“There’s a choice of the afternoon matinee performance, or the Champagne Gala in the evening,” says WAG’s Lorraine Rowlands.

“Both shows are the same and will include a marquee reception, with nibbles, enter tainment and a cash bar. Then the performances begin.”

The show will feature weird and wonderful creations that have made the WAG event a magnet since its inception in 2006. Judging and prize giving will follow the evening performance.

“Among the entertainers will be the WAG Dance Troupe, under the tutelage of Penny Goodall and they will be introducing the show and three categories, Sci-Fi, Rubbish and Bloomin’ Ridiculous,” Ms Rowland said.

Squash fundraiser  Otamatea College student, Michelle Shimanski was nothing if not enterprising as she sold tickets to a Maungaturoto Squash Club fundraiser last Saturday.

She staked out Hurndall Street to sell $15 dollar admission tickets to ‘it’s in the Bag’ to take place that night at the Maungaturoto Country Club.

“Ticketholders will be asked four questions and if they get them right, they’ll be offered ‘the money or the bag, like the old radio quiz show,” said Michelle. The evening raised $1,490 towards sending a team to the D Grade national squash champs in Tauranga.

Seven Kaipara citizens honoured

All seven nominees in this year’s Kaipara Citizen of the Year Awards have been recognised for outstanding service to their community.

They were honoured at a ceremony at The Lighthouse conducted by the chair of the Kaipara District Council commissioners, John Robertson and fellow commissioner Colin Dale.

Each nominee received a special commemorative lapel pin and a framed certificate plus flowers and a native plant gift at the presentation. The event is now in its 13th year, and Mr Robertson said he was ‘humbled by the achievements’ of those honoured and said the list of service and achievements among the winners was impressive.

Neville Collins’ 18 years of community involvement spans working with the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Dargaville Little Theatre, the Dargaville Scouts where he has been treasurer for more than six years, as well as years of work

for numerous other organisations were also recognised.

Jacoba Puharich was recognised for her many years work as a social worker with Northland Health, The Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust, Kaipara Abuse Prevention, the Northern Wairoa Patient Advocacy Group, the National Council of Women, and many other local organisations and clubs.

Many years of working with sports groups and young people saw Vern Stevens called to accept an award.

Vern has coached local rugby, netball and swimming teams, was treasurer of the Southern Rugby Club and President of the Northern Athletic Club, Northern Wairoa Primary School Sports and Dargaville Swimming Club and has been

involved with the Kauri Coast Community Pool since 2005.

Jo Yuretich was awarded for her nonstop involvement with the Mangawhai community, through the local Plunket Society, the playgroup and kindergarten, where her fundraising has seen a boost in educational toys and equipment.

Along with this Jo is involved with the Mangawhai Domain Committee, and is president of the Friends of Mangawhai Beach School organising numerous fundraising events.

Another Mangawhai resident recognised for her tireless youth service was Sandra Grayson. Along with her own five children, Sandra has provided foster care for several young people, is involved with the volunteer fire brigade and was instrumental in the formation of the Mangawhai Army Cadet Unit, which currently has 54 young members under her command.

The highly successful cadet unit has been acknowledged by local parents, the Hakaru RSA and NZ Police. Making up a Mangawhai trio was Judith

Langmuir who has spent many years as volunteer librarian for the Mangawhai library, committing many hours of her experience. The gathering heard how Judith is responsible for selection, purchase and bar-coding of all books, is in charge of work rosters, helps with administration and also promotes new library membership.

Josie Naysmith, a dedicated supporter of the local RSPCA, has rescued and cared for many cats and dogs and in the process has promoted companionship for the elderly by matching animals with suitable human friends. She has worked for many years promoting animal welfare at school events, and has been responsible for arranging work experience for local young people while assisting in career guidance.

Josie has also coached junior rugby, netball and gymnastics and for 23 years has been involved as a dancer and tutor with the Dargaville Dalmation Club’s Kolo dance group. Another highlight of the afternoon was music provided by the Dargaville Tamburica Orchestra. ¢

Local body nominations Five Kaipara candidates will contest the single available seat on the Northland District Council in the October local body elections.

They are Rochelle Butt, William Guest, Jonathan Larsen, Graeme

Ramsey (sitting member) and Andrew Wade.

There are seven seats available on the Northland District Health Board and two local nominations are Debbie Evans and Libby Jones.

16 years and still going strong In the David and Goliath world of today’s radio, Goliath usually holds the winning hand, but in Dargaville, there’s a David alive and well in the shape of Big River FM. For 16 years, in good and sometimes quite bad times, the station has been surviving against big-time commercial odds, quietly serving the community at every level.

