She will be travelling with a group of five other locals including her daughter Karen Carter, granddaughter Hannah and family friends Jan and Grant Thomas and their daughter, who are relations of Harry Nichols of Waihue who also fought in Gallipoli.

“I always thought I would like to visit Gallipoli but my husband died 10 years ago and it never happened,” she said.

“I wanted my daughters to go because they are direct descendants. We applied as part of a ballot and it has just been a series of coincidences that has meant we are all able to make it.”

Ernie Young went to war with the Otago Mounted Rifles. After losing his right arm in Gallipoli, he settled in Waihue, farming in a place then known as Struggler’s Gully.

Over the years she has  Pat Young and her late father-in-law’s war memorabilia discovered memorabilia around the family home, relating to his Brian Eastwood, destined to be available time at war including a photo album in the first instance internationally, in which records his experiences. The e-book format.

Mrs Young is looking forward to being material is currently being prepared in book form, by Kaipara Lifestyler writer, part of the Gallipoli commemoration

and is determined to take part in the ceremony which includes a six kilometre walk.

“I know it would mean a lot to him,” she said. 

 The 13th annual Otamatea day camp attracted 221 children last week. Funded by local churches and the community, it was an opportunity to participate in a holiday programme filled with fun, adventure and new experiences including sports events, building huts, mosaics and flax canoes.

“The enthusiasm and joy on the children’s faces throughout the camp made it all worth it. The parent and youth helpers were awesome and much appreciated. It is great to see the community get involved and encourage the future generations,” said organiser Pastor Phillip Leaf.

 Handing out soft toys in traffic jams and wearing bunny suits to collect donations on the Interislander ferry was all part of the fun for Team Minionator, Graeme Powdrell and Craig Nash.

The Porkpie Mini Run raised more than $195,000 toward the Kidscan cause which four Dargaville schools will benefit from. Team Minionator raised at least $7,000 personally and would like to thank their sponsors, Wilson Earth Moving and Newman Engineering of Dargaville and Fast Signz Whangarei along with everyone else who gave donations to make the event such a success.

Top recognition for council Facelift for Tinopai wharf

The Kaipara District Council has received a Highly Commended for its entry in a prestigious Society of Local Government Managers Awards in Wellington.

The Tinopai community, Te Uri o Hau, Northland Regional Council and the Kaipara District Council have banded together to put plans into action to see the revival of the historic Tinopai Wharf.

 The historic Tinopai wharf is set for a revamp  Fran Mikulicic, general manager regulatory and acting chief executive Jill McPherson at the Society of Local Government Managers Awards

The win has saved the council from possibly losing it’s building control authority.

The judges said the council used an exciting technological development to move from being close to losing BCA accreditation, to a recognised sector leader, inside three months.

“I think this really shows how far we have come as an organisation,” said acting KDC chief executive Jill McPherson.

“Two years ago we would not have had anything to enter. This year we were proud to be able to put up entries for two categories. This shows that the council is becoming the high performing organisation that the commissioners want us to be.”

Motivated by what it called a ‘burning platform’ — the potential loss of building consent authority accreditation, council staff chose ‘a bold transformational solution’ to change from a paper-based consenting process to a cloud-based software process.

With the help of Selwyn District Council who had already shown excellence in this area, the KDC has been the first to implement the totally cloud-based comprehensive software

solution called AlphaOne. “The choice was a bold one and not without risks,” said Dr McPherson.

“We could not have done it on our own and would like to congratulate the team led by Fran Mikulicic, general manager regulatory, and thank everyone who was involved and supported the transformation.

“If the project had been unsuccessful we would have lost International Accreditation New Zealand certification and been forced to close down as a building control authority. We were not prepared to let that happen.”

When IANZ reassessed council late last year it noted what it called a ‘phenomenal turnaround’.

No corrective actions were required and due to the excellent result of the audit the next assessment would revert to the normal two-year cycle of assessment.

“We cannot afford to relax. This is an ongoing process and we will continue to strive for excellence to stay at the top of our game,” she said. 

A community meeting led by Kaipara District Council community facilitator Darlene Lang Gent was held last weekend, to discuss repairs and remedial work required to extend the wharf’s life.

