p Dargaville Library hosted the first of two school holiday activity days last Wednesday. Librarians Courtnee Ormsby and Jane McAlpine captured the children’s attention with a storytelling session and kept them entertained making cards for family and friends. Next Wednesday, April 30, is Superhero Day and the kids will be treated to a visit by a firefighter and have the opportunity to make their very own superhero badges. Activities start at 10.30am.

Special Olympics athletics  Otamatea High School students attended a Special Olympics Athletics Day at North Harbour Stadium recently and had a fantastic day competing against students from many other schools.

Events on the day included long jump, running and walking races, javelin throwing among other fun sports and OHS students were placed from first to third in a number of activities. Maddy Bond proudly displays her two first place ribbons for the 50m run and 50m walk. OHS Learning Centre’s Ladene Hunter said the students showed excellent teamwork, which helped to make it a pleasurable day for all.

Dalmatian descendants in the Northern Wairoa celebrated their ancestry and culture on Saturday with a Dalmatian Day at Dargaville Museum.

‘They’ being the members of the Paparoa Harness Driving Group, a connection of like-minded equine fanciers and animal lovers who like to harness miniature horses to the buggies, or traps, and ride about in the style of years gone by.

“We have five members currently in the group, and another three ‘members in training’,” said organiser, Shirley Warner-Summers, who often has canine passengers aboard.

“In training means that we train our own horses to the task.”

But excited kids and eager adult tourists can also be spotted when the group offers free rides at the Paparoa Farmers Market on each second Saturday.

“We get visitors from Auckland who are thrilled to take a ride,” says Shirley.

“We also have five farm drives which we visit, and we go further afield, to Baylys Beach and other Kaipara destinations.”

Another group stalwart is Jeanette Straiton, from Waiotira, and she and trusty miniature steed Basil recently did well at a two-day meeting of like-minded drivers at Matakana, taking the points prize for the day. This was awarded to the combination that excelled in obstacle and cross country driving.

The group has plans underway to drive a four-wheel buggy which is currently under construction, with two horses in harness — a ‘pair in hand’. ¢

Dargaville Toy Library has a bright new home, with a fresh selection of toys, but what it really needs is some new members, to keep the service viable.

Surprise visit for Kaiwaka kids A visitor bearing good news made a surprise stop-over at Kaiwaka School recently. Sport Northland’s Louise Collings personally delivered awards and prizes to two students who were winners in the Swim for Life Poster competition.

“There were 70 entries and five overall winners — two from Kaiwaka School,” said Louise. That’s a great achievement.”

The children were delighted with their certificates and prize package of goodies. ¢

‘Cryptic cross’ discovered u by Joanne Speechly

The ongoing Red Hill Cemetery restoration project has uncovered some forgotten fragments of the area’s rich history.

One of these is the original kauri cross marking the resting place of Charley Charleston, an early proponent of Te Kopuru Hospital. The mill hand tirelessly walked the Northern Wairoa district collecting subscriptions in favour of the development.

However, although Charley was a wellknown local identity, he felt that people did not understand him and insisted that when he died his only epitaph, on a white wooden cross, should read ‘Not Under Stood’ after the poem of the same name by Thomas Bracken.

Charley’s spelling has fascinated many people over the years — cleverly done with ‘under stood’ written as two words and the ‘S’ the wrong way around.

The cross has recently been restored

by Des Subritzky, who has been leading the cemetery upgrade project, and Dargaville artist Trevor Moss is donating a plaque on the cross’ history to be installed at Red Hill Cemetery.

“It’s taken many hours of work to restore the cross and research Charley but it’s been worth it,” says Des. “Over the years, many people have asked about the spelling, so the history behind it is important.

“Charley and the Thomas Bracken poem is basically asking people to take a decent look at others. Good on him —

Charley may not have been a doctor but through his attitude and efforts, he helped save many lives.”

Des says there is still more upgrade work to be completed at Red Hill Cemetery but by this time next year, people will notice a big difference.

“It’s good to be involved with something that people appreciate and it has been very pleasing to see so many people come forward and offer their assistance.” ¢

A suicide prevention group is seeking help from the community to develop a logo and colour scheme.