Unlike the Kaipara’s other low powered FM stations, Big River is a licensed community station, which means it’s under government rules and costs, but has to survive on its own.

Station Manager Anaru Tana says they receive almost no external funding and rely totally on advertising revenue and community donations.

Big River also provides valuable on-the-job training for interns from the New Zealand School of Radio in Tauranga and usually has two or three on site, learning the ropes before moving on to full time jobs.

Anaru says community radio is the hardest of all radio formats to successfully deliver as it is about community service.

“We have to provide something for everyone, so we can’t just concentrate on one type of music or programme. We also interact very closely with our audience at all levels

and this defines who and what we are — community radio.

“Some criticise our sound, but that is what a station like ours is about.

It’s about a variety, things of interest to the community and by nature, that is not always going to be slick, hyped up ads at 100 miles an hour and just one type of music that only appeals to a narrow group. We try to be a little of all things to all people — our people.”

And after 16 years, it has to be said Anaru and the team may just have it right. ¢

Te Koporu School looking very smart The approach and entrance to Te Koporu School has had a whole new look thanks to recently completed gardens and surfacing.

Principal Lee Anderson says Dargaville landscaper Greg Newman was contracted for the job and along with new concrete paths and car parks, low maintenance native plant gardens especially designed for the climate and often strong westerly prevailing winds were created.

“The old approaches were cracked and broken, quite hazardous and just not attractive at all, so we asked Greg to come up with a design and we are delighted with the finished product.”

Lee says the security fencing now being installed is the final touch to the $60,000 plus project, but adds it is money very well spent as the whole school looks so much smarter and welcoming. Meanwhile — students are working hard towards their end of term stage production, “Haki and the Kumara Vine” which has more than a nod to Jack and the Beanstalk, but with a distinctly local interpretation and promises to be a lot of fun. Fishing quota cut ‘disaster’  by Alan Wheatley

Public apathy and disinterest over changes to fishing quotas could have a serious long-term impact on the Kaipara coast and time is running out.

That’s the view of long-time Kaipara identity and harbour warden, Des Subritzky, who says despite placatory comments from politicians, the changes could still happen, and adds that those opposed to it only have until this Friday to make their voices heard.

Under the proposed changes, catch limits in snapper fishery one from East Cape to Cape Reinga, could be reduced from nine, to three or four, which Des says will see a massive influx of recreational fishers to the Kaipara, and the impact will be disastrous.

“There is no doubt the impact on the Kaipara coast will be immense.

More than 90 per cent of all juvenile snapper on the west coast of the north island come out of the Kaipara Harbour and irreparable damage will be done very quickly if these changes go ahead, as fishers will come over here in huge numbers.”

Des says what will also happen is that catch limits here will then have to be reduced as a result and that will impact everyone.

“And that will happen fairly quickly because the impact of big numbers of fish being taken by ever increasing numbers of recreational fishers will be immediate.”

Des has a simple message to anyone who is concerned over the proposals becoming law. “Put in a submission. It doesn’t need to be a huge document, just a few lines will do, but if everyone

He says the peoples’ voice has been heard in the past, citing changes in how close in shore fishing trawlers are now allowed.

“We pushed it out to one nautical mile, then to two, but it was the combined voice of the people that made those changes happen — and we have to do it again over these proposals, because if it happens, we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves.”

Rugby was the theme of the afternoon as five students will play in the Northern Roller Mills tournament at North Harbour next month.

The visit by the members of the Northland team was organised by the school’s head of PE, Terri-Anne Takulua, whose husband Tane was among the guests. ¢

The ferns were gathered by Mary Ariell, a member of the pioneering farming family after whom a hill is named between Paparoa and Maungaturoto. ”Among the pressings is a king fern, the 'para' after which the Kaipara is named,” said museum CEO Bet Nelley.

“Doug raises ferns and takes them to the Mangawhai markets. So I knew he would be interested.”

Mr Shaw, who is a consulting analytical chemist, said the presence of

the king fern was confirmation it once ranged widely over the Kaipara.

“But it was a valuable food source for Maori, and then later, it would have been devastated by wild pigs, so it has largely disappeared. I have a theory that it might still survive around the Brynderwyns but it's only a theory. I'd certainly be interested to hear of any.”

The king fern still flourishes in some parts of it's range from Taranaki into Northland, and it lives on too in the Kaipara, from Mr Shaw's nursery. ¢

Ms Yeabsley said most organisations that have submitted and wish to appear before the committee will have 10 minutes to speak.

