As a result of the accolade, the school was awarded a scholarship for a student to attend the World Vision and Sanitarium Senior Scholarship Week to be held in Auckland in October.

Those involved in the 40-hour famine from Otamatea High School selected Year 13 student, Charlotte Huband as the recipient.

Charlotte was selected for her assistance in famine fundraising, empathy for those in need, leadership qualities as school prefect as well as a desire to continue to be involved with famine issues.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to learning new ways to make a difference and how World Vision works,” says Charlotte.

She will attend the programme along with 29 other senior students from across New Zealand and will learn about global issues and develop leadership

 Australian pelicans settle on the banks of the Wairoa River near Dargaville

There was great excitement and a feature on TV3’s Campbell Live as hordes of birdwatching enthusiasts descended on Ruawai to catch a glimpse of the visitors whose ‘beaks hold more than their bellies do.’

The group of 14 are the first Australian pelicans spotted in the region in more than 20 years.

It’s not the first time that these enormous birds have flown across from Australia but never in large enough numbers to establish their own population.

They have managed to fly over 2,000 km across the Tasman Sea and many are hopeful they intend on making the Kaipara their home but the latest news is that they appear to be on the move..

Skipper of the Daisy cruising boat, Kelly Hansen, is one of the lucky few who have sighted the pelicans and thinks they may be heading south. They were first sighted as far north as the

Aratapu bank two weeks ago.

“We were giving up seeing them at all and then we spotted them where the harbour meets the river south of Ruawai.

They seemed to be just hanging out and enjoying themselves and looked well fed,” said Mr Hansen.

Local resident, Anna Curnow and her daughter Molly weren’t so lucky.

“My daughter and I went on a pelican mission on Saturday around the Ruawai region. But all we found were a few flocks of Auckland ornithologists armed with high powered binoculars. There was a suggestion that the pelicans were across the river roosting in a tree but I couldn’t really see anything,” she said.

The Australian pelican belongs to the large waterbird family Pelecanidae.

They are widespread on the inland and coastal waters of Australia, New Guinea and Fiji as well as parts of Indonesia and occasionally like to holiday in New Zealand.

Arts awards prize giving and exhibition

Last weekend we had our first Rugby Training Camp at Londsdale Park, Matauri Bay. The boys were in full form, as they had physical challenges put in front of them. Team building and fitness training played a major part throughout the whole weekend. The boys endured early morning agility runs to kick start their day followed by intense activities to increase their skill levels.

We were very privileged to have Ex Auckland halfback Robert Rush put the boys through their paces, teaching them skills and taking them through a massive fitness regime.

Head coach Morrice Colley was pleased with the weekend saying “there was a good level of effort displayed and the team members are gelling nicely”.

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe are set to hold a prize giving on Friday, August 31 for the Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Arts Awards.

Council closer to adopting LTP Following a public excluded meeting with review team chairman, Greg Gent on August 23, council voted to approve the release to Audit NZ of the long overdue Annual Report 2011/12 and Long Term Plan 2012/2022.

The meeting with Mr Gent resulted from concerns raised by councillors at an earlier meeting on August 21 in regard to affirming council as a going concern and both plans were left to lie on the table pending further consultation with the review team.

Council had been asked to determine whether they believed council was a going concern, as an annual report matter, and whether the LTP was financially prudent and asked to approve release of both documents to Audit NZ so that they could finalise their opinions on both documents.

Councillor Sutherland who had expressed concerns at the August 21 meeting, said that additional information had satisfied her in favour of the release of the documents.

Councillor Linton voted against the release of the annual report, citing concerns that council did not meet the

going concern assumption.

Councillor Larsen voted against the release of the annual report and the LTP, saying he did not believe the LTP was financially prudent and that both should instead be handled by the commissioners.

The report and plan will be presented to council on August 29 for a final decision on whether they should be adopted.

This will be one of council’s final official duties before ministeriallyappointed commissioners take over late September.

In other council business, Councillor McEwing officially apologised to CEO, Steve Ruru for comments made at a previous meeting, in which he said he had ‘no confidence in Mr Ruru and the review team.’

Councillor McEwing said, “I am 100% supportive and fully endorse the CEO. My comments were made in the spur of the moment, were lacking thought and subject to receiving further information, things have been clarified. I officially apologise to Mr Ruru and the review team.”

In the afternoon the Lighthouse Function Centre will host a convivial luncheon — be there from 1pm for live music and all the refined delights of race day, then get ready for the main event. Race Night begins at the town hall at 7pm, complete with a ‘fashion in the field’ extravaganza, music from R & B Connection, and the chance to bet on the horses . . . not real gambling, but a bit of fun complete with race books featuring real Melbourne Cup thoroughbreds.

Payout to CEO revealed Since Mr McKerchar resigned last year, council has rejected requests for information about the severance deal from Mangawhai ratepayers, who have been leading the ratepayers strike.

