‘It is also a place with its own rich history, identity and we want to make sure that the community has an opportunity to give their input into this business case.

MORE FUNDING FOR PREDATOR FREE NORTHLAND Following the recent announcement of additional funding from Predator Free 2050 Ltd, the Northland Regional Council has submitted an Expression of Interest on behalf of all Northland communities and agencies, for a large land-based project to eradicate possums from several peninsulas and suppress other predators in Northland. The project will require significant partnerships with key regional organisations, agencies, Iwi and hapu.

The primary objective of this project is to eradicate possums from key areas of Northland and eventually all of Northland.

The project will enhance the work communities have already been doing in predator control.

While some areas of Northland are closer to being ready to implement possum eradication, other areas such as Kaipara and Western Northland will need more

support. The project would aim to support these communities to enable initiatives to be established. Ultimately enabling all communities to work towards a predator free Northland.

KAIPARA HARBOUR MARINE PEST SURVEY — MAY 2019 An agreement has been signed by Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council and MPI, to undertake marine pest surveys in the Northern and Southern Kaipara Harbour.

Knowledge of marine pests in this harbour is very limited.

The survey is planned in the Northern Kaipara (that falls under NRC jurisdiction) from 13 to 24 May 2019. The survey will use a variety of methods to detect a range of marine pests including diver searches, crab traps, seafloor sampling and shore searches.

PLEASE NOTE: Known scallop beds will be avoided during sampling.

There will be a focus on detecting marine pests in high-risk areas of the harbour, i.e. on or near artificial structures. Samples of marine pests and other suspect animals or plants will be collected for identification by taxonomists where their identity is unknown. Results of the survey should be available by September this year.

“Every bit helps, and we are closing the gap,” says Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust chair, Craig Fergus, after receiving a donation from Paparoa Lions of $1,500.

“If everything goes to plan and stays on track, we are optimistic of seeing the project become a reality perhaps by July next year.”

The go-ahead has been given for the concrete foundation to get underway in the $3.6 million project to provide the 14-bed dementia unit extension of the rest home.

“The MCCT is very pleased to be able to proceed, and this is made possible by community fundraising efforts, like the Lions contribution.”

Along with continued community efforts, the trust is applying for some government funding, following a recent visit to the construction site from Deputy Prime Minister, Winston Peters.

Biosecurity New Zealand and the Department of Conservation have launched an online training programme to help New Zealanders identify suspected myrtle rust infections in their backyards.

The plant fungus can be hard to identify without training and can look different during seasonal changes. The new online training modules provide resources to understand the fungus and its symptoms better.

“The courses are available to everyone and cover how it spreads, what to do if you find it and climatic factors that influence myrtle rust,” says Biosecurity New Zealand’s manager for recovery and pest management, John Sanson.

“We are trying to understand the spread of the disease so are asking staff and the public to keep an eye out for myrtle rust over the autumn months.”

are vulnerable to the disease. The fungus, which is mainly spread by wind, generally infects shoots, buds and young leaves of myrtle plants.

Infected plants show typical symptoms including bright yellow powdery spots on the underside of leaves but can also show other symptoms such as grey powdery spots during the cooler months.

DOC and Biosecurity New Zealand have developed a new website as a central place to house resources and information — myrtlerust.org.nz.

If you think you see symptoms of myrtle rust, especially in areas where it has not yet been found, remember to not touch the plant or collect samples, but take pictures and report it to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

What does it mean to have a community-run cinema in Dargaville? Well, by the numbers, it means a lot of wellentertained locals, according to the not for profit trust that operate the popular Anzac Theatre.

p As the Anzac Theatre approaches the need for a big upgrade, members of the trust have a big message — come to the movies!

For six years, the cinema has seen some memorable titles and played host to festivals celebrating local film making talent. More than 51,000 people have watched nearly 7,000 screenings of more than 800 films. The same people consumed 15,000 drinks, 14,000 servings of popcorn and 21,000 ice creams. Volunteers worked some 5,000 hours at the cinema and have vacuumed around 6,000 times.

From its inception, the Anzac Theatre has been state-of-the-art, with modern projection equipment to match its comfy seats; a feature often commented on and appreciated.

