p Television comedian and ‘volunteer journalist’ Guy Williams visited Dargaville last week to bring back the town’s kūmara harvest-themed beauty pageant as a more inclusive, modern event. Along the way, the host of New Zealand Today found time to visit some other local landmarks and talk to the kind of Kiwi characters who define his brand of irreverent wit. A stop off at Big River FM saw Williams interviewed by possibly the youngest rock DJ in New Zealand, Seth Eve-Rumsey, who quizzed the comedian on his impressions of Dargaville. Guy’s tongue-in-cheek look at small-town Kiwi life, New Zealand Today, is famous for finding interesting locals and quirky stories.

Leaving for Europe in only a few weeks after the necessary visa and international paperwork arrangements have been completed, the metalworker and auto enthusiast has been motivated to act by the plight of his fellow countrymen under bombing, shelling and missile assault.

“My main motivation is that my hometown is under attack, and my family is right near the front line. Russian forces are hitting civilian objectives like residential areas, shops, pharmacies and so on with artillery and bombs,” says Anton.

He’s not alone in his mission. Worldwide, tens of thousands of Ukrainian expatriates and others who wish to counter the humanitarian toll of war are embarking on the long journey to Ukraine. continued on page 3 …
