The council asked the Government to appoint independent commissioners after the ministerially-appointed review team briefed council on a report which was presented to the Minister of Local Government on August 17.

The review team led by Northland businessman and farmer Greg Gent and supported by Leigh Auton and Peter Tennent, was appointed in June 2012 to consider the financial and governance challenges facing the Council.

The Minister will now seek Cabinet’s agreement to appoint commissioners.

Roller Mills update The Northland Roller Mills Rugby team is on track with a convincing win in their first hit out against a North Harbour representative team last Saturday. In the first of five pre-tournament games, the newly formed Northland Roller Mills team beat an open weight Silverdale representative team by 3414. Northland took an early lead in the game with great communication between the players and good commitment levels from the players, securing three first half tries.

Silverdale came back into the game with two tries early in the second half of the game, which was then countered by a resurgent Northland in the last quarter.

After the game, Coach Maurice Colley said he was “happy to get the first game under our belt, particularly pleasing that it was a win”. Maurice also added that “…. now knowing exactly where our strengths and weaknesses lie, it helps to form our training plan for the next six weeks until the tournament in Auckland”.

The squad has a team building and training camp this weekend in Matauri Bay that is designed to build the bond between players. This team bond is critical to success in the Roller Mills tournament with six games over the course of a week.

Northland Rugby Union has been very supportive of the Roller Mills squad, with All Black great Bruce Robertson taking a session about mental preparation for their trainings and games.

The Roller Mills tournament venue has now been confirmed as Teachers Eastern Club in Orakei.

The Duffy Theatre group, part of the Duffy Books in Homes initiative, performed at Paparoa Primary recently to spread the message that reading is cool.

The initiative was set up by Alan Duffy to inspire children from low decile schools to read and develop a love of books.

Each term children are given one or two books and when children show positive behaviour they are rewarded with extra books at assemblies.

“It’s been a great incentive to encourage children to read and they love it. These types of initiatives

are what schools need to support reluctant readers,” says Paparoa Primary principal, Nathan Vickerstaff.

Mr Vickerstaff estimates that 1000 books have been given to Paparoa children in the past four years.

Tinopai School joined Paparoa to watch the theatre performance about Duffy’s discovery of the best book in the world.

“Theatre is another way to get the message across that reading is cool and it’s an immediate and interactive thing for children to get involved with,” says Duffy theatre manager, Sarah Graham.

The new Anzac Cinema has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the ASB Community Trust taking them one step closer to their target.

“This takes us another big step forward and of course affirms the work we have been doing to get the cinema up and running. The total cost is around $450,000 — we probably need another $15,000 for ‘front of house’” says Dargaville Cinema Trust member, Josie Scott.

Builders are donating their time and Grant Waldron and Denis Honore have just completed the foundations and bearer upgrades required for the Anzac Cinema located in the War Memorial complex on Hokianga Road.

Mr Waldron and Mr Honore are relieved to be moving on to the next stage because the work required crawling on hands and knees to lay foundation.

“It was a gruelling job and we can now proceed to the upper floor — phew,” says Mr Waldron.

The community can show their support by buying hoodies and T-shirts at Walden’s Shoes in Dargaville with all the funds going directly to the cinema.

“The other thing people can do is help us raise awareness. Spread the word, let people know and of course, once we are open — come along,” says Ms Scott.

Campaign continues on hazardous bridges  by Kim Munro

Concerned residents from Matakohe continue to lobby the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) to widen the hazardous single-lane Hardies and Anderson bridges and are set to hold a public meeting in September along with a petition to present to the NZTA A meeting was held earlier this year with over 70 residents attending along with a representative from the NZTA. Dennise Brownlie, co-organiser, has witnessed first-hand many accidents over the years as she lives on the stretch of road between the Anderson and Hardies bridges.

“A number of short term remedies were discussed at the meeting but overall it was disappointing and we will continue to campaign,” says Mrs Brownlie.

The NZTA has actioned a number of short and medium term measures to improve sightlines on the approaches, along with new signage and a safety review of give way priorities and signage.

There is a plan to renew the wooden deck on Hardies bridge over summer, however local resident Bobby Smith knows the bridge well and considers the bridge particularly unsafe in the winter.

“The bare boards on the bridge are dangerous. If you brake suddenly there is no traction at all – it’s like driving from tarseal onto ice. It’s dangerous for bikes and if a school bus

School buses, milk tankers and logging trucks all travel over the bridges daily along with tourist coaches who visit the nearby Matakohe Museum.