They then referred the matter to the ombudsman who eventually instructed council to release the information.

Mangawhai residents and ratepayers’ association chairman, Bruce Rogan is now seeking answers as to the conditions or agreements that were entered into connected with his departure.

“There was no reason for a golden handshake let alone a platinum one.

There’s something seriously irregular.

He either resigned from the position, in which case he would not be entitled to a payout or his contract was terminated in which case we would like to know the grounds for termination of the contract.” said Mr Rogan.

“While many believe McKerchar led the councillors into irregular rating activities, among other things, and should not have been paid at all, it must be remembered that councillors are responsible for governance and hence are responsible for the conduct of the CEO,” said Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association chairman, Ron Manderson.

Mr Manderson said they will be asking for a full retrospective enquiry so both McKerchar and councillors have a chance to clear their names or be held to account.

Retired lawyer and Mangawhai ratepayer, Clive Boonham, said that many ratepayers in his area considered Mr McKerchar had a key responsibility for the council’s major problems.

It was reported that when asked about his resignation, Mr McKerchar said he’d stopped having fun and now he had his life back.

The Kaipara Lifestyler asked Mayor Tiller what parties at council were involved in negotiating the severance package, whether he believed Mr McKerchar is responsible on any level for council’s current financial situation and if the severance payment was a fair amount.

Mayor Tiller said he is unable to discuss the payout because of the need for council to meet its legal and good practice obligations as an employer including the need to protect personal information.

Council is required to disclose details of the severance payment in its annual report due for release shortly.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Give a bird a bad name  by Brian Eastwood

It was a debate that went on for many years. Were shags, especially the Black Shag and Pied Shag, goodies or baddies?

From 1890 until 1940 acclimatisation societies often paid a bounty on the heads of shags. It was thought to be a good day’s work to head out and kill as many as possible During an investigation into mullet numbers in 1895 the mate of Kaipara paddle steamer S.S. Osprey gave evidence that there were thousands of shags on the harbour, causing in his opinion, the decline in fish numbers. He advocated culling by a reward system.

Early Maori solved the problem by eating the kawau (shags) and breaking their eggs.

But bird lovers and ornithologists argued that these birds of the cormorant family did more good than harm. By eating eels that ate fish spawn, the shag actually helped the fish population to increase.

Kaipara Fishermen’s Association insisted that shags ruined harbour fishing by eating live fish, especially mullet and flounder. The fishers asked

Government in 1922 for a £100 subsidy to help wipe out the birds. It was refused on the grounds that it would not be practical to try and kill them only on the Kaipara.

Down in Rotorua Acclimatisation District, where they were thought to be hosting a parasite found in trout, the Internal Affairs Department was paying a reward of one shilling per shag head. That was increased to  Black Shag (Black Cormorant) two shillings and sixpence in 1926. In the South Island shags were was learned about their diet because it was early in the morning and their said to be killing salmon.

Mangawhai’s Market Grows  by Julia West

Looking for a huge range of fresh food, lovingly preserved specialities and local produce direct from the source?

Then look no further than Mangawhai The Mangawhai Saturday Market actually began as an organic market in Kaiwaka in 2000. It was later moved to Mangawhai to capitalise on the holidaymakers who come to the beach at weekends and throughout the summer.

Nowadays the market offers a broad selection of fresh food and produce, much of which is locally sourced and still organic. You’ll find freshly baked bread, cheeses, honey, olive oils, cured meats, smoked fish, grains, preserves, dips, and wine.

Sam’s Butchery, which sells a range of cured pork products, recently won a Gold medal 2012 for their ‘maple dry-cured oak-smoked bacon’.

They were up against 85 competitors and 159 different bacons for the prize.

Marita Draper, coordinator of the market, says, “we get a number of customers from Auckland at the weekends who tell us they do all their weekend shopping here.”

There are also stalls selling skincare products, clothing, jewellery, children’s books, dolls outfits, bric-a-brac, wooden products, second-hand books, seedlings and plants. You can get your jewellery cleaned or watch batteries changed

at one stall, and most Saturdays a massage therapist is available.

Takeaway cafe-style food and fresh coffee are also on offer.

Stallholders range from small business owners to hobbyists, lobbyists, ex-city dwellers, and retirees from as far afield as Ruakaka, Pahi,  Local olive grower Teresa Anderson — a regular at the Mangawhai Markets Paparoa, Matakohe and Warkworth.

Three sisters come from Kaiwaka to sell their crocheted and knitted rugs, vests, hats and scarves.

HEADING TOWARDS

CRUNCH TIME

Our senior students are now heading in to the crunch time of the year. A question I often hear from parents is “How can I assist my child to study better?” There are quite a number of different things I am able to talk with parents about – and the areas I mention in this article are some of the areas that in the past they have told me they find useful.