The group called ASK (Awareness of Suicide in Kaipara) was set up following a public meeting last month.

Committee member Michelle Arnesen says the group wants to raise awareness in the community of the problem of suicide. It is planning a community events day in early June.

She says the group is also sending out letters to schools and community groups and is linking with

p Top season for the Hawks

The Hawks are in third place in the Northland Rugby’s Southern Districts competition behind only Hora Hora and Wellsford, having won five of their seven matches.

Club president Kevin Robinson says it has been the Hawks most successful season for four years. The highlight so far has been a 40–36 win over Mid Northern, the club that produced the legendary Going brothers.

A recent descent into division 2 led to a loss of playing strength, as players left to look for other opportunities. But those players left behind showed resilience by winning promotion for the Hawks. This year they have proved themselves at a higher level.

The club’s squad includes Matt Moulds and Shane Neville who are both

ITM Cup contracted players, as well as Northland First Five Daniel Hawkins.

But most of the remaining players are Otamatea locals. But many still have long distances to travel for training and matches.

“We look after the players,” says Mr Robinson. “Our supporters come out in good numbers. And we’ve got good sponsorship from local businesses.”

While this year’s results have been good, the Hawks still have two games to finish the first round. Then all the teams play each other again. The top four after the second round will play off in the semi-finals. “There’s still a long way to go,” says Mr Robinson. “We’re in third position. We need a lot more wins to secure a top-four position. But at this stage it’s looking good.” ¢

Dargaville’s Volunteer Fire Brigade is on the lookout for more volunteers — especially women.

Penny Searle is one of four female members of the brigade and has been a volunteer firefighter for seven years.

To become a volunteer Penny had to pass a criminal records check and a health check. Then she did a week’s training in Rotorua, learning the do’s and don’ts of firefighting, and how to use firefighting gear.

The two 45 minute plays, The Memoirs and Over My Dead Body, will be performed in Dargaville over two nights, on May 8 and 9, and are both entered in Otamatea Repertory’s TheatreFest the following weekend.

Writer and director of The Memoirs, Deborah Steele, says she is keen to find out what the community will make of the play.

“The play is based on my mother-inlaw’s journey with breast cancer and it’s the first serious play I have written, so it’s pretty exciting for me.

My mother-in-law kept a diary of sorts throughout her journey, so I’ve taken that idea and included some other

“I’m really getting into the writing of plays and as this is my first one that is not a comedy, I would really like to see if people enjoy it.”

Time is running out to have your say on Northland Regional Council’s proposal for a nil average general rates increase, as outlined in its draft Annual Plan for 2014/15. including legally required 10-yearly reviews of its regional plans for air, water and soil and the coast.

Deadline close for NRC plan submissions Council chairman Bill Shepherd says the deadline for public submissions is 3pm on Thursday May 1.

He says better-than-expected investment earnings and a close look at its budget have enabled the council to signal the nil average general rates increase.

For a Kaipara district ratepayer whose property has a $225,000 land value the nil increase will mean a total GST-inclusive rates bill of $207.84.

This excludes river management rates.

Mr Shepherd says the council is forecasting total operational spending of $29.4 million during the 12 months from July 1. $14.8 million of this will be spent on resource management,

He’s a long way from his native Belfast but Mark Daly couldn’t be happier.

The Ulsterman has just taken over as manager of the Maungaturoto Hotel and is looking forward to interacting with its loyal local clientele.

Mark comes to Maungaturoto after seven years working in hotels in central Auckland. He started at the Fiddlers Irish Bar and for the last four years worked at the Muddy Farmer, another central Auckland establishment.

But he decided he wanted a change after living in New Zealand’s largest city. “I wanted to see more of the real New Zealand.”

Mark agrees Maungaturoto is way different than Auckland, but he’s enjoying life in a small provincial town.

There was a strong turnout as well at the Dawn Service at Maungaturoto, a march and service at the Ruawai Tokatoka War Memorial Hall, a service and lunch at Hakaru among other Kaipara observances.

