The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association wants $991,000 from the Kaipara District Council, as the association seeks also to reverse retrospective legislation that validated irregularities in the setting and assessing of rates for the scheme.

The sum sought represents $1,000 for each of the 991 MRRA members, over the council allegedly breaching their right to seek justice for their cause.

The damages claim has been filed in the Court of Appeal ahead of a hearing date on August 25.

The association is challenging the High Court ruling that councilimposed rates are legal after the retrospective Validation Act confirmed rates and there has been no breach of the Bill of Rights.

The High Court also ruled contracts for building the EcoCare facility were

made and entered into unlawfully and the contracts were unlawful, although the rates due from the 2006-07 financial year to 2011-12 in respect of the Mangawhai EcoCare wastewater treatment scheme, still had to be paid.

Association lawyer Matthew Palmer QC said the damages sought in the suit were deliberately set at a level that was ‘modest’ per person and was not ‘derisory’. 

 The Rodney College Senior School Ball this year was themed Arabian Nights. The decorations of palm trees and Aladdin’s treasure along with the menu of smoked snake balls, chocolate coated camel dung and lamb sliders with camel toe jam made for an interesting night. The students danced the night away to a range of music from ballroom to hip hop from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

The Gilmore Brown 2015 Kaipara Art Awards, held at The Kauri Museum on August 7, have been commended for exhibiting an ‘eclectic mix’ of artworks by judge Chris Carey.

The Nor thtech Applied Ar ts programme leader said the overall event demonstrated that artists were “stepping up to try new expressions with their palette.”

“It is a challenging time for the arts. There are so many distractions and forms of visual culture that it is becoming harder to pursue with the more ‘traditional’ materials so it is encouraging to see such dedication and passion.”

There were 137 entries on display with three categories covering painting and drawing, adornments such as jewellery and clothing and three dimensional art.

“It was a fantastic night and very well received. The staff had done a wonderful job of utilising the hall to it’s best opportunity and the standard of art was very high,” said Gilmore Brown Kaipara Art Awards chairman John Pickworth.

“We strive, as an organising committee, to provide a vehicle for the

exhibitors to display the very best of their work.”

Sheila Russell was awarded first place in the photography and printmaking category for her photo entitled ‘Tough Times’. The painting and drawing section was won by Becs Wood for her work ‘The Forgotten Footbridge’ and Hamish Oakley-Browne was the three dimensional winner for ‘Hand of ReasonThat Old War Horse.’

Debbie Evans won the adornments division with her creation ‘Woven-We are Stronger Together’ saying “it’s awesome to have an annual event where artists can showcase their work. It’s nice that everyone can come together collectively to share their creative sides.”

John Ecuyer won the wooden category for his piece ‘Seed’ which was applauded for its craftsmanship and juxtaposition of materials.

“The show is a wonderful symbiotic relationship between artists and a venue

Grazing farms are still selling Sales information collected by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand for grazing or finishing farms of 100 hectares or more in the Kaipara District show that the market for this class of land is much better than it was four years ago.

In the twelve months ending August 2011 there were only five sales of this type of farm recorded in Kaipara District, and they averaged only $4,211 per hectare. In the past twelve months there have been twelve of these farms sold and the average price paid per hectare was $7,261.

That is a significant lift in both value and in the number of farms sold.

In the most recent nationwide press release on July 16, available on the REINZ website — the REINZ Rural Spokesman said the following: “The rural market continues to maintain reasonable momentum as farmers grapple with the volatile mix of winter conditions and tighter cash flows; these being dependant upon the regional location and/ or specific form of land use. The current level of the New Zealand dollar and the outlook for interest rates are two of the brighter spots on the horizon for farmers.”

For smaller farms, our buyers are coming

from local areas, although some of the bigger grazing and finishing farms have attracted interest from further afield. Our statistics show that 24 per cent of buyers of all farms, including both drystock and dairy, have come from outside Northland from June 2011 to June 2014.

These buyers tell us they like Northland’s all year round grass growth, and they usually tell us they can get more land for their money in Northland than where they came from.

Contour and soil fertility are important to them, and the opportunities for fishing and other outdoor activities are often mentioned.

Northern Wairoa Rippa Rugby numbers were up this year and they have been good right through the season.

“The teams have played well and several of the coaches started a new initiative, setting up a game of tackle for the older Rippa Rugby kids on a Saturday morning. They have been teaching them to tackle properly for the future,” says chairman of Northern Wairoa youth rugby committee Graham Hutchings.

“The atmosphere has been really positive and encouraging. Some of the older players will move up to under nine rugby now and some will stay in for another year of Rippa.”

Mr Hutchings says the junior rugby teams have also played well with numbers being good, they have had a very positive season as well.

“In the under 13’s some of our local players, Ben Nilsson, Jordan Harrison and Devan Manson have been selected to play for the Northland Roller Mills squad. It is the first opportunity for our young players to make a Northland team, and it is a great accomplishment.

The tournament will be played in Whangarei this year in the September school holidays.

“I’d like to thank the coaches, parents and supporters that have helped through the season as this has made it a great success.