Keeping up to date with digital tech, as we all know, can be costly. Recent refurbishments to the main projector have cost in the tens of thousands of dollars, and the switch to a laserpowered projector, which will save power and deliver a sharper picture is on the horizon.

All of it costs, and the best way to help support our cinema, to ensure that years of further entertainment benefit the people of Dargaville, is to come along. Don’t put off watching that intriguing new movie. Bring your mates, or consider volunteering to really get involved! ¢

Dargaville’s CCTV system is only in its first phase, but it has already proven a ‘game changer’ in terms of identifying criminals and acting as a deterrent to those who plan to break the law.

The result, a safer town and a better place to live and do business. That’s the message from Senior Constable Reuben Cohen as a generous donation boosts the project to the completion of its initial roll-out.

Representatives of the Dargaville Community Development Board met with Senior Constable Cohen at Dargaville’s police headquarters last Friday to gratefully accept a donation from business owners affiliated with the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

The sum of $13,000 was raised from generous locals with a clear goal to improve the quality of life and the peace of mind of the entire community.

Representatives Hamish Campion and Nick Suckling reiterated that they and the co-contributors of this donation are

passionate about the CCTV project and very pleased with how it has performed to date.

“If we are to encourage people to work here, visit here and live here, we must offer a safe environment,” said Allan Mortensen, who represented the DCDB alongside projects facilitator Sue Curtis. It’s a sentiment echoed by Senior Constable Cohen, who added that the police is very pleased to forge strong community relationships such as these, for the betterment of Dargaville as a whole. Phase two of the CCTV program is now in the planning stage, with more coverage at key locations mooted. Another forward-thinking idea, the adoption of a community patrol vehicle staffed by volunteers is also under consideration. ¢

Museum goes active at Anzac Anzac and Easter observances at The Kauri Museum at Matakohe have staff pulling out the stops as the school holidays unfold.

The annual Anzac Parade organised with the Paparoa RSA inevitably attracts hundreds of Kaipara people and visitors, with a museum tour a must for many afterwards. Staff have organised an Anzac display based on the theme of The Return Home: Life After the War. “The theme and emphasis are on the soldiers returning from the war and their reintegration into society, said museum general manager Dr Tracey Wedge.

“We have a map to show land in Tokatoka that was designated for exservicemen, and we talk about the scheme in our region. We also have on display a collection of wooden

items made by returned servicemen that illustrate the types of activities developed to help the service personal reintegrate. At the service on Anzac Day itself, speakers will talk about the challenges encountered by soldiers coming home from the theatre of war.”

The display opened on April 19 and closes on June 5 in the Volunteers Hall.

The museum also provided youngsters with holiday activities with workshops about kauri dieback, in which modelling with clay and other activities form a part. The lighter side of Easter was not overlooked though, with traditional Easter egg hunts also on the list. ¢

With 1,200 signatures, the petition opposing a 1,000-hectare landfill for Auckland rubbish in Dome Valley, with a perceived pollution threat to the Kaipara Harbour, has gone to parliament.

The signatures were gathered by the incorporated society Fight the Tip: Tiake te Whenua, after Waste Management, received Over seas Investment Office approval to buy the property, and the petition calls for a moratorium on similar landfills near waterways.

Mangawhai resident, Libby Clews, has been recognised for her determined energy, focus and commitment to helping others at a recent awards ceremony, being presented the prestigious Zonta Yellow Rose Award, which celebrates women who have a significant impact in their community.

A Maungaturoto community supporter has been once again recognised for her dedication to the area by being presented a Zonta Yellow Rose Award at a recent ceremony in Mangawhai.

“Libby embodies the principles of community service coupled with the networking capabilities of social media,” said Zonta spokesperson, Sue Poynter.

With her husband Mike, Libby administers the popular Helping Hands Facebook page, which was established in 2016, offering a safe forum for local families to ask for and receive recycled household items and clothing, general help and community support.

Libby assumed administration of the page in early 2018 when it held membership of 500.

The most common scam was the fake tech support scam, where callers ring about a false issue with a computer and offer to fix it.

The latest scam trend was telephone callers falsely claiming that video footage of people watching pornography would be released unless a ransom was paid.

