New Zealanders from all walks of life have lost their locks for the cause, involving schools, businesses, community groups, families, sports teams, social organisations, universities and many more.

Thus, there was a ‘shave in’ at Baylys Beach restaurant, Funky Fish last weekend.

Among the first to go under the clippers was entertainer, Anna Marie Cutts and David Cutts.

“We were joined by Alicia and Jeff Hall, who have been fundraising for the cause for the last two months, and raised around $1200.

They were joined by Kathleen Bennett-Galo and Daniel Dempsey. The six were then joined on the day by two more supporters, including Daniel’s fiveyear-old step son, Keith, who gave up his rat’s tail in support of his dad.”

Police complaint against KDC A complaint against the Kaipara District Council of obtaining monies by deceit is being lodged with the police.

The complaint arises from illegal rates the council has admitted levelling in Mangawai for the EcoCare wastewater scheme.

“I gave the council until Friday, March 29, to repay the monies obtained as rates or come to some arrangement with respect to repayment,” said Mangawhai ratepayer, retired solicitor, Clive Boonham.

School milk and recycling Ruawai Primary School is one of over 100 Northland schools in the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme and it’s been well received by pupils “The milk is supplied in tetra packs, which when emptied have to be folded up, origami style and placed in a special bin, supplied by Fonterra ready for recycling,” said principal, Rob Posthumus.

“As you can probably imagine it’s fun and games for the children having to fold the containers in a specific way and it’s taking much more time out of the day than we anticipated. We have

been supplied with a fridge to keep the milk cold, which is good because I still have memories of having to drink warm milk at school.

“Some children have decided that drinking milk each day is not for them and we are not forcing them to drink it.”

Fonterra will monitor the pilot for the first three terms, with the intention of rolling it out nationwide in 2013,” says Fonterra CEO, Theo Spierings.

“Milk is without a doubt, one of the most nutritious foods there is and as leaders in dairy nutrition, we want to do what we can to make it more accessible to New Zealanders.”

Rally noise recedes The crackle and roar of rally cars has faded from rural Kaipara roads with victory in the Brother International Rally of Whangarei going to Australian, Chris Atkinson, with a 28.1 second winning margin over fellow Asia Pacific Rally Championship contender, Per-Gunnar Andersson.

Atkinson drove a Skoda Fabia S2000 in his and the car’s first event with Team MRF from India. Last year Atkinson won the event in a Proton Satria Neo S2000 car — the car now driven by Andersson.

Third overall and third APRC finisher was Atkinson’s team-mate, Indian Gaurav

Gill, in a similar MRF-backed Skoda.

The rally covered 283.28 kilometres over roads around Whangarei and through Northland and Kaipara, and attracted nearly 50 drivers from India, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Sweden, United Kingdom, and New Caledonia as well as from all over New Zealand.

Police complaint against KDC “The basis of this complaint is quite simple. Council acknowledged on February 10, 2012, that the EcoCare rates were illegal. It knew that it had no legal right to collect any rates that were illegal. However it had sent out a rate demand (fourth installment) that included those illegal rates at an earlier date.

Once it discovered that the rates were illegal Council should have sent a message to ratepayers advising that the illegal rates were not to be paid. It failed to do that and proceeded to collect and keep the illegal rates.”

The KDC says it believes the initiation of legal proceedings at this time would be counter-productive and not in the interests of either council or the community.

It adds in a statement: ‘All that it would do is create significant additional costs for both council (whose costs would ultimately need to be funded via rates) and the individual ratepayers involved.

In addition to the costs of the proceedings themselves there would be a need, if the court did order a refund of the rates collected to date, for that ‘lost revenue’ to be financed in an interim

period until the resulting loan could be repaid via a new rating mechanism in the future.

It is our desire to work with the community in an open and transparent manner.

We are working through the options for addressing the invalid rates issues and we anticipate being in a position to release the draft 2012 Long Term Plan (LTP) in the near future.

The LTP outlines a number of options for funding both the capital and operating costs associated with the MCWWS (EcoCare system).

The options put forward are significantly different to the approach that council has used in the past and will create a high level of community interest and feedback.

From the LTP process we will hopefully get to the point in which there is a level of agreement on the long term funding options for the MCWWS. In saying that, it is also accepted that these options may need to be revised in the future to reflect the outcomes of the Auditor-General Inquiry and the implementation of any recommendations arising from it.’

Two die in Kaipara air crash The crash of a micro-light aircraft on Kaipara’s South Head last weekend reverberated through the tight-knit Dargaville aviation community.

Two men in their 70s died when their newly-purchased Zenair Zodiac came down in a paddock following a Mayday emergency call.

They were returning to Dargaville after visiting the Royal New Zealand Air Force 75th Anniversary Air Show at Ohakea.

“In fact, both men stayed with me before they flew south,” said Dargaville instructor, Murray Foster.

