Poppy flight touches down
p A team of volunteer divers has completed an underwater clean-up of Lake Taharoa at Kai Iwi Lakes. Ten staff from the Eroad company removed eight kilograms of rubbish in just over an hour under the watchful eye of a PADI divemaster, including aluminium cans, glass bottles and plastic, seven pairs of sunglasses, a cell phone and three pairs of shoes. Ladies in the dive team included (left to right) Andrea Ruddy, Sonya Sutha, Georgia Smith and Emily Johnson.

The government has announced plans to disband all 20 of the nation’s district health boards and replace them with a single ministry. However, local health care professionals say that the high-level reshuffle will not disrupt day-to-day medical care in the Kaipara.

The political announcement was made by government Health Minister Andrew Little on a televised midday new report on Wednesday, April 21. He revealed that the new entity would be known as Health NZ and take a similar ‘monolithic’ approach to the British
National Health Service, with four regional branches. A Maori health authority will sit alongside Health NZ to address health issues specific to Maori. Legislation is said to be planned for a 2022 roll-out.
“Health NZ will take a nationwide system approach. However, importantly, it will also delegate authority, so frontline health workers and communities have a real say in decisions about the health services they need,” said Little. continued on page 3 …
