p Around 25 people of all ages, including supporters from Te Ha Oranga, took on the eight-kilometre fun run or walk at Kai Iwi Lakes recently, with one participant using the event as a training run and setting a target for others of 32 minutes. The event was a fundraiser for the Dargaville Scouts group who have five members attending the scout jamboree at Mystery Creek in December. A raffle is operating as another way of raising funds for the trip and tickets can be purchased by emailing Belinda Gunner, bindy@bindy.kiwi.nz. As more funds will be required, future events will be held such as a disco, sausage sizzle and quiz night.

p The Out and About trampers from Whangarei recently paid Dargaville a visit to revisit known spots and discover new experiences. The group of 20 enjoyed the history of the newly opened Amber Threads walking trail and reported the signage to be educational and easy to read. They spent time at the Dargaville Museum before indulging in a healthy lunch at Taste and See. Other comments from the walkers included, “very impressed with the museum,” and “a relaxed little town.”

p Nine powerlifters took part in a New Zealand qualifying round of competition at Brian’s Gym recently. The lifters met criteria for the North Island Championships to be held in Auckland in May as well as the national championships being held in Christchurch in August. If they do well there, they will represent New Zealand at the world championships in Canada in October. Representing the Kaipara district was Dargaville’s Jordan Bennett, who won the 85kg Class Open Men with his squat 135kg, bench press 120kg, deadlift 185kg, a total of 440kg.

Paracyclist wins gold again

The investigation into a helicopter crash that killed pilot Allan Jessop, 42, from Tangiteroria, and forestry worker Derek Hammond, 49, in the Glenbervie Forest, north of Whangarei on October 31, 2016 has found the cause is unknown because of extensive damage.

Former Dargaville resident, para-cyclist Emma Foy, has returned from the recent UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships with a fourth gold medal for the women’s B three-kilometre individual pursuit race.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission said the damage to the Robinson R44 helicopter, subsequent fire and the lack of any other incontrovertible evidence, meant that the cause of the accident could not be determined.

Its report said it appeared the helicopter had struck the ground at a “high rate of descent and a low forward speed” while the men were surveying an area of the forest ahead of spraying.

An intense fire followed, destroying the cabin and fuselage. ¢

Water restrictions in place Kaipara District Council has advised it is moving to level four of its Drought Management Plan for Dargaville and Baylys Beach. It means full water restrictions are now in place and water is to be used only for essential use, That includes such things as cooking and drinking, showering and washing clothes. Foy, who has a visual impairment, was paired with fellow Rio 2016 Paralympian Hannah van Kampen who acted as the sighted pilot. The team finished ahead of Belgium who won the silver medal and Great Britain the bronze.

They also won the world champion title for the fastest time recorded in the women’s B three-kilometre individual pursuit and brought home a bronze medal for the women’s B one-kilometre time trial.

Foy’s other three wins were when she was teamed with sighted pilot Laura Thompson in 2014, 2015 and 2016 at the Rio Olympics. After Thompson retired, Foy opted to take time off and focus on a new challenge.

In 2017 she received a Prime Minister’s Athlete scholarship, which

aims to retain talented athletes in their sports and also helps transition athletes into a career. She began studying for a career in law at Waikato University.

“Having a break was a really good choice for me and has allowed me to refocus and come back stronger in many ways.”

Now she is riding with a new pilot she said they are both learning to adapt to each other, in how they ride and how they conduct themselves, but happy with the progress they have made in a short time. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are the big goal now, and the cyclists balance their time training with study papers.

“Even when we are away competing and training we have a bit of downtime, so it is good to have something to keep the mind occupied,” said Foy. ¢

Delivering warmer winters This April the gigantic stock of firewood behind the fences of Greenways Trust has reached Everest-sized proportions.

Students at Matakohe School are excited at the prospect of a new bike track after months of planning and are happy to share it with the whole community, but funds are still needed for completion.

A dedicated team have been hard at work as the weather changes to autumn, tackling the task of cutting it all down to size, to help warm the homes of our residents and they have a new tool in their arsenal.

The Whopper Chopper is the creation of Mahoe machinery, a Kiwi firm who have helped immensely in bringing this new piece of infrastructure to the Greenways crew. With their expertise and some focussed training, all hands are on deck to operate the giant yellow wood splitter, which, according to its enthusiastic new operators, has ‘never met a log it could not handle’.