Hannah has joined other students applying for a raft of agri-food scholarships worth $3 million to help cut the cost of university study.

“The government fees-free policy means I don’t have to pay any university fees,” said Hannah.

“However my accommodation costs are almost $14,000. That’s a lot of money.”

She was urged to consider the long list of scholarships on offer for students studying agricultural courses.

“There are more than 250 scholarships available, which are designed to help entice students into the agri-food sector,” said Mary Holmes from NZ Young Farmers.

“It’s a shame when I hear some of the scholarships go unused because students don’t know they exist,” she said.

Hannah applied after seeing the scholarship advertised on social media.” I was blown away when I found out my application was successful. I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a long shot that I would get it.”

She chaired the TeenAg club, run by NZ Young Farmers, at Dargaville High School for three years and would like to work as a technical field adviser when she completes her studies.

Included is a vast array of accordions, instruments, which are in the most part fully operational, and that reflect some of our maritime and cultural past.

One, especially, is poignantly significant this time of year. Only recently presented to the museum by acclaimed local artist Kim Harrison, the Anzac accordion is both a musical instrument and a work of art. A tribute to those who served and an astonishing visual achievement in itself. The entire accordion is meticulously covered in a mosaic depicting the symbols of our Anzac soldiers, in what is almost certainly a one-of-a-kind bespoke masterpiece.

The accordion was invented in the early 1800s and had an association with sailors and the Royal Navy. No doubt it was easy to transport this compact and versatile instrument aboard ships. This commemorative version of the later, more complex and consummate ‘chromatic’ design, with its full keyboard, is representative of the duty and honour of all our service men and women, on the sea, in the air, or on land.

It was presented to the museum during a concert performed by accordion maestro Kevin Friedrich this March and took pride of place among a collection with many stories to tell. ¢

Phillip Bell’s bagpiping adventure started as a young boy attending Anzac parades with his father where he would admire the pipe band leading the parade.

“When I was 14 years old I began researching my family history because my grandmother is a Cameron and came from Scotland. I wanted to connect to the family and claim my heritage, so I joined the local pipe band, and I played with them for 23 years,” says Phillip.

“I now travel the country to play in different competitions and attend various events. Anzac Day is the busiest day on the calendar, so individual pipers across the country play at different events.”

The pipers then return to the main parade in their area and play together in the band.

“Bagpipes are certainly not a dying instrument, and anyone can learn to play them. I lived in Oban, Scotland for two years because I wanted to visit my ancestral homeland and joined a pipe

band there. Instead of Anzac Day, they have Remembrance Day on November 11, and that was an honour to attend. I went to the battleground and found the Cameron clan gravestone and played my bagpipes there. That experience drew an incredible emotional sense of belonging.

“I am very grateful to have the privilege of playing at Anzac events.

There is a great deal of pride leading the returned and present service people down the road as you honour them, celebrating and remembering them in a very special way. People talk to you with tears in their eyes and smiles on their faces.”

The pipes provoke so many emotions and memories.

“They remember their dad used to play, or how they used to march in the army to bagpipes and drums. A pipe band has military origins, and we are very regimental in our structure and are lead by a drum and pipe major like the armed forces have sergeants and corporals. The instrument stirs up excitement and adds a sense of ceremony, dignitary and pageantry to events — the Queen Mother’s funeral had 1,000 bagpipers lead her away from the church.

“I love playing at funerals — it honours the person and their family and adds dignity. I traditionally pipe the casket out of the service and lead the hearse away from the venue and often play at the graveside. At armed forces funerals, people wear their uniforms, and other people wear medals. They often place poppies on the casket, which is draped in the New Zealand flag. They stand at attention and pay respect and the pipes

Phil’s love of pipe bands began as a youngster when he attended Anzac parades with his father and the bagpipes take him back to his Scottish heritage are so appropriate to send them off to. I have played in conjunction with a Maori cultural group at a funeral and played the casket out of the service to the Last Post whilst a haka was being performed outside. It is an incredible intertwining of cultures, which are very similar, Maori have tribes, and Scottish have clans.

“At Anzac parades, the current day soldiers are similar to the guards outside Buckingham Palace, and there is comradery when they come together

with the older generations. It doesn’t matter where you are in the country; the older band members always turn up for Anzac. I believe it is New Zealand’s day.

