The Kaipara District Council is implementing an ongoing restoration programme at the Taharoa Domain by planting trees to re-establish habitats but this year it is steering clear of planting natives susceptible to myrtle rust.

Manuka, kanuka and pohutukawa are off the list because they are affected by the fungal disease which has been found in a total of 91 sites in the Bay of Plenty, Northland, Taranaki, and Waikato.

“In early May 2017, prior to this year’s autumn planting, myrtle rust was found in a nursery in Kerikeri, the first detection of the disease in mainland New Zealand,” said parks and community manager, Sue Hodge. The Kerikeri nursery in question supplies

plants throughout Northland including the local Kaipara nursery used by the KDC. “To ensure that myrtle rust infected plants are not introduced to the Taharoa Domain council will not be planting any manuka, kanuka and pohutukawa this season.

“We will keep an eye on the situation and may reassess this decision after the summer when there is likely to be a better idea of what is happening across the country,” said Sue. ¢

A new shearing record

A star in the making

Ruawai-raised Matt Smith has broken the world solo ninehours ewe shearing record at a stand in Britain with a new tally of 731 in the first global shearing record attempted in the Northern Hemisphere.

The previous record of 721 had stood for more than nine years since being set by Hawke’s Bay shearer Rodney Sutton in 2007. Matt’s brother, world champion, multiple Golden Shears, and New Zealand champion Rowland Smith, was with helpers on the board

at a Cornwall farm last Friday. Matt now lives and farms in the United Kingdom with his wife Pippa.

Shearing Sports New Zealand spokesman Doug Laing described the event as “one of the biggest world records in shearing sports.” ¢

Jamal Mafulu-Dick was recently selected to play in the Northern Swords rugby league under 13 team which took home a silver medal at the North Island Districts Tournament in Rotorua.

After getting the call up only two weeks beforehand, Jamal who plays on the wing was the only Dargaville player to bag a spot in the youngest Northland representative team.

“It was awesome, it was a cool experience,” he said.

The Northern Swords played five games in total only losing one and managing to take home the silver medal and second place.

In between the busy schedule of games the team were taken to the hot pools for some rest and relaxation.

Jamal said he made lots of new friends during the tournament and is already looking forward to the next trials for the U13 national tournament which happens in September.

He spends his weekends playing for the Northern Wairoa Bulls and switches codes to play rugby for the Western Sharks.

Mum, Dana Dick said she was ‘so proud’ of her son’s efforts and is looking forward to seeing what Jamal’s rugby and league future holds.

A community dinner organised by two Matakohe school mothers has raised a huge $11,700 to help nine-year old Jazzlyn Martin fight her ongoing battle with cancer.

Cilla was excited about the prize including glamping at Donnelly’s Crossing Highfield River Retreats as well as letting her son experience a ride in an aeroplane. The raffle raised over $8,700 towards the sporting complex and Bev would like to thank the many ‘generous’ sponsors. Second place winner was Julie Chiaroni #1325 and third place was Northern Wairoa netball #0323.

“Jazzlyn has a life-threatening brain tumor,” said Di Hardisty, who with Nic Hawkes came up with the dinner plan, with the event held earlier this month at the Matakohe Memorial Hall..

“It was an outstanding success, with a three course meal, raffles and donations mounting up to $10,000 and with donations still coming in, we went down to Auckland where Jazzlyn is undergoing a long course of radiation treatment following brain surgery.

“Unfortunately, most of the treatment plans are not subsidised, so giving Jazz the best chance had hit a brick wall and an empty pocket.

“But we handed over the cheque and she and her Mum were just stunned. They could not believe that a small community like Matakohe was able to raise so much and make such a difference for them.”

Jazzlyn still has ongoing treatment to face in Auckland, “But they asked me to pass on their massive thanks to everyone who has helped the fundraiser,” said Di. “And that goes for Nic and myself. Thanks to the Lions, Read the newspaper online

The Taha Awa Riverside Gardens Trust has been working with the Kaipara District Council on a system of monthly garden inspections and quarterly meetings to check on improvements and progress.

Major undertakings include a complete overhaul of the swamp garden and work on laying a power cable. The cable will allow a phase three power supply to where the annual ‘Christmas in the Gardens’ concert is held. The second part of this is due to happen as the ground dries. It will re-contour the land around the pirate ship and grass the entrance.

Minor changes include the saw sculpture being completed and a seat and lavender added to the grape arbour.

Also the olive trees at the entrance are no longer in isolated raised beds, but

are part of a continuous garden from the gate to the end of the trees.

More planting is yet to be done this section.

Chairperson Lyn Trounson said: “I think we can look back on a year which achieved a significant amount…

They are now looking so much better than the gardens of several years ago and it would be a shame to lose any momentum we have generated.”