“One of the men is a qualified pilot and a former ship’s captain — including time as skipper of the Spirit of New Zealand, while the other was being taught by me, and was just about to qualify.

They bought their new plane about six weeks ago and we had hangar facilities for them so they kept it at Dargaville.

“It’s a real tragedy all around. Both men had grown families and in fact,

they had each just built new homes.”

Mr Foster said he expected a contingent would travel from Dargaville for the funerals in Auckland.

The names of the men involved had not been released for publication at the time of printing.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Imagine this. ‘Sometimes during the sand storms some unfortunate fowl gets blown out from the shelter of the house and as they crouch down the sand covers them and if they are not rescued, it buries them’ No, it is not a story from a Middle East desert but a 1901 newspaper report describing conditions at Pouto Lighthouse on Kaipara Heads.

‘Kaipara North Head is a moving sandhill with a few hard clay patches. The lighthouse and the houses are built on one of them,’ noted the newspaperman in his story.

‘The houses are built on piles off the ground so that the wind gets full scope under them to keep the sand

clear. Otherwise the sand would bank up against them in windy weather. It is very unpleasant when blowing hard as great sandbanks build up in unexpected places. The air is full of driving sand which finds its way in through doors and windows, much to the disgust of tidy housewives’.

Kaipara was never an easy harbour for a ship’s captain to safely enter. Early instructions for mariners told them to sight a triangular tuft on the South Head

Putting the Kai in Kaipara Kaipara Kai’s Celebrity Dinner filled the tables at the Lighthouse Function Centre last Saturday night, with entertainer Garry McCormick adding to the fun.

Earlier in the day, he held a meet and greet with local people at the Empire Wine Cellars where he signed T-shirts as local country music singer, Brooke Menzies, provided entertainment.

At the dinner, Kevin Friedrich and Lionel Richie offered a piano accordian accompaniment as guests enjoyed Kim’s Cuisine to comments such as ‘Fabulous - equal to anything a master chef could have done’.

Seafood fritters vied with scotch fillet, roast lamb, spiced kumara and macadamia crusted snapper for the diners’ attention.

“Overall the whole Kaipara Kai festival went really well,” said organiser Trevor Donald. “We had lots of positive feedback and demands for it to happen again.

Classics in the Kaipara Veteran visitors graced Kaipara roads when millions of dollars worth of classic cars drove down SH12 to Dargaville and points east Two dozen vehicles, mostly priceless Packards – well one did have a price tag of $2,000,000 – were taking part in the South Pacific Packard Club’s Northern Exposure rally through Northland.

The journey started and finished in Orewa, and the Kaipara leg, from the Waipoua Forest to The Kauri Museum was the end of the trip.

“It was a wonderful experience when they drove up and they all thoroughly

enjoyed their visit here,” said museum CEO, Bet Nelley.

The cars included an Australian contingent as well as vehicles from around New Zealand.

While the club has more than 50 members, not all made the Northland tour. With some of the five-litre power plants guzzling as much as four litres of gas per 16 kilometres, it is ‘not for the faint-hearted,’ as one driver quipped.

argaville claims the distinction of possessing the youngest skater in the world in the person of Dorothy Armitage, who is only two years and nine months old. Though there are no baby skates available, this little mite with the smallest skates strapped to her feet is able to make really excellent progress around the floor of the Royal Rink. She readily joins in with the throng of regular skaters if permitted to do so.

Top honours for local real estate stars It was a night to remember at the annual First National Real Estate awards for the team at our local Dargaville and Maungaturoto branches, as they filled the trophy cabinet with accolades.

Held each year by the Australasian-wide group of real estate professionals, the awards honour achievement in all areas of the trade, singling out those agents who have gone the extra mile for their clients and those who have excelled in different facets.

Jill Wilson from Roper and Jones (our local First National branch in Dargaville) is overjoyed with the range and number of awards her tight-knit team have won, with recognition in a wide range of categories and in the face of stiff competition from Auckland salespeople enjoying a resurgent property market.

“It’s recognition for all their hard work,” she says — hard work which has seen Roper and Jones declared Rural Office of the Year as well as gaining the third spot overall for sales.

Other accolades for individual salespeople include a pair for Rhoda Morrison, who attained both top rural salesperson and a Sapphire award (equivalent to a silver medal in sports).

For her five years with First National Rachael was also given a long service award, while Gary Morris from the Maugaturoto branch was commended for his fifteen years of service.

That’s because before the first duck calls are heard across the ponds and wetlands of the north there’s another big pre-season event which draws in hunters from far and near — the annual Northern Wairoa Gun Club Duck Hunters’ Shoot in association with Nola Sports.

In what’s become a yearly tradition folks will get together with their fellow shooters to meet, greet and compete in a day which is both fun and practical.

