They kept the home fires burning

“War clouds gathered as the Germans invaded Poland …

p Students at Tangiteroria School chose a character from their favourite books to dress up as for book week last week. “Children and teachers dressed up for our parade day gaining points for their house. We had a lot of fun with a shared morning tea,” says librarian Jilly Martin. “Books are a fabulous way for children to learn. So many things have gone online with computers, but it is nice to have a tangible book to help children with their imagination. We had the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, Pippy Longstocking, Sherlock Holmes and Alice in Wonderland to name a few characters on display. Dressing up expands children’s imagination as they portray how their character looks. Our school has a very extensive library and every Friday the children choose a new book to take home for the week. Funds raised from sales during the week will go toward new readers for the pupils, and each student chose a book to add to the school library.”

A small gathering at dawn last week to bless the land and the project was a quiet start to what will be a ‘gamechanging’ regional project, according to stakeholders. When finished, the Kaipara scheme alone could store as much as 12 million

cubic litres of water. The reservoir is just one in a series, which are planned to be built by Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust on the northern Pouto Peninsula in Kaipara and the Mid-North around Kaikohe. Combined, the water storage and distribution schemes would

allow landowners to plan potential land use with confidence and would support approximately 7,000ha of new horticultural development, a 50 per cent increase in Northland’s current area under production. continued on page 3 …
