The 76km ride was undertaken last month at the suggestion of Kaipara District Council which wants to include the beach in the New Zealand Cycle Trail, which — when completed — will provide a dedicated cycle route from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Ms Taylor says she and her brother completed the ride in five hours. “It was a challenging ride with the wind and frequent showers of rain but definitely worth it.” She says that along with the tides, cyclists need to factor in the wind. “If you are cycling against the wind it could take up to three times as long, which would make the cycle hard to finish in one day. Options to get around this would be ensuring you have a support vehicle, choosing to camp along the way or exiting at Glinks Gully rather than Baylys. “The ride is definitely possible to do but weather and tides mean the level of difficulty will change significantly depending on the conditions. Also, if you want to keep your bike in good condition, it will need washing and oiling after the ride, as it will get full of sand, salt and plankton.” The ride also served as a fundraiser for Suzannah and Theo to take part in October’s World Vision Cambodia Cycle Challenge. Ms Taylor says thanks to the support of sponsors she has now more than achieved her $3500 target, although Theo still has a way to go. The Cambodia Challenge is a 10-day cycle

ride visiting a number of World Vision projects that aim to improve living standards and provide locals with safe drinking water. Meanwhile Kaipara District Council is still evaluating the outcome of the Ms Taylor’s ride. Spokeswoman Barbara Ware says the
council will then talk with the New Zealand Cycle Trail, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Far North District Council. “Everything we do needs to be agreed with the NZ Cycle Trail. They pay for signage and marketing, although we’ll install the signs.”