1. Help your kids tap into their particular learning styles Finding out your kids’ learning styles can help you understand additional elements that support their natural learning and increase the effectiveness of their study time. Every one of us learns through Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic means, or modalities. Visual learners remember best through what they see, auditory learners from what they hear, and kinesthetic learners from movement and touching.

Although each of us learns in all three of the modalities to some degree, most people prefer one over the other two.

If you identify your son or daughter as a visual learner, pictures, graphs, charts, and other organisational tools are most helpful for learning and retention of information; it helps them see the big picture. Those students with an auditory preference benefit from hearing the information; they learn best when they have the opportunity to recite information aloud and remember best what was discussed. Kinesthetic learners learn best with physical manipulation of information; they like the hands-on experience and they memorise through actions related to the content.

2. Help your student realise what’s in it for them Attitude is David Bargh, Principal something that comes into play for students every day at school and at home when they study. A student may enter some classes excited to be there, and enjoying the teacher and the subject.

Maybe he or she enters other classes “knowing” that the class will be boring, and guess what... the class is boring.

Some students spend half their days at school wishing they were somewhere else, doing something else. How successful do you think they will be with that attitude?

The quickest way to achieve an attitude adjustment in your son or daughter, if one is needed, is to help them realise what’s in it for them. Ask your son or daughter, “Why would you want to learn what the teacher is teaching?” The answer may be as simple as, “So I can pass my exams.” And why would you want to pass your exams?

Maybe I’ll get more free time; maybe I’ll get into the course I want to go to. Why would you want those things? So I can be more successful in life. By understanding what’s in it for them, students will find that their time in class and time spent studying has far more purpose. Attitude is a small thing that makes a big difference! Afternoon of fun at Settlers Club

The cheerful chatter of old friends getting together filled the Lighthouse Function Centre with happy sound when the Northern Wairoa Settlers Club held their meeting last Saturday Club President Nick Puharich explained. “Actual proceedings don’t start until midday but most members like to arrive around ten thirty to have a good old yarn and to catch up with everyone. Numbers were down a bit to forty from the usual fifty because of flu, and for various other reasons.”

Before lunch was served, Nick welcomed everybody and especially the eight visitors from Auckland. Each of the guests had family links or their own connections with Northern Wairoa.

After the day’s raffle winners collected their prizes, the club was entertained by the harmony of ‘Take Six’ ladies choir who sang a number of well-chosen songs. With two on holiday the group of six was actually whittled down to four, but they promised one hundred percent performance and they certainly delivered on that.

Frank Vilich, a former Dargaville resident, continued the afternoon’s fun playing his piano accordion to lead a sing-a-long of old favourites. Frank will be remembered as a popular entertainer with his accordion band playing around this district during the fifties decade.

DARGAVILLE POST OFFICE.

A

t yesterday’s meeting of Kaipara Chamber of Commerce, a letter from the Post Master General was read referring to the question of erecting a new post office in Dargaville. It pointed out that the present site measured only 48 feet by 43 feet and even if land were taken at the back it would not be large enough to meet future requirements.

The site offered at the corner of Hokianga Road and Normanby Street with a frontage of 505 feet and a depth of 182 feet was a suitable one.

Mr. Jones said it was no use for people cavilling amongst themselves about the site and thus delaying the erection of the new building. Chamber was unanimously in favour of the Hokianga Road site.

Fun show with a serious message Wellsford School recently invited the New Zealand Playhouse to perform a ‘Phone a Friend’ play for senior students as a fun way to educate students about cyber bullying With the growing use of electronic devices in schools and the community, cyber bullying is an increasing concern.

While ‘Phone a Friend’ is a humorous story it also sends a clear message to students about how to deal with situations appropriately if and when they arise and acts as a platform for further classroom discussion.

Wellsford Student awarded Hillary Silver Student samples airforce career Kevin Baker recently spent five days at the RNZAF base in Auckland, eating at the airmen’s mess and sleeping in bar racks and is now keen to pursue a career in the airforce

Alana is hoping to go to Great Barrier Island for her final gold experience and her chosen task is to snorkel and familiarise herself with the Hauraki Gulf reserves and marine life.

A year 13 student from Rodney College, Kevin was one of 40 students selected from over 140 entries to take part in the Air Force Challenge.

Students were given a taste of each section in the airforce including intelligence and force protection and visited squadrons, viewed aircraft being prepared for flight, saw weapons up close and subject to aircraft and crew availability, flew in a Seasprite and C-130 Hercules aircraft.

The students were treated as though already part of the airforce and were placed in teams of ten

to battle against other competitors.

Kevin said “it was one of the best weeks of my life and most of the other participants said the same thing.”

