The council asked the Government to appoint independent commissioners after the ministerially-appointed review team briefed council on a report which was presented to the Minister of Local Government on August 17. The review team led by Northland businessman and farmer Greg Gent and supported by Leigh Auton and Peter Tennent, was appointed in June 2012 to consider the financial and governance challenges facing the Council. Once appointed, they will take on the tasks of council and the mayor, while the mayor and councillors’ names will remain on the register in name only with no function and no remuneration.