The trust is looking for new members to keep the momentum going.

Wearable Arts tickets on sale Dome Valley safety plan Tickets are on sale now for Dargaville’s Wearable Arts Extravaganza. Entries are in and sponsors are secured, so the buzz for the September event is building, says co-organiser Cheryl Carmichael.

“We are really excited with the number of entries both locally and from other parts of Northland. We have a full night of entertainment planned for the audience over the two nights, including a range of performers, mystery prizes, high end supper and refreshments” said Cheryl.

There are two opportunities to see the show — Friday and Saturday, 15 and 16 of September. “This is such a major event and the designers put so much work and time into developing their creations, that it was decided that one show wouldn’t be enough to satisfy audience demand.”

They are all highly appreciated and without this enthusiasm from Dargaville business people stepping up to support this event for our town, it would never make it to the stage,” said Cheryl.

Kaipara’s link to the south is getting a new upgrade with work planned to improve safety on SH1 through Dome Valley due to begin next year after public consultation.

The proposed changes include widening the centre line and road side shoulders and installing flexible road safety barriers along the 15km section where steep slopes, unexpected corners and poor visibility make safe driving a challenge.

Seventeen people died and another 42 were seriously injured in Dome Valley crashes between 2005 and 2016 with drivers losing control and running off the road or crossing the centre line and hitting an oncoming vehicle.

“By creating wide centrelines we will reduce the risk of head on crashes by separating traffic, while safety barriers help catch out of control vehicles before they hit something less forgiving such as another vehicle or trees, poles or ditches,” said the Transport Agency’s system design manager, Brett Gliddon.

“We are also making the route safer for cyclists by creating a wide road-side shoulder right through the Dome Valley.”

The shoulder will also continue at the top of the Dome where the northbound and southbound passing lanes will be replaced with wide shoulders to make the approach to the summit safer.

“More than 10,000 vehicles travel through the Dome Valley every day, and with those numbers increasing we need to get these improvements underway now to reduce the risk of more people being hurt or killed in a crash.”

Plans for the improvements will be refined over the next few months, based on feedback from local communities with construction due to start in mid-2018. ¢

Members of the Kaipara community are encouraged to help contribute to an online portal holding the stories of New Zealand service personnel which will be available at the Kauri Museum until August 30.

The concept which was developed by Auckland Museum contains the records of approximately 150,000 men and women who served for New Zealand from the 19th century through to today.

CEO of the Kauri Museum, Lisa Tolic said with the help of local communities throughout New Zealand, these records will continue to be enriched and updated for future generations to remember.

“The digitisation kiosks allow people to search the online cenotaph, lay a virtual poppy against a specific person’s name and contribute additional information to the database,” she said.

Over 65,000 people have discovered their connection by using the online

portal kiosk. As well as storing information, each kiosk contains an ‘object’ photo booth that enables users to digitise their family’s warrelated items such as medals, diaries and letters. The digitised objects are then uploaded to the relevant service person’s online cenotaph record. “While the process is user-friendly, our team at The Kauri Museum are more than happy to assist,” says Lisa. The Kauri Museum is open 7 days from 9am-5pm and has free entry for residents of the old Otamatea district.

The Maungaturoto-based Linking Hands health shuttle has marked up a distance of 95,372 kilometres, more than twice around the globe, as its vehicles shuttle people to medical appointments.

The community service, run by donations and volunteers, picks up people who have no transport and takes them to medical and hospital appointments. It covers the areas surrounding Maungaturoto and Mangawhai in the Kaipara with a team of more than 40 volunteer drivers, one van with wheelchair access, and two cars.

A volunteer committee also runs the organisation, with newly elected chairperson Ngaire Kramer, treasurer Rita Bartschi, secretary Sue Johnson, Mangawhai co-ordinator Bruce Hunt, funding co-ordinator Bruce Lydiard, publicity co-ordinator André van den Berg, Estelle Lydiard, Cindy Vincent and Wayne Wrack.

Safely working around electricity

Ensuring people are safe around our electricity network in Kaipara and Whangarei Districts is critical.

We are constantly working hard to ensure people working around our lines understand the importance of safety and the correct practices that must be carried out in order to keep them safe.

There are health and safety regulations and codes of practice which must be followed by electricity lines companies, contractors or members of the public.

When working under lines it is imperative to stay outside the Minimum Approach Distance (MAD) of 4m.

When working near overhead lines or power poles it is a legal requirement that you follow the minimum safe distances as set down by New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice – NZECP 34:2001 Electrical Safe Distances. This document is available from www.energysafety.govt.nz All work activity must be kept at least four metres from overhead lines. If you need to work closer to our overhead lines you must get a Close Approach Consent from Northpower which takes two working days to process.

