She will be travelling with a group of five other locals including her daughter Karen Carter, granddaughter Hannah and family friends Jan and Grant Thomas and their daughter, who are relations of Harry Nichols of Waihue who also fought in Gallipoli. “I always thought I would like to visit Gallipoli but my husband died 10 years ago and it never happened,” she said. “I wanted my daughters to go because they are direct descendants. We applied as part of a ballot and it has just been a series of coincidences that has meant we are all able to make it.” Ernie Young went to war with the Otago Mounted Rifles. After losing his right arm in Gallipoli, he settled in Waihue, farming in a place then known as Struggler’s Gully.