The brevity and location of the hearings has been slammed by the chair of the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association, Bruce Rogan, who says “hundreds, if not thousands of ratepayers will not be heard.

“It now transpires that the committee will spend one day in the district listening to the public’s views and it will do that only in Maungaturoto.”

“Thousands of ratepayers have been affected by past mistakes and the current rate increases of 40% and more.

“It would be at least seen to be fair if there were meetings in Dargaville, Mangawhai and Maungaturoto to allow some of our biggest ratepayers to attend. I guess you can't expect city folk to understand the beginning of spring in the country.” ¢

Classics cruising to the Kaipara again The Maungaturoto Hotel is no stranger to old-time nostalgia — the whole building is a Kaipara classic, with a storied past and a new, restored look thanks to its new management.

So it’s fitting that this local landmark is the backdrop to the Kaipara’s biggest celebration of classic cars and hotrods, bikes and choppers on the 25th of September — and it’s all for a good cause, too.

Maverick monsters the Baja 500 A good Samaritan pit-stop to help out crashed fellow racers snatched the gold from Desert Toyz racer Cory Sappington’s grasp, but just finishing the Baja 500 is an achievement.

The Baja 500 is regarded as one of the most dangerous, grueling and potentially deadly races in the world — a high-speed thrash through desert, rocks and sand which has claimed many victims in the form of mangled wrecks.

The unforgiving terrain is far from asphalt roads, and the power and speed required to win are matched only by the guts and skill of drivers such as the legendary Mickey Thompson who have become Baja legends.

This year saw a field of UTV side by side vehicles set off into the desert, but most of this pack suffered catastrophic breakdowns and crashes along the way.

Negotiating his way through the hazards to a podium finish, Sappington, racing in a modified Can Am Maverick

1000cc UTV, made second place in his class, narrowly missing the gold due to two punctures, and a stop to offer aid to fellow Maverick drivers of the Murray Racing / Del Amo Motorsport team.

For a while there the Murray / Del Amo machine had enjoyed a commanding 30 minute lead, but a high-speed crash on a tricky ravine section put them out of contention, and indeed out of the race entirely.

Cory had to use ingenuity during the race, repairing his own fuel pump cooling system and heat deflector on the fly to finish. But many, many hot and dry miles later he claimed a podium finish, beating strong competition which included the Monster Energy team’s own Can-Am Maverick 1000, as well as numerous p With minimal modifications from stock, Cory Sappington’s Maverick 1000 scored a podium finish in this year’s demanding Baja 500 desert race — beating opponents across many vehicle classes

Senior Constable Jim Corbett

Students at Kaiwaka School kicked off a long-term environmental project recently when they spent time planting a large assortment of trees, shrubs and other plants around the school grounds.

Especially well remembered in Dargaville and Ruawai, Senior Constable James John (Jim) Corbett passed away peacefully in Nelson on the 12th August.

The tree and plants were donated by the Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust as part of their on-going Cultural Education Trail and Marae Biodiversity Project to involve Kaipara primary and secondary schools.

Kaiwaka School Principal Rosemarie Ellis said students really enjoyed digging, planting and nurturing the plants which she said would enhance the school community for many years to come.

She added it was a Whanau group project, led by Whaea Mina Paikea and Matua Luke Connelly.

He was aged 87 years.

Jim was born at Turua near Thames but was brought up on a farm in Kio Kio in the King Country, a few kilometres out of Otorohanga.

Newly weds Jim and Alice Corbett were sent to Dargaville in 1952 where it was a time of only a few police cars and the town was usually patrolled on foot. The couple stayed on to live in Northland for more than twenty-five years From Dargaville they shifted thirty kilometres south in 1960 to the sole charge Ruawai station and became part of that community for nine years.

Their son, Jack (Chris) Corbett, recalls that when not catching criminals, “Dad was a keen fisherman and spent time, often with Dargaville Hospital Superintendent Dr. Bill Crisp and Tikinui man Tony Erceg, catching snapper down at Pouto on the Kaipara Harbour.”

It was Jim Corbett who discovered the bodies in a vineyard cottage after a triple murder at Toka Toka in 1965.

From Ruawai, Constable Corbett transferred to Kaikohe Station to spend a further nine years before being posted to Auckland, from where he retired in 1985.

Of their family of four boys and a daughter, all were born in Te Kopuru except the youngest son born in Paparoa. Since retirement Jim and Alice have lived variously in Kaikohe, Orewa and Auckland, shifting to Nelson four years ago.

A private funeral service was held last Thursday in Nelson. ¢