In March this year, Matakohe farmer Sue Reyland and her daughter Krystal, were hospitalised after a head-on accident on Andersons bridge which blocked the road for two hours. The driver of the mobile home also involved in the accident was airlifted from the scene.

“There are many close calls because people don’t give way or stop in time,” says Mrs Reyland.

The bridges do not meet NZTA criteria for widening which include accident rate

and traffic volume statistics, structural soundness of bridges, cost of works versus economic benefits and prioritisation of the matter by the Northland Roading Committee.

MP for Northland, Mike Sabin has identified the issue as a key area in the North and a priority.

“I have been researching the history of the bridges, accidents and the rationale behind NZTA refusal to date to replace the bridges and realign the road and I will be using information obtained to try and better demonstrate a business case that meets NZTA criteria to do the works required,” says Mr Sabin.

“The bridges in my view present a significant safety hazard and an economic risk to the Kaipara area if there was a significant outage.”

Aside from being the major route into the Kaipara from SH1 and Auckland, it is also the direct route for dairy farm milk to reach the dairy factory at Maungaturoto.

The Dargaville laboratory service has six full time staff members, two of which are long serving employees — Delwyn has been at the lab for over 30 years and Sally for 28 years. “Some people get queasy just looking at a needle but the wonderful staff are full of chatter to distract you, especially if you get the new chair where you can put your feet up,” says Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive, Debbie Evans The staff provide 24 hours a day, seven days a week care for 365 days of the year and take on average 70 blood samples per day. They are also on-call servicing the needs of hospital inpatients.

Prominent artists to judge awards A distinguished panel of judges has been selected for the upcoming Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Arts Awards.

The judges are well known to the Kaipara region and have exhibited internationally Colleen Urlich is a highly regarded artist from Dargaville. She is a strong believer in tradition, decorating with patterns from traditional weaving and taniko (ornamental border) or by adding flax fibre, feathers or shell to her works. Colleen has spent many years in service to the community and national art committees. Her work has been exhibited internationally in USA, UK, Australia and Canada.

Bev Taylor is recognized as one of New Zealand’s leading representational artists. Bev has had many successful one-man exhibitions in both public and commercial galleries in NZ, UK and USA. His paintings are much sought after

and hang in collections throughout the world. He is highly regarded in the field of landscape and still life and especially for his rural scenes and his superb portrayal of poultry. Bev immigrated to NZ from England in 1972 and lives in Kaiwaka.

Manos Nathan is from Dargaville and has been at the forefront of the Maori ceramic movement. His involvement with clay emerged from a background of wood carving and sculpture. His clay works draw on customary art forms and on Maori cosmological and creation narratives. Manos has participated in and promoted cultural exchange programmes with first nations peoples

Fine fare and music Music at the markets An appreciate audience gathered recently to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and fine food at the Mary MacKillop centre in Hokianga Road, Dargaville.

The afternoon was organised by the Sacred Heart Catholic Church as part of their senior citizens outreach programme with over 40 guests attending from the community, rest homes and the masonic lodge.

“We always have a great group of people who appreciate what we do and we welcome anybody who wishes to come along,” says co-organiser, Maria Holster.

Entertainment was provided by Leo Glamuzina who played the accordion and Geoff Hall who sang and played guitar and ladies from the parish provided afternoon tea.

The aim of the programme which has been running for 10 years is to give back to the community and is an initiative between the church and the ASB Community Trust.

Wellsford New beginning for Handy Hardware owner

Michael Rudd is staging a comeback after a serious accident and has recently opened a hardware and home brewing kit store in Wellsford While dismantling scaffolding in Te Hana, Michael slipped and fell on concrete. He broke both his heels but has recovered and is open for business.

“The store has been my comeback after the accident,” says Michael. Originally from Auckland, Michael and his family moved to Wellsford eight years ago.

“We were passing through, stopped for a cup of tea and a toasted sandwich — next thing you know we are looking at real estate windows and we’re buying a house.”

After his wife passed away three and a half years ago, Michael now a solo dad has opened a hardware store for a lifestyle change.

“It’s a way for me to be a hands-on parent and my son has somewhere to go after school,” says Michael.

Happy FATHER’S DAY It’s that time of year again — the time to get out and shop for the ‘man who has everything’ — and who surely doesn’t want another pair of socks!

