not a normal business transaction, as ratepayers are expecting as much of their rates back in the form of services.

“One of the biggest challenges with many councils is ageing infrastructure and the ability and the affordability of replacement.

“The way council does this has to be affordable to the ratepayer. I want to find the best way to achieve this.”

He says councils should build a reputation in their duties of working alongside their ratepayers, enabling them to achieve their aims. There needs to be common goals and shared outcomes.

“Jeanette and I will be retiring here and I would like to be a part of ensuring what we already have is maintained, added to, and potentials realised.” 

Activity park construction begins  by Ayla Miller

The construction of a new activity park in Maungaturoto has been dubbed a project ‘by the kids, for the kids’.

A youth committee made up of Otamatea High School students and Duke of Edinburgh participants have been planning and fundraising for this project since February last year and have exceeded their funding expectations.

“This wasn’t just about the project, it was also about teaching the students what a community committee looked like and how to become citizens of the future,” says committee facilitator Michelle Kemp.

“Small town New Zealand lives and dies in its committees.”

The group have received funding from Foundation North, New Zealand Lotteries, Pub Charities and Kaipara District Council, and the youth committee has raised over $10,000 themselves.

“We are extending our plan because we have done so well with funding. We are looking at a covered seating area and, all going well, some landscaping,” says Michelle.

The site has an existing concrete pad which was set over 10 years ago.

“What was there before wasn’t suitable for anyone and bordering on dangerous as it was slippery and covered in moss. This project’s time had come.

It is two years since Northpower installed New Zealand’s first electric vehicle fast charge station at our Alexander Street substation in the CBD of Whangarei.

Until now we have provided charging at no cost to users. By from September 1, we will be introducing a payment system but putting the rapid charger onto the ChargeNet payment system - using an RFID card that gives you access to the fast charger network. You simply have to tap it against the front of the charger to activate.

The charging rate will be the same as other ChargeNet chargers around New Zealand, 25 cents per minute and 25 cents per kWh of electricity. You can find out more at charge.net.nz

Mr Christensen says the town is long, the road winds around several difficult corners and has the two narrow bridges.

“People have fought for a long time to get solutions to the problem of speeding traffic and it is also difficult when people need to pass trucks.”

He says the breakthrough is also due to the work of Kaipara District Council.

They set up a local community group called ‘Kaiwaka Can’ with Council staff member Annie van der Plas as a permanent liaison person and she attends all the community meetings regarding issues in the town.

“Annie and the Community Liaison team, along with traffic and parks staff have worked very hard to bring NZTA to the table to work these issues through.

This has been the turning point as all three groups have sat down together, along with interest and support people from the police,” said Mr Christensen.

“We are very grateful to Annie and those she works with. NZTA have been creative, supportive and highly professional in the skills they have brought to the project. Now the first two major steps forward have been announced and more good things are to come but this is a great first outcome after a lot of years of hard work by many people.”

Since September 2015 Council and the NZ Transport Agency have been collaboratively working with Kaiwaka Can to get a better understanding of the local issues, and to identify potential opportunities to change driver behaviour, and enhance the amenity of the road environment.

“Together we are producing a Township Improvement Plan that seeks to address speeds through the township, increased pedestrian access and improved visual amenity. This plan

by Council, other by NZTA and others by the community. This plan is now in the final draft stages and is just a small part of what is happening in Kaiwaka.” 

The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. New life for old tram

Helping with walkways

An 103-year-old tram could be given a new lease of life after being used as a bridge on a Ruawai farm for 59 years.

Funding is available for projects that improve public access to the outdoors and groups undertaking projects to enhance access to the outdoors should consider applying for funding through the New Zealand Walking Access Commission’s Enhanced Access Fund.

“There are many organisations doing important work to improve outdoor access. These groups often operate on small budgets and rely on sheer energy, commitment and passion. The Enhanced Access Fund is to help them achieve their goals,” said NZWAC chief executive, Eric Pyle.

“A total of $56,000 is available across two funding rounds in 2016– 2017 to support projects that help secure certain and enduring access for current and future generations.”

Funding will be prioritised towards projects designed to obtain certain and enduring access, such as negotiations to secure access agreements, legal or survey costs, or the cost of obtaining Resource Management Act consents.

Other initiatives such as signage, installation of stiles and activities that improve existing public access are also eligible.

“Improved outdoor access has a wide and lasting impact on quality of life and community resilience.

Better outdoor access helps to bring communities together, helps them thrive and improves regional economies.”

The remains of the old Auckland freight tram 304 were removed last month from the Smith Canal Road farm.

An Auckland based architecture student, who wishes to be known only as William, has organised the removal of the tram and will be cleaning the remains over the coming months in Whangarei.

“At the moment I’m going to be cleaning it up and getting all the mud off. We have got full plans to restore the tram in the long-term future,” he says.

“There are quite a few people who are interested in restoring it, especially at MOTAT in Auckland.”

The tram was bought for use as a farm bridge in 1957 due to its flat deck.

Over the years it deteriorated until all that was left was the chassis, crane,

and some other components, minus the drum and the jib that were stolen in the 1960s and 70s.

In its previous life the carriage was known as the Auckland crane tram which was built in 1913.

The no. 304 was the last tram to operate in Auckland after towing no. 253 and 248 to be relocated for preservation in Matakohe. There are also records showing it carried a brass band down Queen Street in 1919 during peace celebrations.