Leading the soldiers down the road with the New Zealand flag waving while the national anthem is playing with everyone gathered together can be sad. However, we are grateful for the sacrifices people have made, so we can live the way we live now and playing the bagpipes is an absolute honour.” ¢

adventure, he joined the Mexican Revolution under rebel leader Pancho Villa, then travelled on to England where he enlisted at the start of the Great War. Freyberg won his Victoria Cross leading the capture of an occupied French village. Wounded four times, he refused to surrender and rallied his men to capture 500 German soldiers and take the town.

Fast forward to April of 1941 — 79 years ago. With the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force routed from Greece by an unexpectedly strong panzer assault, Allied soldiers, Greek freedom fighters and Cretan locals banded together to prepare for what they knew would be a fierce invasion of the ancient island.

It will be 79 years ago this month that one of our most famous military tacticians took command of the allied forces on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean, to attempt a defence against a fierce Nazi paratrooper attack. Brave, incisive and already the recipient of a Victoria Cross for his actions during the first world war, General Bernard Freyberg would go on to become well respected by his men, and command victorious operations to rout the Axis in locations as varied as the Italian hill country and the deserts of North Africa.

LEST WE FORGET was Andrew Leslie, also a VC recipient, and a band of resourceful soldiers but nothing to repel an airborne strike.

Indeed, the assault was overwhelming, and despite a series of bold counter attacks, German reinforcements continued to arrive by glider and parachute, forcing an eventual retreat.

Now began a phase of the war, which many locals will be familiar with the North African campaign alongside General Montgomery and opposing the tenacious Axis commander Erwin Rommel.

Kiwis of a particular generation will have heard stories from their fathers and grandfathers of Maadi camp, the exploits of the tough and resourceful Long Range Desert Group made up mainly of New Zealanders, and the push across the top of Africa.

In decisive battles such as Tobruk and El Alamein Freyberg worked well with Montgomery, and both he and the Kiwi troops came to the attention of Winston Churchill, who called Freyberg his ‘Salamander’ after the mythical beast who is most at home in the heart of a raging fire. Indeed, at a divisional command level, Freyberg balanced a disdain for personal danger with a fierce determination not to waste the lives of his men.

That saw him at odds with the commander of the Allied Eighth Army General Claude Auchinleck, insisting that as the commander of a national force, he had the right to refuse orders, which were counter to the New Zealander’s national interest. He won many such arguments by way of his

ability to plan operations that inflicted maximum damage on the enemy while exposing his own troops to the least amount of danger. However, this was not always possible.

Operation Supercharge at Alamein is a classic example. The 28th Maori Battalion flanked one side of the German position, capturing objectives with their superlative close combat skills, while British soldiers attached to Freyberg’s forces swept the other flank, advancing fast in armoured trucks.

A minefield laid by the Germans was obliterated by a 15,000 shell barrage from mobile guns and a bombing raid, allowing the spearhead of the assault to directly get to grips with Rommel’s Panzer tanks and deadly 88mm guns.

Of 94 Allied tanks that charged the Axis guns, only 14 remained operational by the end of the fight.

However, this blow broke the back of the German forces, wrecking their armoured units to the point where Rommel sent an urgent message to Hitler saying that defeat was imminent.

The infamous dictator replied that Rommel should show his men the ‘path to death or glory’.

After North Africa, Freyberg took command of another battlefront well known to Kiwi soldiers and their families — the siege at Monte Cassino.

Many of our New Zealand troops were deployed to take this nigh impregnable monastery on its high hill, both infantry and armoured units.

position for the Italian and German army, and ordered it levelled by giant ‘blockbuster’ bombs. Fighting amid the ruins was still fierce, but it was seen as a turning point of the Italian campaign, leading on to the capture of Florence and eventual victory. Kiwi troops crossed the Po River on Anzac Day 1945, ending Mussolini’s war.

On his return to New Zealand, Freyberg served as governor-general.

He has many monuments to his name, including a square in central Auckland’s most fashionable street and a swimming pool in the capital, reflecting his athletic

prowess as a youth. The men he led those who did not make the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our freedoms came back to more ordinary lives, but their heroism was no lesser than that of the man who led them in battle.