As well as enjoying a clay target shoot in the crisp autumn air it’s a chance to unbend rusty trigger fingers and make fine adjustments to equipment which will soon be pressed into service bagging dinner on the wing.

To make the day even more fun there’s a swag of prizes up for offer — not only a pool of $3000 but also a pair of Escort pump action shotguns. With prizes like these up for grabs expect to see some sharp shooting action! Last year over 100 hunters and marksmen had a great time at the event, and this year is shaping up to be another one for the record books.

Winter Health Art of the Shaolin Monks sharpens the body and the mind Though they appear worlds apart in their applications here in New Zealand, the twin disciplines of Tai Chi Chuan and Shaolin Kempo share a spiritual and historical bond going all the way back to the Buddhist monks of the Himalayas, and a philosophy of inner peace, confidence and strength which is timeless.

Initially developed to keep the bodies of meditative monks fit and healthy, Shaolin Kempo has become famous throughout the world due to the skill and artistry of the Shaolin Monks — a group who are legendary for their skill and iron willpower.

Tai Chi, on the other hand, is usually associated with peace and relaxation —

a technique which came out of China roughly 350 years ago to the attention of the west, but which flourished in the 60s and 70s as a de-stressing, meditative art.

In fact, as local martial arts trainer and advocate Nick Christiansen will tell you, both forms share a common purpose — to harness the flow of energy naturally occurring in the body, to foster discipline and calm, and to focus the mind. Tai Chi motions performed with powerful, swift intent are nearly indistinguishable from similar Kempo forms to the untrained eye, and each art complements the other.

However, this is a limited resource for tyre recycling, so much so that the government has come up with $133,000 in funding for the Product Stewardship Foundation to explore recycling options for used tyres.

“We have a significant environmental problem in New Zealand with the disposal of about 4 million tyres annually at the end of their useful life,” a government spokesman said.

The working group will look at schemes in other countries and develop options and guiding principles for New Zealand.

The government expects to receive the report detailing options by April next year.

The Motor Trade Association is a lead member of the investigating group and manager, Dougal Morrison, says it is good to see common sense prevail.

“There are only so many silage stacks in New Zealand. Most tyres, even if collected by reputable collectors end up in landfills around the country.”

MTA would like to see around 4 million tyres collected each year and processed into other products.

From Wakefield to Masefield  by Brian Eastwood

It is perhaps not generally realised that the concertina and piano accordion have been in the back ground as part of New Zealand culture right from the ‘get-go’ “Kaihaia diverted us by bringing a long pointed wooden spear within an inch of our bodies then retreating with roars of laughter every time he saw us shrink from the thrust. I repaid him the first day he came aboard the ship. I had an accordion under a large cloak and kept time with its notes with my mouth to deceive him and twenty other natives that I was uttering the musical sounds. I let them find out the trick a day or two after.”

Edward Jerningham Wakefield recorded that happening in his book ‘Adventure in New Zealand’. It was September 24th 1839 aboard the ship Tory and was the first mention of an accordion arriving in New Zealand.

Now Dargaville’s world-renowned piano accordionist Kevin Friedrich, together with Dargaville Museum, has set up an exhibition that takes you on a journey through some highlights of New Zealand history and the part that accordion music has played.

Photos, information boards, instruments, dressed models, original sheet music covers and memorabilia from the Wakefield incident right up to New Zealander Grayson Masefield winning the World Accordion Championships in 2009, are on show.

Accordions and especially concertinas were easily stowed music makers in the kit for sailors, soldiers, new settlers, bushmen and gum diggers, all a long way from home.

Soldiers pictured on their troopship in 1943 and two years later in Italy relaxing while they listen to accordion music tells its own tale.

Maori soon took a liking to the music they could make on these instruments that they had never seen before. The Museum display shows photos of Maori accordion bands including Hokianga in 1920 and Whangarei in 1936.

Dargaville has been the home of many successful accordionists and bands The Museum presentation records that Kevin Friedrich was the New Zealand champion in 1979 and 1980 and for eight years was president of the Confederation of Internationale de Accordionists.

Interesting trivia notes that Air New Zealand has its own band and Dame Malvina Major, Precious McKenzie and policeman, M.P and former Dargaville man Ross Meurant, all play the accordion.

And interest is still high in this district. Witness the 200 people that attended Kevin Friedrich’s concert two weeks ago at the Lighthouse.

SPORT NEW ZEALAND (FORMERLY SPARC) – RURAL TRAVEL FUND 2011/2012 Applications for financial assistance from the Sport New Zealand Rural Travel Fund are now being called for.

A total of approximately $20,000 is available for distribution.

The Rural Travel Fund is designed to help subsidise travel for junior teams (5 to 19 year olds) participating in their local competition.

Applicants should be resident in the Kaipara District Council area This is an ideal opportunity for winter sports codes to get a share of this funding.