William says the primary aim is to preserve the tram to prevent any further deterioration and he is calling for anyone with any memories or an interest in no. 304 to contact him at tkwl@orcon.net.nz. 

Tinopai Volunteer Emergency Services Incorporated are holding a book fair and cake stall to help raise funds to erect a building to house the Tinopai Rural Volunteer Fire Force vehicles and a North Kaipara Coastguard rescue vessel.

The Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall committee have refurbished the old entrance doors to the building to display the roll of honour from World Wars I and II for all to see.

“The hall was built in 1952 and they had two honours boards built on either side of the stage,” said acting committee secretary, Lindsey Hargreaves.

“When the 100-year Anzac celebrations were approaching the committee wanted to do something different as part of our hall upgrade project and thought it would be nice if the community and visitors could see the names of the people on the boards more clearly. We decided to put the names of those who attended the wars on the outside of the building for the public to be able to see.”

Committee member Mark Ottaway thought incorporating the names onto the entrance doors would be fitting and that would give them pride of place.

“The Kaiwaka Sports Association sponsored the work for us and committee member Ad Clarijs arranged the etching.” The two doors originally had three glass windows each. These have been changed to a single pane of thick safety glass, with the names etched into the glass.

With the local property market trending upward despite the wintry weather, many folks around the region will be looking to their interior design projects this August. It’s a good thing, too, as the current season’s rain and cold put a literal dampener on any outdoor improvements to the home.

Even appliances are part of this shift toward the professional look, with steel and brushed aluminium ever more popular.

Interlocking water-safe wood-panelled flooring for the kitchen allows a smooth transition from here into the dining and living area and is also useful in that other high-priority area for any home makeover — the bathroom.

Angular chrome tapware and fittings take pride of place next to the new must have — his and hers basins to separate the shaving brush and cologne from the makeup and nail file. Another smart choice — a combination heat lamp, light and extractor to provide warmth and expel steam, making the bathroom easier to keep free of mould and damp in the long term.

A true country living area would not be complete without a fireplace and many of those coming north from the city to seek a lifestyle retirement here will settle for nothing less.

But there’s lots to do indoors and the latest eclectic style, mixing the stark and simple with the baroque and bohemian lends itself perfectly to a creative winter project or two. Crisp, clean walls with little adornment, dark carpets or pale wood-grained flooring and a quirky mix of feature colours and faux-found furniture make up the palette for a thoroughly modern makeover.

Helping preserve history

Advice pays off

Thanks to an observant member of the Dargaville community and a fast response time for the local police, five youths were arrested at the scene of a burglary on the night of Sunday, July 24.

The group of youths aged between 13 and 17 years old, were arrested for breaking and entering an unoccupied commercial building on the corner of Gladstone Street and Cranley Street at about 8pm.

“We put it out into the media encouraging the community to report any suspicious activity and that is exactly what has happened on Sunday night,” said Senior Sergeant Rob Huys.

“A member of the public saw suspicious activity at the building and called it in.”

He said police are on high alert for this type of call. They responded immediately and were able to catch the offenders on site. They arrested the males approximately two or three minutes after they entered the premises. “This result rewards the

public for taking notice of our advice and acting on that.”

There were another five commercial burglaries reported in the area that weekend and police say they are continuing to make enquiries to determine whether or not there is a link between this recent arrest and the other incidents.

“We are considering all options and maintaining our focus on this investigation to make sure something gets done to stop these burglaries from happening again.”

“We thought this would be something different for the ladies to do and we had 37 from all over the district come. Four businesses came along including Charly Draper with her beautiful Christmas boxes and Jo Jury who owns the beauty salon and gave hand massages. It was such a nice evening.”

Keeping the classics rolling  by Andy Bryenton

There’s no logical reason why certain people are attracted to the allure of classic and vintage vehicles.

Sure, if you ask them, they might hint at appreciating values and barn finds which put once-unobtainable rolling steel within the reach of mortals. But the reality of classic and vintage ownership is usually one of hard work, meticulous restoration and endless repairs.

The simple fact that you may have once thrilled to the sight of a brand new E-Type or Thunderbird dominating the highways of your youth isn’t enough reason to attempt the equivalent of automotive resurrection, is it? Surely not. There’s something more, which may boil down to our very human desire to give personality and its properties to the inanimate. It seems cruel and somehow ungrateful to let an old tractor or bulldozer rust away when it’s achieved so much for us humans. It’s almost a crime to watch a car which was once all chrome and power and promise fill up with gorse. If you know what that feels like, you’re susceptible to the classic bug. It may have already got you.

That’s not to say that a restored masterpiece of old-time engineering and design must be a waxed and fragile Sunday driver. Take for example the World War Two vintage Mack which

carries Dargaville company Farrand and Mason’s crane. While other vehicles have refits to just keep moving, this Mack has been refitted more times because the laws around heavy machinery have changed down the years. The crane on its back helped build the Dargaville town hall. It was once bolted to the deck of a REO truck built not long after the death of Queen Victoria. But call the lads, and it’ll be round at your place lifting heavy loads — for a nominal fee, of course.

Because, as those bitten by the classic bug tell you, they don’t make them like they used to.

It’s the same at Dargaville Carriers, who operate a Bedford hauler that’s long in the tooth — but still ready to work hard. This firm’s trucks were known to regularly drop by Invercargill, so miles on the clock don’t necessarily mean parlous wear and tear. Of course, for those with a classic in the shed, the constant need for more time, more money, and more hard to find spare parts creates an often irksome excuse for being off the road. But we’re working toward something.
