 Kaihu Rugby are the first to stamp their name on the Blackie Walters Memorial Trophy after beating Southern 23–18 in the Division One Rugby finals on Saturday. “We have never won a division one championship. This season Kaihu have been the form team and still had to win a final. A big thank you to Southern for an awesome game. They have always been a team we have wanted to beat in the competition. There is a good local rivalry between the Northern Wairoa clubs,” said Kaihu president Graham Hutchings. “Blackies family presented the trophy and we are enormously proud to be the first club to be named on it. Blackie had a huge input into every local club. Both teams are very proud that we have two clubs who came first and second place. It is really pleasing. We want to thank our supporters, committee and sponsors for the massive amounts of energy and hard work they have put into the club for all the years gone by.” photo courtesy Melissa Collins

Speed has been an issue for the State Highway One township and together with the Kaipara District Council, NZ Police and the NZTA, campaigners have achieved what they are calling a ‘major breakthrough’. “We have achieved this because of the hard work of local people. Kaiwaka

resident Ruth Tidemann organised a very successful petition and made the whole town aware of what was happening and we involved our local MP Winston Peters,” said Kaiwaka Can chair, Derek Christensen. continued on page 5…