There’s an old saying that ‘a bad general is feared by his troops and loved by the enemy. A good general is loved by his troops and is feared by the enemy.’

Bernard Freyberg gained the respect of the hard and sharp men of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and had veterans like Rommel sending messages to the high command for help. ¢

Boss gets all ova twitter “Blimmin heck Dog, ya gotta wonder what the werld is comin’ to eh?”

Gidday readas, there goes Boss again, but mind you he usally has stonga werds wen he gets a bee in his bonnit. Leasways that’s wot his gerlfrend Sharlene calls it. But Boss duzzint were a bonnet, so I not any wiser eh?

But anyway, ya gotta ask, so I give Boss me LOOK. “Yep Dog,” he sed, ”that Isreal Folla wot earns mega munny over in Ozzie for plain footy got hisself in a reel big mess for saying sum contriversial stuff about lifestyles an religion an stuff on that social medium ona computer — wot me an’ Sharlene don’t want a bar of.” (There he goes agin, readas, Boss acterly loves the bar down ata pub.)

Anyway, Sharlene come upa drive ina ute then, cos she bin ter pickup supermarkit stuff so we had plinty of tucker fer the Easta holidays. She hada papa frum the kattil stop too, so saved me getting’ it. We all went over ter the homested so Boss could help with the tucker bags, an’ I kept any eye on wot went inter the fridge too. Saw sum Tux bikkies inter the cupboard, so I won’t go short. Betta be a bita roast leftovers too, sorta dog’s easter treat, eh?

But anyway, Boss startid on at Sharlene about that footy player in Ozzie.

“Well deah,” Sharlene sed, “he’s not the first bloke ter have strong opininins.

Look at that Tamaki bloke ina cherch movement here in New Zild. He goes on about stuff like theres no termorra. Says that gay peeple causes earthquakes!

But he gits away with it eh. Hey evin that prezidint Trump spouts off ona Twitter

with a lot of twit stuff. Hmm – maybe thats why is called twitta – its for twits!”

Boss hada chuckle at that. “But our footy player in deep shtook fer saying similer stuff. One rool for some, another rool for others?”

“Well deah,” sed Sharlene, “mabe they reckin a footy player is looked up to, an gotta be ona best behava cost he is a big infulince on peeple?”

‘Yeah, rite,” Boss sed. “Grate infulince eh wen they smash an’ high takil, an’ get the old clarit flowin’ ona footy field. Rip tendins, and brake bones evin. Grate exampil for young peeple ter folla.”

Well readas, Sharlene give a bit ofa shrug, an’ put the kettil on.

“Deah, I reckin wot will bee, will bee an’ its not rilly worth getting upsit about. Look, I got us a meet pie each for lunch, lets hava cuppa too.”

Federated Farmers will continue to work with the government on firearms reform as the Arms Amendment bill becomes law.

“We are very pleased that farmers and those who undertake pest control on farms are still going to have access to semi-automatic rimfire rifles, such as the point 22 long rifle, and semiautomatic shotguns with limited magazine capacity,” said rural security spokesperson Miles Anderson.

“These firearms are essential for the control of small, mobile pest species often found in groups such as rabbits, hares, possums, Canada geese where quick follow-up shots are important for the efficient and humane destruction of these pests.

“Our member survey showed that half of the 3,400 respondents own a semiautomatic shotgun or rimfire rifle, clearly showing what an important pest control tool these are on-farm.”

Federated Farmers is disappointed that the government will not consider an exemption to those farmers who have to deal with huge populations of large animal pests such as feral goats, feral pigs, wallabies, deer and tahr.

“We were pleased that the bill was amended to allow their use on private property by professional pest control contractors. Instead of doing the pest control themselves as part of their farming business, as many have

done for decades, farmers will instead have to rely on contractors and all of the risks and costs that come with outsourcing an important task of this type,” Anderson says.

“Federated Farmers will continue to advocate that rural landowners who can display a genuine need to use these

firearms as part of their business. The surrender and destruction of firearms that don’t meet the new controls will be disappointing to many farmers, and other firearms users, but this is a vital step to ensure that we’re never witness to this kind of tragedy in New Zealand again.” ¢
