“We were pleased to be hosting TV3, with the crew sending video that was going live into the Maori Television broadcast as well as segments into the TV3 morning programme,” said Maungaturoto Returned Services Association president, Terry McCook.

“We also had a record turnout for the parade with 350 people, and many of these were young people and children, which indicates the huge interest the day is creating.”

His sentiments were echoed by Paparoa RSA president,

Ralph Williams, who attended the Maungaturoto observance before returning to officiate at The Kauri Museum at Matakohe, which held a combined service with Paparoa at 10.30am.

“We had a really good turnout from locals and visitors and the crowd once again included many youngsters, with Matakohe Primary pupils leading the National Anthem in the service that followed a march to the grave of war hero and late prime minister, Gordon Coates.  Cyclists on the Tour of New Zealand spent the night in Dargaville recently including race director Peter Yarrell and the female race leader Yvette Hills-Willis. Peter and his team stayed at the ‘lovely and historic’ Commercial Hotel and owner Pam Kelly says, “We were very busy. We didn’t have a spare bed.” More than 230 riders are travelling the length of the country in eight days, beginning simultaneously in Bluff and at Cape Reinga, and meeting in Wellington for a show down.

 The creek crossings were a hit on the Monster Trail Bike Ride at Tangowahine where the water flowed with a little help from the weather. They were a highlight on the 75km track which crossed private farm land. Funds raised will go to Tangowahine Primary School.

 A fun run/walk at Mangawhai saw 580 entrants, many of them school children, taking advantage of great weather and, for the youngsters, a 5.5 km course. Even infants took part, with locals Monica and Michael Becker crossing the finish line with children on board.

The event was the second in the 2013 Sport Northland Run/Walk Series, with the next event scheduled in Paihia on Mother’s Day, May 12.

Citing financial uncertainties, the Kaipara District Council has delayed consideration of the Mangawhai Activity Zone Charitable Trust’s application for a grant from reserve contribution funds.

The trust is seeking $131,704 to fund the completion of the second stage of the skate plaza and the construction of a pathway for the children’s playground in the Mangawhai Park development.

“When we heard, it was so cool,” says director Dylan Hansen, “the website creator sent us the link and said, ‘you guys are famous.’”

What began in their media class in 2010 has now grown to include peers interested in other disciplines, such as music, but that suits film which requires collaboration and a range of skills.

The group uses social media as a vehicle to share films and is building an audience through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Last year the young film-makers won the Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust short film competition and plan to enter again this year.

They will also enter a national 48 hour film competition where teams are challenged to write, shoot and edit a film in only two days.

Free civil defence workshop A community workshop to help businesses survive and recover after an emergency will be offered in Dargaville.

Scenarios that may affect Kaipara businesses include isolated events such as a fire, ongoing disruptions including a power cut or road closures and major natural disasters like a storm or an earthquake.

“While many businesses, especially our smaller ones are familiar, and relatively comfortable, with coping with adverse events like flooding and bad weather, they still need to know more about how they can respond and recover from a wide range of incidents from fires to power cuts,” says Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group officer, Kim Abbott.

She notes that over two years on from the Christchurch earthquake, Cantabrians are still facing a prolonged recovery.

“Basically, these workshops are designed to enable business owners and operators to undertake the business continuity planning process with the aid of qualified business and emergency mentors.”

The Dargaville workshop, with room for 24 participants, will be held on May 9, from 9.30am-12.30pm.

Two days at sea out at the Graveyard and elsewhere on the Kaipara harbour paid dividends for keen fishers, Garry Greaves and Andrew Kenny in the Point Curtis Cruising Club annual East versus West Coast fishing competition.

The Kaiwaka based club runs an active programme of hunting and fishing activities, and will be out on the opening day of the duckshooting season.

‘Gravy’ Greaves landed the heaviest snapper and kahawai while Mr Kenny picked up third places for kahawai and gurnard.

Stories were told at the after-match prizegiving function of encounters on the Kaipara recently with large sharks.

Hospice Kaipara are getting ready to slip into their best frocks and dancing shoes as the palliative care specialist service marks 21 years in the community.

“It’s not a fundraiser, it’s an Event,” says organiser Gina Thompson. “This year marks 21 years from our first big milestone — opening the Kowhai Room at Dargaville Hospital — and we’re throwing a proper dance to celebrate.”

Promising an “exhilarating, fun night out”, Gina says the Basin City Big Band are booked to play all the hits fit to boogie to — from the 1920s right through to the 80s — and setting the mood, members of Whangarei dance academy Instep Dance will demonstrate dancing styles throughout the evening.