A kind donation from Pub Charity has helped upgrade the wood yard from small log splitters to this powerful machine, upping production from 14 to 40 cubes of wood a day. That means

a powerful boost in output, and more firewood available for locals, who in previous years may have missed their opportunity to buy from Greenways as the winter carried on. Now the process is streamlined — from contractors Daniel and Lesley who source ‘donor’ trees, picking up unwanted logs of gum, macrocarpa and other hot-burning woods from around the region — through to the powerful ‘chopper’ and on to bags of dry and ready fire fuel.

The by-product of the machine is a collection of fire-lighting scraps which are also for sale. In fact, there’s so much wood that commercial relationships are being built as well.

Greenways continue to do good in the community with this significant investment set to pay dividends this winter and for years to come. ¢

p Matakohe School students are excited to have a new bike track opening on April 5

As the school is a community facility, the 350-metre long track will be available for the public to enjoy it outside school hours, once it is finished around the end of March.

A small number of trees have been cut down for access, and a digger created the trail, leaving jumps and hills of varying difficulty to be negotiated by the future cyclists. The next step is to have tractors spread limestone and roll the track to create an easy-care surface.

“Riding on the bike track will not only be fun but will teach us gross motor skills and help us get fitter and

healthier. We are really looking forward to the opening and know that there will be a lot of fun and challenges,” said the eager students.

To assist with the track development, the school is fundraising with an upcoming event at the Paparoa Golf Club on April 7. BMX bikes for the children to use, helmets and a storage shed are also required, and any assistance from the Kaipara community would be appreciated.

A project by Mangawhai Artists Inc to raise funds for a community-based art workspace rapidly gained momentum throughout March. The PledgeMe campaign had a target of $100,000, and upon closing on March 31, it had successfully raised $110,410.

Mangawhai Artists have worked to achieve their goal, gaining support from the local, nationwide and international community. Pledges have come from as far afield as the United Kingdom.

“People left super messages after they’d pledged. One of my favourites is the family who pledged a concrete block for their daughter’s first birthday — so her name will be on the wall and be a permanent part of this community.” said project coordinator, Lynn Middleton.

Others pledging included Ric and Suzanne Kayne, who said “We are all about empowering people. A communitybuilt and owned art workspace will make

for great life experiences and bring out the best in people. We are very happy to contribute to make this happen for Mangawhai.”

PledgeMe is a New Zealand company and has hosted many crowdfunding campaigns, and their feedback for this project is very positive. “The campaign is working hard to spread the word, and it’s great to see how much support they’re getting.

“They’re making steady progress towards their target, which is especially impressive for a local project in a small community,” said spokesperson, Jess Ducey. ¢

“All of the host clubs have done an amazing job. The clubs are blessed with a great group of committee members and helpers who do this, all as volunteers, and the Northland Champs series has been going from strength to strength since its inception,” said Rodney MX Club secretary, Ian Standring.

“Matt Gunson of the Whangarei Motorcycle Club has done an amazing job getting this series up and running, attracting sponsors with Penrite Oil becoming the naming sponsor for 2019.

“Riders were greeted by different track conditions at each round with sandy conditions at Dargaville, the mud at Maungaturoto and the Whangarei event had to be moved after the sudden death of the venue owner, Mark Sands. The third round was moved to Maungaturoto where the riders were

greeted with a freshly prepped track, and the racing line was very fast.”

The final round was held last weekend at Ahuroa where a wide and fast-flowing track of 1.8km was marked out.

“The Ahuroa school were on-site to keep everyone fed and watered on the day, luckily we only had some short showers, which kept dust at bay until late afternoon,” Ian said.

“Racing was very exciting with some local, national pro riders making an appearance including Hamish Dobbyn KTM 450 and Blake Gillard KTM 250 who only entered the final round and put on a great display of fast riding.

Also opted not to score points as to keep the racing close between the riders who had competed in all of the rounds.”

Encapsulated pellet with green pre-feed paste in biodegradable bait bags containing the pesticide Potassium Cyanide will be deployed in Baitsafe bait station installed at 100m x 100m spacing throughout the forested area of the park (excluding buffer zones).

Diphacinone comes in form of a hard paste, is dyed green and will be applied to Philproof bait stations installed at 50m x 100m spacing.

The pesticides are poisonous to humans and domestic animals.

Roading Report Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during April include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified, cleaning and painting of roading assets, bridges, sight rails and signs and systematic grading of the network (weather permitting). Maintenance grading relies on specific moisture content, and due to water shortages we are currently not able to complete grading in some parts of the district.

• Line Marking – Dargaville township and surrounding areas • Footpath Renewals –Marshall, Bickerstaffe, View, Wintle, Molesworth, Mangawhai Heads, Angus and Cranley.

• Sealed Pavement Maintenance (Roads) - Crack Sealing – Oneriri and Whakapirau.