The students were identified by their school careers advisor as being interested and motivated towards a career in the RNZAF. Kevin has already begun the process to join the airforce by filling in an application form while at the base.

Rodney College student, Alana Torrie, has risen to the challenge and been presented with a Hillary Silver Award for her efforts.

“The value of the awards is that they are a great personal challenge and you learn not only how to lead, but also how to be a great team player; you learn a lot of life skills and best of all, it is great fun,” says Alana.

Alana has been part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary programme for four years which is designed to build leadership, self-awareness, skill competency and a sense of identity.

Achieving a silver award requires an extended period of training and meeting test requirements.

For Alana’s final test, she completed a four-day, 80km trek to Lake Waikaremoana in the Te Urewera National Park.

The journey required navigation by compass, carrying the food and equipment and camping out.

“There were six students from various levels of bronze to gold. It was amazing with fantastic views and in such an untouched environment. We tramped for eight hours most days,” says Alana.

As one of those sceptics, I am now going to vote for the necessary constitutional changes needed to implement Trading Among Farmers at Fonterra’s forthcoming Annual General Meeting in November 2012 Dairy farmers’ demands to the government and the Fonterra Board that Trading Among Farmers (TAF) must retain 100% dairy farmer ownership and control is, I believe, enshrined in the proposed Trading Among Farmers.

Fonterra is currently conducting Rural Professional Roadshows on Trading Among Farmers throughout New Zealand, explaining to rural professionals, bankers, and sharebrokers what they need to know about the proposed changes.

While it all sounds very confusing, with terms like Fonterra Shareholders’ Market, Farmer Trust Custodian, Units, Fonterra Shareholders’ Funds, the underlying theme ensures 100% dairy farmer control giving the opportunity to farmers to reinvest profits back into the company, through the purchasing of extra shares on which they will receive a dividend. Dairy farmers will be able to increase their shares up to 200%, from the current 120%.

I believe this will encourage many of our more wealthy dairy farmers to reinvest in Fonterra, rather than investing in high risk finance companies. We have watched over 30 New Zealand finance companies crash over the last three years and overseas- owned banks having to be bailed out by the New Zealand government guarantees.

Farmers will be able to buy and sell shares on the Fonterra Shareholders’ Market on any business day to match production.

Farmers will be able to trade on Fencepost or through a broker or get Fonterra to arrange it for them.

New shareholding can be purchased based on a threeseason rolling average, smoothing out seasonal fluctuations and helping cash flow. Milk however, that is not backed by shares will not receive the full milk price until fully paid up.

Farmers selling their farms do not have to sell their shares with (in 24 months) (now) (in 12 months) (in the farm and can sell over a three season period and reinvest in the Fonterra Shareholders Fund. At the moment new entrants are required to front up with all the cash for the shares.

Sharemilkers, with an eye to the future, can start building towards an eventual shareholding in Fonterra, by purchasing units in the Fund.

In setting the Farmgate Milk Price, the Fonterra Board will always set the milk price and that right is not negotiable. This is set in accordance with the Farmgate Milk Price Manual and 0% INTEREST the Milk Price Principles which are all publicly available. Gidday. Me, Billy BC and ya mite as well know that the winter haymakin’ has come ta tha end. The Boss came back.

Scared tha hell outa Sharlene an’ her Mum too, cos’ tha Boss’s ute just come ova tha cattil stop without warnin’.

Boss had parkt it in Orklind at ‘is mate’s place, an he ‘parently flew inta tha earport frum Yourup late at night, and cos of sumthin’ corled jet lag, he coodint sleep ina morning and he got up erly and drive home.

Well, ya shuda seen Sharlene and mum’s faces, cos’ they had pinched summa tha Boss’s whine froma woolshed wile he was in Inglind, an’ hadn’t bin ta that store ta replace it.

But they didn’t havta wurry rilly ‘cos wena Boss had give them a hug each, he grabbed a whole lotta bags of stuff wiv his luggij ofa ute.

‘Here y’are Sharlene,” he sed. “Got us a whole lotta wine frum tha duty free.”I cood see Sharlene and Mum was reel releeved. Than Boss startid ta unpack, an he had a whole lotta otha

stuff for them too. There was a pitcha of sumthin’ corled a Eyeful Tower from a Place corled Parris fer Mum, an’ Sharlene gotta necliss tha Boss sed he found ina anteeks market in France.

Wen’ he’d done that, he give me a wissil an’ sed we hada hava look atta stock ona proppity.

So we headed up the race towards tha ridgeline. We wuz a but away fruma house wena Boss give me a wink.

I reckin tha Boss needs ta go ona holiday a lot mor offin. He’s come back a bit olda, wisa, and a bit fatta.

Yep. Back atta house, we sat ona terrace ‘an Boss give me a cracka an a bitta patay.

Now, wile I did missa Boss win he was away, I’m glad he went ona holiday.
