The island has a ‘sister city’ relationship with Dargaville due to a link between their Jomon Sugi cedar tree and Tane Mahuta in the Waipoua Forest. A grant received from Fonterra in 2017 enabled the school to fence off an area for the orchard and purchase 16 fruit trees. Fonterra Kauri supplied compost, and the fruit trees were uplifted from their temporary site to their permanent positions. The vegetable gardens were cleared, and seeds were sown. p Twenty different community organisations were represented at a recent workshop at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Dargaville, offering practical advice to all committee members of non-profit organisations. The workshop was lead by Sandy Thompson from LEAD Centre for Not for Profit Leadership, and provided tools to assist boards in adding value to the work they do.

Kaipara district residents, Kapehu Marae and animal advocacy group Direct Animal Action teamed up to protest outside Tegel’s headquarters on the day that would have been the beginning of the council hearings to decide the fate of the mega chicken farm.

Kaipara local, Karen Exley, said the protest was planned to keep the pressure on the Tegel and encourage them to withdraw their application altogether.

“We’re protesting because even in the face of large-scale opposition from the community, the health board and both the regional and district councils. Tegel has not withdrawn their application — only suspended it to give themselves more time to develop arguments for the proposal.

“We want Tegel to realise they’re not going to get away with stalling tactics and we plan on keeping up the pressure by protesting and fundraising.”

Direct Animal Action spokesperson, Deirdre Sims, says they wanted to let Tegel know they would stand side-byside with Kaipara locals.

“A large proportion of New Zealand is really disappointed in Tegel after the horrific animal suffering we revealed at one of their farms last week.

“The Ministry for Primary Industries is investigating, and we’re still awaiting the results, but we’re hopeful of a prosecution. In addition to Tegel’s poor animal welfare practices, their bullying of the Kaipara locals and Kapehu Marae over the mega-farm is just unacceptable.

Tegel hasn’t been listening to Kaipara’s concerns — but luckily the rest of New Zealand has.”

A hearing agenda released on July 16 included reports from Northland Regional Council and Kaipara District Council, which recommended the application was declined. Tegel later requested a delay to the hearing

date to allow time to obtain more information to address points raised in the reports. The company was given 112 days from July 18 to recommence the hearings.

Tegel Foods Ltd corporate affairs and communications manager, Liam Baldwin, said Tegel remains committed to working with the Arapohue and wider Dargaville community as it works through the resource consent process with the Northland Regional and Kaipara District Councils.

“While we acknowledge rights to protest peacefully, we’re also committed to using existing channels to listen to and update the community on the Arapohue chicken farm proposal.

“We’ve requested additional time to respond to issues that have been raised through the consenting process.” ¢

“There is a 40 per cent drop in people training to be teachers. This strike is to highlight to the public and parents the workload expected from teachers and to campaign for remuneration to make up for the minimal pay increases.

“Class sizes are a huge issue, and there are more and more students are coming to school with learning needs.

The classroom is a reflection of what’s going on in society.”

Dargaville Police have identified those allegedly involved in the shooting of a Leopard Seal on the beach near Glinks Gully. Four males, two 16-year-olds and two 15-yearolds, will be referred to Youth Aid in relation to the incident.

Leopardseals.org, DOC and police carried out a significant investigation and thank the local community for assistance provided. “We hope

this serves as a notice that we will not tolerate this type of cruel and reckless behaviour,” a police spokesperson said.

Anyone charged under the Marine Mammals Protection Act with harassing, disturbing, injuring or killing a marine mammal faces a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment or a maximum fine of $250,000.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir/Madam Yesterday my husband and I travelled from Whangarei to see the whales on Ripiro Beach. After a longer than anticipated walk from the Baylys beach entrance, my elderly husband felt lightheaded and collapsed. The people who were gathered around to see and help the whales responded immediately and gave him wonderful caring assistance.

Project founders Emma McLean and Ms Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock have been developing the Ka Pai Programme since 2016 after recognising New Zealand landfills are growing, and recycling stockpiles have been reaching a crisis point.

“As a society, we know we have to find ways to reduce waste. However, we did not know that waste reduction is actually fun because it makes us be resourceful. Secondly, it is cost-effective and thirdly, consumers love it because they are desperate not to be part of the global waste problem”, says Ms del la Varis-Woodcock.

The Ka Pai Kaipara programme offers any type of organisation and business the opportunity to access the Love Kaipara team’s waste minimisation expertise.

The three steps of the Ka Pai programme are a site visit with a waste audit, a waste reduction plan and a follow-up visit to measure and record waste reduction. Recipients of this service receive a certificate for their progress.

Local business, Good Life Soap, participated in a pilot of this programme in November 2016, which has enabled the Love Kaipara team to refine their process.

“A waste reduction journey will always be a work in progress, but businesses often do not know where to start and are too busy to find out. The Ka Pai programme will assist them,” said Ms del la Varis-Woodcock.