Fathers’ Day is not a religious holiday, a seasonal celebration or indeed a historical oddity — it’s a more modern invention designed, or so many would have us believe, to boost the sale of deodorant, underpants and tools around the end of winter. Nothing could be further from the truth, however — and dad will tell you that Fathers’ day is a proud old tradition honouring the most important (and handsome, and modest) member of the family through the ancient ritual of breakfast in bed followed by a few hours of trying to put out the fires and rebuild the kitchen.

This is rarely the case, however — most kitchen disasters actually occur on Mothers’ Day, when the lady most competent with what he still calls the ‘indoor bbq’ is trying to sleep in.

There are many ways to celebrate your dad and all he’s done for you — from the traditional box of beers and an argument about sports all the way through to buying him a hot lap of the racetrack in a V8 supercar. Recently it’s become fashionable for dads to get ‘big boy’s toys’ for Fathers’ Day, and you may note local stores stocking radio controlled cars, helicopters and tanks for the middle aged kids who live among us.

Smoked fish, kumara and watercress pie There’s not many things in this life better than going fishing with Dad — the one exception that comes to mind being tucking into that catch once it’s cooked! Here’s a fresh idea for that smoked fish fillet which is sure to please… and even better, a cold slice or two can go with Dad to work to be the envy of the lunch room!

You’ll need A nice big piece of smoked fish (bones out) Enough savoury pastry to line a family sized pie tin…

And enough flaky pastry to make the top!

A good handful of clean, fresh watercress Three big locally grown kumara Some butter, garlic, salt and pepper A dash of cream, and; A tablespoon full of mushroom soup powder

Start by breaking up the smoked fish

Equally popular is the concept of the ‘even bigger screen tv’, along with the ‘even louder stereo system’ and, for very wishful dads, the V8 supercar which you’re allowed to take home. And which doesn’t come with batteries.

In reality, the single best gift you can give this Fathers’ Day is your time — pay a visit, make a phone call, book a table, open a bottle of something nice and make this a family affair. And whether you’re giving him a picture made of glue, glitter and macaroni or a brand new Aston Martin, remember — it’s the thought that counts. At least until Christmas…

Try not to eat it all at this point!

Peel and chop the kumara into small cubes for faster boiling — get them on the stove Push the savoury pastry into the pie pan and trim it to fit (remember it might shrink a little) ‘Blind bake’ the bottom of the pie by cooking it in the oven at 200 degrees C with a sheet of paper tucked in where the filling should be. Weigh the paper down with rice or dried beans — remember, this is just a weight to keep the pastry in the right shape — you’re not going to eat it!

After about 15-20 minutes (you’ll see the pastry turn golden) remove the ‘blind’ pie crust, gently take out the paper and the rice or beans and set them aside.

By now the kumara will be boiled soft. Drain it and give it a quick stir in a hot pan on the stovetop with butter, salt, garlic and pepper.

Just as the kumara is getting golden brown around the edges, add in the cream — just enough to moisten the smoked fish which follows. Stir the kumara and fish mixture about until the flavours are well mixed together. Chop and stir in the watercress for a delicious peppery taste.

Now gently stir in the mushroom soup powder

— it does seem a little like cheating, but it will thicken the mixture nicely and make it taste great!

It’s important to get the amount of cream just right so that this thickening isn’t overdone… or underdone. The finished pie filling should be thick and sticky, not liquid at all.

Spoon it into the blind baked crust, patting it down to fill the whole pie.

Now make the lid of the pie from a circle of flaky pastry. Make sure to prick some ‘vents’ in the lid for when you take care of the final bake… and a simple egg and butter glaze can add a beautiful finish to the lid.

Bake the finished pie at 200 degrees C, until the lid is golden brown and puffy. Times will vary depending on the size of your pie tin, of course, but as the filling is already cooked (or smoked), the only prerequisite here is that the flaky upper crust is just as nice as the main body of the pie.

Allow to stand, then carve into slices and serve with a mixed salad. If left until cool, the filling should be solid enough to withstand cutting into pieces and slipping into a lunchbox.

There you have it! A pie made entirely from local ingredients — including Dad’s catch of the day.

Local landmark turned hot rod heaven The historic Maungaturoto Hotel has seen some big changes this year, with its growing status as both a colonial icon and a centre for good times attracting visitors from the Kaipara and beyond.

