p On a chilly April morning, more than 100 years since dawn broke over Anzac Cove at Gallipoli, New Zealanders from city suburbs and country towns made their annual pilgrimage to places of remembrance. They gathered at Dargaville’s war memorial, to remember those who died on Turkish shores and also our servicemen and women who sacrificed in conflicts across the world, despite that ‘war to end all wars — 1914 to 1918.’ They came from service sectors, from community groups, from old soldiers to housewives, with students and young people to the fore. The latter laid poppies and wreaths to honour grandparents and family relatives they had never met, just with a simple desire to remember and honour the fallen, and those who have served.
