p The Ambrose Golf Tournament saw people come from as far away as Opononi and Maungaturoto to join in the annual event at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club. Carters Dargaville manager Mark Kapa says it is always a fantastic day and it is a good time for everyone to be able to catch up and socialise together away from work. “Our builders, suppliers and sponsors are important and we enjoy organising the event and having the opportunity to interact with them on a personal level. We appreciate their support and the Northern Wairoa Golf Club for their continued support too.”

The latest accident happened at Awakino Point and follows a logging truck crash in Dargaville the week before and comes after logs spilled across Otaika Valley Road near Whangarei when a fully laden truck and trailer unit lost control and rolled on a bend on April 11. Northland MP Winston Peters is calling for the government to provide specialist log truck driver training, noting
some trucking firms are employing overseas drivers and experienced operators are agreeing with him. Kaipara logging truck owner driver Dave McCullough says there needs to be more training for inexperienced drivers and the condition of Northland roads “is really bad compared to others around the country. You just can’t get the young fellows to drive the trucks
anymore. They used to be able to go with a driver so they could be taught on the job. The rules have changed now and it is too hard to do this anymore. “I believe most of the ones that do have the crashes don’t have the experience and the shocking roads certainly don’t help. continued on page 3 …