• Culvert Replacements / Repairs – Ford , James, Bickerstaffe, Batley, Oruawharo, Arapaoa, Neems, Aranga Coast and Aranga Station.

The Northland tsunami siren network will be tested on the morning of Sunday, April 7, from 10am, coinciding with the end of daylight saving. The sirens will sound twice and be monitored for any faults.

“Top prize on the list is $1,000 in cash for the lucky ticket holder, so you can be in to win even without going fishing,” said Pahi Boating and Fishing Club commodore, Mike Donald.

“We have upped the prize cupboard this year, and we are pleased to support the Riverview Rest Home extensions as a result. Apart from the lucky ticket, we have substantial prizes for various fish species.”

The fishing contest starts at one minute past midnight on Saturday morning and closes at 4pm. “That means 4pm, so if you are still walking

up the wharf at that time, you won’t make it to the weigh-in,” Mike said. The club will have a bar licence for the event, as well as food and entertainment with Kaipara’s one-man band, entertainer Sam Taylor, on the club’s deck overlooking the harbour.

“It’s all about family fun with kids at $15 and adult tickets at $30,” said Mr Donald.

“We will also be having a fish auction after the prizegiving, but we will be keeping a good quantity of fillets, which as we do each year, we make sure the old folks’ homes get a feed.” ¢

The twice-yearly testing is done in September and April, at the same time as the start and finish of daylight saving, serving as a reminder for everyone to move their clocks forward or back.

Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group advise that in spite of the alarm system people should be aware of the risk of a local tsunami, which could arrive ahead of an official warning.

“Everyone who spends time on the coast needs to know the natural warning signs of a tsunami. A strong

earthquake that is hard to stand up in or one that lasts longer than a minute, or out of the ordinary sea behaviour, such as sudden rise or fall or unusual noise,” said spokesperson Victoria Harwood.

Harwood said Northland has more tsunami sirens than any other region of New Zealand and the 200th outdoor siren is one of 12 being installed ahead of the April testing. There are currently 17 sirens in Mangawhai and four in Ruawai. Information on evacuation zones is available at nrc. govt.nz/evacuationzones.

Kaipara Marchers team member, Carrie Adlington, is promoting the sport and raising money for the team to attend the 2020 leisure marching national display day in Christchurch.

When the government spends $119 million of our money, they and we surely should expect to get value for money and something that serves some practical purpose — even more so when a lot of that $119 million is spent on experts who have no other purpose than to deliver what we want.

The funds raised will help to pay for elements of the uniform, travel and accommodation so that the whole team can attend.

Carrie said without the current fundraising it wouldn’t have been possible for them to attend these nationals and has personally benefited from previous efforts, adding, “so now it’s my turn to give back.”

“It’s important for the Kaipara Marchers to go to the 2020 leisure marching nationals in Christchurch, so they can keep representing this beautiful corner of New Zealand and so that they can keep being a shining

example of community and team spirit.” The fundraiser involves a $10 shoulder sound massage with Tibetan singing bowls. The sound therapy relaxes and calms the body and mind in a short 10-minute session, and all are welcome.

The massages will be held at four venues on alternating Saturday mornings of April, at Paparoa Farmer’s Market and Mangawhai Village Hall Market, beginning in Paparoa on April 6.

Well, not so apparently, according to statistics minister, James Shaw.

Shaw says he retains confidence in Statistics New Zealand and government statistician Liz MacPherson. That is at a time, one year down the track, and by just about every count (or lack of), the 2018 Census for which they are responsible seems to be an unmitigated disaster.

A census is hugely important. As the official count of how many people are in New Zealand and where, the data collected is used as the basis for important decisions, such as where government spends taxpayers’ money on services like schools and hospitals and how the government makes provision for our future. It even sets our electoral boundaries.

As Liz MacPherson, herself said: “We want the census questions to reflect the important information needs of New Zealand. Throughout our planning for 2018, we’re making sure we can gather robust, independent information that will inform decision-making and contribute real value to the country.”

Yet, the 2018 census has to this point singularly failed to do that. One in 10 New Zealanders weren’t counted, which suggests the accuracy of any data from the census will be at best questionable, and there will be a lot of questions asked and unanswered.

That is if we get the data. Shaw says it is coming and it will be of use. More than 12 months on from the census, we are still to see any substantive data, and the census itself is subjected to an independent review.

So, it appears that we know nothing about something that was to tell us about everything.

University of Auckland statistician Andrew Sporle said of the 2018 Census: “It’s a bit of a disaster. We don’t know how bad, but we know it’s a disaster.”

I cannot help but agree.