There was a similar picture across New Zealand, with young people again to the fore. National RSA

chief executive Stephen Clarke said good weather ensured large crowds of veterans, school groups, young people and families at services across the country.

“The turnouts have been once again huge — there’s great support in terms of remembering our veterans. It’s fast becoming a rite of passage in terms of making sure that you get to the dawn service. And for a first-timer, it’s quite extraordinary.

They can’t get over how many people turn up.”

At Gallipoli in Turkey, more than 10,000 people attended services at the battle sites of Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair. ¢

Tyre tech rolls out u by Andy Bryenton

The rough and rugged logging roads and off-road trails in West Auckland’s Woodhill forest were no match for the latest tyre tech at the recent Mickey Thompson 2014 product launch.

A day spent learning about the new ATZ p3 on-road/off-road tyres was split between a workshop on the science behind the new tyre’s development and some hands-on practical work in the field.

Representing for Mickey Thompson were some serious machines, including the Taupo 1000 off road championship winning Nissan Patrol (retrofitted with a thumping V8) and Dan Cowper’s mud-slinging monster of an off-roader — readers might recognise Dan from Suzuki’s TV coverage of off-road trials; he’s the one who was often standing on the top of the podium!

Representing the Kaipara — and bringing us all the information about Mickey Thompson’s latest — were the team from Gas and Tyre Services,

who were more than happy to tackle the technical side of things before heading out to the forest for some practical demonstrations.

The new ATZ p3 is a breakthrough in that it allows drivers to have one set of wheels for almost all occasions.

He is a careful driver on the open road. But when he drives on a speedway track his persona changes.

Chris gets into his specially modified vehicle, straps himself in and sets out to cause mayhem. The Tokatoka farm manager is so good that earlier this month he won his third successive New Zealand Jalopy title at the Dargaville Speedway track.

Jalopy racing is where competitors attempt to take each other out and win by stopping your opponents from reaching the finish line.

Chris has been jalopy racing for 15 years. “I like that I can hit people and not get in trouble.”

A jalopy car is a former road car which is almost completely stripped. All seats apart from the driver’s are removed. The boot compartment is taken out, along with most of the controls. A roll bar and special harnesses are installed. Chris

says jalopy racing is safe. “I’ve had no serious injuries. I race wearing a seat harness and a neck brace and flameresistant overalls.”

However, there are plenty of knocks and jolts, and the battered state of his car is evidence of that. But Chris says his car is still set to go for another year of racing and he is prepared for many more hard knocks. “You think you’re going fast. But it’s all around 80 or 90, maybe 100kmh.“ He says jalopy racing can suit all sorts. “It’s good fun and it’s easy to get into.”

What is the secret to being a successful driver? “Practice makes perfect. The more you drive, the more you know what you can do with your car.”

Chris White is active in the Dargaville Production Stockcar Club and will be racing at the club’s Finlayson Park Speedway on May 4. ¢

It’s spacious enough for the family, handles well, possesses enough power to surprise, and ticks the biggest box of all, coming in at less than $30,000.

That’s a competent and cool package, especially when you consider the unique look of the little Ford — it will stand out in the crowd for all the right reasons.

Dargaville High principal happy with NCEA results

Otamatea High School’s Level 3 Geography class recently travelled to the Omaha Sandspit as part of their first internal assessment.

Dargaville High School principal David Bargh is trumpeting his school’s latest NCEA figures, saying they show that his school caters well for a wide range of learning needs.

Figures released by the Ministry of Education show that in 2013 Dargaville High students achieved a pass rate of 86.9% at level one, 77.9% at level two and 81.5% in level three.

Mr Bargh says Dargaville High’s pass rates are comparable to — or better than — other Northland colleges, such as Kerikeri High, Otamatea High and Whangarei Boys’ and Girls’ High.

“Our kids get really good pass rates.

We can offer them a wide range of subject choices, such as Art History, and Technology. We’re good and Dargaville High is a good school to send your children to.”

Mr Bargh says the level two pass rate was lower than expected. But that is being addressed. “There’s a little bit of work going on out there.”