“We set up the structure but we need the support to help and we appreciate all those who come along.” 

Matakohe’s young authors Cross country for choppers  by Ann Morgan

Matakohe School student Ethan Mackie was so delighted to receive the parcel of books from his great grandmother, author Joy Cowley, that he took them to school to open and share with his class.

Nine year-old Joseph Tebbutt and ten-year-old Miya Pirini attend Selwyn Park School in Dargaville. Joseph uses a wheelchair permanently while Miya can only accomplish minimal physical activity until she builds up her strength whilst recovering from rheumatic fever.

“After reading the books, the whole class searched the school gathering all the ‘Joy Cowley’ books they could find and with every new discovery Ethan would beam with pride. This inspired us to have a go at writing our very own book to share with Joy,” said acting principal Helen Reynolds.

The topic for the story came about due to duck shooting season being in full swing, a popular hobby amongst many of the families. A local duck hunter went into the class to show them how to fillet a duck.

“The children totally enjoyed this opportunity to explore, ask questions

and to ponder on wonderings. We next decided on what we were going to cook using these duck fillets and this led to two delicious duck dishes ‘Belissimo creamy duck’ and ‘duck yummness stew’. The children were both surprised and delighted when their teacher transformed the classroom into a restaurant and waitresses served them their meals. With all this experience and knowledge, the ideas and creativity began to flow, resulting in this wonderful book titled ‘Yummness Stew’. Room three are super proud of their accomplishment and are sending Joy a copy for her birthday.” 

Despite their disabilities, the pair plan to participate in the upcoming school crosscountry event to raise funds for the Northland Emergency Services Trust and raise awareness of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.

“They are both going to compete and be mobilised around the course by teams of carriers and we are looking for volunteers to carry them as well as assist around the course,” said coordinator Erica Tebbutt.

Staff weight loss success

Two productions from Dargaville Little Theatre will compete at the Theatre Fest regional finals in Te Kuiti over the weekend of August 14 and 15.

Together, husband and wife team, Pahulu and Tina Aloua achieved a combined weight loss of just over 46 kilograms during the Silver Fern Farms 12 week ‘biggest loser’ competition.

Will’s Women, directed by David and Anna Cutts and Blind/Hope, written and directed by Eryn Wilson-Collins, have been selected to compete for a place in the National finals in Hamilton.

“It is a great opportunity to learn and get constructive feedback. We have made a few changes to the play in places where we were told we had missed opportunities,” says Anna.

“It was my goal to get selected to go through to the regionals.

Sixty seven staff members took part in the competition designed to raise awareness around health and well being and promote a healthy workplace. Participating staff lost a combined total of 166 kilograms.

Pahulu says he really enjoyed the challenge and having support from his wife Tina helped.

“It was good motivation. There were times where one of us would fall off and the other one would help them back on.”

He says most of his weight loss was achieved by cutting out bad foods, fizzy drinks, alcohol and decreasing portion sizes.

Tina said her strategy was to walk to work and use the onsite gym before and after her shift.

“It was really good to have the whole workplace involved, because you can’t really avoid it.”

She says the hardest part was turning down social invitations to avoid temptation but believes anyone else wanting to lose weight can do it if they put their mind to it.

“Even though the challenge is over, it’s not over for us. We will keep working on it,” she says.

The Kaiwaka School kapa haka group was invited to perform at the opening of the recent ‘meet the neighbours’ afternoon at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex.

Local carver Perry Allen saw the pictures of the event and noticed only one of the students was wearing a pendant. He was so impressed with the group that he offered to donate 20 hand carved bone pendants for the school to have for future performances.

“There was a whole lot of beautiful children and only one had a bone carving and I thought that needs to change.

“I am a big fan of paying it forward,” said Perry.

“Thirty years ago I was broke with a couple of children and I would sell my carvings on Queen Street, Auckland off a board. A total stranger came up to me and explained he was a patron of the

Epsom Girls Grammar kapa haka group and purchased $800 worth of my items for the group.

“He took me to his house and he had 3–4 copies of these amazing books worth a lot of money. He presented me with one about carving and one of the tribes of New Zealand. Those books have helped me so much.

“It blew me away, he paid it forward and now I do the same. You don’t expect anything, you just do it, and it works. I love drawing and carving, I always have.

“I am all about Kaiwaka and I love kapa haka, I grew up with it and anything I can do to encourage that I will. I am just paying it forward.” 

Berni and Brian Blair from Wellsford Rockers have been dancing rock ‘n’ roll for approximately 10 years and founded the Wellsford Rockers club with Debbie and Craig Stevenson two years ago.

Berni and Brian have recently competed in the Senior Restricted and Senior Open section of the Northland Live Rock ‘n’ Roll Club Champs and won the two sections.

“Club champs are held all over the country leading up to the National competitions, We also competed in the City of Sails Rock ‘n’ Roll Club Champs and placed second in the National novice section,” said Berni.

“Winning the trophies is a big accomplishment as you have to learn and perform a routine but you don’t know what song you will be dancing to until you are on the floor.

Starting in 2016 the Local Vocals Choir will meet weekly in the school term year and are currently exploring funding options for this transition.

