The proposed catch reduction in the east coast’s Snapper Fishery 1, which runs from East Cape to Cape Reinga, could mean the catch limit of nine could be reduced to as few as three. Former fisheries inspector, Doug Carter, says east coast recreational fishers could simply come into Snapper Fishery 8, which runs from Cape Reinga to Taranaki, where the daily bag limit will remain at nine. There has been an outcry over the proposed cuts from recreational fishers and the recreational marine industry including retailers, service agents and tourism operators. Only days remain for their voices to be heard. Submissions on the cuts close next week — on August 23.