Mrs Lang Gent said the purpose of the meeting was to get community input and to discuss what resources were available.

“There are a lot of people with experience in building, administration and project managing that are willing to help out in the community. A structural engineer has offered her services for

free and was given the mandate by the community to design the remediation work. We will meet in two months with a design and a clear view of what repairs are needed.

“It is also really good to have the Northland Regional Council on board.”

NRC deputy chairman Graeme Ramsey said: “There was a real commitment to repairing the wharf.”

“A wharf has been there for almost 100 years and the last one was upgraded in 1991. There was a lot of energy and people were prepared to help.” 

An invitation to Bridge Poppies on show Dargaville Bridge Club is putting out a call for beginners and new players and will be hosting lessons at its Memorial Park clubrooms beginning this Thursday, April 23, at 7pm.

Knitters have formed a united front to honour those who fought in the First and Second World Wars.

 Dargaville Bridge Club members reckon you shouldn’t take bridge too seriously: Deirdre Dewhurst, Anna Murphy and John Nielsen

Club president John Nielsen says people are often put off the game, believing it to be too serious and competitive. In reality however, he says bridge is a great social game, fun and mentally challenging.

“Dargaville Bridge Club is friendly, helpful and supportive of new players,” says John. “When I joined the club it was like getting 50 new friends.”

A founding member of the club, Glad Morse, still plays bridge and rarely misses a session. In a recent match against Josie Smith, she earned one of the top scores of the year, with 70.83 per cent.

The Dargaville club has around 50 members and most meet twice a week to play.

“If you like playing cards, especially 500, you really should come along and see what bridge is all about. I can strongly recommend it — my only regret is that I didn’t start playing bridge 20 years earlier.

“It’s a great game and the twice weekly sessions give me a chance to catch up with friends. We hope to see a lot of new beginners at the Thursday lessons and we’re looking forward to our anniversary in February.”

The club is planning a special tournament and celebration luncheon to mark its 40th anniversary in February next year and all members, past and present, are invited to attend.

 Marion McEwing by Dargaville Sewing Centre’s display of poppies to be gifted to the RSA on Anzac Day

Owner of the Dargaville Sewing Centre Marion McEwing, has been holding crochet and knitting classes at her local business to teach people how to create poppies and is collecting them to gift to the Returned Service Association on Anzac Day after the wreath ceremony.

They will make up part of a display at the RSA to commemorate those who fought in World War One and Two before being shifted to Dargaville Museum where they will become part of an Anzac exhibition. “They are all a little

bit different which is quite nice,” said Marion. “It has been quite popular with lots of people wanting patterns. We sold out on one lot of red wool.”

The initiative started as a request from Te Papa in conjunction with Countrywide Yarns but when the museum was inundated with more than enough poppies to represent every soldier that gave his life, the sewing centre carried on to make their own collection.

Marion encourages people to bring their poppies into the store by Friday, April 24. 

Concert hits high notes

Audience members took a trip down memory lane at a packed Lighthouse Function Centre as part of the Kevin Friedrich and Friends concert, with a multimedia display commemorating 100 years since the Gallipoli landing and 70 years since the end of World War Two.

Popular local cafe Fresh Vibe has opened the doors of their new premises on the main street in Dargaville, with manager Ashish Rao saying business has exceeded his expectations.

“It has been pretty busy,” he said. “Things are looking good.

“There were a few new faces on opening day and also our regular customers following us. We are all very excited about how it has turned out.”

Mr Rao says there has been a lot of foot traffic with customers coming in to see the new look as they head in to town.

“We are open for dinner and are considering  Ashish Rao and two of his staff on opening day at his cafe Fresh Vibe theme nights with different sorts of meals available.

We want to offer something different.

“There has been heaps of positive feedback from customers about the location and the big space, even though it was packed during lunch time.”

 Faces from the past were remembered in the concert’s multimedia presentation

The presentation consisted of photos of war veterans collected from local families with original backing music from Gem of the Kaipara composer Gary Daverne.

Display creator Ken Cashin says it was a challenging project which took the best part of two weeks to compile.

“It was to pay tribute for the people that gave us our freedom. There were a lot of people involved and I am just part of a team. It was really good to share the stories with the community.