Tinopai centre nears completion The Tinopai waterfront has a new skyline with the new rescue services building, currently being fitted out by an electrician, and with a concrete washdown pad due to be poured on August 18, it is well on the way towards housing local emergency services under one roof.

The Tinopai Volunteer Emergency Services centre will house the Coastguard North Kaipara rescue vessel, the rural fire tender and the first aid response vehicle, and is expected to be fully operational as the summer season unfolds.

The local population grows exponentially with a large number of holiday homes in the settlement, as well as visitors from New Zealand and further afield.

Whale stranding aftermath

After unsuccessful efforts to refloat the surviving humpback whale, of the pair found stranded on Ripiro Beach last week, the whale was euthanised under DOC supervision.

DOC has advised both whales will be buried after the adult’s body is flensed and the bones buried and marked with a GPS location for future reference.

Trapping tricky turtles

Northland is seeing record numbers of escaped or dumped turtles around waterways, and Northland Regional Council is reminding Kaipara aquatic pet owners to remain vigilant.

The Baylys Beach Community Centre Charitable Trust has encountered a further delay in the progress of its building project, with a resource consent hearing required despite more than 1,300 submissions supporting it.

Turtles are a threat to native fish and plants if left uncontrolled and Northland Regional Council biosecurity officers are trialling a homemade trap made from swimming pool noodles, PVC piping and mesh to address the issue.

“Turtles are a very tricky pest to catch given their ability to move in and out of waterways and stay underwater for long periods,” says NRC biosecurity manager, Don McKenzie.

The trust had hoped for a decision from KDC without a hearing; however, one submitter has not agreed.

It usually takes around six to eight weeks to arrange a hearing date.

“Our planners have estimated that a hearing will cost the trust $15,000, which is money that we will consequently not be able to spend on the actual project itself. Instead, it will go in fees and charges,” said trust chair, Graeme Ramsey.

“The trust would like to thank the large number of people who made a submission or signed the petition in support of the project. Kaipara students have the chance to win gardening gear, by diverting oral care products from landfill, thanks to a recycling competition run by Colgate and recycling company, TerraCycle.

Death can be a difficult subject to broach, but organisers of a discussion group inspired by the global Death Cafe movement, hope to start the conversation in the community.

Between August and November, the Colgate Community Garden Challenge invites schools nationwide to collect all brands of oral care waste and send it to TerraCycle, which gives the waste a second life by creating new products.

Two recycled community garden sets will be awarded to two schools, with each set including a garden bed,

park bench and bin, plus a $300 gardening voucher to buy seeds and plants. “Kiwi kids and young adults are the next environmental leaders, so we’re excited to see how much oral care waste they keep out of landfill,” said TerraCycle New Zealand general manager, Jean Bailliard.

Underage alcohol purchases Kiwi homes to heat up u by Jill Dickie

Police are disappointed with the actions of several premises selling alcohol to a minor in a recent Controlled Purchase Operation in the Kaipara area.

After the recent release of a new government-led Warmer Kiwi Homes insulation programme, Healthy Homes North has completed an installation in the home of local residents, Sabina and Peter.

Used in conjunction with licence compliance checks to ensure managers are operating within their legal responsibilities, the test involved a minor, under the age of 18 years, visiting premises and attempting to purchase alcohol.

Only half of those who requested identification and weren’t satisfied with the lack of proof of identity and age, declined the sale, with the other half completing the transaction.

“It is a privilege, not a right, that licensees and duty managers are granted the ability to sell alcohol, and we expect them to take their

responsibilities around the sale of alcohol extremely seriously. To sell to minors who are presenting legitimate identification showing they are under the legal purchase age is unacceptable,” says alcohol harm prevention officer, Sergeant Tai Patrick.

Police will be applying to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority for orders in relation to each sale to the minor. People with any concerns about the sale or supply of alcohol to minors or have any other questions should contact their local police station.

The couple had been living in the Kaipara area for around 12 years before buying their current home in Dargaville.

After living through a winter and both suffering ill health, they looked into home insulation options.

They were accepted for a subsidy to have ceiling and floor insulation installed under the new programme, and have enjoyed a warmer winter.

“The installers had me in tears with gratitude — they were so helpful and willing to please. They were here within a couple of days and just amazing,” said Sabina. “The insulation makes such a difference in the summer too”.

Around 52,000 homes will be made warmer nationwide over the next four years, and Kaipara residents may apply to receive assistance from this initiative.

It will be available to people with a Community Services Card, a health condition or those living in areas with the highest deprivation levels.

“The previous government’s programme, which subsidised 25 per cent of the cost, failed to meet its goal of 20,000 homes — because it was originally only available to landlords,” said Energy and Resources Minister, Dr Megan Woods.

“The first year of the new programme will focus on insulation grants, with grants for heating available from July 2019.

“This will make getting your home insulated more accessible to those who need it most.”

When your mind turns to plans about outdoor landscaping and beautifying the back yard, you know that spring is on the way.