On with the show at ORT It takes more than a chainsaw to make a dent in the enthusiasm of Otamatea Repertory Theatre.

While this senseless act of vandalism is upsetting and disturbing, it is a matter of ‘take it on the chin’ and ‘go on with the show!’

After the great success of last year’s One Act Play Festival, the ORT committee decided to make the festival an annual event. Theatre-goers are in for a treat with three plays to be performed each evening.

Two plays are locally-written by David Sims and Cal Lovell, and the other play is by celebrated British author Joe Graham.

Another play had entered but unfortunately recently withdrew.

The One Act Play Festival starts on

May 10th, with a Gala Awards night on May 11th which will be adjudicated by Lindsay Nash of Theatre New Zealand.

The plays will be judged for eligibility to compete at the TNZ Regional Final. Last year, ‘Coupon Fiesta’ written and directed

by Maura Flower competed at the Regional Final in Whakatane and won Best Technical Production, Best Actor Male and Best Actor Female.

Tickets are available online at www. ort.org.nz or at Tony’s Lotto Shop in Maungaturoto. The plays are unsuitable for young children as the language in some of the plays may be considered offensive.

Craft and a cuppa  by Sheri O’Neill

“Company, craft and a bit of a natter” make Wednesday morning a high spot for members of Dargaville’s Wednesday Craft Group.

Spokesperson for the group, Lilian Radich, says a roster of instructors covers a variety of crafts — “everything from knitting to jewellery” with a different activity offered each week — and new members are always welcome.

“You don’t need to be a crafty person; we have everyone from experts to novices. And you don’t have to participate in the day’s craft — some of our members just come along for the company.”

Along with tuition, members are also

provided with morning tea and a light lunch, all for a small $4 donation.

“We’re currently raising money to buy craft materials,” Lilian says, “so we’re running a raffle of cosmetics, groceries and little luxuries contributed by members.”

The craft group meets Wednesdays from 10am–12pm at the CMA Building in Tirarau Street, and will be selling raffle tickets outside Dargaville Countdown this Thursday, May 2.

A spot of rugby was the order of the day when the Otamatea Rugby Club recently marked a quarter century of play.

In Dargaville, the Dawn Parade attracted a good number of ex servicemen while a civil ceremony followed at the Town Hall. It was

marked by a salute to Australia in the Anzac — Australia, New Zealand Army Corps — partnership.

“I thought it was time we acknowledged the huge contribution of Australia, as they also include New Zealand in their services,” said Dargaville RSA president, John McLean.

The acknowledgement was underlined by a verse of Advance Australia Fair, sung by the Kauri Chorus.

Elsewhere across Kaipara, services and parades took place in Mangawhai, Ruawai, Te Kopuru and many towns and settlements. ■

“It was my first experience making a wedding cake from beginning to end and my son had more faith that I could do it than myself at times.”

She put in over 40 hours and went twice to the Northern Wairoa cake decorating classes making around 30 flowers out of icing before she perfected it.

“Without the patience of the tutor, Lyn Miers, who showed me how to make the gerberas, I wouldn’t have been able to complete it.”

The happy couple were blown away with the end result says Debbie and the ivory and aubergine gerberas matched the bridal party’s bouquets.

She says that the biggest challenge was transporting the tiers, a mix of white chocolate mud cake and fruit cake, down

to Christchurch where the wedding was held.

“It weighed eight kilograms and you are only allowed seven in your hand luggage,” says Debbie, “luckily the security guard let us off.”

She carried the delicate gerberas in a shoebox well protected with tissue paper and cellophane but three petals fell off and had to be salvaged with a hot glue gun.

“I would do it all again for my kids but only if they got married in the Kaipara — I’m not travelling with a wedding cake again,” laughs Debbie.

As far as cake decorating goes, she’s “hooked” and has signed up for a year of classes.

Heather Hobson from Aranga says the death of her child several years ago taught her the importance of following dreams.

One of Heather’s dreams had always been to breed the perfect pony. “The pony mothers feel happy about letting their children ride,” she says.

When her twelve year old son Travis

passed away, she says she realised dreams should be pursued. “Life is short; you have to make the most of it, and building the pony stud became part of our healing process.”

Stallion Monteith Ridge Bow has sired over 40 foals and has 20 more due this spring.

“My stud motto is ‘affordable and available’ and my goal is to make these beautiful horses within the reach of all who would like to own one,” she says.

Another dream for Heather and her family was to open their home to foster children. “We began the training, but when Travis became ill it was put on hold while we cared for him.”