Another important rule is that you cannot dig within five metres of one of our power poles without a Close Approach Consent.

And depending on the depth of excavations, you may need additional pole supports to prevent poles collapsing.

Call Northpower Faults on 0800-10-40-40 and we will advise you of your requirements and will provide supervision in some cases.

You must always check for underground electricity cables before starting excavation.

Progress in reducing erosion risk

Northland Regional Council is seeking public reaction to a plan to help Northland Emergency Services Trust with a $9.8 million loan, to help fund two new rescue helicopters for the region.

The Northland Regional Council has just completed the second year of a four-year Kaipara Hill Country Erosion Project.

In the Kaipara catchment 23 percent of its 474,000 hectares are identified as hill country with high erosion risk.

In 2015, NRC received $666,000 from the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Hill Country Erosion Fund to help restore the catchment.

So far the council has helped 54 high risk erosion farms make plans, covering 16,000 hectares. Plans have included stopping grazing on 48 hectares of high risk land.

Other plans involve planting 4,000 poplar trees, and applying for the Afforestation Grant Scheme, as part of an MPI programme to reduce soil

erosion, improve land-use productivity, store carbon and improve water quality.

“These are encouraging results that are a credit to our land management advisors and the landowners they are working with,” said council chairman Bill Shepherd.

“I think this shows what can be done when people work together with a common goal. We’ve made a start on reducing Kaipara’s erosion, though it will be some time before we see significant results in terms of reduced sedimentation in the harbour. This is a long-term project to right a longterm problem.” ¢

With its current aircraft needing to be replaced soon, NEST has identified two suitable Sikorsky S-76C helicopters.

Council chairman Bill Shepherd says the regional council can access better interest rates through the Local Government Funding Agency and use this for a $9.8 million loan to save NEST around $200,000 in interest.

While it would involve about half of council’s borrowing capacity, the loan would not affect rates.

“Rescue helicopters are a critical service for the region which, as previous feedback from our community has told us, is really valued by Northlanders,” said Mr Shepherd. “We want to check in with our community before we make

a final decision, and we encourage people to give us their feedback on the proposal.”

The regional council has supported the rescue helicopter service for the past eight years through a targeted rate, and currently provides NEST with $525,000 per year from its contestable fund for emergency services.

“It’s important to emphasise that this new proposal doesn’t change any of the existing funding. Rather, this loan would be an additional way we can support NEST and the provision of emergency air rescue services in Northland.”

There’s a new season coming, heralded by the annual Auckland Home show — and, like every year, it’s sure to usher in a new twist on what’s fresh and funky for the home. It’s been a winter of growth for the residential real estate market in the Kaipara, leading to a busy time for local tradespeople.

Headlines have touted a new high in average property prices across the region, now outstripping other parts of the north as the half-million mark is surpassed.

It seems that the top things in the world these days are all battery powered, or at least battery assisted. Elon Musk has his super train, the Hyperloop — and of course we’re now told that by 2040 most of Europe will be driving Teslas. Even the McLaren P1 has a battery, and that’s the fastest thing with a Kiwi on it this side of our brand new space programme.

So it’s no surprise that smaller, lighter batteries have made their way into the garden shed as well as the garage. When things once thought to be exclusively the domain of King Petrol turn electric, there are those who insist that they will be like a 1980s cellular phone — brick heavy, powerless, and harder to operate than

the space shuttle. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.

Since the turn of the millennium, Hyundai have been scoring accolades and awards for their big seven-seat family adventure wagon, the Santa Fe SUV. Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor? With smart use of space, and a factor not found in many large seven seaters — that’s how.

When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings.

From the ‘floating’ centre console which allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink cans as well as American-sized drivethru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up.

The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing should there be something in the way) opens to reveal enough space to stow a small castle siege’s worth of supplies. The coldest part of winter always comes before spring, and that’s certainly true this year. But frosty conditions have failed to slow down the creative energies of our local Kaipara residents, as evidenced by the flurry of activity happening across the district for three big artistic events.

First up, the Otamatea Repertory Theatre present a live theatrical twist on an enduring classic - Rudyard Kipling’s whimsical and adventurous Jungle Book. Adapted many times for the silver screen to rapturous reception, this live performance is full of music, action, comedy and thrills. The ORT is only the second theatre in the world to stage this new, updated Jungle Book, and tickets are on sale now for shows spanning the 4th to the 20th of August.

Meanwhile, artists of another sort are preparing their entries for two large competitions set to light up the runway and the gallery scene in September.

August is a month of hard work and inspiration for entrants to both the Kaipara Art Awards, open to both two and three dimensional works, and for the inaugural Kaipara Wearable Arts Extravaganza, which will wow audiences