“The response has been wonderful. It really touched a lot of families.”

Kevin Friedrich named the concert a success saying: “Everybody seemed like they really enjoyed and appreciated it. It was great to be able to honour the servicemen.

“Funds raised from the concert go to the museum to help develop their exhibits.

“Everyone went home on a high note, feeling proud to be a New Zealander and very patriotic. It was a very special day.

Featuring three short productions, Kaiwaka Sports Association manager Cheryl Anderson says it will be a fun night out for all.

“It will be an entertaining evening but also a chance for locals to see a bit of our history.”

Short film Eloise kicks off the evening.

Shot on the banks of the Kaipara Harbour, it stars local men, Trevor and Jordan Linnell, and has played in theatres across the country and at NZ Film Festival. Director Chris Todd worked with Peter Jackson on the Lord of the Rings movies.

The second item screening is the first half of the Yulia & Friends concert, which took place at the KSA in February.

“We’ve chosen the first half as it

includes six local singers performing, as well as a couple of songs by Yulia — it’s a nice mix. After the concert, I had a number of people say they missed it or didn’t realise it was on, so now is their chance.”

The third item is a short film shot by local girl, Emma Haughton, two decades ago. The project features Kaiwaka landmarks and interviews with local people.

“It should be a blast to see what Kaiwaka looked like 20 years ago and we can all have a laugh about how young and attractive we used to be!”

Movie Night takes place at KSA on Sunday, April 26, at 7pm. Entry is a gold coin donation and includes free popcorn. 

Popular op shop reopens

Lion of Judah Community Church has recently taken over the op shop that is located in one of the Old Dairy Company buildings in Dargaville.

A simple exchange of words motivated former Kea leader Donna Preston to arrange a group of Cub Scouts to help the Returned Services’ Association Women’s Section place poppies on the graves of those returned from service.

The long-standing op shop in Bassett Street has been closed for some time to allow for Pastor Chris Fulop and his team to make a few alterations.

The overall look of the shop has been changed and the range of products being carried has also been expanded.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the op

shop’s usual customers coming back in,” says Chris. “And hopefully a whole lot of new ones as well.”

The op shop, which opened yesterday, now has a convenient new payment option — an EFTPOS machine — and also has a Facebook page entitled Lion of Judah “Op Shop”. 

“A customer came into my work with a sore back. When I asked why, she told me it was because she had been bending down putting poppies on the RSA graves for Anzac Day,” she said.

Seven youngsters made short work of placing small white crosses adorned with a poppy on all the graves at the New Mount Wesley RSA cemetery in Dargaville.

“The RSA Women’s Section is usually in charge of this and they were really grateful. It saved their backs and taught the children about Anzac Day.

“They do this every year but I think the cubs will continue to help out and make it a yearly thing.

“It was absolutely wonderful and I think it taught the children a lot.”

Their work was appreciated by the Women’s Section.

“They were pleased to be getting help from the younger generation,” said RSA Women’s Section secretary treasurer Betty Bruce.

“It didn’t take them long to get it all done and it helps them gain their badges for helping in the community.” 

Matakohe A combined service of Paparoa Returned Services’ Association and The Kauri Museum will take place at the museum, with fall-in at the Matakohe War Memorial Hall at 10.30am. The march to the flagstaff will be accompanied by a mounted soldier dressed in a WWI uniform and by WWI nurses in uniform.

The march will halt at the Cemetery Flag, the flag will be lowered and The Last Post sounded. The march will continue to the Gun Memorial for wreath-laying by schools, then to the War Memorial Hall for further wreath-laying and will continue into the Volunteers Hall of the museum. A service will then be held during which family or friends will have the opportunity to lay flowers or poppies in the display near photographs of their loved ones. After the service a cup of tea will be served in the Matakohe War Memorial Hall provided by the Committee of the Friends of the Museum. A commemorative display titled ‘Three Cousins, Defying the Odds, Surviving Gallipoli’ will pay tribute to the experiences of the Underwood Family, during the Gallipoli campaign.

One of the Maungaturoto RSA members has written a programme and researched over 24,000 names, and people are encouraged to come along and search for information on their family members.