While it’s a great season for growing, planting, refurbishing and redesigning the outdoor spaces, which frame your home, the ‘canvas’ for this masterpiece can get unruly and wild with the surge of seasonal growth.

For folks with only a small ‘pocket’ lawn, this is no problem. Furthermore, for those with massive paddocks, either an industrial-sized mower or a herd of livestock do the trick. Nonetheless, for those with something in between — an ideal seen on many of our local, coveted lifestyle blocks, the back lawn comprises twisting paths, garden beds, features and patio spaces, which must be navigated around. Too much for a push mower, but in need of something compact and nimble.

For 2018, Stiga has come up with a machine comparable to the little Suzuki Jimny, which recently wowed the auto scene — small but functional, cute but powerful. It’s called the Tornado, and that’s an apt description of its twin whirling blades as they mulch through the toughest grass. It’s not just the sheer power derived from the

The Auckland Home Show is coming, heralding the start of a busy spring for those who want to improve and beautify their living spaces. We’ve talked to the experts in the trades, and come up with a top list of tips to help make your project run smoothly.

• Plan it out with the crew. Rather than leaping into a project such as building an en suite or a sunroom with minimal planning, talk to the tradespeople you’ll need before you ever lift a hammer.

• Put some ‘slush’ in your funds.

Watchers of shows like Grand Designs will know that there is always a little gap between the budget and the finished product.

Allow for 10 per cent more than you are assuming and there will be less stress.

• Talk to the tradies early. It’s been a busy, busy season and spring will be even more so. Talk to the right folks now to be top of the list when the weather changes. Bear in mind that you need to begin NOW to be finished for Christmas if the project is a biggie.

• Nest projects, which can be done easier together. A prime example — insulate and install ventilation, extractors or a new chimney when roofing. Some jobs are easiest done at once rather than strung out.

• Decorate for you, not the next owners. Spending big money on potential resale when you could have what you want right at home?

• Get a top guarantee. If you’re undertaking major work, you need to get a guarantee that the job will last the distance. Check out groups such as the Certified Builders, or industry overwatch associations like the Plumbers and Gasfitters to check out your rights and the guarantees on offer.

• Know when not to DIY. A big one. There are many jobs which now fall under the new building laws and must be done by a real tradesperson. Mess this up, and you may void your insurance or find it hard to sell your home.

• Get it in order. Tackle jobs in the order your head dictates, not your heart. For example, new wool carpet is lovely, but don’t plan to install it just before the painters arrive.

• Get inspired by the Home Shows — but hire locals to get the job done!

• Upscale and upcycle. So much of what’s cool in interior design right now is distressed, vintage or upcycled. Take a fresh look at the furniture, doors and fittings in your home and reimagine them as something fresh. Similarly, take a look at your local demolition shops to source quirky, retro and vintage pieces to add character to your new renovation. ¢

A voice saying that ‘you’re busted’ is enough to make most thieves run. If not, it’s possible to send a quick message to the law with all the details.

It’s perhaps even more important to establish a good security system if you’re living in the countryside — farms contain many items of value, not

the least of which are tanks of diesel, tools, power tools and chainsaws, quad bikes and even livestock. Lifestyle blocks, too, share the isolation from law enforcement and neighbourhood watchfulness, which makes it easier for a potential burglar to seize an opportunity. As we approach home show season and a big spring of renovations, take a look at the security systems on offer and pick up some inexpensive, easy to install peace of mind. Northland Regional Council and Love Kaipara are backing the recent government announcement addressing the issue of singleuse plastic bags.

The Northland Regional Council is lending its voice to calls to reduce unnecessary use of plastics, including newly-released government plans for a national ban on single-use plastic bags.

On August 10, government announced plans to phase out single-use plastic bags over the next year and is calling for public submissions on the proposal until Friday, September 14.

This comes after increased pressure from consumers and organisations including Local Government New Zealand.

Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd and his deputy David Sinclair are ‘delighted’ to support these initiatives.

“The environmental impact of singleuse plastics has been well-traversed — but it’s estimated New Zealanders still use 1.6 billion single-use plastic bags each year, with each used for roughly just 10 minutes or so on average before being disposed of,” said councillor Sinclair.

“The problem is still the proliferation of other single-use plastics such as straws, cutlery, cups and takeaway containers.

“We need to cut our reliance on these disposable plastics, and this will require education, legislation and behaviour change on our society.

“Recycling of plastics across New Zealand is in crisis since China now refuses the West’s volumes of plastic waste.

“The government has a raft of challenges ahead to address this issue.

We must take stock, take heart and pull together for a brighter future and a better world.” ¢

Passed away peacefully at Kauri Coast Resthome, aged 94. Dearly loved husband of Valerie for 71 years. Much loved father and father-in-law of Lyn, Marty and Viv, Roger and Robyn. Loved Poppa of Sonia (London), Andrea (Australia) and Sally, Bevan and Tracey, Justin and Natasha. Loving great-grandfather to 14 great grandchildren.