Last Sunday there was yet another reason to stop by the stately old tavern — a collection of wild, customised and classic hotrods, cars and motorbikes spanning decades of motoring history.

Chevvy, Ford and Chrysler sat side by side with Triumph and Harley, all differences of brand pride put aside for a day of fun in the early spring sunshine as acres of chrome and flames went on display for a good cause. This year’s inaugural Maungaturoto classic car and hotrod show may not have been as huge as the mammoth event at Kumeu, but the quality and variety of vehicles on display was stunning, as was the relaxed atmosphere which made this show truly family friendly. Let the engines roar for a worthy cause Pouto has long been considered prime territory for off road bikers — whether it’s the dunes or the forest, the peninsula has played host to many happy hours of petrol-powered action on two wheels over the years. Many local riders got their first taste of offroad action at Pouto, and numerous others have fond memories of trail rides past…

Which brings us to this year’s main event, the 2012 Pouto Forest Trail Ride in support of the Te Kopuru volunteer firefighters. What better way to get behind those dedicated local heroes than a day of fun and adventure with your mates or your family?

This year’s course features a scenic 40 kilometre loop through sandy allweather forestry tracks, including brand new sections, shortcuts and some great trails action. For the kids there’s a fully supervised four kilometre loop — the perfect way to get started in a lifetime of offroad riding!

The response from previous years has been overwhelmingly positive, with riders coming from far and near to take part in what is not only an exciting day of motorsport, but also a chance to give a little back to the volunteers who make Te Kopuru and its surrounds a safer place to live, work and play.

Letter to the editor Brickbats and bouquets On behalf of many past councillors of the Kaipara district who stood and worked for the area and were prepared to, and gave thousands of hours of their time and mileage for very little and in many cases, no remuneration.

It was their district, they weren’t there for the money. Things and standards of some councillors have certainly changed since, they are now being so well paid and fed.

Some councillors are blaming the mess the district is in on their CEO, but if that is the case, they are as much to blame for doing nothing about it.

To the group who talked our existing Mayor into changing his mind and standing again, to keep out Bill Guest, who was challenging what was happening in Council, you must also share the responsibility.

Bill has been proven right, and look at the state we are in now. In this criticism I include the previous council, who must also share the blame.

Never in living memory have so few done so much damage to so many in the Kaipara. Your incompetence has let down every ratepayer in the district.

Shame on you.

A big thank you to Bill Guest, Jonathan Larsen and Andrew Wade, as well as the people of Mangawhai who had the courage to stand up and be counted.

The Kaipara district is indebted to you.

Also thank you to Greg Gent and your team for your efforts in continuing to get us out of this mess.

Scholarships for school leavers Northtec are offering scholarships to school leavers for three degree level programmes in 2013 — Bachelor of Applied Management, Bachelor of Applied Arts and Bachelor of Applied Social Services.

The bachelor scholarships mean that a student can study in their first year without paying fees, a saving of between $4000 and $6000.

Recipients must be a Year 13 secondary school student enrolling directly from secondary school and meet the entry requirements for the chosen programme of study.

Northtec selects applicants who can demonstrate sound academic ability, are passionate about further study, are willing to communicate

future aspirations with peers and want to achieve career goals through further education and training.

Students are required to apply online and their application needs to include a short essay outlining why they are a deserving recipient of a scholarship, what they hope to achieve from their study and what their career goals are.

There are scholarships also available in sport and recreation and applied environmental sciences areas with up to $1000 in fee reductions.

Wellsford Community Choir invites people to come along and sing their hearts out “I just want to get people singing,” says Sally Randall co-founder of the new Wellsford Community Choir, “no experience is needed, just a desire to sing!”

Wellsford residents Sally Randall and Anna Pendred have obtained funding from the Auckland Regional Council’s Creative Communities to start a community singing project.

“This is a rare opportunity to participate in 10 weeks of singing for a gold coin donation each week,” according to Sally. Practices will be held at the Wellsford Community Centre on Sunday afternoons from 3-5pm, beginning on 26th August 2012.

Professional choirmaster Max Maxwell will lead the choir. His

passion lies in bringing people together to create harmony and rhythm in song. ”The aim is to provide an affordable opportunity for adults in the area to get together and experience the joy of singing in a group,” says Sally.

“People from ‘16 to 86’ are welcome and no auditions are necessary.”

“Singing is so good for general health and wellbeing”, adds Sally, “it feels good, enables deep breathing and simply lifts the spirits.”