Heather has been a foster mother now to several children, and is currently caring for a five week old baby girl. “I just love kids. A child is just such a beautiful thing,” she says.

Duck Shooting Season Smoked Duck and Kumara Salad with Wasabi Mayo A delicious BBQ side to make good use of ducks you’ve put in the smoker during hunting season.

3 cups of smoked duck, skinless breast meat, cubed (approx. two birds) ½ cup of cashew nuts 4–5 medium kumara, peeled A small pottle of sour cream One jar or 1¼ cups light mayonnaise One finely diced red onion One coarsely diced capsicum — any colour will do, but sweet yellow capsicum is best One sprig of chopped spring onions Wasabi (Japanese horseradish) only one small squeeze is needed!

Add the kumara, making sure that you don’t inadvertently ‘mash ‘it with overzealous mixing.

Process the light mayo and sour cream in a pulse blender or kitchen whiz to make a creamy sauce.

While still in the blender, add a little wasabi and pulse for a further 10– 20 seconds. Give it a taste — that wasabi is pretty zesty, so caution is the watchword here. Keep adding a bit at a time until its fiery enough for your palate.

Mix the dressing into the ingredients in the bowl, and enjoy!

Boil the kumara well in advance and cube it to the same size as the duck. Give it time to completely cool in a separate bowl.

The smoked duck is perfect as it is — there is no need to cook correctly smoked fowl, either chicken or duck. Do make sure your duck isn’t ‘cold smoked’ before you prepare this dish, though!

Hunters will be out in force this week as duck shooting season begins, promising fun and challenges as well as the promise of some succulent roasts. There are a number of big events hosted around the Kaipara to coincide with the start of 2013’s duck shoot, and participants are encouraged to get amongst the action, as prizes, hints, tricks, tips and a lot of fun await.

First up is the annual Hunting and Fishing Dargaville duck night — a local tradition made all the more fun this year by over 3,000 dollars worth of prizes and a shot at the title of the world’s best duck caller. This event kicks off on the evening of Wednesday the first, and is hosted by Hunting and Fishing in the main street.

Shooting begins with the dawn on Saturday the 4th, and hunters are reminded once again to check their targets, observe strict gun safety, and of course to make sure they have a valid license.

After a great weekend of shooting, the historic Maungaturoto Hotel has the perfect way to relax. Dry off your socks by the fire and enjoy their big duck shooter’s day — a celebration with prizes, wacky games, and a huge free BBQ for all of the Kaipara’s hunters.

There’ll be a warm welcome and cold drinks on offer as you share some yarns about the ones that flew away, and of course you’ll be entertained long into the night while planning next weekend’s expedition. Mitsubishi’s new Mirage has been an instant hit in New Zealand, and that’s not all down to the retro chic appeal of its badge.

Because while a large number of us remember owning or driving in the old Mirage (a bit of a 1980s’ classic, in its own way), the latest reincarnation of Mitsubishi’s flagship small car ticks all the boxes, paring away the fat to leave a simple, functional, and surprisingly fun little vehicle for a price well within the reach of those who would usually only buy second hand.

Take the interior, for example. Here you’ll find ample room despite the car’s diminutive footprint, and auto essentials like air conditioning, a stereo with simple to master controls, and even hands free connectivity for your mobile. But you’ll find no hint of excess — the Mirage looks tidy and slick, with glossy black and silver accents, but it’s not a mobile appliance store. The controls are so simple and well laid out that it becomes instantly comfortable to reach for the indicator or the gear shift, and visibility all round is great, meaning that backing up and parking are a breeze.

On the road a tap of the accelerator doesn’t elicit a V8 growl, but rather a burbling purr and smooth acceleration.

The best part, though — the Mirage’s biggest appeal — is its looks. Letter to the editor Looking forward

Dear Editor, We are appalled at the way in which a section of Mangawhai ratepayers (or non-ratepayers) are holding the remainder of us to ransom by lodging proceedings over the Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme.

Who will be winners in this harebrained action? We cannot see any long term benefit to people connected to the scheme, and we cannot see any advantages to the ratepayers elsewhere.

The only possible outcome from this will be to increase costs in an already difficult situation, and it is unlikely that anyone except lawyers will gain any benefit from such a process.

We agree with the comment by Steve Ruru that this is simply a ‘doublewhammy’ for all ratepayers. Hopefully the MRRA has the funds to pay for the costs incurred by the Kaipara District Council if they (the MRRA) should lose the argument.

It would be beneficial for the whole community if the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association would withdraw their request and allow us to finally proceed forwards instead of backwards.