The service this year will be compèred by Kaipara District Council commissioner John Robertson and led by Dargaville Baptist Minister Gareth Wood, with support from John McLean of the Northern Wairoa RSA. Dargaville Museum has a special exhibition running from 12–28 April which commemorates both World War I and World War II, with a special collection focusing on local families’ involvement.

Entrance to this special exhibition is free, and people are encouraged to visit it on their way to or from Dargaville’s Anzac services. 

Arthur Gavin and William Hadwin, Canadian Kiwis  by Brian Eastwood

Hailing from Nanaimo, Canada, Arthur Gavin and William Hadwin were two carpenters working around Dargaville when World War 1 burst upon the world.

Together they decided to enlist in the New Zealand Army as part of Eighth Reinforcements. With training over, both left for Europe on 23rd September 1916 aboard troopship Pakeha, bound for England.

On May 24th before going into camp, William had married Dargaville girl Elsa Gould at Anglican Holy Trinity Church. According to military records, she was named as next of kin for both Canadian soldiers.

Elsa was daughter of G. A. (Alf or Pop) Gould, partner in the firm that built the Northern Wairoa Hotel and was granddaughter of Northern Wairoa pioneer Anglican minister, Reverend Frank Gould.

All went well until William suffered a head wound in August 1917. He eventually came home to New Zealand where he and Elsa celebrated their Silver Wedding in 1942.

However, Corporal Arthur Gavin, fighting with New Zealand Rifle Brigade, died at Passchendaele October 12th 1917, still the worst day in New Zealand army history.

Listed as missing, Arthur was later presumed killed in action. He is honoured at Tyne Cot Memorial Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium and RSA Roll of Honour, Dargaville. A 1919 memorial notice placed in the New

William and Elsa lived the rest of their lives mostly in Wellington. Una married Dargaville’s Ted Robinson, who later became partner and manager of Williams Ball and Fannon. Vera never married. 

Descendants of the Underwood family from Huarau and Maungaturoto will gather in Matakohe this Anzac Day, to pay special tribute to three relatives who fought in Gallipoli.

Cousins Ernest, Percy and Fred Underwood are gone but not forgotten and a special display during the Paparoa RSA and The Kauri Museum Anzac ceremony will pay tribute to their experiences in Gallipoli.

A service will be held at the museum with fall-in at the Matakohe War Memorial Hall at 10.30am, where museum staff have created a commemorative display titled ‘Three Cousins, Defying the Odds, Surviving Gallipoli’.

Descendant Jos Keay says she is blown away at the chance to commemorate her relations. “They weren’t decorated soldiers but I think it is equally important to remember these men.

The three landed together on April 25 and all of them were seriously wounded within the first few weeks. Ernest and Percy returned to battle despite being injured a number of times.

Once the war was over they returned to their life of farming at Huarau and Brynderwyn. Two other family members, Arthur and Herbert joined the war effort in 1916, both fighting in the Somme and Herbert was awarded the Military Medal for his efforts.

“It is amazing there were so many from the same family fighting at the same time. We are really proud. There will be family coming from Australia and around New Zealand to take part in the wreath laying ceremony.” 

Bill Fitness has a steer that is now 20 years old. Many people have wanted to know the story of this big horned old beast who weighs about a ton, is one point six metres tall and is seen on the side of the road just out of town.

“I had a cow whose calf didn’t survive,” says Bill, “so I went to a farmer out of town and purchased another for her and the two got along just fine. He cost me 20 dollars at the time and I named him Fergie.

“We left the farm we were on and started a bed and breakfast with a lamb, Fergie, and a mixture of parrots and other birds in an aviary in tow. We often had people staying who had never had the experience of touching an animal, Fergie became quite famous and a part of our family.”

Bill then left that property and went to another, where the neighbours have

allowed him to open a fence and give Fergie more room to come and go as he pleases.

“Yes he is old, yes he is slim, but rest assured he is ok. He has his own personal vet who checks on his health and gives him his shots when they are due,” says Bill.

“I pat him, brush him and clean his tail, we are really good friends and he gets treated to nice fresh hay.”

So, if you have seen that big old steer on the side of the road with his big horns, he has a name and it is Fergie, give him a smile, he might just smile back. 