Maybe we will have to just chalk it up as yet another mess this government is failing to take responsibility for.

Checklist for a warm safe winter With autumn well and truly here, it’s time to think about making the home or farm ready for winter, here’s a handy checklist, compiled with the help of local tradespeople, insurance professionals and other advisers, who have singled out the top ten things to manage now to prevent disaster in the cold months. Be like Santa make a list, check it twice, and your winter will be hot chocolate in front of the fire rather than cold drips and sleepless nights.

• Trees and shrubs. Right now they’re picturesque, but your undergrowth and overgrowth can turn nasty when whipped up by the strong winds of winter. Take care of any problem trees now, and get a second bonus free firewood! • Windows. Here’s where a lot of the warmth is lost from some homes — windows with cracked glass or illfitting frames. Moreover, it’s not just obvious conduits for cold and damp.

• Floors. It’s not just about insulation underneath; it’s about a flooring surface for various rooms and applications, which resists mould, is anti-allergenic, and helps keen warmth where you need it for cosy feet. • Fire Power. Did you know that you must sweep your chimney on a regular basis to satisfy the

WINTER CHECKLIST need a chance. A handyman can help with the guttering, but if it needs replacing or you need better filtration to keep your drinking water safe, call a qualified plumber.

• Insurance. This one is simple.

It’s the end of the financial year; it’s nearly winter, it’s the time of year when nature can dish out disasters. So make sure to update your insurance. Talk about ways in which you can achieve the best coverage for the most reasonable price, and what will happen should disaster strike. Your local insurance professionals will make it a streamlined process, and you will enjoy peace of mind for having it all sorted!

• Insulation. At the top of many landlords’ minds right now, but worth a look for all the rest of us.

In the first instance, pop your head up into the access hole in your ceiling and check the status of your insulation. Has it settled or shifted?

Once again the future of our ageing population has been discussed in the media this week, with a recent report by the New Zealand Nurses Organisation and E tu highlighting current challenges and future obstacles to caring for a large number of older citizens. Of course, with medicine and healthcare increasing out lifespans, 65 is no longer considered elderly. Moreover, there is a widespread desire for a change of both the pace of life and one’s living situation once retirement is reached, or even before.

There’s been a demand for both lifestyle and residential homes, as well as a call for more options for those looking to downsize and enjoy a smaller footprint and maintenance commitment in the relative tranquillity of the countryside. These are the wishes of people who may never need full-time care; indeed many may opt to stay on in their retirement homes well into their ninth decade or longer. The statistical curve, which is causing concern for the elder care industry into the future is delivering demands now for modern, easy to access country living in our part of the nation now.

Paparoa has answered the call, with the town’s Community Charitable Trust receiving the green light from council and the wholehearted support of both building and real estate professionals to begin a new development.

Hot Diggity at the Packard Motor Museum u by Geraldine Craw

Bookmark Saturday, April 13 as a day to put on your 1950s gear, jump in your fifties car (or any car that will get you there) and come on down to the Packard Motor Museum to listen to the all-girl bluegrass band Hot Diggity.

Hot Diggity is the only all-female bluegrass band in New Zealand. They play original songs written by Heather Carrigan who plays the mandolin, guitar and performs vocals, and Deborah Mackenzie (guitar and vocals) along with plenty of bluegrass favourites.

Backed up by Jenine Abarbanel (bass and vocals), Sue Drake (banjo and vocals) and Krissy Jackson (fiddle and vocals), they put out a powerful, lively sound with hot instrumentation and tight harmonies.

Hot Diggity formed in 2014, but all five members are veteran musicians having played with numerous other bands in a variety of musical styles for years.

As lovers of bluegrass tradition and the time period of its birth, the Hot Diggity ladies only perform while kitted out in the finest 40s and 50s vintage style.

It’s a sight, which still brings out the ‘big kid’ in us all — a chrome-plated, eighteen-wheeler big rig hauling freight down the highway, paint flashing in the sunshine and the sound of its horn echoing to the horizon. Now the people who drive these massive ‘kings of the road’ are gathering to polish up and wash down their hard-working machines, and it’s all for a good cause.

Trucks will gather at the Northland Field Days site just outside of Dargaville on Saturday, April 6 for the first-ever Dargaville Truck Show bringing together everything from log haulers to tankers, fire appliances to tow trucks. It’s a real who’s who of the heavy transport industry, and they’re showing that their hearts are as big as their engines, by donating money from the event to the upgrade of Dargaville Kindergarten. The centre for early childhood education needs better, more accessible play facilities, and when the call went out, the commanders of the Kaipara’s big road fleet answered.