The Women’s Centre in Rodney is starting a ‘Young Mums Educational Programme’ for women under the age of 25 years old who would like to meet other mums in the area, explore positive parenting behaviours, learn about self-management and life skills and strategies for raising happy and healthy children.

Family day The Wellsford Fire Service, St John Ambulance and Westpac Rescue Helicopter are having an open day for the community to meet the volunteers, ask questions and see how the fire engines and ambulances work.

“Bring your children along and we will show them around the stations and what we do, then if they ever need us they will know what happens,” said St John Ambulance station manager Paul Topliss.

“We wouldn’t have the stations without the public’s support and we have just had a makeover with money raised from the community supported by the Lions and the RSA. We appreciate all they have done to help us. This day will be a good day to come and say hi to us and it’s a great way for us to say thanks.”

It is also an opportunity to meet special guest Paul Radisich, V8 supercar driver with the super black promo racing car.

“If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the fire brigade or St John Ambulance or if you are interested in knowing what we do in the community, come along. We are also having a sausage sizzle.”

The family day is this Saturday, August 15 from 10am-3pm at 98 Rodney St, just down the road just from McDonald’s. 

“Our first day will be a come along with your family and friends and meet the staff day and discover what the programme will cover and what topics the mums may want to explore,” said centre manager Colleen Julian.

“We have funding to run this until the end of the year at this stage and Maria Collins will be the facilitator. We will apply for more funding to continue in the future if necessary. The programme has been running in Warkworth for approximately seven years with some fantastic outcomes for the young

women attending.” The group offers the opportunity to meet other mums in similar situations and of a similar age to make friends, support each other and build networks.

There will also be a children’s entertainer from 11am to 12.30pm to provide entertainment for the children and families alike.

This programme is free to attend and starts on Thursday, August 13 from 10am to 12.30pm and every Thursday thereafter at the Wellsford Plunket rooms, 90 Rodney Street. 

Whither the blame for dairy prices?

In a recent discussion with former MP Ross Meurant, I heard the view that “a bloated and overpaid bureaucracy of self promoting ‘experts’ at Fonterra HQ is a contributing factor, but it is not the cause of today’s crisis.”

“Blind faith by too many farmers in Fonterra as the salvation of dairy farming and believing the torrent of misleading use of statistical data to perpetuate the myth that Fonterra is a ‘price setter’ on the international milk market, is a contributing factor,“ Ross says.

“That the country produces a mere 2.8% of the world’s cow’s milk puts the power of Fonterra as a price setter in perspective. We need to step beyond

Ross goes on to say that “the embryo of the current problem lies with America coercing EU to sanction Russia over the dispute in Crimea . The ‘dairy crisis proper’ started when Russian counter sanctions against the EU began.

“The result has been a flood of food products including dairy across Europe and it is this over supply of dairy product which is the problem for the Kiwi dairy farmer. The economic implications will rapidly spread across rural New Zealand. Reduced farmer spending equals contractors laid off, expanding the drop in rural consumer spending.

From car sales people losing bonuses to the local coffee shop enduring reduced business throughout; economic grief in the provinces is nigh. And it’s going to get worse. It won’t go away next year.

“I have constant contact with Russia.

I see Russia turning inwards, President Putin encouraging local farmers to

greater production and extending the ‘buy local’ policy. This recharging of Russian farmers and old allies make Putin enormously popular. It also lays the foundations for increased dairy and beef production at home, and by now I trust you begin to join the dots. The problem for dairy in New Zealand is over supply of dairy product in Europe caused by counter sanctions applied by Russia in response to the initial sanctions imposed by America via its puppets.

“New Zealand need not be swamped by the economic disaster. New Zealand has not been sanctioned by Russia!

“Russia will still buy our dairy products and our beef! During a meeting I recently had with a senior minister I asked why New Zealand was not taking up the opportunity to sell dairy and beef to Russia?

“The answer, in polite translation,” said Ross, “is that New Zealand didn’t want to be the odd one out of the American club.” 

Violinist spreads her wings  by Ayla Miller

Sixteen-year-old Dargaville violinist, Elisabeth Vincent, has been accepted into Fountainview Academy, a private boarding school in British Columbia.

Elisabeth has been homeschooled in Dargaville and is looking forward to this new venture.

“The school has a strong spiritual focus and a very good music department. I wanted to go for the music and it has a vocational training programme which I think will help my career later in life,” she says.

She started learning the violin aged nine and is currently playing at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music grade five level.

As her mother is Canadian, Elisabeth already has Canadian citizenship, which made her an ideal candidate for the school.

Her grandparents, who also live in Canada, gave her a music DVD from the school when she was

ten. After that the school was always a possibility and, since her acceptance in March, now a reality.

During a family trip to Canada, Elisabeth got the chance to visit the school, and liked what she saw.

She says having family living there will help her to adjust. “I’ve been there enough for it to feel like a home away from home,” she says.

“The music standard is very high. They have an orchestra and a choir which I am looking forward to being included in.”

She will spend three years at Fountainview Academy and afterwards would like to return to New Zealand to further her education. 
